Education / Oxford Dictionary Adds Twerk, Carnap, FLOTUS To English Lexicon by ludamix(m): 1:25pm On Jun 27, 2015
THE Oxford English Dictionary on Thursday June 25, 2015 added twerk, carnap, FLOTUS and scores of other new entries, including many introduced from Asia and
from online slang, to its latest edition.
OED Editor, Danica Salazar, said in
London that the word twerk, a
dance popularised by music stars
and Internet memes, actually dated
back about 200 years.
The Oxford English Dictionary on
Thursday added twerk, carnap,
FLOTUS and scores of other new
entries, including many introduced
from Asia and from online slang, to
its latest edition.
OED Editor, Danica Salazar, said in
London that the word twerk, a
dance popularised by music stars
and Internet memes, actually dated
back about 200 years as a
combination of twist and jerk first
spelled as “twirk”.
Salazar said the use of twerk to
describe a type of dance, which
emphasises the performer’s
posterior, has its roots in the early
1990s in the New Orleans ‘bounce’
music scene.
Salazar said the word itself seems to
originate from more than 170 years
before that.
He said: “Joining twerk in the
updated online OED is the acronym
FLOTUS, or First Lady of the US.
“A term that the First Lady,
Michelle Obama, felt obliged to
explain to London schoolgirls last
week when she mentioned her
FLOTUS Twitter handle.”
The editor said Philippine word,
carnap, meaning to kidnap or steal a
car, originated in the mid-20th
century in the US, but was no
longer used there.
He said another word from the
Philippines was presidentiable, “a
person who is a likely or confirmed
candidate for president”.
Salazar said throughout the years,
Filipino English speakers have been
adapting the vocabulary of this once
foreign tongue, using it to express
their own identity and way of life.
He said: “Many additions refer to
“specific elements of Philippine
culture, such as greetings and terms
of address.
“The boundless optimism of
Filipinos and their unshakeable
belief that things will work out in
their favour in the end is reflected in
the phrase bahala na.”
Salazar said several other new
entries are from South Asia and
South East Asia, where several
hundred million people use English
as a first or second language.
Katherine Martin, the OED’s Head
of US dictionaries, said the term
“Batchmate”, a member of the same
graduation class as another, was
used in both Philippine and South
Asian English.
Martin noted that among the latest
words popularised via the internet
are crowd funding, Internaut,
webisode and photobomb.
Martin said some words and
phrases are so well used that their
inclusion in the list of new entries
was perhaps surprising.
She identified them as dartboard,
tan line, young gun, South Korean, North Korean, Special Olympics and self-immolate.

