SportsBarcelona’s Lionel Messi Becomes First Ever Player To Reach 1,000 Goal by lovesamzy(op): 7:35am On Feb 23, 2020
Lionel Messi has become the first player in football history to register 1,000 goal contributions after netting four in a 5-0 Barcelona rout of Eibar.

The Argentine had been enduring a drought after failing to find the net in four games but he ended that in style, nutmegging a defender before delicately chipping the ball past the goalkeeper after 13 minutes.

He then scored twice more in the first half to take his hat-trick tally in La Liga to 36, two ahead of his rival Cristiano Ronaldo. He added his fourth in the final minutes of the match to seal a sweet win for the Blaugrana.

Even if Messi was having a tough time in front of goal, his performances were still unbelievable, registering eight assists out of his side's last nine La Liga goals before today.

Messi's list of achievements is ridiculous, but becoming the first player to 1,000 goal contributions, that is either scoring or assisting a goal directly, in the history of the game is simply phenomenal.

When you break it down, Barcelona's number 10 has registered 696 goals and assisted 306 times for the Catalan giants and his national side Argentina across his 16-year career.

The frightening thing for the other legendary figures of the game is that the diminutive genius still has at least three or four years before he hangs up his boots and it's likely to be even longer than that.

Messi has won the Ballon d'Or a record six times, with the latest being in 2019 and has guided Barcelona to the top of La Liga, albeit if Real Madrid were to win in their game tonight they would retake the lead.

If there was one small question mark surrounding the Argentine's glittering career it would be that he has failed to win a World Cup or Copa America with his country, but this latest achievement goes to show once more that he is from a different planet.

A Brief Profile of Engr. Musa Wada, PhD, FNIS

Engr. Musa Wada, PhD, FNIS was born on the 17th of May into the family deeply attached to Moslem values. Through his parents but predominantly by self-effort he “discovered” the need and purpose for an exemplary life. He is an individual who has continual growth and transformation at the heart of his strategic decisions and actions and like an athlete, he always looked forward to better his time; his life reflects a relentless drive to keep the flames of self-renewal burning. He is one of Nigeria’s foremost engineers.

Stoic perseverance in the face of adversity as well as unobtrusiveness in situations where others would capitulate are among the guiding principles and indeed the staying power of Engr. Musa Wada. From the onset, Musa Wada knew that success was not going to come easily, and was also convinced that for him to succeed, hard-work must be his watch-word. This was a principle he guarded zealously. And, today, those virtues are speaking loudly for him .

Engr. Musa Wada, as he is popularly known and called, is an indigene of Odu in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State. Born into the family of Alh. Wada, his mother Hajia Awawo hails from Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State. He attended LGEA Primary School, Okura-Olafia and Government Secondary School, Dekina before proceeding to the School of Basic Studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He had his first degree B.Sc in Building from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and his second degree M.Sc in Transport from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University). He has a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Akure and a doctorate degree (PhD) in Environmental Science from the University of Calabar, Nigeria.

A Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Shipping, Engr. Musa Wada is a Member of several professional bodies. They include the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Institute of Building, amongst others. He is an Officer of Igala Kingdom (OIK).

Engr. Musa Wada has been an Engineer all through his life. He has been with the Engineering Division of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and rose to become the Chief Port Engineer, Tin-Can Island Port between 2004 and 2007, where he was in charge of the general monitoring, overseeing and maintenance of the Tin-Can Island Port facilities and equipments. His overwhelming performance, show of trust and display of true patriotism while in Tin-Can Island Port Complex lead to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) management board entrusting him with the responsibility of overseeing the Capital Project of NPA Headquarters with his appointment as a Principal Manager, Capital Project of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Headquarters in Lagos.

Engr. Musa Wada is one of those men who have the tenacity to always do better than their last achievement. This is a very remarkable trait because when one is complacent, true success cannot be achieved. He has the uncommon wisdom to continue growing in the face of challenges and changing circumstances and each victory created the zeal and hunger for further successes.

When the news of his appointment as Port Manager, Calabar Port Complex broke out in January 2013, it did not come to many as a surprise, particularly those in the maritime sector of the Nigerian economy, because providence has its way of rewarding hardwork and doggedness in service which Engr. Musa Wada has severally exhibited all these years in the service of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), show of true patriotism and commitment to the development of the Nigerian state. Between January 2013 and April 2015, Engr. Musa Wada was saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the day to day running of the Calabar Port Complex, ensuring good, proper and timely policies formulation and implementation for effective service delivery to the maritime sector players. This lead to a positive turnaround at the Port Complex within his short period as Port Manager.

