slivertongue:Authorities have sworn not to execute the laid down provisions of blasphemy in our communities. The likes of Abdul Inyass and that other Kano boy slipped through the loopholes to evade the provisions of the Islamic law. Look, we are Muslims. Our leaders (Governors and Lawmakers) need to take all sorts of leadership responsibility to chart a law that will befit the Muslim community they lead. The laws should be clear, and meant for execution. Not just some paperwork that will be meant for populism. The courts should be empowered. And the society should be let to know that those laws aren’t jokes. I know non-Muslims and “woke Muslims” will want to remind me how Nigeria is a “secular state”. But the home truth is, that is also only available on paper. It largely helps with natural resource allocation, whose biggest beneficiaries are the Nigerian elites. These elites are united in enjoying the dividends, without recourse to the Arewa-South dichotomy or the Muslim-Christian differentials. But left to the ordinary Arewa Muslim on the streets of Arkilla or Fagge, he does not really care. He would gladly exchange Nigeria’s geographical arrangement of 1914, for his religious belief. To him, poverty isn’t the worst thing that can happen to man, humiliation of his faith is. In this community, absolutely everything is second to faith. It is too sensitive to faith, for the right or wrong reasons, depending on who you are as an assessor. It is not as if mob lynching is primitive Arewa’s monopoly. It happens down South too. For stealing a N1,000 worth of garri in a market, you risk being beaten and set ablaze. It has happened so many times. And if you can try it today in May 2022, you’ll get the same treatment. Because they don’t have tolerance for stealing. Perhaps Arewa chose not to have tolerance for blasphemy. If leaders are serious about containing all these mob actions, then it is not rocket science. Simply make local laws that befit the distinct communities, and unrelentingly enforce those laws impartially. In Arewa, they have already done that many years ago with the establishment of the Shariah law. However, the law hasn’t been strengthened to operate with all the might that will ensure peace and harmony within the society. If you take these laws serious, empower the courts, and practically execute the judgements, everyone will adjust. You save people from all this mob lynching that keeps coming up everyday. But we are not ready for this discussion! We won’t empower the system to checkmate this. We prefer to let it happen in its way. And when it does, we begin to write all sorts of useless English phrases as if these mobs are online to read them. We are good deceivers of ourselves. When we want to talk to almajiris whose parents don’t have phone, we come online. When mobs lynch, we also come online. If you have a problem, find a way to solve it. Queen’s English alone won’t help towards solving that problem. The sooner we demand for a system that will take this job off the mobs hands and put it in the hands of legal authorities, then the better for us. Lest I forget, Islam doesn’t recommend mob actions. Jungle justice. The religion doesn’t encourage anyone to take laws into their hands. This is why it gives much importance to having respect for leadership. Leaders need to take this advantage to shape our society, and correct the behavior. Regardless, May my life and my parents lives be ransomed for you, Ya RasulalLah ♥️ Duk musulmin kwarai, zuciyar sa kan tafarfasa akan janabin Manzon Allah صلى الله عليه وسلّم. ROME WAS NOT DESTROYED IN A DAY - Simon Kolawole Sadiq Daba, the actor, ran into some serious health issues recently. He cried out for financial help to undergo foreign treatment. Pronto, Nigerians reacted overwhelmingly. But wait. I did not hear anybody talk about Daba’s religion or ethnic group. The people who tweeted and retweeted his appeal for help, and those who contributed money, were certainly not from his village. I was so so so so so happy. It confirmed, yet again, my pet theory about Nigeria — that we do not hate each other. We are just victims of the unending political manipulation of ethnic and religious identities for selfish gain. Evidently, ordinary Nigerians have the “Nigerian spirit” in their DNA. Indeed. I have met extremists and chauvinists from across religions and races. I am yet to hear anyone declare that we were not created by the same God. One of the most astonishing things about life, to me, is the fact that although we can choose to be Muslims or Christians, and so on, nobody can choose to be Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, Yoruba or whatever. We just woke up one day to find ourselves as members of one ethnic group or the other. It was not our making. So why should you discriminate against me, and hate me, on the basis of an ethnic identity that is beyond my control? Is it my fault that I was born into a family that was clearly not my choice? Today, I am going a little bit practical on how we can renew our minds. There is a saying that Rome was not built in a day, a proverb originated by the 19th century English playwright, John Heywood, who also gave us immortal expressions such as “out of sight out of mind”, “better late than never”, and “the more the merrier”. He said Rome wasn’t built in a day “but they were laying bricks every hour”. This, in some sense, tells us the value of consistent hard work, perseverance and conscious efforts at construction. If Nigeria is going to change, therefore, we must alienate those who see themselves, first and foremost, as ethno-religious champions. It all starts in the mind. But, pardon me, Rome was not destroyed in a day either. It took ages to build the city but took a much shorter time to destroy it. Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 AD. In three days, they looted, burnt and wrecked the beautiful city. That hastened the collapse of the Roman Empire. Same thing applies here: the destruction of Nigeria by ethnic champions and religious bigots will not happen in one day — it is a gradual, steady process. That is why we the people must guard our hearts jealously before we are recruited into the hate brigade under different guises. Those already recruited can decide to desert straightaway. We need to build, not destroy. My suggestions. To start with, do not participate in the sharing of messages and materials that are clearly intended to preach hate and prejudice. Saying “shared as received” is pure hypocrisy. You can be critical of leadership without attacking or disparaging their religions and ethnic origins. As a matter of principle, I do not share messages that are clearly meant to spread hate. It is a duty I owe my conscience. We all have terrible things to say about other people. If we do not allow love to guard our hearts, we will keep adding fuel to fire. Therefore, before you press the “send” or “forward” button, ask yourself: what is my motive? Unto thyself, be honest. Also, do not feed your children with hate and prejudice. Fill their hearts with edifying things. A senior colleague of mine, a Muslim, married a Christian, who then converted to Islam. He told me he once engaged the services of a cleric to teach his children the Qur’an every Sunday. One day, he overheard the cleric telling the children not to drink from the same cup or eat from the same plate with their aunts, who were living with them, because they were “infidels”. My colleague fired the “afa” on the spot. He remains a devout Muslim, sure, but he saw danger and immediately quenched it. This kind of hate messaging certainly fuelled the mindset that birthed Boko Haram. This is how hate works: it focuses on what divides us rather than what unites us. If there are Qur’anic verses that say Muslims should love and care for Christians, the hate merchants will focus on where Christians are called “infidels”. If there are verses in the Bible that say “love your neighbour as yourself”, the messengers of hate will focus on “what fellowship does light have with darkness?” There is nothing you want to justify with the scriptures that you won’t find. If you truly have love in your heart, you will focus on the verses of love. The God that forbade eating four-footed creatures is the same God that ordered Apostle Peter, in a trance, to kill and eat! To the pure all things are pure. And this is how prejudice works: because Chief Obafami Awolowo did not declare Oduduwa Republic in solidarity with Biafra in 1967, every Yoruba is a traitor — including the one that was born early this morning. Because an Igbo chap was arrested for 419, every Igbo person — dead, living or unborn — is a fraudster. Because Barkin Zuwo struggled with speaking English, every northerner is an illiterate; in fact, no northerner has a brain. Because of the insane activities of ISIS and Boko Haram, every Muslim is a terrorist, including your friend. Tragically, there are people that the only thing they can see in you is your language or religion, not the content of your character. Let me quickly say this before I shut down my laptop and take a stroll: it is very difficult to resist the message of hate and prejudice in a society already polluted by manipulative politicians, their overpaid sidekicks and our inept leaders. I know. When everybody is saying there is casting down, it is very difficult to go against the grain and say there is lifting up. You just go with the flow. But maybe the “casting down” gang is not as big as the “lifting up” brigade — just that the latter has been intimidated into silence. They must begin to speak out. Rome was not destroyed in a day. Those working to destroy Nigeria neither sleep nor slumber. As for me and my house, we resolved long ago that we would never feed our children with hate, prejudices and biases. These things are usually passed on from generation to generation. I resolved to follow the example of my grandmother by celebrating the best in others rather than focusing on their worst. I would rather talk about the dignity in labour you find among the Hausa, the creativity among the Igbo and the industry among the Yoruba. Accuse me of living in denial and I will accuse you of living in bitterness. Accuse me of being politically correct and I will accuse you of being self-righteous. Accuse me of being naïve and I will accuse you of being jaundiced. It’s all in the mind. |