That is it about stars. They let fame get to their head and become addicted to evil things like smoking, drinking, sex, gambling etc. I just pray Majeck get rehabilitated
Celebrities / Reggae King, Majek Fashek Spotted In Lagos Begging For #100 by ludamix(m): 9:11am On Jun 14, 2015
He was once the best-known reggae artist in
Nigeria, His song "Send Down The Rain" was
a hit, and he won six US-based PMAN Music
Awards. and he got signed to Interscope
Records.
.... But Now all's Changed..
A blogger, A A wrote this article after A him.
On my way to work this morning, I
spotted a loony figure. Pants sagged,
dirty black underwear showing, a caftan
perched precariously on his extra lean
shoulders, shock of long unkempt
dreadlocks cascading down his head and
teeth A by years of hard living and a face
still surprisingly handsome despite the
ravages of illicit living.
AThis A Majek, my hero, the one who
brought down the rain. He it was who
redefined Reggae and in that one album
forced us to look deep into our
consciousness, calling us prisoners of
conscience. He it was who took that Bob
Marley piece, Redemption Song into the
sublime. He infused it with his pangolo
rhythm and turned it into an anthem of
social and spiritual awakening. Majek
was a god, strong Adonis like looks,
talent yet to me replicated in our clime
and charisma of the gods.
This same Majek, I just saw like that in
Fadeyi, begging for ogogoro becuase he
did not have 100 Naira to pay for it. I
stopped brought out 1,000 Naira and
was immediately struck by confusion.
Should I give him this money and
contribute to his death or should I refuse
him and watch him throw a tantrum like
a disposed toddler. He saved me the
dilemma as he grabbed the money from
me and rushed to the ugly, black dirty
merchant of death, who gleefully poured
him a glass full.
Majek downed the drink and hugged me
like I had just saved him from the hang
mans noose. I looked deep into his eyes
and saw a lost soul. He was actually
begging for help, the demon inside of
him peered at me from his once very
beautiful eyes, daring me to do my
worse. Assuring me that he had no
intention of leaving this host until it
finished it's dreadful task of killing him
ever so slowly.
He called me a fine boy and wished he
was as good looking as I was, I laughed.
A laugh that was more of pity, a laugh
that was laced with internal cry of pain.
A pain that cascaded through every pain
in my body. If only I had one tenth of
this talent, I would be far from fadeyi
begging for N100 worth of ogogoro.
Did we fail him as Nigerians, did we put
an umbrella over the Rainmaker, did the
flood of his talent wash away his life,
what can be done, do we continue watch
him make a mockery of a Life once
blessed?
Majek in his destitution represents
Nigeria. Blessed with more than enough
resources., rich in human capacity, more
fertile land than the whole of Asia and
filled with gifted and talented people,
but yet beggerly and poor. Daily our
leaders go to 'jibowu' to beg poorer
countries for aid, for debt forgiveness.
The contradiction never leaves me.
Japan with no known Natural
resources is so developed that we can
only look in shame.
Majek with all the talents of a thousand
people, begging the woman who can't
lift a finger beside him for N100, Majek
being laughed at by miscreants and
being mocked with so much joy by those
who were not half as blessed by God.
What can I do, but to write this piece and
just walk away, lest his guest demon
attempt a move on my life. I saw it and
felt it look into my soul and with one
withered hand, offered me a shot of the
Devils brew. A shot I knew would throw
me into the darkest pits of Majeks
torture, a shot that will take me
spiraling down the tunnels of oblivion,
destroying the innocent dependent lives
of my children while giving Majek solace
that he has finally found a room mate
albeit a very reluctant and scared one.
I pray for you sir. I pray God gives you
peace.
God bless you Majek.

Politics / Ministry Of Finance Release Federal Allocation Figures by ludamix(m): 1:19pm On Jun 12, 2015
As released by the Federal Ministry of
Finance, the total allocation to all the
South-West states, namely, Lagos, Osun,
Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun for January this
year and shared in February was N15.1
billion, while Akwa Ibom State alone with a
population less than 3 million people got
N13.9 billion!”. “For the same period.
Bayelsa State, at arguably 2 million people,
got N10 billion and Rivers State got N10.3
billion. Between Kano and Jigawa states,
which used to be one state like Lagos
State, they got N7 billion. Lagos State only
got N3.4 billion.
“If you remove Ekiti State with the lowest
allocation of just N2.3 billion, Akwa Ibom
State alone gets more allocation than the
rest of the South-West states put together
including Lagos. And guess what?
Hundreds of thousands of Akwa Ibom
State citizens are in Lagos State enjoying
the state’s free education”. “If you multiply
the total allocation to the South-West
states at N15 billion per month by 12, you
have N180 billion per year! This is less
than 30% of what the FG make from the
Lagos Seaports alone, don’t even talk
about VAT that Lagos contributes over
60% of the total accrual to the FG.
“Yet some morons will tell me we live on
Niger Delta oil.”
“Now, my State Governor can’t pay his
workers because of this systemic injustice.
It is either we start the implementation of
regional based fiscal federalism now or we
should go our different ways.”
“What nonsense!” – Ayo Turton.

Car Talk / Man Bought New Car With £70,000 In COINS by ludamix(m): 1:29pm On Jun 11, 2015
Shocked sales staff hadn't realised that
when buyer Mr Gan said he wanted to pay
in cash - he actually meant coins.
The gas station worker paid 680,000 yuan –including 660,000 coins or around £70,000 – to a dealership in Liaoning province, east China to buy an imported Toyota Land Cruiser.
It took 10 staff members hours to unload
1,320 rolls of coins weighing an incredible
four tonnes from the back of the lorry.
It is not yet known how long it took workers to count them all up.
Local banks said that the car dealership
would have to make special arrangements
for the money to be processed.
To add insult to injury – there is likely to be
a handling charge.
The photographs have gained widespread attention online. On Chinese social media, one user wrote: "'If you didn't say it was coins I would have thought it was ammunition!" Juan Mao, a visitor to the showroom, said she was meant by a most bizarre sight. "To be honest, I could not believe what was going on.
"Great piles of wrapped money was being
taken by hand into the dealership. The staff were bringing it in in relays and it was
taking ages.
"I've heard of paying cash to get a discount
but this was taking it a bit far."

