Jobs/VacanciesRe: My Interview Experience by Lofx: 11:20am On Jan 01, 2016
Nihilist:
STAR approach is only useful for framing answers to competency based questions, or when discussing deliverables at previous jobs.

I fail to see how he could used STAR approach to answer the 2 questions he outlined in his OP.

The way the OP should have answered the 2nd question is like this:

"What do I think about the statement 'The ends justify the means?'

Well, the statement itself arises from a book written a few centuries ago by Nicolo Machiavelli.

Machiavelli had written the book stemming from his experience in politics and realised that many rulers of old often faced dilemmas with serious consequences, and his statement serves to encourage decisiveness in an era when ethical considerations were often secondary concerns.

These days, organisations still encounter dilemmas in the very competitive and often ruthless business world, but the difference is that ethical behaviour is now a primary concern.

I believe that following due process is very important in this day an age, and I will very much look to do things by the book(where possible) because The End doesn't always justify the Means"

......
You can actually adapt STAR ...
Even your proposed answer to question 2 can be extended with a situational context to move it from a theoretical narrative to a relatable discussion that is based on the candidate's own experiences/ personal philosophy.

Also for question 1. When someone challenges your competence or ability to perform a role on the basis of your course of study, the real question is that do you have a practical understanding of the role and do you have what it takes to perform it well? Convince me. I would dimension the facets of the role/ function and provide details of my experiences and results in such areas.

athorello:
Op, don't mind me o. This is what happens when your over rehearsed and thought you'll impress during the interview. Even when you rehearse, try to answer questions from your soul like a STAR. This two questions provided occasions in which you demonstrate that you can hold your ground by arguing your points why HR is related to human management and boldly stating that you don't believe in the statement that the end justifies the means. Answer questions like you're describing, illustrating or explaining. Then learn how to buy time.
But recruitment process for naija na dead. Series of tests, presentations and interviews spanning months to years. What's the company's name again?
Ditto: nlng, Unilever, Dangote, et al.
I agree with you on structuring your answer in a descriptive way that substantiates your experience. When I interview people I look out for them to structure their answers to cover the STAR model and I often have to rephrase the questions to ensure that all are clearly answered. I am more impressed when the candidate naturally covers it in this structure without the nudging

S - situation/context
T - task
A - actions
R - results

Jobs/VacanciesRe: My Interview Experience by Lofx: 10:16am On Jan 01, 2016
It is possible he wanted you to dimension all the technical facets of an HR function in the organisation and relate how your educational background or prior experiences have prepared you to handle each areas which you mentioned you covered. Depending on how technical the interviewer wants to be and how you answered initially could have been the reason for the rough tackle so if your initial answer summarised HR as "managing people" without quickly elaborating on the specifics, that could put a technical person on the offensive. It's like when you apply for Head of finance role and your summary of how you will do the work is that you will manage the company's finances without quickly drilling down to the specific areas like budgeting, working capital management, financial reporting etc.

APQC process classification framework (PCF) defines the following process/functional domains within HR function. Depending on the organisation's maturity, some of the areas may not be applicable.

Develop and Manage Human Capital

7.1 Develop and manage human resources planning, policies, and strategies
7.2 Recruit, source, and select employees
7.3 Develop and counsel employees
7.4 Manage employee relations
7.5 Reward and retain employees
7.6 Redeploy and retire employees
7.7 Manage employee information and analytics
7.8 Manage employee communication
7.9 Deliver employee communications

Wish you the best in 2016.

Tech_W: Hello, your inverter static switch is either faulty or it's control circuit is not functioning properly, hence it sometimes shorts the output to the ground.
Thank you very much. I suppose I should report this to the company that supplied it as it is still under warranty.
Science/TechnologyRe: All your Inverter problems by Lofx: 12:56pm On Dec 10, 2013
Rather than automatically switch to inverter power when ever gen or phcn power goes out...my inverter sometimes gives a loud overload warning beep and i have to turn it off and back on. This happens say 1 out of 5 times... and it happens even when I have just standing fan and just an 11watt

the overload warning beep also comes on sometimes when I turn on the socket powering my TV, Decoder and home theatre. Similar to the previous instance, I just turn off the inverter and back on.

Nairaland GeneralRe: High Death Rate On The Lekki Expressway by Lofx: 6:05am On Aug 30, 2013
A friend once sent the petition below to LCC .see their response below... (this was in January 2013)

Petition on Inadequate Street Lighting and Pedestrian Bridges between Toll 1 and Toll 2

I am a frequent user of the Lekki Epe Express way and I have been paying my tolls as do other road users. However, I have noticed that the street lighting is rarely functional between Lekki Phase 1 roundabout and the new Toll gate at Chevron. The road is extremely dark with the lights not on most of the time and also the sparing distribution of pedestrian bridges that there is such a high risk of collision with pedestrians crossing the roads indiscriminately. LCC needs to have minimum service levels on the availability of street lighting and pedestrian bridges (with mechanisms to enforce utilisation). We can not be paying so much in toll tariffs and still be enduring risk of hitting pedestrians along the poorly lit roads.

