Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court in Lagos, yesterday, ordered his release of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu from Kuje prison.

Recall that in December 2019, the former Abia state governor was sentenced to 12 years in prison after he was convicted of N7.1bn fraud alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and a former Director of Finance during his tenure, Ugo Udeogu.

The Supreme court on May 8, 2020, then nullified Kalu and Udeogo's conviction on grounds that the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, lacked the jurisdiction to have presided over their case.

Kalu immediately approached the Federal High Court and filed an appeal for his release. The ruling was delivered yesterday in his favor.

The Lawmaker representing Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 2 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Jude Idimogu has advised Ndigbo to join All Progressives Congress (APC), as the only option that could guarantee Nigerian president of Igbo extraction.

The legislator who spoke when he visited the Eze Nwajiofor Okoli, Eze Ndigbo of Ajeromi-Ifelodun, on Wednesday to solicit support of the royal father, having taken up the new role of apex leader of Igbo in Lagos APC. The lawmaker maintained that the APC was the party to beat, stressing that there was no other party with the kind of relevance the APC has adding that the people would be wasting time in any other party.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot give Ndigbo the presidency. They need to embrace APC to be relevant politically. We cannot continue to complain of marginalization and remain in opposition. We must join the ruling part en masse and anytime it is our turn to produce the president, we would be in a good position to do that” he said.

Eze Okoli, while appreciating Idimogu, said that he was convinced that with the legislator as apex leader of Ndigbo in the state, and with the exemplary leadership quality, for which the lawmaker was known, the ruling party would be sure of their support in the next general election.

Hotel owners in Lagos state have given reasons why they would not receive Nigerian evacuees in their hotels.

According to them, instead of the federal government agency in-charge of the evacuees dealing with hotel owners directly, they sublet the contract to middle men who have now seen it as an opportunity to make quick money.

For instance, they said while federal government has budgeted N30.000 per night for each returnee,the middle men are offering hotels N10.000 and breakfast per returnee, adding that only the lowest hotels have accepted the offer because they are not having customers and also lack standard facilities. Speaking further, they said that even though the contractors don’t have any experience in hotel management, they insist that the duty of hotel owners would be limited to only the provision of bed and breakfast, while they (contractors ) would provide every other services required in the hotels.

They also said that the terms of agreement that was sent to them was not favourable. Some of the terms they said include that they (middle men)would bring their own beddings-bed sheet and pillow case, that they would prefer to come with their own house keepers to attend to the evacuees and their needs instead of the hotels` house attendants, that they would buy gas or diesel for the hotel generators to ensure continuous power supply.

They said that all the terms were mere ploy to defraud federal government and suffer the evacuees because the house attendants they would bring would not be professionals, adding that they would also go and buy substandard bed sheets and pillow cases which is not 100 per cent cotton in other to make more money from government. They also wonders if hotels should provide only breakfast for evacuees, where would their lunch and supper come from?

They called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC), to investigate this agency that is given the responsibility to take care of the Nigerian returnees and make sure that they are comfortable. According to them, the agency is rubbishing the good intentions of the federal government. The hotel owners said that federal government should try to be dealing with them directly in cases like this, instead of going through middle men.

The EFCC need to investigate what happened to the huge amount of money that was set out for this humanitarian project because even a lot of the returnees are the ones providing some of the money. They appealed to EFCC to go and see where the returnees are being lodged to see if the hotels justify the amount given to them by government’

Travelers going to Abuja from Lagos or coming from Abuja to the southern parts of the country are now stranded as Lokaja-Abuja express way and Abuja –Okene road has been lock down.

According to Irukkanews correspondent who is monitoring the ugly development, this is as a result of a clash between Lokoja revenue collectors and trailer drivers. According to him, one of the tanker drivers refused to give the revenue collectors the sum of N200.

He said this led to a fight in which the conductor of the trailer driver was killed. Speaking further, the death of the conductor made the other trailer drivers to block the high way with their articulated vehicles.

“The Abuja-Lagos express way and Abuja-Okene express way have been blocked since mornings.There has been no movement and the reason is because Revenue Officer are fighting with truck drive. The fight has led to the death of one of the conductors of the truck drivers and because of that the other truck have block the road, wielding sticks, cutlasses and stone.The blockage started from federal university main gate to Kogi State Polytechnic which is along Lokaja-Abuja Express way and Abuja-Okene road. One of the conductor of the tank was killed .As I am making this report,the body of deceased is still lying on the road.”

The index case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, an Italian man, has tested negative and has been discharged from the Isolation centre of Yaba Mainland Hospital where he was quarantined and treated.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on his official Twitter handle.

As the COVID-19 Incident Commander for Lagos, I am glad to inform you that the index case; the Italian gentleman is now negative. Through a combined effort of Lagos, Ogun State and Fed Health Authorities, we were able to limit the transmission of the virus to a single contact.

This involved aggressive contact tracing and containment strategies. However we now have several new imported cases and we hope we can apply the same contact tracing strategy along with social distancing to slow down the outbreak which may be brewing from these new cases.

The index patient consented to donating one unit of white blood (plasma) before he was discharged today. The blood plasma is rich in antibody proteins that target #COVID19 virus. The white blood plasma is frozen in our Bio-bank and will be useful in handling new cases.

The blood plasma will be beneficial for the treatment of new patients in the absence of a defined therapeutic drug for #COVID19 yet. The patient appreciated the exceptional care and support given to him by staff of the infectious Disease Hospital,Yaba and all members of the EOC. The President Muhammadu Buhari led federal government is understood to have reduced the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from N145 per liter to about N130.

According to a report by Tribune,  this is said to be part of the decisions reached during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.

Recall that last week, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, had said the government was in consultation with relevant stakeholders on the possibility of reducing the price following the crash in crude oil prices in the international market.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy Obafemi Hamzat are currently at the scene of the explosion at the Abule-Ado area in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of the state.


The explosion which occurred on Sunday rocked neighboring areas, with plumes of smoke rising into the sky from the raging inferno as a result of the blast. The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who gave preliminary reports on Sunday said at least 17 bodies have been recovered, while 25 casualties are being treated for injuries from the pipeline explosion.


He added that the raging fire had displaced many residents who fled their abodes for fear of being caught up in the inferno.
