Also you should know that this is this the first time since 1999 that a general is not contesting for election which is a good thing for us, cos it means we are moving away from the old ways and ushering in the new era...one on one Obis just a bit better than tinubu and atiku but the huge benefit for the country is that he is a departure from the past..tinubu and atiku belong to the old political ways, political thinking and old political ideologies and its time we retire them all and move forward.. we had the opportunity with GEJ and instead of moving forward, we moved backward ( even if we dont want gej, we should have looked for someone better, more futuristic and not going back because a progress is a progress even if its 0.01% but instead we went back to the old ways and here we have the result)...
im not talking about the good or bad quality of obi but the implication of having him at this time...

Also you should know that political loyalty dont develop a nation...if you want a nation to develop, pray your politicians dont have loyalty to their political ways but to their dreams for the nation that bring them in because almost all politicans have good intentions but political loyalty derail them once in but here in nigeria we are loyal to fault, which was why we hardly criticise those that have done something good for us even if they are evil and satanic but the igbos are not that big on political loyalty which is why you hardly see a successful political gofdather among them and its also a plus for us this time cos we dont need silly loyalty now(if you think im wrong check all successful nation and you can easily the role lack of political loyalty does to their politics e.g england, usa, china etc)

Now you're talking!

But let's leave Tinubu and Atiku out of the discussion. We have done the comparison based on current realities and we know who is better- Reason I said PO looks good on paper. However, I've learnt that the best judge of future performance is historical performance. There's a high probability that someone who has done something in the past would replicate it, all other things being equal.

Now back to my original question. What was life like for the Anambra people when PO was a Governor. We know it's impossible to please everyone, but were the majority people happy? Also, It shouldn't be difficult to mention one or two verifiable things (should be more though) the did to better people's lives.

It really funny how an adult can be deceived to to make wrong choice during election. So if some like Reno, Fkk, El rufia's son(who always attack the south east), Dino etc comes out for the post of the president in this our diverse country, you will still have doubts about electing them? Thus thread smells like what them Apc cooked in the kitchen. Vote for BAT since you don't know who has the best interest of the country at heart among all those contesting.

Just move on to the next thread. Your kind are quick to spot. With all the right decisions your adult self has made, see where it has led you. Everybody just has to be APC, PDP or LP to you.

If indeed you are a neutral person, then asking anyone to tell you about any candidates ain't the right way to go.. The internet is there for you to research all you need to know.. Approach all info wit an open mind and explore all you read, expand your imagination and you can easily have your answers.. The only reason why we all go to school is to be able to infer from gigantum of info at our disposal and make decision..just try and approach all info with an open mind.. I'm sure you will get to fall in love with obi at the end

A section of my post says "this is part of my own research". I thank you for your suggestion but I've enough online already. As you know, there are tons of false info and propaganda online these days. Same strategy the "Sai Babsla" menace thrived on in 2015. So, it's a combination of online plus direct enquiries of first hand info and common sense.

Who better to ask than the people who lived, worked and experienced his administration as a Governor.

Politics / Anambra People, Please Help Make Sense Of This 2023 Election by Lindner: 2:45pm On Oct 07, 2022
A friend and I are planning to come home for holiday towards the election period. We both have valid voters card.

Note: We are both 100% politically neutral. We also don't give a **** about religion, ethnicity e.t.c

We just don't want a repeat of the "Sai Baba" hype of 2015 that brought us all to this very point as a country.

Supporting the Sai Baba movement has haunted me ever since. My eye just clear from the very first month Buhari became President. It's been a disaster!!! Unfortunately, alot of people can't run away from the country like we did.

So the race is looking more like it's going to be between Peter Obi and Asiwaju and the media hype is deafening.

I know all about Asiwaju's achievement in Lagos since I lived and worked in Lagos for almost a decade and I also know much about his not-so-good record.

On the other hand, I don't know much about Peter Obi other than he was once a Governor. Never been to Anambra before but he looks like a good alternative.

In the spirit of not repeating the "Sai Baba" error by supporting either Asiwaju or PO without asking intelligent questions, please (People of Anambra) help itemize or summarize his success stories as a Governor as well as his bad reputation. Only Anambra people or if you know the history of Anambr very well abeg.

PS: PO's supporters around here don't know either but are afraid to ask or too lazy to research. This is part of my own research. They said his achievement is that he paid salaries and pensions on time.

