An alleged photo of a Muslim girl twerking while wearing the hijab has left many people shocked after her photos appeared online. A supposedly Muslim girl has left tongues wagging after she wore a hijab and twerked on stage before many people during a concert in Kampala, Uganda. The endowed woman dressed in a figure hugging dress left the crowd dazed as she wiggled her bum in all directions. However, what infuriated most people was the the choice of her dress as they accused her of having no respect for the hijab. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has given condition for the 2016 admissions, saying it will only give approval “after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.” The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said this in a statement on Sunday. Ojerinde said, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board wishes to state that the latest list of candidates sent to all the tertiary institutions contains candidates who qualified for screening based on the individual institution’s capacity. It’s not in any way an admission list. “However, if this list is not sufficient for the need of any institution, such institution can source from the omnibus printout earlier sent to them by the board. The public and all tertiary institutions should note that admission will only be approved by the board after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions. “The list, which is made up of candidates, who met the national cut-off point within the set criteria, is sent to the institutions. Again, for purposes of clarity, all institutions that have need for more can source from their omnibus printout as stated above. The candid intention of the board is to ensure that available spaces are adequately utilised.” The Federal Government had, on Saturday, clarified its ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission procedure. It said it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the Senate of any university or the academic board of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.” The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, also made the clarification in a statement by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben. Bem-Goong. He said the clarification became necessary “following conflicting reports in the media over the roles of universities and JAMB in admission under the new dispensation.” According to him, the role of JAMB is to conduct the UTME, compile the list of candidates whose scores meet the cut-off marks (180 and above) and send same to the universities. The institutions, he emphasised, would shortlist the candidates, using the agreed guidelines and thereafter return the shortlisted candidates to JAMB for verification of compliance with the guidelines and issuance of JAMB admission letters. “For the avoidance of doubt, any screening charges shall apply only to successful candidates, who have been issued admission by the universities of their choice,” Adamu stated. Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, has said the Senate of universities in the country should be responsible for setting standards for admissions into their institutions. Garba stated this while answering questions at the News Agency of Nigeria forum in Abuja. The vice-chancellor faulted the situation where JAMB and the Ministry of Education set standards for admission into the university. Garba stated, “Universities have autonomy by law; each university should set its criteria for taking students. “But of course, JAMB and the ministry are saying that because it is our country, we must have a policy that regulates, so that we have a good balance but not on quality. “A university Senate is supposed to set standard for accepting students that it takes and trains and graduates. “We are hoping that very soon, we will resolve this matter because it is getting more and more embarrassing. “Even the state universities have told the Federal Government that education is in the concurrent list in the constitution. “The Federal Government has no control and should not have control over a state university; they have a council appointed by the governor. “They can only fulfil NUC’s standard requirements, but not admission quota.’’ The ABU vice-chancellor explained that the minister’s directive, leading up to the scrapping of the post-UTME, had created an impasse in universities as they had yet to begin admissions. According to him, universities could not take the products of JAMB without further testing them. He said that universities, being the recipients of the candidates, should be able to select those they could train. Garba added, “We found it, as universities, that the post-UTME tests are the best to get the best. JAMB is only trying to improve, but still not perfect to a point that we can trust. “Post-UTME has a history; even when it started, JAMB encouraged us to do it. JAMB is improving, but it is not yet there because every year, we receive these products and we see what they are.” He said that in 2016, ABU had 49,000 applicants, who scored above 180 points while its admission capacity was 6,500. DaudaAbu:kwantinuu hearing |