With his great achievement and record in Calabar Port Complex, the decision of the NPA Management Board to post him to Onne Port Complex, Portharcourt in April 2015 was an easy one. He was to replicate his administrative and managerial skills while in Calabar Port Complex as Port Manager in Onne Port Complex, before a higher duty call in September, 2015. This is coming just five month into his appointment as Port Manager, Onne Port Complex. His next duty call was his appointment as the Managing Director, Seaview Properties Limited by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) management board. Seaview Properties Limited is a subsidiary of NPA.

These appointments/promotions, and his current appointment as the Managing Director, Seaview Properties Limited, no doubt, are an eloquent testimony to his unflinching hard-work and vivid affirmation to his verifiable commitment to the growth and development of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the maritime sector of the Nigerian economy and the Nigeria state in general.

Engr. Musa Wada’s ideas and innovative contributions have translated to the rapid transformation of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the maritime sector of the Nigerian economy. He has proved that he is a bridge builder and committed to the development of the Nigerian state. He is a very dynamic and energetic person, someone that looks directly into future. He has always projected himself as a visionary leader who is desirous of putting his people on the fast lane of development and progress.

Furthermore, amiable Musa Wada is indeed a man of purpose, vision, strength and character, whose one goal in life is to bring liberation, respect and succor to people he crossed paths with. He has the uncommon wisdom to continue growing in the face of challenges and changing circumstances and each victory created the zeal and hunger for further successes.

Dr. Musa Wada blends personal humility with inspired standards while allowing no room for mediocrity in any form. Always averse to putting on self-importance airs, he abhors undue status. He is forward thinking, stretching himself to the limits on issues that bother on faith, work and posterity while seeking to expand the horizons of knowledge. He is the personification of that leader, who inspires by his abiding passion for excellence in every aspect of life, passion matched only by an intense pathological will to positively impact his society.

Most importantly is the fact that as successful as he has made it in life, his inherent nature of humility, graciousness and kindness has never diminished. Rather, he has used each level of success as an excuse to futher extend his graces.

Engr. Musa Wada is a Member of several Professional and academic bodies in Nigeria and beyond. He has won numerous awards over the years in recognition of his meritorious and excellent performance in his services to the public and private sectors of the Nigerian Economy and in his wonderful and selfless services to the needy populace, the physically challenged and the underserved, where he has touched lives tremendously.

God Almighty has a purpose for his life; it’s no accident that he is from IGALA speaking area. Alhaji Musa Wada is here by God’s choosing. He was born at this time in history to fulfill His purpose for Igala nation and our generation. The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you are, but on how happy others can be because of you. The greatest joy is having the passion and ability to add value to people in a manner that supports their journeys in life. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the expression of joy on people’s faces after assisting them in a venture, and the pride that it was done with no expectation from them.

Dr. Musa Wada is one of the Igala most iconic faces and philanthropist per excellence. In the spirit of a candle loses nothing when it lights another candle, several students have benefited from his educational scholarships to Igala sons and daughters and non-Igalas, where he has sponsored a number of students throughout their undergraduate bachelors degree programs in the Nigerian universities, National Diploma programs in Polytechnics as well as NCE Programs in Colleges of Education across the federation between 2005 and 2018.

Engr. Musa Wada is a ‘consider it done person’ and a sticker for proper etiquette and ethics in both his private and corporate life. He is an astute thinker and articulate leader. In the corporate field, he has assisted several into getting a source of livelihood. Naturally, he is kind-hearted. He is someone you go to for a solution to a problem and you are sure of leaving his presence with a positive look on your face. He is someone to always wish to be with. Despite the foregoing, he hardly compromises his lofty values and always preach against social vices. His frowning at immorality has never been in doubt.

He is by birth an ardent Muslim and a giver to the core. His generousity knows no bound. A friend to many friends and a father to the needy, the fatherless and widows are testifiers to this effect both home and abroad. He is an inducted Member of Igala Icons Nationwide & in Diaspora.

He is well traveled. Engr. Musa Wada is happily married with children. His philosophy of life is “Live and let others live”. In his philosophy, you can never be too successful to remember God, and that you should always treat those who are not in the same level as you with persistent and unprecedented acts of kindness. Being a good person requires that you must tolerate not only those who are good to you, but also those who are unjust towards you.