I'm highly disappointed I follow you. This is based on your judgment of who Peter Obi is and what his motives are. I'm hugely disappointed with your sense of judgment. If you are really keen to see Nigeria work you won't be in a dilemma.

You're disappointed that I'm neutral or that I'm not rooting for the same candidate as you?

There are millions like me who are undecided and there's absolutely nothing wrong about that. Heck, there's nothing wrong if we both support different candidates. It doesn't make either of us less patriotic than the other. It's all just points of view.

Career / Re: My Experience As A Banker by Lindner: 12:31pm On Jul 23, 2022
Mystery2020:
"They finally employed you. I hope you have a strong shoe", she said. I did not understand what the teller meant.

I had spent about a quarter in this new generation bank, I was ridiculed, insulted and bullied by the head teller and cash officer who is a Unilag graduate, the branch manager (BM) who once accused me of stealing, and my new supervisor who just got back from maternity leave.

This new supervisor, Fatima, was a curvy ebony naturalised Hausa-Fulani woman. One day, she asked if I have a lover. Then told me to come along with her for a drink. She wanted to take me out after the naming ceremony of the head teller's new baby, but I refused to attend. The following week, she began telling other staff members that I am stubborn. This was the genesis of my problem with her.

A lot of flirting used to happen in that place. Only two of the women out of eight were spared; one Yorubanised Hausa woman and maybe the CSM. Even the CSM gave me flirty looks several times. One of the tellers once called me gay. Asking if I don't have erections.

A new girl was hired. She was an introvert like me, but from Enugu state and a graduate of ESUT. Coincidentally, one of the Yoruba staff and a Business Administration graduate of OOU served in her village. This young lady, an Anglican, can be mistaken as the daughter of the Nollywood and Yoruba language actress popularly known as Lanre Hassan.

She made it known to management that she prefer to be in operations. However, she was brought to marketing. She said they told her point blank at head office HR that all employees in our cadre must first work as a marketer regardless of their qualifications. She had no choice but to accept the offer, so I decided to help her adjust and settle down.

The BM is a Catholic, who once forgot to attend Ash Wednesday mass despite always wearing a rosary. He is the temperamental type who takes first impression seriously. He is the first child of his family, and was often tasked with carrying the ladder up and down the streets of Nnewi for NITEL technicians when they're trying to fix the family's landline. His first car, a Honda "baby boy" Accord was stolen at gun point.

The BM, owns a shell company with address in Lekki where proceeds from dubious deals are laundered. Some of these proceeds he shared among the operations staff headed by one pretty lady; a charismatic Catholic & graduate of Ekpoma. I was told by a teller that this lady (CSM) once approached the manager to give her and the boys 'something'. This teller lives in a 'selfcon' in Surulere, which he inherited from his grandmother.

They tested me withing my first week of resumption. They sent me to a customer; a Micro Finance bank in Ikeja, with a t-fare double the required amount. When I returned, I wanted to return the balance but they all ignored me. They sent me to the MFB again the following day. I simply used the balance from the previous day. I thought I did the right thing, not knowing that they only wanted to know whether I came to Lagos to "count bridge". A question the 'Surulere' teller eventually asked me rhetorically.

They lied to me that I can not request for a t-fare lower than what I got previously again, because they will be queried by internal control. A lady in the customer care unit who attended FGGC Calabar, tried to ginger me not to answer them, but I gave in and continued to accept the bogus t-fare. Months later, the OOU graduate told me to stop behaving like a saint, that even my then supervisor who is married to an Mbaise woman collects double of that figure.

Just before the ESUT lady resumed, the manager withdrew the branch car from me, then gave me a target to open 80 accounts, sell 40 cards/POS, and mobilise ₦40 million, all within a month among other tasks. He was also using me as his P.A. and 'man Friday' for his exportation business & family Charity.

The manager refused to give the ESUT girl targets. He played a smart one by asking her, "Do you know what your target is"? She answered "no". While walking away & pointing to me, the manager said to her, "Ask him". I responded like an imbëcile; 80 accounts, 40 cards/POS, ₦40million monthly. To add salt to injury, the branch car was made available to her most times.