Health / Ebola Found In Man’s Eye Months After It Left Blood by ludamix(m): 12:52pm On May 08, 2015
The Ebola virus has been detected for the first time in an eye of a patient months after it vanished from his blood, researchers said Thursday.
Dr. Ian Crozier, an American doctor, was diagnosed with Ebola in September 2014 while working in Sierra Leone with the World Health Organization.
He was sent back to the United States to Emory University Hospital’s special Ebola unit in Atlanta, Georgia.
Crozier left the hospital in October when Ebola was no longer detected in his blood, the New England Journal of Medicine reported Thursday.
But two months later he developed an inflammation and very high blood pressure in his left eye. It caused swelling and serious vision problems.
He returned to the same hospital where he had been treated, and an ophthalmologist, Dr. Steven Yeh, removed some of the fluid and tested it for Ebola. It did in fact contain the virus, but it was not present in his tears or the tissue around his eye.
Doctors believed he did not pose a risk of infecting other people, but Yeh said the case shows that survivors of the deadly virus should be monitored for possible eye infection. It is not known how long this condition can last.
The infection caused an inflammation of the inside of his eye.
Besides the problems with his vision, his iris changed color, going from blue to green 10 days after the symptoms were first detected.
After undergoing treatment with a variety of medicines, Crozier began to recover his vision but it is still not complete. And his eye color returned to normal.
The worst ever outbreak of Ebola began in southern Guinea in December 2013 before spreading to Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The death toll now exceeds 11,000, the World Health Organization reported this week.
Cases of eye inflammation had been reported among survivors of Ebola in previous, limited epidemics and among people with a virus known as Marburg, which is similar to Ebola. But such cases are rare, the medical journal said.
In the current epidemic, some cases of people with eye trouble have been reported among survivors of Ebola.
Dr. John Fankhausser, chief of medicine at ELWA Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia, said chronic pain, headaches and eye trouble were the problems most often cited by 100-odd survivors who attended a meeting at that hospital.
Around 40 percent suffered pain and inflammation in the eyes, he told The New York Times.
But the proportion of survivors who suffer these problems is still not known, the medical journal said.
It has already been established that the Ebola virus can persist in semen for several months after a patient is declared healthy.

Crime / Nigerians To Face Firing Squad In Indonesia Are Mostly Igbos by ludamix(m): 5:01am On May 08, 2015
The eight more Nigerians who are reportedly waiting to be executed in Indonesia are mostly Igbos from South-Eastern part of the country. The names of convicts waiting to be executed as Michael Titus Igwe, Kingsley Okonkwo, Uchenna Onyewuru, Eugene Ape, Humphery Ejike, Obinna Nwajiagu, Benjamin Onuoha and Ikenna Abanukwu.
Chairman of the United Nigerians in Diaspora group, Mr Pascal Okolie while briefing newsmen, said Nigerians should rally round with other world leaders to stop the expected executions.
“Considering that the next batch of execution will take place in no distant time in Indonesia, we urge the good people of Nigeria and our government to rise up with the entire world to stop further executions of Nigerians. Enough of the killings. Nigeria should leverage on the strong bilateral relationship it has with Indonesia and negotiate to stop the execution of the eight waiting to be killed.
In as much as we totally condemn drug trafficking and wish to sensitize intending traffickers on the consequences that awaits offenders, we also condemn capital punishment especially since it has not been able to quell the issue of drug trafficking in Indonesia.”
“Most times Nigerians are thrown into prisons for more than four months without anyone knowing about it. They are tortured and some even die in the process. The way a country treats her citizens, is a reflection of how the citizens will be treated in foreign lands. Therefore, we feel it is high time our government rose to the occasion to ameliorate the plight of its citizens. We expected our government to show concern just like other countries whose nationals were involved.
The way a government treats its citizens, is a reflection of how the citizens are likely to be treated in foreign lands. Therefore, we feel it is high time our government rose to the occasion to ameliorate the plights of its citizens no matter the circumstance.
We use this opportunity to appeal to the youth, to beware of the kind of friendships they keep as well as activities they engage themselves. One of the reasons there are many young Nigerians in prisons in different countries of the world today, is due to get rich quick syndrome, fast track. But in the end, they lose everything including their lives.”he said

