Religion / Twitter Ban: Deeper Life Tweets From Across The World, Says Kumuyi by Luckydubby7(m): 7:35pm On Jun 07, 2021
The Founder and General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry Worldwide, Pastor William Kumuyi, says the church has branches across 100 countries and five continents hence it can tweet from anywhere in the world.

Kumuyi said this on Twitter while reacting to the suspension of the social media platform by the Federal Government and a threat by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, that Nigerians still using Twitter would be prosecuted.

However, Kumuyi said Deeper Life has branches across the world and could thus tweet from anywhere.

He tweeted, “In view of the Twitter ban in Nigeria, please note that the content shared on this handle is targeted at a global audience in more than five continents and over 100 nations and we share the content from any of these locations.”

Kumuyi’s tweet came barely hours after the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, defied the Federal Government’s order directing Nigerians to stop using Twitter.

Adeboye, who commands a huge following in Nigeria, said his church is present across the world and tweeting is in accordance with Article 19 of the United Nations universal declaration of human rights.

The tweet read, “The Redeemed Christian Church of God is domiciled in more than 170 nations and territories. The tweets here are in accordance with Article 19 of the United Nations universal declaration of human rights.”

The Federal Government had last Friday suspended Twitter barely two days after the social media platform deleted a tweet by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), which many Nigerians believed was repugnant.

The Buhari regime has come under fire from several rights groups across the world for stifling free speech.
Despite the ban, however, many Nigerians have been using Virtual Private Networks to access Twitter.

The British, American and Canadian governments as well as the European Union have jointly condemned the suspension of Twitter.

Politics / Twitter Pushes Back On Fed Govt Ban by Luckydubby7(m): 11:11am On Jun 05, 2021
Micro blogging social platform, Twitter, has pushed back on ban by the Federal Government.

It described it as brazen affront on citizens fundamental human rights and advised its users and other social media platforms in the country to download virtual private networks (VPNs) to enable them continue to use the platforms for their economic survival and social and political engagements while the “push back on this draconian order by the Nigerian government.”

In a statement, Twitter said: “Today, the 4th of June 2021, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced its suspension of Twitter operations, that the application can be used as a platform for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

“Many Nigerians read the announcement of the ban on Twitter as a reflection of the importance of the platform and other digital (social media) platforms to Nigerians in accessing information and disseminating the same.

“The directive by the Nigerian government is at its core, an abuse of the rights of Nigerians not just to freedom of expression, but many other rights guaranteed in the Nigerian 1999 Constitution (as amended), the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This suspension, which is a reaction of the Nigerian government to the company’s enforcement of its platform rules, is aimed at insulating the government from criticism, especially by Nigeria’s youth who are over 70% of the country’s population.

“It must be noted that Nigeria’s President has notably been insulated from every form of public accountability. He is perhaps the only president since the country’s return to democracy in 1999 who never grants live interviews or holds media chats. This move is therefore aimed at making him unaccountable to the people of Nigeria who constantly take to social media platforms to share their views on the actions and policies of the government.

“It is evident that shutting down Twitter is illegal and illegitimate policies such as this are unacceptable!

“A 2016 United Nations resolution affirms that the rights that citizens have offline must apply online. Coincidentally, this resolution was co-sponsored by Nigeria with others. We urge the Nigerian authorities to respect and enforce citizens’ fundamental rights as provided for by the Nigerian constitution and International human rights treaties that Nigeria is a party to.

We will further contact the Ministry of Information to get exact details of this announcement, and the legal framework that supports such undemocratic pronouncement.

“We advise all users of twitter and other social media platforms in Nigeria to download virtual private networks (VPNs) to enable them continue to use the platforms for their economic survival and social and political engagements while we all push back on this draconian order by the Nigerian government.”

The Federal government may have ignited a social media war it may not be able to to prosecute or win, with the suspension of Twitter for deleting President Buhari’s twit for what Twitter considered as offensive.

Shortly after announcing Twitter operation in Nigeria, Facebook joined Twitter in banning President Buharo’s civil war controversial message on its platform, saying that it violates its standards and capable if inciting violence.

With this action, President Buhari’s entire message had been removed from facebook following the ban on Twitter on Friday by the federal government.

” In line with our global policies, we have removed a post from Presidenr Buhari’s facebook page for violating our community standards against inciting violence.

“We remove any content from individual or organisation that violates our policies on facebook,” facebook said.

Recall that President Buhari had made a post against the South East region of Nigeria via his official Facebook page early in the week when INEC management led by its chairman, submitted a report on attacks on its facilities across the country.

Politics / Hunger, Diseases Dominate North-west, Zamfara In Crisis, MSF Raises The Alarm by Luckydubby7(m): 5:41am On Jun 04, 2021
An international medical organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), on Thursday painted a gloomy picture of the humanitarian crisis in the North-West, saying the area was dominated by hunger and diseases.

The MSF stated this in a statement issued from a hospital it supported in Anka, Zamfara State.

