tensazangetsu20: If only you used a bit more effort to read through the post, you'll have seen where I referenced "solid repositories" and I'm sure I mentioned "before recruiters go into the detail". Good luck getting a job with 50 commits as a beginner without experience. Most times, you'll only get to Data Structures and Algorithm stage IF you don't get screened out with your 50 commits. I never did Data Structures based interview even as an entry level applicant. Thats not to say its not relevant though. Many organisations are adopting take-home "real" application development. 4 Likes |

Just goofing around today and checked out my Github profile, contributions section. Picture below. This is for beginners, as this may not matter when you have some years of experience. If you're a beginner, your first job is to paint that board green, REALLY GREEN. Light it up with bright green colors. Often, tech recruiters just look at that section before going to the details. At a glance, it tells them alot: 1. You've been coding actively. 2. Most times, it separates you from other applicants. 3. If the repositories that make up the contributions are really solid, you're sure to impress. 4. How can someone trust you that you (without experience) can code and that you wouldn't waste their time if they invited you for interview? THIS IS IT. Generally, this gets your foot in the door. Keeping the door open now depends on what happens afterward. It's a new year, whatever you do, don't stop learning and don't stop coding. PS: If you don't know what this is, you've not started. But don't worry, you can start where you are. The only thing that matters is your determination. Your age, gender, academic or financial background, e.t.c, does not matter. I've seen a 56 year old who taught himself how to code. Single mothers with responsibilities e.t.c. One of the people I learnt how to code with was heavily pregnant. What I'm saying is you have no excuse. YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE. Let's do it!!!! 15 Likes 2 Shares

coolshegs1: Before choosing a new skill, you may want to consider demand and passion. As for demand, there is an abundance of data out there. What you're looking for is Year on year increase in demand for your chosen skill. Stackoverflow, Glassdor e.t.c report statistics like this. If the demand for your skill set has been on a decline in the last 3 years (3 years is a pretty long time in tech), you should brace up for a challenging job search. Band-wagonism is really strong in the tech industry. Suddenly, you'll realize everyone is screaming and howling about this new tech in town, usually, demand follows the trend. 2 Likes |

Supreme145: I know that feeling. I've seen teenagers and people in their early twenties literally becoming responsible for supporting their households (including rent) financially. Not from anything illegal but from a tech career. Their retired parents simply hands off. Some of these guys don't even have a degree. Just the intellectual resilience to keep learning. Just wondering if they'll have ever been able to make any meaning of their lives in the extremely harsh economic realities of Africa. I visited some African countries and the story of hardship is not so different from Nigeria's. 3 Likes |

after4: Some people have a portfolio of projects to show potential employers of the projects they done in the past. It's just a website about you and your work. It's usually not compulsory since you have a github profile with all/most of your projects. It's different forn github because github contains the repositories with the code base while portfolio just showcases few projects that you're proud of in finished form. There are free learning resources online on how to create compelling job application assets specifically for developers.. Resume, github, linkedin, portfolio(optional), even twitter profile, e.t c NB: IF YOU'RE AN ENTRY LEVEL APPLICANT, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO CREATING STRONG APPLICATION ASSETS. THEY ARE OFTEN WHAT SEPARATES YOU FROM OTHER ENTRY LEVEL APPLICATNTS. Some guys are really good, but employers dont know and cannot know until you get to the interview stage. The tragedy is that a lot of them are never given a chance to get to the interview stage because they have really poor Resume or unprofessional social media presence. Work on this and you're many steps ahead. 10 Likes 3 Shares |

after4: First thing is to make your LinkedIn profile very professional. Link it to all your application assets like github profile, portfolio(if you have one). Showcase some projects or relevant articles also. Once your LinkedIn profile is tight, filter for job titles you want in specific region (e.g Europe, North America e.t.c). Apply to as many as possible. Forget about years of experience, JUST APPLY, as long as you're competent in the job description. If you're an entry level applicants, it's a game of numbers. Those days, I can submit 50 applications in 30 minutes. LinkedIn made it really easy. The more QUALITY applications you submit, the higher your chances. After your first or second job, you might not need to apply again. Head hunters will find you and ask if you're interested in new roles. I wish you good luck 11 Likes 1 Share |