LCC responds....

Dear xxxx,

Thanks for your feedback and patronage.

The tolls  being paid at the Admiralty Circle Plaza  only cover Road section 1, that is km 0-  6,  starting  from the Falomo loop to the Lekki 2nd Roundabout, around Marwa Bus-stop, and to the best of our knowledge, the street lights along that road section have been functioning so far.  However, the street lights within Road Section 2 [which is from Marwa bus-stop to the Ikota River] should also be powered on, but LCC’s contractual obligation is to provide street lights powered by PHCN. Therefore, where PHCN power supply is not available or is erratic, this will clearly have an impact on the availability of street lighting along the relevant section about which you are concerned.  We will continue to consult with LASG and the PHCN authorities as we have always done, to ensure that the expressway receives priority feed in order to have the current challenges significantly assuaged.

Regarding the pedestrian bridges, kindly note that the safe use of the expressway by motorists and pedestrians has been a subject of great concern to LCC, and our regular reminders to motorists and pedestrians alike about the need to observe speed limits and safety guidelines along the expressway will attest to this.  Even as we have it in our plan to position additional pedestrian bridges along the axis, we have already installed some at designated points on the road where we have high volume of pedestrian traffic and school children, while we also have sidewalks that can be used by pedestrians safely, without the risk of accidents.

While there is still more work to do, we continue to assure you and other road users that we take human life very seriously indeed, even as we continue to maintain and operate the toll road. In the meantime, we also appeal to all road users to drive with care and attention at all times, especially when they know that they are driving through an area intended for pedestrians to cross.

Thanks once again for your continued support and patience, and rest assured of LCC's continued commitment to providing high quality road assets and related services along the Lekki-Epe Axis of Lagos.

Yours sincerely,

I was fortunate to get a job before service which was available as part time through my service year and i got something better a month after service.

I had been scared about the risk of not easily getting a job but I realised that that fear made me not to consider paid employment as my first option coming out of school.

my advice to any young school leaver or fresh nysc grad is to quickly the set out to develop an alternative skill. Don't get caught up with feeling too helpless. Time itself is an asset. I can tell you confidently that the year after graduation for me was one of my best in terms of exploratory personal development. I learnt about 5 web and graphic design applications including photoshop, corel, dreamweaver, flash, Maya 3D (practically from novice to relatively high proficiency skill). I was on a quest to get formal training in a design studio to further improve my knowledge when I got my first job offer. To sum it up, time is an asset and we should invest wisely.

SportsBrazilians Protest Hosting Of FIFA World Cup- World Cup Only Benefits Outsiders! by Lofx(op): 11:07pm On Jun 18, 2013
The Brazilian people are not taking it sitting down anymore as they lead protests against the Government's huge expenditure on the hosting of the Worldcup admidst the sufferings of the larger population.

http://edition.cnn.com/2013/06/18/world/americas/brazil-protests-montague/index.html?hpt=hp_c1#cnn-disqus-area

Belo Horizonte, Brazil (CNN) -- At 11 pm, the tired and the injured gathered in Belo Horizonte for one last expression of discontent.
More than a thousand sat in Praca Sete de Setembro, a square in the center of the city, chanting against the government and the police. But they weren't the crowd's only enemy. A sign hung from a nearby balcony. It read: "Anti Copa." On the pavement the words "A FIFA é Foda" had been painted: "F*** You, FIFA," in Portuguese. The roads had been blocked off by the military police, who watched the protesters from afar. A bank of police horses chewed on piles of hay left for them on the road.

Daniel Sanabria, a technician in his 20s, stood nearby cradling his arm, an ice pack on top of a bloody bandage. He peeled it off to reveal an ugly red welt on his left hand. "A bullet," he explained.

The day was supposed to have been something of a coronation for Belo Horizonte, a relatively quiet and small city -- if a population of 2.5 million people could ever be called small -- surrounded by mountains, an hour's flight north of Rio de Janeiro.
Its famous Mineirao football stadium had just hosted its first match of the 2013 Confederations Cup, a 6-1 victory for African champions Nigeria against the tiny Pacific islanders of Tahiti. It was a dry run for next year's World Cup finals which return to Brazil for the first time since 1950, a chance to prove that the country was ready to host the most world's most popular sports tournament. Instead, military and civilian helicopters flew overhead, roads were blocked and military police stationed throughout the city as a series of protests sparked by anger about the cost of living, poor quality education and high transport costs took place at the same time as the match.

The initial spark for the protests was a rise in bus fares in Sao Paulo. The anger was such that, even in a country often caricatured for its deification of soccer, the World Cup, its surrogate cousin the Confederations Cup and the game's global governing body FIFA, have all become symbolic of corruption and waste. Protesters believe the tournament has seen the rich line their pockets, while the poor make do with crumbling public services. The World Cup, it seems, has sparked something that has lain dormant for a long time.