Health / 7 Simple Steps To Prevent Cancer [must Read] by ludamix(m): 4:34am On May 07, 2015
Half of us will be given a devastating diagnosis of cancer at some point in our lives. But despite the gloomy predictions, there are many simple steps we can adopt to reduce our risk!
A new guide, compiled by the World Cancer Research Fund, sets out the everyday changes that could dramatically help stave off the disease. Here is a selection of the team’s recommendations, from the types of snack you eat, to swapping salt for spices.
Scrub the house
Even something as mundane as housework can help prevent cancer. Research shows being regularly active or doing exercise has a direct role in preventing some cancers such as bowel and bre*$t. Scientists are still investigating exactly how physical activity reduces cancer risk, but studies show regular activity can help keep hormone levels healthy

Munch on carrots
There’s nothing wrong with having a snack – just as long as it’s the right type. Eating just 100 calories more than you need every day can lead to a weight gain of kg a year. And being overweight or obese is linked to 10 cancers, including bowel, bre*$t, and liver. You don’t need to cut out the snacks though – just swap them for healthy, low calorie ones.

Ditch white bread
Swap white bread, pasta, or rice for wholegrain varieties to up your fibre intake. Fibre helps us feel fuller for longer, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of weight-related cancers. It also helps food to move more quickly through the digestive system and reduces the risk of bowel cancer. A medium slice of wholemeal bread contains around 2.5g compared to just 1g in white bread.

Swap salt for spices
Eating too much salt can increase your blood pressure, but also increases the risk of stomach cancer. Scientists believe this may be because salt damages the lining of the stomach. Gradually reduce, then cut out, the salt you add to your food. Instead, use spices, herbs, garlic and lemon to flavour your food without relying on salt. Black pepper, chilli powder, ginger and herbs such as basil and bay leaves all add flavour to food quickly and easily.

Go veggie one day a week
There is strong evidence that eating a lot of red meat increases the risk of bowel cancer. One possible reason for this is that the compound that gives red meat its colour, haem, may damage the lining of the bowel. There is also strong evidence that processed meats (e.g. bacon, ham) are a cause of bowel cancer. One way to cut down is by having one meat-free day a week – try being vegetarian for the day, or opt for fish.

Always stand up while chatting on the phone
Just 30 minutes a day of physical activity could really help cut your cancer risk. Not only does it help us stay in shape – reducing the risk of weight-related cancers – it can also strengthen the immune system and help keep the digestive system healthy. Even little things like walking while chatting on the phone, using the stairs instead of the lift, or parking the car a little bit further away from the shops. The more you do, the lower your cancer risk becomes.

General Muhammadu Buhari at his first press conference as Nigeria's head of state after the military coup in 1984. Buhari was one of the leaders of the military coup of December 1983 that overthrew the democratically elected government of President Shehu Shagari.
At the time of the coup plot, Buhari was the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Third Armored Division of Jos. With the successful execution of the coup by General Buhari, Tunde Idiagbon was appointed Chief of General Staff (the de facto No. 2 in the administration). The coup ended Nigeria's short-lived Second Republic, a period of multiparty democracy started in 1979.
According to The New York Times, the officers who took power argued that "a flawed democracy was worse than no democracy at all". Buhari justified the military's seizure of power by castigating the civilian government as hopelessly corrupt and promptly suspended Nigeria’s 1979 Constitution.

Celebrities / Man Risks Life Just To Look Like The Incredible Hulk by ludamix(m): 6:14pm On May 04, 2015
But why. A Brazilian man has chosen to be "extra-ordinary" over being his simple self. The bodybuilder who modelled himself on the Incredible Hulk risked his life by injecting oil and alcohol into his arms and almost had them both amputated. Romario Dos Santos Alves, 25,said using the synthetic filler synthol cost him his sanity and nearly his life as he tried to kill himself when his wife was six months pregnant. He said his swollen muscles terrify children in his hometown of Caldas Novas in Brazil and they call him a 'beast' and a 'monster'.
Father-of-one used the potentially lethal cocktail to pump up his biceps to 25in and he now faces a lot of serious health issues.
