@flyuche: Don't mind these foolish people at Glo.

How many users in the U.S.A have 4g phones even?? Apart from the HTC Evo and Samsung Epic, what other 4g phones are there. Even the Iphone 4 is not 4g capable.

They should keep quiet and let us  have rest.
Don't they have a marketing department?? How dare they steal Verizon's LTE slogan - RULE YOUR WORLD!!
Um, hasn't Rule Your World been Glo's slogan for like ever?

Anyway, I know I am probably hoping to the wind but I hope Glo gets it right this time.

That is Kbps.

512 Kbps is half of 1 Mbps and 256 Kbps is a quarter.

PhonesIs The Android Market Available In Nigeria? by lumzi23(op): 1:22pm On Jan 07, 2011
The reason I am asking this is because I looking to purchase my very first smartphone in the not too distant future. I have ruled out the Iphone (even though it would have been my first choice otherwise) because the app store is not available in Nigeria. That being the case I have decided to go with an android phone, specifically the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S (or the i9200 Galaxy S2 if it comes out in time).

So, is the Android Market available in Nigeria (without jailbreaking or other such activities) or is it a lost cause. If it is not availabe I might just stick with something like a Blackberry. It would be a shame of course. Even my experience with my recently purchased iPod Touch has made me hungry for this touch thing.

I heard someone mention something about MTN launching 4G in Nigeria. Is this true?

COMPAQ:
I think Glo is lying about the capabilities of Glo 1. I suspect they are having some sort of serious unenvisaged issues with that cable cos why has it taken so long from landing the cable (Oct/Nov 2009) to launching it (Oct 1010) and even after that there seems to be minimal impact. Meanwhile, Mainone landed and launched within 2 months and on MTN their is definate impact!! Something is definately amiss!!
I think that once MTN's own (partly-owned) WACS submarine cable lands we should see even greater improvements from MTN. Someone in this thread also mentioned something about MTN laying their own nationwide fibre system (if I understood correctly). If that is true I think it means that laying of fibre at University of Nsuka Nigeria is probably just a testing ground for wider network plans (as I believe someone else has also mentioned).

Someone should warn Glo. If care is not taken MTN will beat them to the punch as far taking full advantage of these submarine cables is concerned.
GamingRe: Is There Xbox Live In Nigeria? by lumzi23: 12:12pm On Nov 30, 2010
I can technically play on Xbox live using IPNX and MTN 3G but the problem is too much lag with both. With the MTN there is also the problem of the NAT type being set to moderate which basically means that you will not be able to communicate with some people or even play with them. I don't think IPNX has this problem but I am not sure.

Ha!!!!!! Bros I beg, don't switch to Glo oh!! Except you are very sure Glo is working well where you are? I have used both of them in PH, Ibadan, lekki, Festac, Anthony village etc and all said and done, I have come to the conclusion that MTN offers the best 3G service in Nigeria. I have had a Glo modem for over a year now and it's been a year of woe. Right now i'm browsing with MTN, but my Glo refuses to connect or it connects and keeps dropping off!!

Stay away from Glo!!
Yeah, the MTN problem has stopped and it is working fine now.

ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by lumzi23: 6:01am On Nov 24, 2010
Is anyone else having problems with their MTN internet? I am. It is always switching from HSDPA to EDGE and when it does, it freezes (as in stops working), forcing me to stop the connection and restart again. This is especially annoying when I am trying to watch a video or something like that. I am getting frustrated and I might even switch to Glo if these people are not careful.
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by lumzi23: 2:26am On Nov 11, 2010
I have to admit, that N7,500 for 6 Gigs sounds good. Seems like they are really trying to compete with MTN which can only mean good things. However what I want to know is how it compares to MTN in terms speed, performance and relaibilty. Also, I wish there was some way to know if my location is covered by their HSDPA service.

2Mb/s is different from 2Mbps. One means Mega Bytes Per Second while the other means Mega Bits Per Second. 8Mbps == 1Mb/s.
You are close but wrong. As jdoss pointed out, MB means Megabytes while Mb means Megabits! Big B means bytes while small b means bits.

Anyway it seems that MTN recieved a boost in speed as well the Data limit. I am able to play Halo Reach with reduced lag so that the game actually becomes playable. Infact in the last game I don't think there was any lag at all!

To be clear I meant I have gotten 2Mb/s using speedtest specifically. Speedtest is only reliable as general indicator of speed, I think.

I have gotten more than 2Mb/s quite a few times and I believe I have even hit the 3Mb/s mark a couple of times.