The group’s Head of Mission in Nigeria, Froukje Pelsma, according to the statement, said, “The lives of people in North-West Nigeria are now dominated by hunger, abuse and preventable diseases.

“What is happening here is a humanitarian emergency that needs urgent attention and a proper response. The authorities and all relevant stakeholders should assume their responsibilities towards affected communities.”

The MSF’s Dr Godwin Emudanohwo, stated that the crisis in Zamfara State was more pathetic.

He stated, “Our teams in Zamfara State have witnessed an alarming rise in preventable illnesses associated with a lack of food, drinking water, shelter and vaccinations.

“Children keep on arriving here (in the hospital) in a very bad condition. In the first four months of 2021, our teams in Anka, Zurmi and Shinkafi treated 10,300 children for severe acute malnutrition, measles, malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory infections. This is 54 per cent higher than last year.”

The group, therefore, called for an urgent humanitarian response for people in the region who were desperately short of food, drinking water, shelter, protection and basic services, including healthcare.

It stated that what began as occasional clashes between farmers and herders competing over increasingly scarce land and water resources had evolved into violence by armed groups, who used kidnapping and plundering as a lucrative source of income.

According to MSF teams, people who make it to MSF health facilities usually say that the surge in violence has driven them to flee their homes, farms and grazing lands

They said some had sought protection in Zamfara’s larger towns, such as Anka, where they were sheltering in camps, both formal and informal.

The MSF teams also described the living conditions in the camps as dire, with no regular food distributions or proper shelter, and with insufficient water and sanitation facilities.

According to them, other people have stayed in villages, too afraid to travel on insecure roads and delaying their trips to seek healthcare or fulfil other basic needs.

According to the group, a woman identified as Halima, stated, “There’s hardly any food to give my children.”

The MSF said Halima’s two children were being treated for severe acute malnutrition by the MSF in Anka hospital.

The woman stated, “We can no longer grow crops because criminals attack our farms. Two of my children got measles and were growing very thin. The roads are very dangerous but I had to risk our lives and bring them to the hospital. The last time their elder sister got measles, I decided it was too late to travel by road and bring her to the hospital. She had complications and now she is blind.”

The MSF disclosed that in February 2021, there were more than 124,000 displaced people living in Zamfara State, according to the International Organisation for Migration, which is an increase of more than 12,000 since August 2020.

In Anka town alone, MSF said its teams had counted more than 14,000 displaced people, with around 1,599 arrivals in the past four months.

“We had to flee our grazing lands and most of our cattle were stolen,” said Nana, who was sheltering in a camp for displaced people on the edge of Anka. “Now there’s very little for us to eat. I make a living by selling cows’ milk to local people.”

The MSF’s Emudanohwo stated, “The 150 beds in MSF’s paediatric ward in Anka hospital are already full, but staff fear the worst has yet to come. We are currently running out of bed capacity in Anka hospital.

“Families tell us they won’t be able to farm for the new season, which means a new cycle of hunger. And the rainy season is yet to start, when malaria and other seasonal diseases increase. People here need food, safe water and vaccinations.”

The group added that reports of kidnappings, killings, armed robbery and sexual violence had multiplied.

“From January to April, our teams in Zamfara have received over 100 survivors of sexual violence,” said MSF’s Dr Noble Nma, medical activity manager in Shinkafi, where the MSF runs a clinic for survivors of sexual violence.

Nma stated, “Women and sometimes men are abducted by armed men and subjected to violation for a few weeks before being returned to their community. This is in addition to the violence faced by women within the community itself.”

He said there was fear of travelling along dangerous roads as rape survivors often sought support when it was late.

He stated, “The survivors are afraid to take the roads, so they usually arrive at our clinics too late to prevent sexually transmitted infections and serious mental trauma.

“They tell us that there are more survivors out there who are afraid to travel here, so we fear that we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg.”

MSF Head of Mission in Nigeria, Pelsma, said, “What is happening here is a humanitarian emergency that needs urgent attention and a proper response. The authorities and all relevant stakeholders should assume their responsibilities towards affected communities.”

In his reaction, the Special Adviser Media to the Zamfara State Governor on Media, Alhaji Zailani Baffa, stated, “The crisis in the North-West is not new to the World. Every quarter keeps the zeal in breaking news of killings and abductions without commensurate response in bringing real help, practical support to the affected people.

“The Federal Government has created the North-East Commission due to ravaging problem of Boko Haram. But Zamfara State receives no single Kobo in support of the humanitarian crisis created by the menace of banditry.

“However, within its meager resources, the state government under Dr Bello Mohammed created the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs and has been rendering all possible supports to victims of banditry in the state through medical and food supplies to the affected areas.”

In Katsina State, Governor Aminu Masari’s Special Adviser on security, Ahmad Ibrahim, said the state government was doing everything to ensure that the state was safe.

He said, “ Please, I cut short a call to answer your call. But all I can tell you is that the state government is working in collaboration with security agencies to ensure safety of lives and property.”
