The Football Association is moving to close the net on players suspected of cheating amid the latest diving controversy in the Premiership. Suspicion over Cristiano Ronaldo's degree of intent in winning a penalty for Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday has reopened the debate.

Currently, however, it is only academic. The FA could not charge Ronaldo even if it wanted to - and yesterday sources at Soho Square studiously avoided offering a hypothetical judgment. But disciplinary chiefs do want to be in a position where they can consider whether such incidents warrant a retrospective action.

They are planning to lobby for wider use of video evidence at a gathering next month of the International Football Association Board. The meeting in Manchester on March 3 is a platform for the FA to express its belief that charges should be allowed whether referees "see" offences or not. Currently, there is no scope for retrospective punishment if referees make an on-the-spot judgment, as Mark Clattenburg did at White Hart Lane. Manchester United went on to win 4-0 after the award of a penalty that involved little or no contact from Steed Malbranque, who appeared to pull out of a challenge as Ronaldo went to ground.

But it is questionable whether Ronaldo would have been held to account. If he was guilty of deception then it was too clever even for conclusive analysis of slow-motion replays.

One former referee, Kevin Lynch, said: "I'd give both Ronaldo and the referee the benefit of the doubt. It was a difficult call as to whether there was a dive or not."

The Premier League may contact Tottenham after a replay of the controversial incident involving Ronaldo and Malbranque was shown at White Hart Lane during the interval of their defeat to United. Fans jeered during the break when a replay was shown, although Premier League rules state that replays of controversial moments must be avoided.[/b]

Chelsea's efforts to raise their profile in the Far East were dealt a blow yesterday when they were forced to deny claims made by the Chinese Olympic team - five days into a two-week stay with the Premiership champions - that players have been unhappy with the facilities provided at the club's £20m training complex in Cobham.
Under the headline "Chelsea is not as good as we thought" on the website of the Chinese sports daily Titan yesterday, several players are reported to have complained about being unable to train regularly on the same field used by Chelsea and at being denied showers because they were used by female players and students from King's College, London, who share use of the site.

"The situation is that the food and lodging is good but the training field is not so good," a player from the under-23 team, Zhou Haibin, was quoted to have said. The sports daily also chided Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, after he claimed "we have everything to share" when the Chinese arrived on February 1.
In a statement released on the Chelsea website yesterday evening Guo Bingyan, the Olympic team's assistant manager and media officer, tried to gloss over the claims. "We are so impressed by the great pitches and facilities provided to us in Cobham training centre," he said. "Everyone of the team is satisfied with the training life here in Cobham and would thank again everyone who has made efforts in turning this into reality."

A Chelsea spokesperson attacked Titan's story, saying: "As the statement says, the Chinese Football Association are more than happy with the facilities available. I wouldn't give the earlier claims any credence." The Chinese played a Chelsea XI in a friendly last night, face Queens Park Rangers tomorrow and then Brentford next Tuesday before returning home.[/b]
