Experts from across the globe have commended the Osun school feeding programme tagged O'Meals again at the 16th Annual Global Child Nutrition Forum held in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, South Africa. The Deputy Governor who also doubles as the Commissioner for Education of the State of Osun, Mrs. Grace Titi Laoye- Tomori, who represented Nigeria at the forum took time to explain in details the success of O'Meals in one of the sessions. Speaking to over 250 delegates from 40 countries, including 10 ministers and 18 deputy ministers, she highlighted how the use of biometrics data capturing had helped to reduce issues of leakages in the system. Laoye-Tomori also narrated how Osun has improved its economy by empowering small scale farmers, youth and women through the school feeding programme in the state. According to her, "As part of the efforts of the Aregbesola administration to promote functional education in the state, the governor decided to feed elementary pupils with nourishing food. "The programme has impacted positively on school enrolment with an increase of over 25%. We are presently feeding over 252,000 pupils which has increased the enrolment profile of pupils in the public schools. "It is our belief that if the school feeding programme helps attract pupils to public schools, the newly built schools with the state of the art facilities which provide a serene environment conducive to learning will help to retain them". The deputy governor told participants. She however used the occasion to seek the collaboration of United States Deputy Under Secretary, The President of World Food Programme and the Centre of Excellence Against Hunger with the Government of Osun. Other speakers at the forum supported by International organisations like the World Food Programme, WFP, Centre of Excellence Against Hunger, Cozinha Brasil, Social Service for Industry Brazil, SESI and the Department of Basic Education of the Republic of South Africa, includes, Genye White, the President of the Board of Directors, GCNF. Others are, Daniel Balaban, Director , WFP’s Centre of Excellence against Hunger, Janey Thornton, Deputy Under Secretary, Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, United States Department of Agriculture and Alice Martin-Daihirou, Country Director, Uganda, WFP. Other countries that had earlier submitted briefs on their feeding programme were also given the opportunity to showcase and respond to queries on their programmes. Countries represented at the16th Annual Global Child Nutrition forum included, Russia, Holland, Mozambique, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Uganda, USA and Sri-Lanka. It would be recalled that Governor Aregbesola himself had been guest of the British Parliament last year when he was invited to share the experience of the Osun school meal programme and its mode of implementation. The programme had culminated in another conference hosted by Osun which drew many states of the federation to understudy the Osun model with a view to adopting throughout Nigeria. |

Alleged Boko Haram Sponsor Modu Sheriff Storms Mauduguri With 200-Soldier Protection Ali Modu Sheriff, the former governor of Borno State who is alleged to be funding the violent Boko Haram militancy in the Northeast, arrived in the state capital today with over 200 soldiers in his convoy. Ali Modu Sheriff, the former governor of Borno State who is alleged to be funding the violent Boko Haram militancy in the Northeast, arrived in the state capital today with over 200 soldiers in his convoy. He was in town to pay a condolence visit on a friend who lost his mother. Mr. Sheriff ignited a political firestorm only last week when he showed up in meetings in Chad with President Goodluck Jonathan and his Chadian counterpart, Idris Derby. That revelation brought the Nigerian president under a serious political backlash. The public outcry forced Mr. Jonathan to declare publicly he will not interfere with the investigation of Mr. Sheriff by the State Security Services. Mr. Sheriff’s foray into Maiduguri in stunning force late following his arrival on a private jet shocked residents who were suddenly swamped by a massive convoy of soldiers, making many to speculate that the Chief of Defense Staff, Alex bade, was in town. Mr. Sheriff made the even more astonishing announcement to close pals that he was merely visiting an associate, Kassim Imam, who lost his mother a few days ago. Analysts say Mr. Sheriff’s possession and open demonstration of such lavish federal force and protection reopens the question as to his real relationship with Mr. Jonathan, and the future of any investigation of the sponsors of Boko Haram. Some Maiduguri residents and political observers expressed surprise about Mr. Sheriff’s huge convoy in view of Mr. Jonathan’s denials. They wondered why 200 soldiers that should be fighting against Boko Haram, the sect Sheriff is allegedly funding, should instead be protecting him. Efforts to obtain comments from presidential spokesman Reuben Abati, who issued a statement denying that Mr. Sheriff was in Chad with Mr. Jonathan, met with failure. |

20 Germany-trained Osun Youths Return with appreciation, Ready to spearhead agricultural revolution in Osun. Subject: LETTER OF APPRECIATION Mr. Governor, We herein use this opportunity to personally thank you for sending us to Germany for a 3-month agricultural training programme. We sincerely appreciate this kind gesture of yours and must note that this is indeed the first time an African head of government would invest so much in the human capacity development of youths in the area of agriculture and that it would never be an understatement each time you are addressed as the “first among your equals”. During our 3-month sojourn in Germany, we learnt quite a lot of innovative and useful things in the field of modern agriculture which we believe if given a chance to replicate would greatly assist your Government in its passionate drive to banish hunger, eradicate poverty and banish unemployment. We assure you that with our newly acquired knowledge and skills being put into practice we can: 1. Drastically reduce the percentage which an average Osun citizen spends on food to approximately 5% and; 2. also help in massively increasing the Internally Generated Revenue of the State of Osun. 3. These and many more are we ready to do in order to uplift and develop the state to the level that you passionately and compassionately wish to take her and its citizens to through agriculture. We seek to achieve all these and many more through ”a platform of an independent, innovative and enterprising agricultural agency”. We would like to seek your assistance” in terms of some upkeep money starting from this month of December while we patiently wait on your graciousness to grant us this productive platform”. Once again, we want to appreciate you for this opportunity you have given us and also assure you that we will always be at your disposal to help develop the agricultural sector of the State of Osun. Thank you in anticipation of your favourable response. Best, SIGNED: Your German trained Osun youths (Batch A) 1. BELLO A. T. 2. ALADESANMI A. Y. 3. FADARE T. 4. ADEWOLE A. 5. KEHINDE T.J. 6.