Suspected kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu Balla, a.k.a Wadume, who has been in the middle of the raging storm between the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police over the murder of three police operatives and two civilians by soldiers in Ibi town, Taraba state has finally opened up and made startling revelations.

Wadume, police
Hamisu Wadume
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Vanguard, Wadume gave a blow by blow account of his encounter with both the police and his Army Captain friend in charge of the 93 Battalion, Wukari who aided his escape after his initial arrest by the police.

Taraba Police killings: Army captain engaged welder to remove police cuffs — Findings(Opens in a new browser tab)

Wadume who expressed shock at the manner the soldiers opened fire on the Police Toyota Hiace Bus that was conveying him to the Taraba Police Command Headquarters in Jalingo said while he also sustained bullet wounds on his right thigh after the shootings, he never asked the army captain to rescue him from the policemen who arrested him.

He also explained that as at the time he crawled out of the bullet ridden bus, which somersaulted three times before landing into the bush, the policemen were still alive but he was surprised to see the soldiers who had pursued them to the check-point raining bullets on the policemen before he was whisked in a red colored car, to the home of the army captain. He added that after his leg chain and handcuffs were cut off by a welder invited by the army captain, he was greeted by a large crowd of residents of Ibi who were standing beside the corpses of the deceased policemen who were all brought to the home of the army captain.

With the sum of N550,000 in his pocket after he was rescued, Wadume said he fled Ibi Town and was hiding in the house of one of his friends, Meito, at Ungwachiki town but 24 hours, later some soldiers trailed him to his friend’s house and wanted to kill him. He therefore jumped out of the window and fled to the river bank, boarded a speed boat into Tunga area of Nassarawa State, where he spent a night before moving to the home of his maternal uncle in Kano State.

My Backgound

My name is Hamisu Balla, alias Wadume, 33 years old and I am from Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State. I am married to four wives and I have four children. I attended Bula Primary school Ibi, but I dropped out from Government Secondary School Ibi at JSS 3. After I dropped out school, I started fishing business at the River Benue that flowed through Ibi Town. This was in 1996 and I did fishing for six years, but in the year 2002, I went into fishpond business. I used to buy fingerlings for N30 per one, nurture them for five months before selling them for N600 and N700. I started small with just two small ponds but I went on to get five more big ponds with 50 by 50 in size and five feet deep.

“I am not a kidnapper, but I have sold arms to several kidnappers. I am a fisher farmer, I own fish ponds, I own a transport business. I am equally a political thug. I went into crime when some politicians came for me, they approached me through one Babangida Musa, who was also into fishing business.

I got N6m from a sitting governor, N13m from APC, defrauded civil servant of N30m,

In June 2018, I deceived a lot of politicians who were vying for political offices that I had spiritual powers to enable them win their elections. I defrauded the governor when he came to Ibi and met the youths in my town. As the leader of the youths, the Governor met me and I promised to work for him and to also consult some Mallams who would pray for his success. The Governor gave me N2million at first and we exchanged telephone numbers. But one week before the election, the governor called me and asked me to come to the Government house and when I got there the governor gave me N4million cash to continue with the prayers. Immediately after the election, the governor called to thank me.

End of the road for suspected burglars(Opens in a new browser tab)

I was also given N13million by the APC to prosecute the 2019 presidential election but I spent only seven million. I also defrauded a civil servant from Ibi of N30million.

I contested the Taraba state house of Assembly under the YDP Ibi Local Government but I pulled out of the election and took my supporters to the PDP.

My initial arrest by the police

I volunteered to follow the policemen when they came to arrest me at Ibi Town while I was drinking tea with some of my friends. They showed me their identity cards indicating that they were from the office of the Inspector General of Police and I volunteered to follow them, because I knew I could settle any problem I’m confronted with. The policemen handcuffed me and leg-chained me while I was inside their vehicle and the Army Captain wasn’t even there when the policemen came to arrest me and I don’t even know who informed him that I had been arrested.

Slain policemen identified themselves

While I was being taken out of Ibi, Town, the policemen passed the first check point which was being maned by some soldiers after they had identified themselves. They also passed the second check point which was maned by some Mobile Policemen. But when they got to the third one where we were attacked, four of the policemen alighted from their bus and they identified themselves to the policemen and exchanged banters. I was shocked when the soldiers came after us and rained bullets on our bus, killing those policemen. I was almost killed in the encounter. I was then taken to the army captain’s house. When I saw the corpses of the policemen and their agents in front of the Captain’s house I became very disturbed and I pretended as if I wanted to urinate and I escaped from the scene.