The House of Representatives yesterday moved to prescribe punishment for employers in the country who either fail to pay salaries to their workers or pay workers salaries, wages and pensions late. The bill, sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila was, however, stepped down by the sponsor, following observations made by some members that the bill was not justifiable and could only come up through an Act. The speaker, Yakubu Dogara, who presided over the plenary, also in a diplomatic manner, advised the House Leader to have a second look at the bill and make all the necessary amendments on it, so it could be represented on the floor for consideration. The bill, entitled A bill for an act to prohibit late payment, non-payment and under payment of workers' wages, pension and other related emolument in Nigeria and prescribes penalties for violations and for other matters connected thereto" was slated for second reading yesterday before withdrawal. The House, after listening to the sponsor, resolved that since there was an existing minimum wage Act, the sponsor should convert it to an amendment to the minimum wage Act instead of coming as a fresh law. But in his lead debate, Gbajabiamila explained that the intention behind the bill was for "every employer of labour in Nigeria, whether private or public; and whether it is employing any worker on permanent or contract basis must ensure that all payment of wages, salaries, pensions and all benefits to workers are paid promptly without any delay weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly as may be agreed by parties in the contract of employment of the individual employee." According to him, non-payment or delay in the payment of workers' salaries and emoluments is an infringement on their rights as enshrined in the 1999 constitution. He lamented that evidence of workers being owed salaries in different organisations abound in the country. "If we must fight corruption, workers' salaries must be paid promptly because a worker deserves his wages," Gbajabiamila said. He further explained provisions in the bill: "An employer shall not hold on to the salary, wage, pension and any other benefit and emolument of any workman for a period of 7 (seven) days and above from the day the payment of such salary, wage, pension and any other benefit and emolument falls due save in the event of any force majeur. The proposed bill also prescribed penalties that defaulters should pay, which include the payment of 10 percent wage to those that default for a period of one to seven days, and 20 percent of one month wage for those who delay to pay between eight and 30 days. It further proposes payment of 30 percent of two months wage for employers that fail to pay between 30 to 60 days, while defaulters for 60 days and above; would pay 30 percent of the wage for the duration and one month imprisonment of the employer. Commenting on the bill, Linus Okorie (PDP, Ebonyi) wondered whether the National Assembly had powers to legislate on punishment for non-payment or late payment of salaries. For the Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Orker Jev, since there exists a minimum wage Act, the bill could only come in form of an amendment. The newly promoted Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, and the first member of the Green Chamber to be bestowed with such an award, Edward Pwajok, SAN (PDP, Plateau) and Aminu Shehu Shagari (APC, Sokoto) lent their support to that of the Chairman, Rules and Business. After all the necessary observations and comments, the sponsor of the bill, Gbajabiamila, withdrew it. SOURCE: http://www.fullgist.com.ng/2016/07/reps-move-to-criminalise-non-payment-of.html

Russian security researchers have discovered a Trojan for Android that contains malware and spyware features hidden in 104 Android apps on the Google Play store. It has been downloaded over 3.2 million times already onto victims' devices. Researchers at antivirus software firm Dr Web have discovered a nasty malware called Android.Spy.277 which clones apps. These can range from games to instant messaging services, image-editing apps, video players, photo sticker apps, weight loss calorie counters, interactive smartphone wallpaper apps and even instant messaging services. Once downloaded, the apps don't work as they're supposed to. Instead, Android.Spy.277 collects a huge amount of data on the smartphone's owner, including but not limited to: the phone's IMEI code, the user's geographic location, the user's Gmail address, the phone number registered to the smartphone and the user's Google Cloud Messaging ID. Every time the user tries to open one of the clone apps, the malware sends the information gathered to the hackers' command and control (C&C) server, which will then give the app instructions, such as: show the user pop-up ads that appear on the notification bar, or place shortcuts to links onto the user's smartphone home screen. When clicked, these open links to malicious websites on either the smartphone web browser, the Facebook app or even the Google Play Store app itself. The ads also try to convince users that there's something wrong with their smartphone that can only be fixed by downloading yet another malware-laden app, such as telling the user that their phone's battery has been damaged and is overheating. In the case of a user attempting to uninstall one of the clone apps, Android.Spy.277 installs other apps onto the device so that they can take over the spyware and adware function. Researchers have contacted Google about the malware-laden apps. If you discover you have been affected by the malware, download Dr Web Android app which is capable of dealing with the issue, as well as the Android.Locker ransomware, once safe mode is activated. The Dr Web app is free for 14 days, after which it costs €7 [US $8] a year on subscription. But