I have not met one Software Engineer who does not plan to Japa. Don't get me wrong, there are some who may be completely okay with living in Nigeria for some reasons, chief of which could be their spending power due to currency exchange rate. If you work remotely for a foreign company, you might be closer to achieving your goal than you thought. Myself, a Software Engineer, living abroad and working for yet another foreign org., my dream is wandering all over the globe( barring ongoing COVID madness). I call myself a global wanderer. Your chances before now: Before now, the most common means to japa was through sponsorship by a potential foreign employer. However, you have to be a whiz in your tech stack with tonnes of experience. As per requirements, most countries require potential employer to prove that they are unable to source talent locally before "importing" talent (you). The odds against us in respect to this is huge. Why should any company go through that stress except you're really special. Few people I know "Japa-ed" through this means. Other disadvantage of this is that you're somewhat restricted to that country. For people who are "waka-abouts" like myself, this is not acceptable. Your chances today: One of the good things that came with this COVID outbreak is the popularisation of remote work. With this popularisation came Digital Nomad Visa. This visa category started getting known in 2020 and blew up in 2021. 2022 is going to be mad... Estonia, Germany, Georgia, UAE, Portugal, Iceland and many more European and third world countries alike have implemented this visa class or a variant of it. Feelers are that more countries will follow suite. It makes sense for these countries because they can stimulate economic growth by bringing in independent workforce that'll not compete with indigenes for local jobs. The requirements The requirements are almost the same across the board except for few variations here and there. 1. Proof that you're employed or self-employed by an organisation outside your proposed country of residence. 2. Proof of a minimum monthly income typically an average of $2000 per month. Some others like Portugal require as low as less than €700 per month. 3. Other sundry requirements for immigration like police background check, health insurance e.t c The residence permit you'll get ranges in duration from 1 year to 5 years and are mostly renewable. So if you're skilled, currently working remotely, and you hope to japa, don't sleep on this one. Do your research, plan and do the needful. On the other hand, if you love moving around, 3 months, 4 months or longer here and there, all the while working and earning $$$, THIS IS IT. Let's do it!!! For people like us who can't stay in one place, we've found a way to run around the globe. My goal is to have lived in 6 countries by 2025. 17 Likes 4 Shares |

It's a no brainer. Success of the club or otherwise is unknown. You don't want to start job hunting afresh if the club does not succeed. It's really a thin rope. The tech company on the other, I think aligns with your passion and experience. I'll go for Berlin option if I were you. 1 Like |

adonainana: May God really bless you. So irresponsible lending. Even foreign companies secure their lending with validated means of income. How can you give students and dependent people loan and you're surprised when they don't pay back. And folks here are blaming 'Nigerians' for not being trustworthy. Give anyone free money anywhere in the world and they'll take it. Especially when they know you can't get it back. It's not about Nigerians. It works in other countries because they have a strong credit reporting system with real consequences. Not spamming and defaming people to their contacts. 1 Like |

The loan apps are lending irresponsibly. If you offer people money, they will take it whether they know how to pay back or not. It's your job to make sure you lend responsibly. You can say people are not trustworthy all you like, when you give out a loan, you must have a solid means of recovering your loan, including recoverable security. Basic 5 or 6 C's of credit. Not all these spammy messages they send to people's contacts. They've just not seen people who will dedicate themselves to bring them down. Bunch of incompetent quacks. 1 Like |

BuyAndSellStuff: I wish you would look beyond the surface. This is a process I've been through many times in my career. It didn't go well not because of my abilities. What do you say when suddenly electricity just gets cut off in a situation where it should never have happened and where there are multiple backups and NONE of them seem to work? Or your reliable computer just froze? Or you just received a news that changed the entire dynamics of things. These are just few of everything that went wrong. Again, not cos of my abilities. If it were my abilities we would still finish the deal. This time, they cancelled and I looked like a joker. But thanks for the contribution. |

MaxInDHouse: Sincerely, when I said long prayers, I meant deep, heart felt prayers. Good things happen to me even without prayers or extremely short prayers. I am not religious but I strongly believe in God. If my prayers dont get answered, at least I can still accept the outcome but when the complete reverse is the case... For example, today's meeting could have gone well and I may not receive a positive feedback. I'll still be cool with that. We win some, we lose some. But when I said something was a disaster, I meant exactly that. I've never been embarrassed like that in a very long time due to things beyond my control and things that rarely happens. Beginning to ask myself serious questions. |

Religion / Could My Prayers Be Working Against Me? by Lindner: 2:59pm On Nov 18, 2021 |
Whenever I deliberately pray intensely (very occassionally) about anything, the reverse is the outcome as against my usual 30 seconds prayer. I've noticed this trend. I've benefitted from near-miraculous opportunities by just my 30 seconds prayers. Is it possible that my long prayers are working against me? It's been over a decade since I left my parents to live as an adult and I'm the least religious person I know. I've not stepped into a church in three years, don't pay my tithes or any of those things they do in the church. Other than 30 sesonds to 1 minute early morning prayers that I observe, half asleep, half awake, that's it with my relationship with God. But I've enjoyed so much grace, promotions, unimaginable financial blessings. My career took off like a jet. What took people over 20 years to achieve in my industry, I did in less than 3 years. I may not even take common paracetamol in years. I ascribe it all to God. I was raised in a godly family. We prayed together as a family morning and evening everyday, WITHOUT FAIL.... plus regular fasting and prayer on Saturdays. Again, just now, I left a meeting that I had been preparing for for several weeks. Because it was important to me, I prayed really well (many times). Something was telling me as I was praying that "You're going to regret this". The meeting was a major disaster!!! Everything looked okay until 10 minutes before the meeting. It was as if something was messing with everything. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. They ended the meeting mid way and never returned. I'm sure I won't receive any email from them. I've been through similar meetings with even less preparations and just my 30 seconds of prayer and I usually dance out of such meetings. Not just about this particular incidence but a striking trend I've noticed. I can begin to count. Today, I just promised myself never to exceed 30 seconds of prayer EVER again. Am I the only one experiencing this? This is the time I wish I had someone who is more discerning or could interprete this. |