How I escaped from soldiers who wanted to kill me

I called one Audu who is one of my boys who took me on his bike to Ungwachiki Town in Ibi Local Government and I passed the night in the house of Meito, my friend. But while I was there some soldiers came to Meito’s house and started looking for me and they were armed with guns and machetes and axes, I believed they wanted to kill me.

Nigerian soldier: When will enough be enough?(Opens in a new browser tab)

I don’t know how they got information that I was in that house but I managed to escape through the window and fled to the river bank around 8pm where I boarded a speed boat to Tunga village in Nassarawa State. I spent a night in Nassarawa state before I boarded another commercial bus to Kano State. People couldn’t recognize me because of the Sallah holiday. I had N500,000 with me as I was running from the police and I took the money to my uncle’s house where I went to hide in Kano.

While I was hiding, I instructed one of my bothers in Ibi to go to my house and take away all my rifles. My cousin also brought an idea that I needed some favorable stories to be written about me, so he engaged a PR company who were to link up with journalists to write the stories. I paid N3million for that.

Confession of Wadume’s cousin

I’m Kawu Moahmmed Kasuwa, 30 years old from Ibi Taraba State, I am a civil servant and I work with Ibi Local Government. I am an executive officer at the Admin Department. Wadume is my uncle, he is a younger brother to my mother. I was arrested in Zaria, because I made efforts to get journalists to write a favorable story in support of my uncle Wadume who was being hunted by the police. It wasn’t my idea, but one of my uncles who was residing in Lagos State, Ismalia Jita who called me and said that he wasn’t happy with the bad press my Uncle, Wadume was getting since the incident occurred.

He wanted me to raise some money to give to the reporters so they could come down to Ibi and speak with the natives and get a good story about the incident which will be favorable to Wadume. I asked for N3m and they sent me their company’s account number and I gave it to my brother, Awal who knew how the money was paid to the media out fit. I was arrested in Zaria while the police were looking for my uncle, Wadume. But I took them to my other uncle Awal in Abuja who I thought could help in their search for Wadume.

I’ve always been suspicious of Wadume—Elder brother

My name is Auwal Balla, I’m 38 years old, married with four children, I am commercial motorcycle rider at Alaba Rago Market in Lagos. I am known as Auwal Wawa. Wadume is my younger brother and we were born of the same father and mother. I knew my brother to be a fish farmer, a transporter, political thug and a kidnapper. I never knew that my brother was into kidnapping until the police came looking for him after my brother was rescued from the IRT operatives who were killed by the soldiers he called. When Wadume called and asked me to help him hide all his rifles in his house, I asked him what he was doing with all those rifles and he said he was using them for politics.

Then I called one Uban Delu, my step brother and asked him to go to where Wadume kept his rifles and take them away and hide them in a different place. I came to Abuja because some people suggested that we should get the House of Representatives member representing our area to assist us in this matter and the people who were to lead me to the Honorable member asked me to come to Abuja.

While I was in Abuja, one of my nephews, Kawul called and suggested that we should get some media men to write favorable stories for him that will change people’s perception about him. I sold the idea to my younger brother and he bought it. I then asked Kawu to send me the account number of the company which I forwarded to Wadume and he credited the company with that money.

I was in Abuja when the police came and arrested me and I confessed that I have been in constant communication with my brother since he was rescued from the police and I also knew that he was in my uncle’s house in Kano. I have always been suspicious of my brother because he was spending too much money and since his business was such that couldn’t yield big money but he always told me to relax, that he was a political thug and was making big money from politicians, it was when he was arrested and rescued that I knew that my brother must have been into kidnapping.

Why I harboured Wadume in my house—Uncle

I’m Rayyanu Abdul, 46, from Kano State. I am married to a wife and I have six children. I am a civil servant and I work with Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, Kano. I am Wadume’s uncle, his mother is my elder sister. Wadume told me that he was into fish farming, car sales and cattle rearing but I didn’t know that my nephew was into kidnapping or any other crime.