She was given tasks that will make her develop faster as a banker. While I was left to roam about the streets of Lagos on foot like a lunatic, who is possessed by a legion of vagabond spirits recently rendered homeless by D.K. Olukoya of MFM. Three months later, our mate in another branch told me he never go on errands without their branch car, and that he even took driving lessons with it. Na dis kind people fit the industry. Lol.

This new girl almost made the same 'first impression' blunders I made that earned me the title of "the laziest staff the manager as ever seen". I was there for her at every step, mentoring her and teaching her how to deal with them (other staff members). I will defend her in her absence whenever they speak ill of her, and always advise her on how to correct these bad impressions. I never knew that I myself had become the topic of their gossips. They gossip me even with cleaners, drivers and security men.

There was a day I came late due to an accident in which my knees were bruised. They were still in the morning meeting when I got there. The BM queried "why are you just coming? who died?". "I will make this place unbearable for you if you don't sit up".

Then the scheming against me began to heat up. She joined them to gossip me. There was a time I caught three of them by the elbow; Fatima, ESUT girl and CSM. The Ambrose Ali lady (CSM) quickly lied that the manager was asking of me. I knew she was lying but just had to leave the room. I was thinking the ESUT girl will gist me later. I am still waiting for the gist as I type this föölish epistle.

Then ESUT girl started mocking me codedly. "You are going again?" She will ask with a sadistic smile whenever I am about leaving for marketing.

For six months they tried to destroy me psychologically. I will save what they did for later. My mates in V.I., Apapa, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and somewhere else in Lagos Island which I won't mention got similar toxic treatments, but with different flavours.

Their breakthrough came during an arranged MPR meeting where I was thoroughly mocked by all the staff. The BM even called me a slowpoke. ESUT girl laughed at their insults to my dismay. Then the manager noticed my mood has changed, & sensed the opportunity to go in for the kill. Stand up!", he shouted at me, I refused. They all shouted, stand up! even the ESUT girl. Then the head teller said in Yoruba, what the hell is wrong with this boy?" That got me really pissed off. I scanned the room, my previous supervisor was biting his lips and smiling slightly. The manager snapped his fingers at me, making the impression of 'I will deal with you'.

The CSM called me for a chat, she pretended as if she cared. But her opening statement gave her away. "What you did was very rude", referring to the MPR incident. She wasn't present. Her, the first teller who asked me if I have a strong shoe, the FGGC Calabar lady, and one other teller, a man from Kwara, left the room to attend to a matter before the attack happened.

She kept going round in circles, asking stupid questions like do I have problems convincing people to open accounts? Asking me if anyone in the branch offended me. Asking me to tell her what they did wrong so that they can avoid such mistakes in the future. I was now convinced it was an exit interview. I got to know they planned the whole thing a couple of months before.

By 12 noon I got a one-page query for insubordination and two other offences; the third was a serious one. He copied the HR Business Partner who was a graduate of English Language, and 2 other executives. I won't be surprised if he did a Blind Carbon copy to the entire banking group. I replied in three lines. Business partner said I should report to a particular HR staff on Friday of that week.

On Monday, I reported to head office, HR staff has gone on leave. It was another HR officer who attended to me. A short lady, she covered her ID card so I didn't see her name. She asked, "What did you do to them that made them write all those things against you?" I did not do anything, I replied. "And they wrote all those things", she said. "They can not all be bad people", she continued. She said I showed too much anger in my reply to the query. She then went on to give me a lecture on anger management. I kept looking like mumu.

Worried about my calmness, she asked me what the problem was. I told her I have become addicted to painkillers. She asked what my future career plan is, and I told her. Of course it was not banking. She said there are more mad people in that particular sector. She said they will get back to me.

My system password was about to expire the week of the incident, but I didn't reset it. I came around Tuesday morning to know my fate, nothing.

On Wednesday, BM showed me a letter from HR Business Partner dated Tuesday, indicating that I was done. "This is what I have been telling you", he said. He asked me to login and send my handover note but I told him I can't. He was trying hard to hold his laugh.

A month later, I was getting strange calls from unknown numbers. Maybe they wanted to know if I have committed suicide. By the grace of God I am gainfully employed.

Bro sorry about all these.

But truthfully, you have a temperament that is not suited for the type of environment you found yourself.