if after the 14 days trial you can't afford to pay to Dr Web app, just read this article on how to deal with a similar malware - GhostPush, and use the same method to deal with this Dr Web malware. This Media Guidance Note has become necessary to ensure that the media capture in proper context the views I am expressing on the possibility of stabilizing the Nigerian Naira (NGN / N) against the US Dollar and other international currencies in the Foreign Exchange Market. This has become necessary since my appearance and feature on Channels TV program Sunday Politics of Sunday, February 21, 2016. This impromptu appearance has led to other similar media engagements often too short to allow me provide detailed, structured and contextual answers. Media men and organizations have inundated me with requests for other engagements on views expressed on the subject matter, which, equally, have continued to attract comments in the conventional and new media. I have herein provided my views on the subject and allied matters for your consideration and use. 1. REINVIGORATING THE ECONOMY AND STABILIZING THE NAIRA AGAINST INTERNATIONAL CURRENCIES In the course of my interactions with Seun Okinbaloye of Channels during Sunday Politics I noted that there were things that we could do to help stabilize, reinvigorate, and redeem the fate of the naira. I stand by those statements. The time was short and I could not fully contextualize my views, which is a product of years of brainstorming and scenarios building. The current economic situation did not happen by accident. The likelihood and probability of it occurring had been “crystal clear to the blind and audible to the deaf”. We need to correct some of the erroneous impressions making the rounds and again change the negative narratives making the rounds concerning the genuine efforts of the President Buhari led government. For example, some opine that the short fall in naira was because of the activities of the Bureau De Change (BDC) operators. Others feel it simply has to do with our consumption pattern, what we import into the country and weak export profile. The truth is that it is inclusive of all of these and more. I have developed, with my team, a deep understanding of the subject matter from a patriotic perspective. I am therefore very serious when I said “Look at the economy, look at the position of the naira today; some of us have ideas on how we can restore this.” When called upon, we shall be willing to share and participate in the concerted efforts. I am not speaking just as a businessperson. We are addressing it with theoretical and empirical processes; introducing measures that will enhance sustainability. The thought-formation is crosscutting, multidisciplinary, and multi stakeholders involving. We are maintaining a safe “theory – research –policy – legal – marketplace practice – patriotism” balance in what we have proposed. 2. METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH (Appreciative Inquiry, Critical and Creative Thinking) The proposed possibility is firmly rooted in our ability to combine the rich elements of Appreciative Inquiry with positive elements of Critical and Creative Thinking. Permit me to stress, again, I am not alone in this matter – “a tree does not make a forest”. I belong to a class of patriotic Nigerians who are committed to brainstorming and thinking out of the box in search of solutions that can help move Nigeria forward. The team I belong to has Nigerians from diverse backgrounds and persuasions often concerned about the fate of Nigerians and keenly desirous of creating the Nigeria of our dreams. What we have done over the years concerning the stabilization of the Nigerian Naira is seek avenues of maintaining a safe “theory – research –policy – legal – marketplace practice – patriotism” balance in what we are proposing. We have taken the pains to interrogate the attendant issues and circumstances within the context of global dynamics and elite conspiracy theses desirous of bringing Nigeria an economic crisis aimed at further pauperizing Nigerians. The choice open to us is simple. As a country, we must unite to confront the forex challenge together because of the negative multiplier effects. We must challenge the cabal behind the current trend, serve the forces of darkness the required ‘quit notice’ and commence the required revolution against them. President Buhari has said “NO TO DEVALUATION OF NAIRA” and we stand by him on this. We shall support the CBN measures aimed at mitigating the forex challenge. For the avoidance of doubt and in response to those who have sought to know what we shall do. It is no ‘voodoo science’. It is a principle we have tagged the “SIR Principle”. Being the acronym for Strategy, Implementation and Results. On Sunday, February 21, 2016, we commenced the first component of our strategic options and methodological approach followed by the boldness of challenging the cabal. The efforts as envisaged by “SIR Principle” is yielding dividends. Since my TV appearance and statement on Sunday night on Channels TV, the Dollar crashed from about N400/$1 to a year-low of N220/$1 before stabilizing at N290-N300/$1 currently. Is this not enough evidence that we can arrest this artificial freefall of the Naira with honesty and ingenuity? Our media appearances constitute another component that will galvanize and mobilize Nigerians for proactive measures, which include shunning, ignoring and rejecting the Dollar until it crashes to N200! We are calling upon Nigerians to demystify our demand for this commodity - THE DOLLAR – and stop patronizing products that drain Nigerian forex reserves. You can now observe that this is not a POLITICAL STUNT, as some quarters would want well-meaning Nigerians to believe. When we intervened concerning the fuel scarcity situation of the country, and I wish to ask, what political gains have I achieved by defying the strike action? My actions are born out of sheer and deep love for country, something I have proven repeatedly despite being highly misunderstood – a perception I pay dearly for sometimes. I may not be Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg but I believe I am the David that will face and defeat Nigeria's Goliath (Naira vs Dollar). 