Commander of IGP Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Yyari with arrested kidnap kingpin, Hamish Wadume
Three days after the killing of the policemen by the soldiers, I heard on radio that the police were looking for a wanted kidnapper, Alhaji Hamisu Balla, Wadume and that was when I knew that it was my younger brother that was in the middle of the storm and I became very shocked. Wadume’s elder brother, Auwal then called me and asked me if I had heard what happened to Wadume and I said yes. Wadume also called me himself and told me he was coming to my house but I asked him to stop at a filling station close to my house where I went to pick him up and took him into my house. When I discovered that Wadume had an injury on his thigh, I brought a doctor who started treating him. Wadume gave me N270,000 to stock the house with enough food stuff and my wife was preparing food for him. He took tea in the morning, ate rice in the afternoon and in the night he would take ‘tuwo’.

In 2017, I was poisoned and Wadume and his brother came to visit me in a rented apartment where I was living with my family. They asked if I had a house and I told them, I only had land on which I had built the foundation and I took Wadume to the site. He saw what I had done and he promised to complete the building for me. Early this year, he came and completed the building and he furnished it for me. The building is a three bedroom apartment. When he came with his injury, I gave him my room and I moved into my wives’ room and he was staying alone in his room. I don’t know if he was praying regularly in his room.

The Manhunt for Wadume

The manhunt by the Police to arrest and bring down Wadume’s kidnapping empire began in March 2019, when it received a petition from one Sheriff Umar of Kirikinua South Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The petitioner stated that his cousin, Usman Mayo, was kidnapped on February 15, 2019, at Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State and his kidnapper demanded the sum of N200 million as ransom for his release. According to the petition, the family of the kidnapped victim negotiated and paid the sum of N85 million first, on March 11, 2019, but the victim was not released.

An additional N15 million was paid on March 16, 2019, making a total sum of N100m paid to the kidnappers yet the kidnappers refused to release their victim as they insisted that that the family must pay the N200 million they demanded.

The family therefore reported to the police and the IRT was drafted to investigate and track down the suspects behind the kidnapping and rescue the victim.

It was gathered that while investigations into the matter commenced, members of the kidnapped victim’s family paid an additional N20m to the kidnappers and the victim was released, but the police discovered during investigations that Wadume had strong links to the kidnappers, who got N120 million as ransom from their victim.

Following confessions by some kidnap suspects in police custody which allegedly implicated Wadume, the police therefore went on his trail and succeeded in arresting him in his home town, Ibi on August 6. He was being driven to Jalingo by the police team when soldiers opened fire on them along Ibi-Wukari Road, killing three police officers and two civilians. The soldiers were said to have received orders from an army captain to kill the policemen.

The aggrieved Nigeria Police in a statement demanded to know why the soldiers killed the policemen even after identifying themselves that they were on official duty. The police equally wondered why the suspected kidnapper who was handcuffed and leg chained by the police was released by the soldiers and allowed to escape. The Army on its part claimed that the soldiers responded to a distress call and that the soldiers mistook the policemen to be kidnappers.

The heat generated by the incident prompted President Muhammed Buhari to set up a probe panel to investigate the incident. The panel was yet to submit its report when the police, on August 19 re-arrested him in Kano.

Mele Kyari was named group general manager of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He will replace Maikanti Baru, the current GMD is retiring, with effect from July 8.

Kyari comes on board as the 19th GMD of the national oil company.

Before his appointment as GMD, he was the group general manager, crude oil marketing division of the NNPC.

Trained Geologist

Born on January 8, 1965, in Maiduguri, Borno state, he attended Government Community Secondary School, Biu between 1977 and 1982.

He graduated from the University of Maiduguri in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology.

He had his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) with the Directorate of Foods, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) between 1987 and 1988 as a well site geologist.

He is not related to Abba Kyari

Although he shares a surname with Abba Kyari, he is not related to the president’s chief of staff.

The new NNPC GMD is of the Kanuri tribe while Abba Kyari is of the Shuwa tribe.

The comrade

Amongst other unionists, Kyari is popularly called ‘Grand Chairman’. Members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) often refer to him as a comrade after he was group chairman of NNPC PENGASSAN.

27 years and counting

He joined the NNPC in 1991 as a processing geophysicist with Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL). In 1998, he was deployed to National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS) and worked as an exploration geophysicist.

PIB advocate

Kyari led various teams in developing the petroleum industry bill (PIB) that redefined the government’s take in production sharing contracts with oil companies.