"Tonight this is about all of Brazil, we are moving against corruption. We have been suffering for too many years," said Tainara Freitas, a teacher who had remained with the protest until the end.
"And this year we rise. We have woken up. We are on the streets like in Turkey and Greece. They have made us wake up about this. The World Cup in Brazil is about too much money. There are too many poor people suffering. The World Cup isn't good for Brazil. It will bring tourists and money but this is not good for poor people."
Earlier in the day 15,000 protesters had marched towards the Mineirao as hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets across the country in the first coordinated mass protests of this size since the end of Brazil's military dictatorship in the mid 1980s.

Police responded with tear gas, firing rubber bullets into the crowd, and beat protesters who burned barricades in return. I watched Tahiti's brave performance on the pitch as the protesters gathered outside, speaking to Brazilian sports writer Igor Resende at half time about the match and the reasons for the anger. A few hours later he was in hospital after apparently being shot in the back with a rubber bullet.
"The police came with a brutal force," recalled Resende. "I didn't see the protesters do anything. The police threw a bomb and it exploded in the middle of the protest. Then police began to shoot."
Resende said he was hit in the back by a rubber bullet as he ran away.
"In that moment I just ran. I thought that if I looked back the police would probably shoot me again. I don't think the police are well prepared. They are badly paid. They have a bad life. They act like this because they are scared."
But Resende said he has doubt that the police response was related to the Confederations Cup.
"I spoke to one of the highest ranked police guys in state yesterday. He told me 3,500 policeman were on the streets because of the game. They are acting to avoid conflict near the stadiums. The police and FIFA don't want the protesters near the stadiums."
For FIFA, who have been critical of Brazil's preparations for the World Cup, the protests are an unwelcome complication for a tournament already long behind schedule. "People are using the platform of football and the international media presence to make certain demonstrations," said FIFA president Sepp Blatter who, alongside the Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, was booed by the crowd at the opening ceremony on Saturday.
Speaking in an interview in Rio on Monday, he said: "You will see today is the third day of the competition this will calm down. It will be a wonderful competition."
But the protests have not calmed down. The day after Blatter's interview, the biggest demonstrations yet took place. Sanabria and Freitas agreed that the Confederations Cup, which continues for another 12 days, is an opportunity to make their voices heard.

I asked them both what messaged they wanted to send FIFA and the football world.
"Please, please, make more pressure on our government, on the Brazilian government to look out for us," said Freitas before she made her way back into the protest, Sanabria still clutching his injured hand.
"They are looking out for people outside the country, they aren't looking for us, for the poor people."
The protestors now have the world's attention.

Christianity EtcRe: "Footprint of God" Found In South Africa (Video) by Lofx: 1:32pm On Jun 03, 2013
The footprint isnt literally God's. Just an expression. The deeper question to be raised are really on the existence of Giants on earth at some point in our history. Google or Youtube on Nephilims and be enlightened rather than all the unwarranted attacks. Even the Bible talks about the existence of giants that were borne out of the union of some angels and the daughters of men. When the Israelites went to spy on the land of Canaan the bible talks about the inhabitants being so huge that the israelites were like grasshoppers unto them. David battled Goliath a giant and Goliath had other brothers who were also giants.

Emphasis is on Giants on Earth....

ComputersGraphic Card Issues On Sony Vaio AR630E 17" Laptop by Lofx(op): 4:50am On Mar 16, 2013
I got a 17" Sony Vaio AR630 laptop a few years back (2007_-2008) - supposedly highend at the time - Core 2 Duo, Nvida GeForce 8400MT 256MB, 2GB RAM, 32HDD, Blu Ray etc I named it the Kracken ("release the kracken" ;-)). After about 1 year of light usage, I was playing NFS and my system froze. I later learnt it was a graphic card issue.

I contacted Sony Nigeria (Dove Limited) at the time and they said they were not yet able to support or service sony vaio laptops (besides I imported from US). I then had to go to computer village were some guys opened up the laptop, did some abrakadabra and it started working. Problem relapsed affter about a week of light use (no more gaming). I had the guy take it back and he returned it again, same thing. 3 days and problem returned.

Now I have gone to Sony Nigeria again (2010-11), this time they can service vaio products but won't accept mine cos it had been tampered with. They offered to order a mother board replacement which costs about 120K but I will have to go and install myself since the system had been tampered with. I thought the quote was outrageous considering that I can get a new laptop in that range. I got this for about 210 - 220K back then. It was meant to be high end spec for graphics design and gaming. So I jjust dumped this and its been gathering dust since then. Comes on sometimes but some oteher times it doesn't get past the Windows laoding screen. I can start it in Safemode to copy files I need but that's it. Can't attempt to load full services on it

Wondering what options I have now.
Can I sell it in its condition? For how much? Is it worth anything?
What other repair options that does not involve total motherboard purchase?
Should I chop it up and sell the parts?
Keep it as an artifact... My first laptop purchase?
What other options should I consider?

Please assist. I am tired of watching it go to waste year by year...