3. STAKING OF ASSETS WORTH OVER N500BILLION The need to clearly draw attention to the fact that what we present is possible informed staking of my over N500billion assets. It is firmly rooted in the realm of the empirical – it is that which is possible. If the country is not willing to listen to the bright minds am working with as individuals or as a collective they should at least listen to me based on what the Bible even noted: “Once I saw what people really think of wisdom, and it made an impression on me. It happened when a powerful ruler surrounded and attacked a small city where only a few people lived. The enemy army was getting ready to break through the city walls. But the city was saved by the wisdom of a poor person who was soon forgotten. (He was only a poor man, after all.) Therefore, I decided that wisdom is better than strength. Yet if you are poor, no one pays any attention to you, no matter how smart you are. Words of wisdom spoken softly make much more sense than the shouts of a ruler to a crowd of fools. Wisdom is more powerful than weapons, yet one mistake can destroy all the good you have done.” Ecclesiastes‬ 9:13-18‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ To God’s glory, I am the arrowhead of the team of patriotic Nigerians brimming with confidence and ideas, which is why I would dare to make such an audacious wager now to save the Nigerian economy and douse the suffering of the masses. It is with the same ingenuity of Appreciative Inquiry, Critical and Creative Thinking that I hinged the conceptualization and building of Capital Oil and Gas Industries Nigeria Limited (one of my companies). A company that until date, contributes above 35% of Nigeria's daily petroleum consumption, is a feat that has remained unparalleled industry wide. This fact is verifiable through NNPC/PPMC and DPR/PPPRA. A simple Google search will validate this or better still through NNPC's twitter handle @NNPCgroup. Achieving this feat, by neither waiver nor any form of grant or concession from the government, means that with God’s help and the interest of suffering masses of Nigeria in focus, then this task which I have said and set my heart to do is possible! We call this “putting your money where your mouth is”. Nigerians should keep the faith with me. How else do we define patriotism? What patriotism or sacrifice could be greater than this? By the grace of God, I have a 75% success rate in all I set out to achieve and I thank God immensely for this gift. 4. WHAT BENEFITS ARE YOU SEEKING? My benefit in this is simply the satisfaction that we can move Nigeria forward... Amnesty International (AI), the global human rights body, has stated that supporters of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) have a right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. The organization also noted that it was still investigating disturbing reports of the massacre of unarmed members of IPOB and their alleged burial in a mass grave in Aba, Abia State, by Nigerian security operatives. The organization also stated that extra-judicial killing remains a major issue in Nigeria, beyond the context of the security operations in the North-East. The organization said it was very concerned about what is happening in the South East of Nigeria - going by reports of harassment and intimidation of unarmed people exercising their basic freedoms of expression and assembly. According to Amnesty, Nigerians must understand and fight for their rights - given the fact that Nigeria is a signatory to the Rome Treaty. The global body expressed these positions at the launch of Amnesty International Annual Report 2015/2016, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, yesterday. Ambassador M.K. Ibrahim, the Country Director of AI, fielded questions from journalists after the report presentation. His words: “We are extremely worried and concerned at what is happening in the South-East because of the treatment of the supports of IPOB with regards to their freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. “While Amnesty does not report or work on issues of self-determination, which are political issues, we are terribly concerned with the steps being taken by the authorities to violate freedom of expression and freedom of assembly of the IPOB. “Amnesty has a standard in conducting these investigations. We have seen pictures, we have heard stories. But before Amnesty International will publish anything we have to verify. We have very rigid verification standard and that is what we are doing right now. “We want whatever we print to stand by it. I can assure you that soon you will see our report on the plight of IPOB in the context of expressing their freedom of expression and right to assembly. “We are concerned with the