I did this for 7 years plus and I can tell you it's the same at the branch level everywhere especially when you're in sales. You seem to be an introvert that takes minor things to heart. Don't let me get you started with the kind of insults I've received at MPRs. I've seen grown up married men being asked their age while presenting on stage in front of the whole division.

You just seem to get offended easily by people and you alienated everyone. Truth be told, all of them cannot be bad people. To survive in sales, you need your team. We had a Managenent Trainee like you. All 75 staff in the department hated him. I was his only friend but even me was just tolerating him.

In the bank, its not about you, it's the about the job

I don't know why you are linking Obi to IPOB. Is it because he's Igbo?
IPOB has made a statement that they are not connected to Peter Obi. Has Peter Obi ever supported IPOB??

Anyway, I hope you don't become sentimental when casting your votes. I hope you vote for who you think is the best man.

PS: If the country was working as it should be working, trust me, nobody would support secession and leave what is good to go for the uncertain.

Thought I should correct this.

My post specifically stated my discomfort in being in the same bucket with Igbos and their sympathizers who didn't wish Nigeria well but suddenly love the Country so much. It's definitely not for the love of the country. I went ahead to state there may be ulterior motives whether PO is aware or not.

If I had proofs that boko haram members are promoting a particular candidate, I would say the same of that candidate. Perhaps because boko haram members are not as active on social media as Igbos. In the case of Igbos, we know their frontliners and we know who they're promoting. You wouldn't need to work too hard on facebook and Twitter to find this out .
I didn't make any comments because of PO's ethnicity or religion. It's unfortunate that we've reduced every discussion to ethnicity and religion. Every conversion quickly degenerates into ethno-religious clashes.

Just my opinion.

Being half smart is more dangerous of being not smart.
May God grant you wisdom.

I criticized the three candidates, but you decided to attack me for including your candidate. Not calling you IPOB but sounds like the IPOB model to me. Truthfully, your candidate looks good on paper but if only you could discuss with civility like others have done. Makes me feel if he does become president and he fails to perform, you and your likes will enter overdrive mode with this same model if anyone dares to speak up.

Don't you think you and your likes are doing more damage than good to his candidacy?

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this forum. It is good to realize that there exists unprejudiced people who are neither ready to believe political gimmicks nor torn between ethnic-religious lines. All the present top candidates for the 2023 elections are rogues. In a lawful Nigeria, they will either be serving or have served jail terms making them disqualified for the office of the presidency.

The man in the picture was my expectation to run for presidency. He was GEJ's minister of Agriculture and excelled. As head of AFDB, he has been excelling and constantly making grounds. When he was investigated by the West for corruption, he was found guiltless. This is someone that has worked and his achievements show not Peter Obi, who worked for 8 years and has not brought a single foreign investment to Anambra state. Nigeria lost by not fielding a candidate like Akinwunmi Adesina, Donald Duke, etc.

Please ignore those insulting you. To them neutrality is a crime, shows you why Reno comes online to complain about them all the time.

I believe Nigeria has many people who can turn things around or at least start the process. The problem is with the pool from which we are selecting our leaders. It's the same people. Think about it, each of the candidates have at one time or the other shared political parties with one another.

Are you too blind to see that you are wickedly destroying Peter Obi's future chances by this horrible unforgettable Campaign attacks?!

But look at you Africans, simple debate you can't have it, yet want Democracy

BIG SHAME!!!!!!!

.

Please just ignore them. I delberatley didn't respond to their insults directly. Seeing people objectively canvassing for their candidates really is a thing a joy. There are many like me who are torn between choices and may see some eye opening points and decide to vote for whom ever. It's our right to have varying views and exercise it.

It beats me that some are bitter and toxic towards others just because they have an opinion other than their. Heck, they are toxic towards a neutral person.

We are all frustrated about the situation of Nigeria but there's nothing that guarantees that one candidate will perform when he becomes the president. We just don't know that. If I like, i vote for a lizard on the ballot box, it's my constitutional right. Vote for yours and let the best win. If they're angry that I'm voting a lizard, make me see reasons like others have been doing on this thread, don't insult.

Looking at the three most popular candidates in the forthcoming election, I can say I've never been more confused.

Was discussing with some of my guys and I won't kid myself, it's a decision for the least evil choice among the three. Sorry to say, if these are the best Nigeria has to offer again (as always), we're still in deep shit.