So last night, I was watching Nigerian News. There was an attack in Benue State yesterday. This is how the report reads: “Cattle Rustlers killed two herdsmen & 73 cows in Tarka Local Govt. Area of Benue State”. Watch carefully the report: “ Cattle Rustlers” Not Tiv Cattle Rustlers Not Idoma Cattle Rustlers, but simply “Cattle Rustlers”. Fine ! Now let’s flip the attack the other way and see how the report will read. You hear stuff like: FULANI- Herdsmen attack so so so & so. At this point, the criminals will have ethnic identity. The entire Fulani ethnic group becomes guilty of the crime of less than 1% of its population. There are so many criminal groups in Nigeria cutting across the country, but I have never heard of anything like; Yoruba Badoo cult group Ijaw or Ikerre militants group Igbo fraudsters cult group Or Igala criminal gang etc So why then should an entire ethnic group be identified with the crime of few as in the case of Fulani herdsmen?? This is why over 20 people were killed in Port Harcourt & there was no National Out Cry as much as those killed in Benue even though it happened the same time. Because of what I tag ‘Ethnic Identity to Crime’. This kind of biased ethnic affiliation to crime will only exacerbate ethnic tension & sentiments. It will consume all of us if urgent care is not taken and now. Crime has no ethnic identity. Crime does not speak a particular language. People should be held responsible for their crimes as Nigerians and not by the language they speak or their ethnicity. This is me trying to make common sense! #osquare78 |
A Muslim does not raise an eyebrow when a Christian Evangelist takes to the street and start preaching Jesus is God, He is the son of God etc. A Christian sees no harm in sharing tracts to his/her Muslim neighbours telling them Jesus is their Lord and personal saviour and of course, there’s no harm after all. If a Muslim decides to preach to a Christian neighbour telling him/her that Jesus is a Slave of God and no one is worthy of worship except God, the Christian begins to see the Muslim as a devil, an enemy not receiving the Muslim’s teaching with the same attitude the Muslim received his/her even though the Christian once saw the Muslim’s daughter in Hijab and لا إله إلا الله inscribed On the door still goes ahead to preach to the Muslim. The Christian may begin to pray, “I bind all evil spirit in this vicinity with fire”, “Thunder fire devil”, “Enemy must fail” etc Worthy to note, the Christian and the Muslim preached what is in their book, the Muslim becomes peaceful only if the Christian gets to preach unchallenged or the Muslim keeps quiet as regards his own faith. _____________________ A Christian Evangelist not minding the fact that there are people with different religious beliefs, state of health and mental stability on a commercial bus, he starts to preach even sometimes as far as the journey takes. He begins to say “Anyone who doesn’t accept Jesus shall perish” citing John 3:16 amidst other verses and this he does, with no harm. If a Muslim gets on a commercial bus and seats near a Christian, and say “Bismillah AR-rahmani Ar-raheem”, the Christian may change seat or set a space between him and the Muslim. ________________________ To a Christian, A Muslim is peaceful only when he honours the invite to celebrate Christmas with them to mark the birth of the supposed son of God and also Easter to commemorate the death of Jesus though these negate the Lam yalid, Walam yulad and also Qur’an 4:157-159 in the Muslim’s Qur’an. Once a Muslim refuses, saying it is not part of his faith, he is being hated on while a Muslim has no ill thoughts to a Christian who doesn’t join in observing any of the Muslims’ festival. They laugh outwards, yet they are devil inwards. Seeing Paul of the Bible as a mentor, they can do like a goat to catch a goat to worship the Jesus of the church different from Jesus of the Bible and they employ all acts of maliciousness, Deceptiveness and cunningness being desperate so far more sheep are being brought to church which means an increase in Tithe. Having Sundays and Saturdays to themselves, with no complains from the Muslims, they will cry out their eyes at an attempt to declare Friday a no working day in favour of the Muslims. Worthy to note that, they have this Sunday and Saturday due to the fact that they don’t know when exactly should be their day of worship. Hence while some go to church on Sunday, the seventh day adventists go on Saturday, yet the Statement “go to church on Sunday or Saturday” cannot be found in the Bible. To a Christian, a Muslim girl wearing hijab to school is his/her headache though the mother of his/her supposed Lord and Personal saviour was not reported to have exposed her hair. If a Muslim grows beard, it becomes a problem, though the prophets in the supposed “HOLY BIBLE” were not reported to be clean shaven. Their tolerance starts from where Muslims begin to tolerate them and stops when Muslims do what is theirs not affecting their religious beliefs or everyday life a bit. You will only get to fully know what I mean by “our tolerance define their tolerance” when Muslims decide to start celebrating, World Jesus did not die day, World no son of God day like the Christians celebrate Christmas and easter, the former being Bid’aah and should not be attempted. When announcing the day of Eid-el-kabir is tagged as holiday and gives a religious body(CAN) headache, we might begin to wonder if they are doing God’s service or stomach and bank account service. Special thanks to Christians who understand the meaning of humanity not bigots drunken with the opium of prejudice. May Allah make our feet steadfast in the Islam and guide the unguided. Ameen. |