cases, the stories we are seeing about people being killed while protesting. Let me emphasise again that our verification standard has no short-cut. At the moment we are investigating.” Responding to its position on extra-judicial killings in Nigeria, Amnesty said that, “Ex-judicial killing is a major issue here, beyond the context of the security operations in the North-East. And this is one of the issues that ignited Boko Haram - the extra-judicial killing of Mohammed Yusuf.” On the Nigerian military and rights violations, it stated that, “The military is an honourable institution and should be a respectable organization everywhere in the world. We thought that the Nigerian military should also be in that class. We have nothing against the military as an institution. “But in the conduct of their operations in the North-East – and this fact-finding and research took us two years – we found out unfortunately that there was gross human rights violations by the military. We have gathered a lot of evidence as we have indicated in our report. “We have 90 videos, interviewed over 490 witnesses, victims and doctors. We know from our research, especially using technology, that such violations actually took place. What we are asking is for the government which has an obligation and a duty to protect the life of every Nigerian to look into these complaints. “We have made recommendations and there should be an independent, impartial panel of investigators to look into these human rights violations. The purpose of doing this is to ensure that we stop the preponderance of such violations. The government has promised us that these violations will be investigated.” On the laid-back attitude of Nigerians with regards to regular violations of their rights, Amnesty stated that citizens must wake up and fight for their rights. In Ibrahim’s words: “Nigerians should wake up and fight for their rights. Human rights education is the key here. Nigeria is signatory to the Rome Treaty. If Nigeria is violating its constitution, ultimately it’s for Nigerians to fight for our rights. We have a constitution. “If the constitution says that you should not be detained for more than 24 hours and we see people detained for months, years; it is our duty as Nigerians to say that we are not respecting our constitution. “It is only when we do that that our rights will be respected; will be protected by our government and security agencies.” In its report proper, presented in a summary format, Amnesty noted that: “Protests for an independent state of Biafra took place in the South and South East. On 14 October, Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB and director of Radio Biafra, was arrested and charged with criminal conspiracy, managing and belongin to an unlawful society and intimidation. “On 17 December, the Federal High Court in the capital Abuja ordered his unconditional release from the custody of the Department of State Services. “However, he was not released and charged with treason on 18 December. He remained in detention at the end of the year.” Amnesty’s summary report swept through the March 28, 2015 general elections, conflict between the military and Boko Haram and war crimes on both divides; retirement of all service chiefs appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan by President Muhammadu Buhari, Dasukigate, communal violence, death penalty, housing/women rights, corporate accountability and deficits in criminal justice administration in Nigeria. Ubah’s magic working already as Dollar dips to N305 after his challenge... The Chairman of Capital Oil and Gas Services Limited, Dr Ifeanyi Ubah, on Tuesday staked his N500 billion assets on his proposal to the Federal Government to stem the free fall of the Naira against the Dollar. Ubah said if given the opportunity by the government, he would halt the slide of the national currency and bring it back to N200 to the dollar within one month. The billionaire businessman, who addressed journalists in Abuja, backed President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision against devaluing the Naira, noting that such move would not augur well for the economy. He stated that it was wrong to blame the fall of the Naira on low price of crude oil in the international market, insisting that other major oil exporting countries were not facing similar challenge with their national currency. Ubah said if he failed to fulfil his pledge, government was free to take over his assets. He therefore called on the government to make him its chief consultant on financial stability, stressing that he would work with any government agency or groups including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to achieve his target. Indeed, Ubah’s magic seems to have started working already. The Naira had been trading at N385 to the dollar at the black market in the last few days. However, within 48 hours of Ubah’s challenge to bring the dollar down to N200 within one month, if mandated by the Federal Government, the Dollar dipped significantly yesterday, trading at N305 in some bureau de change outfits within the Federal Capital Territory. “This shows that the scarcity was artificial. The masses, especially traders, are suffering. Some traders are almost packing up their things to go home, because of the high cost of foreign exchange which is crippling their businesses. Those manipulating and benefitting from the foreign exchange racket should be fished out and punished,” Chief Ubah said. He explained that having built