ATIKU
He's been an active participant in the shit we find ourselves as a country today. When that name is mentioned, what I hear is corruption and the continuation of institutionalized corruption and bad governance. He was once a VP, so he has no point to proof. He created part of the problem we're in.

BAT
Too many baggages. The fact that allegations cannot be proven does not mean they are false. It may just mean the perpetrator is to smart to cover his tracks. Plus, this man should just be resting and taking care of his health. Looks too frail. The complexity of our problems require agility. I just don't see how BAT can give even 50% of himself to the job consistently over 4 or 8 years. And I keep hearing about how he looted Lagos state dry.

PO
Looks good on paper but I can't just see any evidence of historical performance except vague statistics. They said he transformed Anambra. If today's Anambra
is the transformed version and the standard for performance, all hope may be lost. And again, I'm weary of the 2015 rhetorics of "never-do-wrong, ultimate solution to all our problems" that made Buhari president. I'm also not just comfortable rooting for the same candidate as Igbos, their sympathizers and people who didn't wish Nigeria well but all of a sudden are interested in the country. Seem to me there's an ulterior motive (whether PO is aware ot not). I just don't want to help them gain power by contributing my vote- whatever the motive.

Here is my dilemma and some of the real issues to be discussed when campaigning for your candidates instead of the ethno-religious nonsense that is plaguing us as a nation. The standard is so low to the point that our expectations are pathetic. Our best candidates are just a bunch of people from the same stock.

Long post !!!

It's 2:30am and strangely, an experience I had with a childhood friend many years back is keeping me awake. I feel writing about it would help others.

We were kids in the same neighbourhood. Deji (Not real name) was a love child from an unwanted teenage pregnancy. As with most similar cases, he ended up with the grandma.

He hawked all manner of things from morning till evening everyday. Constantly abused and assaulted, on daily basis by uncles, aunts and even grandma. It wasn't uncommon to see fresh wounds on his body every new day. Deji wasn't enrolled in school, couldn't read nor write, wore no shoes (As far as I could recall), sometimes wore half torn clothes. The whereabouts of his parents were unknown.

His fate in life seemed to have been sealed from birth.

The only source of joy for Deji was football. He would join the rest of the kids to play football when his guardians were not at home, switching between monitoring his grandma's petty trade and playing.

We all wanted to be footballers. Some adults in the neighbourhood had gone on to be professional footballers, even internationally. One of them played for Lazio. The twist is that Deji sucked at football. To say he was poor at football was an understatement, he was horrible. It seemed hawking was his life mission, perhaps he would have gone on to become a great salesman. But he was terrible at hawking too. He rarely sold anything and he lost money frequently.

He seem doomed in life.

In retrospect, if I was asked who would be the least likely to succeed in life among my childhood friends, he would be the undisputed number one. I'm sure our other childhood friends would have a similar sentiment.

OUR ENCOUNTER

Fast forward over a decade later. I was a 300L student in one of the Universities. One afternoon, a classmate of mine told me someone asked after me but they gave him my hostel and room number. "Okay"

Got to the hostel that evening and I was given the same message. "Someone asked after you". They also didn't get his name.

The next day, in class, I was standing in front of a guy, smiling at me sheepishly. He donned a black suit, nice tie, sharp hair cut and over 6ft tall. He didn't look like a student so I was woondering who he was.

He mentioned my name and told me he heard I was studying at this department. He said he knew that course is what I would study because I've always loved doing stuffs like that from childhood. "Who the hell is this talking about my childhood". I was not going to be fully prepared for the response I got. He introduced himself as Deji my childhood friend and I immediately saw the resemblance. His childhood ordeal in my memory and the image standing in front of me was a "miracle".

He spoke both Yoruba and impeccable English. He was in my University to represent the Univeristy of Ibadan in some inter-school academic competion of some sort. That news gave me goose bumps. How did he get into UI talkless of representing UI?

When my mum and my elder sister met him, without even hearing his story, they started shedding years. I wouldn't get into the details of the unimaginable things he told me pe passed through to where he was.

We parted and I would later hear from him about 5 years later. I was job hunting at the time. He was already immensely successful with his career and living with his son and wife.