Quite right! MTN, Zain and Glo seem to be down in PH at the moment. I haven't been able to connect to MTN at all for over a week now. Glo has also been problematic for about a week. It connects, but moves between HSDPA, EDGE, GPRS  and disconnects every minute or two. I figure a fibre optic backbone that deleivers data to the South East/South South may have been cut somewhere, probably by some construction going on. Funny enough the guys at customer service never seem to have aclue of the technical issues going on iro their network around the country.
Wow didn't know Glo had HSDPA.

Those speeds are pretty good for Naija. I guess I need to get glo and compare which is faster for myself. That said I don't think I have ever gotten 2Mb/s using MTN.

Djcn:
I second you, many people make complains without actually testing out 4 themselves, glo is fast but the issue should be reduction in tarrifs. Infact for the past three days mtn has been down in town. i use both glo and mtn and where i am presently glo is faster.
The question is do you have access to MTN's HSDPA service? From what I understand Glo still uses EDGE which is supposed to be slower than HSDPA. I know for a fact that when my MTN switches to EDGE it is much slower than their HSDPA service. I have tested also Etisalat which uses EDGE and it is much slower than MTN's HSDPA.

Going by Glo's site they have bumped up to 3.5G (like MTN) and their data limit is also 5gig's ( also similar to MTN though the cost for the Glo is still N10,000). What I want to know is:

1. Does Glo also have an HSDPA network?
2. When Glo is at their best are they as fast as MTN at their best (or possibly faster)?

Maybe I am confused but most people I have come across seem to have a problem with Glo's service. Also while I have not used every ISP in Nigeria, of the ones I have used MTN is easily the fastest and I live in an out of the way area (even if they are not perfectly reliable).

Either way I doubt either Glo or MTN are as fast as they should be compared to what you get on in advanced countries.

Also Tobby I am not trying to insult you but you really need to post a screen shot using speedtest or the results of one of your 1.5gig downloads. If Glo is as fast as you say there really is no need not to post a screenshot.

EDIT: Okay Tobby I just downloaded a 76.5MB file using a download manager which splits the download into many smaller pieces and then downloads them more or less simultaneous with average speeds in excess of 100KB/s (once even hitting the 200MB/s mark). Even with all that it still takes approximately 8-10 minutes to download. I just don't see 1.5 Gigabytes happening in 35 mins on Glo even if were faster than MTN.

Killzone 3 putting Crysis to shame. Stop that right now.

I am pretty sure true HD is on PC. Heck I am pretty sure you get even higher resolutions than on consoles.
Motion control is mainly for consoles true but there aren't that many excellent games for it.
I am pretty sure that NVIDIA had graphics cards that support True 3D. Besides I don't think that there are many 3D games on consoles now if any.
PC have even more storage than Consoles.
This one made me laugh. PC's have been doing online gaming for much longer than consoles.
PC's also have an online store. It's called "Steam".
Home isn't all that great from what I hear. I wouldn't be surprised if you found something like it on PC.
Media hub. What does that even mean?
Wifi exists on PC's too.

I admit GOW3 is impressive, for a console game but it doesn't touch the best on a PC. Same goes for Killzone 3 and any other console game you care to mention. Also if GOW2 can touch some Xbox 360 games it can also touch some PS3 games but I seriously doubt it can do either.

Also, Move is only a little more accurate than a Wiimote from what I hear.

and most of those things listed has its origins in games developed on the pc platform

anyway - if you're a cripple who prefers to be confined and tied up, enjoy playing your unconfigurable games on your console

games on the ps3/xbox are not there because they cannot run on a pc, but because the developers chose to make it that way

crytek's ceo originally intended that crysis would run only on console - but for some reason - he changed his mind - probably because he realises that crysis will NEVER REACH ITS FULL POTENTIAL on a console.
But Crysis 2 is coming consoles isn't it.

While console games lack the flexibility of some PC games they also give you the convenience, assurance and unified structure that you can only find on consoles. The way I see it all comes down to the individual gamer and what they like.
GamingRe: Console Or Gaming Pc? by lumzi23: 12:58am On Sep 16, 2010
It's unlikely that Kinect will be more precise than a Mouse and keyboard for those sorts of games. From what I hear it is only a little bit more advanced than the wiimote.

Hmm, Honestly, IT is all about how well you can do it. It might be wrong saying programming is much more financially beneficial than Programming!

Cause some website developers are financially boyant than programmers and vice versa!

But i can definitely tell you that, at some point you might require knowledge of Programming for your websites,

Also this days, programmers are more sort after and better paid than web site designers! Cause GUI(Graphical User Interface ) is more or less easy to get around with softwares like Dreamweaver and CO.

So it's better you go for the second!

I will also lastly say that Programming is not as hard as it seems but definitely more difficult than web design!
Thank you for that. I will definately give it some thought. I am now leaning towards the programming.

That said, I will definately try to do both if it is all possible. If not I will go with programming and do the other stuff some other way.
