The diagram below show the size and locations of the main broadband infrastructure which will be available in Africa by 2012. In Sub Saharan Africa
alone, this represents almost 26 Tbps of high speed broadband infrastructure available for personal and commercial applications. This will greatly reduce the bandwidth cost while improving quality of services.

PoliticsRe: Help bring Digital Libraries to Africa! by loma(op): 9:56pm On Feb 15, 2011
Also; With respect to Broadband Internet, in 2010, Africa had a lower broadband penetration rate than other continents with an average of 0.05% for select countries. Due to projected GDP per capita increases, many people, who cannot presently afford such access, will
be able to in 2020.

Also in 2020, the broadband penetration (according to Frost & Sullivan) is expected to be 20%, or 280 million people with access to broadband internet. Frost & Sullivan assert that the Telecommunications industry in Africa (particularly sub-SaharanAfrica) is booming and that Broadband Internet services are poised to spread rapidly as undersea cables come online.

Very simple-look at our model, which considers all that;

The first component, the Anchor, is a community provided space to house a physical collection
of resources. The anchor establishes community ownership and demonstrates a commitment to
the project. Each anchor will be environmentally appropriate, culturally relevant, and site
specific. The Anchor will house the physical collection of volumes, and function as both
collaborative and individual work environments.

The second component, the Agora, is the covered space adjacent to the anchor building. A
lightweight, environmentally efficient roof will transform this space into a usable area for
meetings and other activities. The Agora will have wireless Internet and be lit with low power
solar lights. It is a flexible social environment that serves as a catalyst for community building.

The third component, the Hub, is a modified shipping container with technology infrastructure,
workstations, reprographic equipment, and physical connections to the Internet. Each Hub will
be wired to allow broadband internet access, as well as capabilities for wireless access in and
around the unit. The Hub provides an economical solution to the technological backbone of the
modern library and houses online journals, bundled content for Education, Commercial &
Business, Health, Technology & Innovation, and Entertainment, and on-demand book printing
and binding which allows a community-generated collection of knowledge specifically tailored
to local interests.

@Kobo- No, there is no existing implementation, what you saw was an architecural design,W e are currently working on building the first prototype (estimated at around $50,000 for now). Initially, it would be use dfor a road show her ein the US to increase publicity and raise funds, before being deploye at our first site.

To determine the suitability of each LAA installation, the following 10 criteria will be evaluated:

1. Site Availability
2. Site Support
3. Population Served
4. Organizational/Community Partner
5. Infrastructure
6. Existence of Related Markets
7. Security
8. Legal Environment
9. Financial Environment
10. Content & Service Needs Appraisal

Who is this Kwame guy with an obnoxious first post. Mods, where una dey?
I actuall do know who 'Kwame' is, he and I work for the same company, and have had this debate several times ( last year thre was an health initiative that was to be brought to Nigeria or ANgola), and the same came up. But I still believe strongly that Nigeria's market cannot be compared to any other in Africa.
PoliticsRe: Help bring Digital Libraries to Africa! by loma(op): 6:57pm On Feb 15, 2011
Like Dayokanu mentioned earlier, we are looking at 5 sites, and its interesting that when we mention Nigeria, despite the population, everybdy brings up mention of all Nigeria's problems, and why Ghana/South Africa should be the first because of infrastructure/power.

My response has always been, if it works in Nigeria, it will work anywhere. So lets prove them wrong, we are a determined people ( minus government) and we lead Africa (in votes, and hopefully in libraries)!
PoliticsRe: Help bring Digital Libraries to Africa! by loma(op): 6:36pm On Feb 15, 2011
On the issue of printed items- if its printed by the librarian, they will have to work out lending mechanisms(understanding the nature of their people), but customers can also print books that they want- so suddenly, through partnerships with big publishers, you can get the latest version of the Physics 205 textbook, and not have to stay in line for the only copy available at the OAU reference library ( Great Ife!)

On advertising, this is our take-Socially Responsible Advertising: LAA will leverage its unique location in community and educational institution centers to provide ‘top of mind’ advertising services to socially responsible products and vendors.

PoliticsRe: Help bring Digital Libraries to Africa! by loma(op): 6:13pm On Feb 15, 2011
@Kilode; Local content is key, and one of the highlights of this project. People will be encouraged to create  and upload their own content (see Google Baraza with whom we plan to open discussions-http://www.google.com/baraza/en/thread?tid=3084c339e2379cf8), and the only printed books you will find in the library will be the ones that that community finds relevant, even if its not in English.

A further distinction of the LAA approach is that it allows communities to create their own libraries around what is important to them, as against being merely the recipients of discarded and donated American books. With the on-demand printing facility, people can print media that is in their own language, including original works and translations.  They can generate content for smaller libraries in neighbouring communities, while inexpensive, up-to-date textbooks can be printed for school children

The LAA idea is distinctive because it does not provide a packaged solution to problems it does not and cannot understand as intimately as affected communities. Rather, an LAA eLibrary provides the means for communities to create their own solutions. In essence, an LAA eLibrary is a ‘business in a box’ approach in that it allows individuals and communities to operate units and generate immediate economic benefit, while increasing the learning, educational, and social gathering capabilities of their communities.

PoliticsApplication Window Opens To The Wennovation Hub by loma(op): 12:04pm On Jan 07, 2011
Africa Leadership Forum (ALF) and LoftyInc Allied Partners Limited (LAPL), program partners in the recently launched Innovation Incubation Initiative (I-3), are pleased to announce the opening of the application window into the first permanent platform for business incubation in Nigeria.

The platform to be known as the Wennovation Hub ( www.wennovationhub.com ) occupies a thousand square feet exclusive space at ALF’s brand new headquarter facility at Lagos, in the capital city of Ikeja. The incubator will also have use of ancillary training and support space at the same brand new campus. LoftyInc will operate the facility in partnership with ALF.

Strategically positioned in the industrial district of Plot C, Obasa Road, off Oba Akran Road, the Wennovation Hub will be used for training, mentoring and developing the cutting edge ideas that will drive the new ECOWAS economy. Business space and funding will also be provided at the end of the initial 6-9 months duration program, starting March 2011.

We are seeking 15-25 bright young innovators, and incubating them using a unique model (collaborative partnership) we have developed in-house. Our goal is to incubate 3-5 high impact businesses annually. These businesses will be innovative, forward leaning and high growth: focused specifically on mass employment and reshaping the sectors within which they operate.

Spaces are limited. Application will close on February 4, 2011. Simply browse www.wennovationhub.com , click on the “Apply” tab and complete the application form. For more information- call or text, +234-8181976881.