THE MORALE

The morale of this long post is that life could impose unfair disadvantages on us sometimes, but it's never an excuse. For one, I think being a Nigerian is an unfair disadvantage. I've seen the other side and compared it. IT IS RELATIVELY MORE DIFFICULT TO SUCCEED IN NIGERIA WITH ANYTHING(perhaps with the exception of fraud). This factor, coupled with some of our individual circumstances put us in a position of comparative disadvantage, sometimes. For example, I was born the same year as Mark Zuckerberg. He founded Facebook at a time when I had never had the opportunity to even operate a computer. He had access to a computer relatively early in life. Today, I'm a successful Software Engineer in my own right, but the journey could have been easier and faster. Seemed an unfair and unbalanced comparison, but it is what it is.

Wherever position of disadvantage or limitation life has imposed on you, may you find the courage to crawl your way out today and be world class at whatever you choose to do in life and I pray you find true success.

Cheers.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: What Should One Consider When Taking Up A Remote Job? by Lindner: 1:24pm On Apr 18, 2022
1. Do your due diligence when applying for remote work. I receive an average of 2 fraudulent emails per week from unintelligent fraudsters. The email is my dedicated application email. They probably got it from past applications I submitted or othe related means.

2. Any opportunity that involves paying money before employment is mostly likely fake no matter how polished the process looks.

3. Don't embark on unnecessary take-home (coding assignment). What you'll realise is that some freelancers in India are delivering your coding interview (assignment) to their clients. They never wanted to employ you in the first place. They have a freelance contract they can't do or don't have time to do (either the full task or part of the contract). They just simply open a job advert and give it applicants to complete. After submission, you either never receive any feedback or they inform you that your application was unsuccessful. You need experience and wisdom to filter through this.

4. Remote job requires alot of discipline. As I'm typing now, I have a heap load of tasks to complete for the two companies I work with but I'm not motivated to start even though it's Monday.

Whatever you do, never give up.

Hello Developers in the house. Seeing that a lot of aspiring developers are here, I thought of opening this thread to give our experienced Developers a chance to share and inspire aspiring developers through the following questions been answered.

1. How long did it take you to learn, before you got your first remote job

2. What was the pay

3. Finally, give some times on things you'd do differently if you were to start all over.

I got my first job within the first 4 months of learning. $10/hour. Do not despise the days of small beginnings. grin

I don't think I would do anything differently. I was mentored by experts.

Romance / Re: I Want To Commit Suicide...but With Something Pleasurable by Lindner: 9:00pm On Jan 23, 2022
Supremedrizzy:
After a period of struggle without making a head way, I've decided to end my frustrated life. But no I won't use sniper or jump into a river. I've decided to go back from where I came, I will keep having raw sex till I contract a disease and die, I don't care if it is HIV, covid or even Ebola.

Getting ladies into my bed seems to be the only thing I'm good at, I undertook sperm retention for months and worked my ass off yet I couldn't make a head way. So please don't tell me to chase money, I don chase am tire.....I no see who know road follow.

I'm broke but ladies won't leave me alone, just a hello and they are all over me. I make it clear I don't have anything yet they won't let me be. I wish I could attract money like that but I've done my best. I have had some for this week, I will refresh and continue next week.

Let me just pass away abeg, nothing dey this life.

Perhaps the most irresponsible topic I've seen here on Nairaland.

You've tried and not made "head way". People who made head way, if they had resigned and quitted on themselves, would they have made it? Some of those genuinely successful folks out there, do you think they made it after 6 months or 1 year of trying?

What is with this our generation and instant gratification?

Now you want to commit suicide by having thoughtless unprotected sex. Shame on you!!!

Your points are valid. I had an interview last week, and was asked why my github didn't match my years of experience, lol I had to pause. since then I stop applying and now focus on updating my github.

Yeah. Without actual project evidence, everyone can claim they have 10 years experience freelancing.

I remembered one of my interviews, when the interviewer shared his screen with me, he actually had one of my projects opened in his browser tab. He got it from github, followed the README, downloaded the dependencies and ran the application locally. I was shocked when I saw it how far these guys go. He told me to explain some parts of my code and why I used that particular approach.

as a working dev, do you get a fixed time to complete a task?

Sure.

Most tasks have a deadline and other devs depend on your output as well.

Is this THE SEUN?

Does not necessarily mean everyone on this thread is looking for work though.

Most times I'm on nairaland when I feel like throwing my system through the window or smashing it against the wall out of frustration. Like right now. 15 minutes task has turned to 4 days of bugs from hell.