He was the secretary of the FG inter-agency team that coordinated the creation of the current basis of the fiscal and regulatory framework of the PIB

The bill, which is expected to reform the country’s petroleum industry, has been split into four by the 8th assembly. However, none of the bills has been signed into law.

President Buhari declined assent to the petroleum industry governance bill (PIGB), a section of the bill, for constitutional and legal reasons.

‘Mr Transparency’

He was one of the major people that came up with the NNPC’s commodity trading initiative. This initiative makes it possible for the government to know those who are buying the country’s crude and at what prices, and how much has been made.

He created systems to ensure maximum transparency and accountability of crude oil and gas sales in the industry.

Kyari also led the team that proposed and managed the direct sales and direct purchase (DSDP) arrangement of petroleum products from 2016 till date replacing the crude swap arrangement.

The peacemaker

In 2007, he was appointed to head production sharing contracts management in the crude oil marketing division (COMD).

He helped resolve disputes with international oil companies (IOCs) arising from the various interpretation issues with the PSCs.

He was a member of the team that carried out a review of the 1993 PSC process.

He was a member of the team that reconciled the alleged loss of $48 billion and established the actual status of transactions involving NNPC in 2014.

He led the team that determined the tenure of the Amenam/Kpono carry arrangement.

The Borno-indigene also revised and initiated the process for the redetermination of the applicable fiscal regime for the Addax PSC.

As an acting manager, he ensured the reversion of the tax incentives given to the Akpo PSC.

We explain how Premier League clubs qualify for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and UEFA Europa League (UEL) in 2019/20.

The system
Ordinarily, Premier League teams placed between first and fourth qualify for the group stage of the UCL, the fifth-placed club go into the group stage of the UEL, the FA Cup winners enter the UEL group stage, while the team winning the EFL Cup enter the UEL at the second qualifying round.

The winners of the two European club competitions are given places in the UCL.

This season's situation
A maximum of five Premier League teams are eligible for UCL qualification, but because of the UEL triumph for third-placed Chelsea four English sides will play in the 2019/20 UCL.

The top four teams in the 2018/19 table secured their places in the group stage: Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

Man City have won both the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, but because they already have a place in the UCL, their spot in the UEL second qualifying round goes to seventh-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Sixth-placed Manchester United will enter the UEL in the group stage.

The UCL final between Liverpool and Spurs will not affect how places are allocated in 2019/20 as both clubs have secured a return to the competition through their league positions.

After finishing fifth, Arsenal start next season in the UEL group stage.

The Gunners would have become the fifth Premier League club to secure a group stage place in the UCL, but defeat means they missed the opportunity.

The match preview between Chelsea and Arsenal.

The first all-English Europa League (EL)/UEFA Cup final since 1971/72 will see a London derby between A cryrsenal and Chelsea in Baku, Azerbaijan – a city that will necessitate a 9,000 km round trip for rivals based just 10 km apart.
Chelsea, winners of the EL in 2012/13, head into the final with just one loss in 12 competitive games (W7, D4, L1), including a penalty shootout win over Frankfurt in the semi-final of this competition. That success marked 14 EL games unbeaten this term and 17 overall – a competition record. Yet no side has ever won the EL without losing a game.
None of Chelsea’s EL games this season (W11, D3) saw them losing at half-time, while eight of them produced a clean sheet for the ‘Blues’.
Needing to win to claim a Champions League place, Arsenal’s home and away wins in the EL semi-final over Valencia – after going a goal down in each - form part of four unbeaten competitive games (W3, D1), three of which saw them win with a -1 handicap.
Arsenal have kept just six clean sheets in 27 competitive games away from the Emirates Stadium this season, but four of those did come in the EL - part of nine in total for them in this competition this term.
The ‘Gunners’ have never won a European match versus another English club (D2, L4), including one loss to Chelsea, but can boast a superior H2H record versus the Blues in the last eight competitive meetings (W4, D3, L1).
Players to watch: Eden Hazard (CHE) hasn’t scored in ten European club competition appearances - but his last goal came against Qarabag in Baku!
Arsenal have lost just two of the 22 competitive games that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in this season.
Stat attack: Chelsea have only been behind at half-time in six of their 62 competitive games this season, but all six occasions saw them go on to lose the game.
Only four of Arsenal’s 14 EL games this season saw a level half-time score.
Arsenal’s Unai Emery is the EL’s most successful coach with three titles (all with Sevilla).
