mii4u:Alright! This is actually fascinating. The reason Ethiopia’s calendar is 7–8 years behind the Gregorian calendar comes down to how they calculate the birth of Jesus Christ. Here’s the story step by step: 1. Different calculations of Jesus’ birth: The Gregorian calendar (most of the world uses this) was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. It is based on the calculations of a monk named Dionysius Exiguus, who tried to determine the year Jesus was born. Later scholars realized his calculations were a bit off. 2. Ethiopian Church follows its own tradition: Ethiopia uses the Coptic calendar as a base. According to their calculations, Jesus was born 7–8 years later than Dionysius said. That’s why their year count is behind the Gregorian calendar. 3. Calendar structure difference: Ethiopia has 13 months (12 months of 30 days + 1 month of 5 or 6 days). Their New Year is in September, not January. So basically, it’s a different “starting point” for counting years, combined with a slightly different calendar structure.