I don't know why I read this screaming. Your points are valid though. It's part of the reason most recruiters ask for your Github link when applying.

Unfortunately, going by the feedbacks on this thread, a lot of people don't give a damn about it. Most of the applications i sent out without getting a response from recruiters was when I had scanty github contributions.

Thank God for mentors, it changed dramatically. I didn't know there was something called job application package specific to software development roles.

1. Completed github profile with solid contributions (Open source projects inclusive). With links to your email, portfolio, linkedin e.t.c)

2. Professional linkedin profile. Also tailored and well crafted for software development.

3. Resume (Tailored for software development roles).
4. Cover letter (Needless to say it should be tailored to a particular role).
5. I even built a solid Angelist profile.
6. Stackoverflow profile.

"Miraculously", these changed the game for me and saved me from blindly applying to jobs without getting any response. Since then, I've worked at multiple projects and orgs (only US orgs).

Plus my experience, now I get an average of four unsolicited invitatitions from head hunters per month.

The reason for this shalaye is that technical knowledge is not enough. Sadly.

If you were a recruiter I would say using github as a yard stick to confirm one's commitment and programming skill level will be a flaw in your judgement. Not everyone is given to every industry technology trend. Give people the benefit of the doubt to prove themselves. Trends come and go.

Ps: I have read through all your responses on this thread.

How you even call git a trend baffles me.

This is not about me, it is just what it is whether you like it or not.

Please tell me again, how would you pick out 20 applicants out of 1000 (without work experience) for an interview? You'll interview all 1000? Or you'll send all 1000 a DSA to complete(as has been mentioned here) and review each?

And I'm not a recruiter.

I'm just wondering, what is the problem people have with committing their codes?

You have no experience, how else do you show someone who doesn't know you and probably thousands of miles away what you can do? Word of mouth?

Plus, almost every team uses git in their everyday activity. This is the tool that you'll most likely be using IF you get hired. Can you even use it? Git and Github is like the most basic tool....

I dont know how else I can emphasize this especially for someone without experience. You have no portfolio and then you have phobia of committing your work so that people can just go there and check you out and reach out to you.

I'm curious what these people send in their job applications. Just resume? We focus too much on the technical aspect of our industry. The professional part is extremely important as well.

Before I learned anything, I learned git first and best practises. Thanks to the advice from mentors ahead of me.

So what is the issue here? No one is saying you should know everything about git. Two commands: "git add" and "git commit" intermittently as you code.

I think people should begin to focus more on being professionally attractive as we are acquiring this so called knowledge.

For emphasis, save yourself the time. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU DON'T SHOW THEM. NOBODY WILL FIND YOU IF YOU DON'T MAKE YOURSELF "FINDABLE". From the day you start writing "Hello World", create a github account and commit everything.

Well...top tech companies are big on the whole whiteboard(DSA) interview process. Especially when interviewing for a software engineering role.

They don't really care about the number of projects you've done or your GitHub repos, even if they might be used for screening. It is crazy but it is the standard.

Thankfully many other not-too-techy companies would do with just your projects and brute force programming skills grin

Does big tech companies even interview an applicant with zero experience?

Even the start-ups, how do they go about inviting 20 people out of 1000 applications?

What are the criteria?

DSA is important but if you have nothing to show other than "Software Developer" in front of your name in today's world, without referral through your network, you're just trying to cut a tree with a razor blade.

True.

Many companies don't do data structures and algorithms interviews. It's straight up project-based.

I think there's a subreddit where companies in that category are listed.

There are 2 developers:

Developer A: Data structures and algorithm guru. Has no evidence of real life projects or any contribution to any project.

Developer B: Has a very rich portfolio of complex projects with evidence by his git commits. You can see his coding style. You can see logic and good use of data structures and algorithms in his code base. You know where he is in terms of experience.

The truth is before you're even invited for that Data structures technical interview, there must hav been some kind of screening process (except you applied through refferal). Most often, such interviews are to further screen out applicants.

How do I know you can code if I've not seen anything you've done in the past and you have never worked as a developer before. Worse, I don't know you or anything about you except that you're calling yourself a softwarr developer in your application.

The easiest way to reduce doubts about your inexperience is to show what you've done. How? Portfolio of projects. Where? Github.