the Capital Oil and Gas Services Limited to a position where it now accounts for 34 percent of Nigeria’s daily consumption of petroleum products, through his ingenuity, and without any form of waiver, grant or concession from the government, he was ready to assist the country to stabilize the economy by growing the value of the Naira. According to him, “I want to reiterate my earlier my proposition to the Federal Government about my capacity to bring down the value of the Naira. It is not about who is Ifeanyi Ubah, what can he offer, it is about creative thinking. “Nine years ago I created a structure at 36 years in the downstream of the nation’s oil sector that contributes close to 35 percent of the nation’s oil use. That record has not been broken and one thing the nation lacks is competitive governance as they all rely on Abuja to share money at the end of every month. “There is no more creative thinking, nobody is thinking out of the box. Governors rely on the centre for their sustenance but they must have to develop on their as the centre cannot sustain their needs. “I have four cardinal points that will help in stabilizing the Naira and I am one of the very few people that helped Nigeria and saved the nation on several occasions”. Ubah stressed that since he appeared on Channels TV to make the proposal last Sunday, the Naira has appreciated tremendously, a clear indication “that this freefall of the Naira is artificial and could be better managed with honesty and ingenuity”. “I am saying that I pledge every asset of mine into my proposal, if I fail to bring a dollar to N200 within 30 days, the federal government should seize everything I have. I thank Mr. President for not heeding the advice to devalue the Naira. I thank him and he should remain firm because nothing has changed. “Yes, we have issues with dwindling prize of oil but that is not even it. Other states have it, Dubai have it, and have their money gone beyond 3.65 to the dollar that it has been in the last 20 years? Is there any other magic they are using? Is their foreign reserve depleting? “No, let us be frank, it is all about re-engineering the economic sector of Nigeria, management of Nigerian industries and at the same time, supporting those who really need support, who can contribute towards economic growth of Nigeria than supporting monopoly”, he added.

The Vice Chairman of Environment Fight Against Desert Encroachment, FADE, Ayo Olukanni, has disclosed that a quarter of the global disease burden is caused by environmental factors, with 7 million people dying annually as a result of air pollution. Olukanni who is also a former Ambassador of Nigeria to Australia added that further research also revealed that 500,000 people perish from exposure to chemicals stressing that “these developments are indeed a great cause for concern” even as he seeks synergy between stakeholders particularly the manufacturers and distributors of chemicals and Chemical products and agricultural workers. The ex-envoy spoke yesterday in Ilorin, Kwara State at a symposium organised by the American Chemical Society, ACS, Nigeria International Chemical Sciences Chapter held at the University of Ilorin. According to him, “A look around our homes and visit to our markets show our pervasive, and unfortunately cavalier approach to use of chemicals. Closed chemical factories are spread all over Nigeria; the African Stockpile project identifies Nigeria as one of the countries with the greatest expired abandoned chemicals stockpile consisting of pesticides and agro-chemicals. source: http://authorityngr.com/2016/02/7m-people-die-annually-from-air-pollution--Ex-envoy/

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Monday arrested a former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, over the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment scam in which no fewer than 20 job seekers died. Also arrested by the anti-graft agency were former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Anaesthesia Nwaobia, and a deputy director who allegedly facilitated the scam. A source at the commission told an online news medium that the three suspects were picked up in the evening. “They were brought into the commission’s headquarters today yesterday and will be arraigned on a 12-count charge in the Federal High Court Abuja on Tuesday,” the source said. Some of the charges against Mr. Moro and his colleagues include obtaining by false pretence, procurement offences, corrupt practices and money laundering. At least nine job seekers died on March 15, 2014 at the Abuja National Stadium while scrambling to secure seats for a recruitment test into the Nigerian Immigration Service. The stampede ensued after the over 200,000 job seekers scrambled through a poorly organized barricade at the stadium. In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, four applicants died from the stampede while 12 others sustained injuries and were rushed to Rivers State government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital. After the March 15 tragedy, several Nigerians demanded the resignation or dismissal of Mr. Moro and the Comptroller-General of Immigration, David Parradang, as well as their criminal prosecution for involuntary homicide. source: http://authorityngr.com/2016/02/EFCC-arrests-Abba-Moro-2-others/

At last, Anita, the estranged wife of Chris Oyakhilome, the Founder of Christ Embassy, has called it quit with her marriage. In a press statement to affirm the end of the marriage, Anita through her lawyers, identified herself as Anita Ebhodaghe and not Oyakhilome. She also renounced her membership of the church also known as Believers LoveWorld Inc. Anita, a pioneer member of Christ Embassy, where she rose to become a pastor, got married to Oyakhilome in 1991 and they have two daughters. In the statement, her solicitor: Attwaters Jameson Hill, said the divorce was finalised on February 8 and hinted that she had dropped Oyahkilome from her name while also severing all ties with the church. The statement published on the United Kingdom-based law firm’s website reads: “We have been requested by Anita Oyakhilome to confirm that on Februray 8, 2016 a decree absolute was pronounced in the High Court of Justice Principal Registry of the Family Division dissolving her marriage to Christian Onehirokpeana Oyakhilome. “Anita Oyakhilome would like to confirm that she is no longer involved in or part of Christ Embassy (aka) Believers LoveWorld Inc.” Anita had 2014, filed for a divorce accusing her husband of indulging in illicit affairs with female members of the church. This came to the fore after months of rumours suggesting that all was not well with the marriage. A few months later, their marital crisis got messier as both Anita’s lawyers and Oyakhilome issued statements on their soured relationship. Thereafter, Anita’s images, which were very prominent on the church’s website, were removed with her name and image also missing from the monthly editions of Rhapsody of Realities, the church’s devotional, which she had co-authored with her husband. The Federal Government will not reverse the recent sack of 13 Vice Chancellors (VCs) despite the several protests trailing the decision, Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has said. Adamu, who disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during a chat with newsmen after flagging off the 2015/2016 annual school census exercise, said mere protests would not force government to reverse the decision. He said, "Do you reverse government's decision simply because somebody has protested? I don't think there is government decision that is not everyone decision. "We have gotten some presentations (on the sack) and we are looking at them." Asked on the possible legal tussle that may arise following claims that about five out of the thirteen sacked VCs are yet to serve out their tenures before the unceremonious removal, the minister said the government was fully aware of such concerns. "They have already written to us and we are looking at their complaints," Adamu said. The affected VCs who have not served out their tenures before the sack include Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, Prof. Ben-Chuks Okeke, Federal University,Gusau, Zamfara State and Professor Shehu AbdulRahman, Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State. Others include Professor Isaac Asuzu of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State and Prof. Vincent Tenebe of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). It would be recalled that various condemnations have trailed the sack of the Vice Chancellors, with stakeholders raising concerns on non-consultation with the institutions governing councils, violation of the rule guiding the tenure of VCs as well as the breach of the federal character principle in appointing replacement for the sacked VCs. |
Following complaints from member of the public, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State yesterday reaffirm the ban of Edo State Transport Management Agency (EDSTMA) in bid to sanitize and rid the roads of unwholesome activities of some officials of the Agency. Speaking during an unscheduled visit to the premises of the State Ministry of Transport yesterday, Governor Oshiomhole said EDSTMA has no business in the road as they have been found extorting money from the motorists who were guilty or not guilty of any road offence. Oshiomhole urged the public to report persons in the guise of EDSTMA to the police as they stand banned while a monitoring squad made up of policemen will be set up to arrest those found wanting. He said those wearing the EDSTMA uniform and has an identity card is fake as the government didn’t give any appointment letter to that regard. According to him, “I want to once again publicly announce that these men called EDSTMA have since been disbanded. They have no business on the roads. Henceforth, anybody they harass, the person should report them to the nearest police station. We are going to set up a monitoring squad, made up of policemen, both plain clothes and uniformed policemen to arrest anyone that decides to turn our high way to extortion point. Anyone that harasses motorists in the state will be sent to prison.” He said, “So, I want to again appeal to members of the public not to part with money to anybody. Nobody is authorized to collect one naira from anybody. If taxes are to be paid, taxes are to be paid to the banks, not cash to anybody. All those cash they have been collecting are illegal, and they are going into individual pockets. We want to manage Edo traffic, but not to subject people to untold hardship and dehumanizing tactics. Government cannot use thugs to enforce laws. Laws must be enforced by law enforcement agents. The Governor ordered the immediate release of over sixty vehicles illegally impounded from motorists for allegedly contravening traffic offences in the state capital. source: http://authorityngr.com/2016/02/EDSTMA-stand-banned-Oshiomhole-tell-Edo-people/ |
