Nigerian army accused of 'unjustified' Shia killings
Soldiers fire on unarmed children without provocation before unwarranted raids in Zaria town, Human Rights Watch says.

Nigerian soldiers fired on unarmed Shia children without provocation before unjustified raids that killed hundreds of the minority group in the West African country, Human Rights Watch said on Wednesday.

The US-based group disputed the Nigerian military's version that raids from December 12 to 14 on three Shia locations in the northern town of Zaria followed an attempted assassination of the army chief.

Nigeria's military said the raids came after Shia demonstrators tried to block the convoy of General Tukur Buratai.

Human Rights Watch, however, said the army's version "just doesn't stack up".

"It is almost impossible to see how a roadblock by angry young men could justify the killings of hundreds of people," said Daniel Bekele, Africa director of Human Rights Watch.

"At best it was a brutal overreaction and at worst it was a planned attack on the minority Shia group."

According to Human Rights Watch, witnesses at the Hussainniyah mosque said dozens of soldiers took up positions by the mosque at around midday on December 12, at least an hour before the army chief of staff was due to pass by.

Without provocation, the soldiers fired on people coming out of the mosque, initially killing an estimated five people and injuring others, including children attending classes at the centre, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW), which said it interviewed many witnesses separately at locations in Kaduna and Zaria, on December 17 and 18.

A 14-year-old girl attending a maths class in the mosque complex said that she was shot as she walked out of the centre with other children, HRW said.

As many as 1,000 people may have been killed, rights activists say, sparking protests in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north that spread to Tehran, the Iranian capital, and New Delhi in India.

Nigerian Muslims wounded in the raids were dying in detention because they were being denied medical care, the Shia Islamic Movement in Nigeria said on Monday.

Ibrahim Musa, the movement's spokesman, said in a statement that two of its members died in detention on Sunday.

He said at least 40 other wounded members - including founder Ibrahim Zakzaky - were also not receiving medical treatment.

Musa said police handed over the bodies of 12 members wounded in a protest and later detained in Kaduna city on December 15.

PoliticsRe: Exclusive: Retired High Court Judge To Lead New Biafra Campaign Movement by Mack3N: 5:26pm On Dec 23, 2015
IROHINOodua:
By Andrew Ikoli
Onitsha
A retired High Court judge, Justice Eze Ozobu will now lead a new coalition of several pro-Biafra groups, the announcement was made today in Enugu. The fresh initiative involves the setting up of what is called "Customary Government" in the Eastern part of Nigeria. The Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) spurred mass rallies in cities across the Eastern States recently, with calls for Igbo self determination. The call has received support from some non-Igbo Nigerians like Prof Wole Soyinka and Catholic Bishop Father Mathew Kukah amidst growing support in most of Europe and North America.
Irohinoodua correspondent in Onitsha who monitored the new development reports that the various groups merged in Enugu today at a small ceremony marked with several locals in attendance. The new coalition also announced the formation of what it called “shadow government.”. The coalition pledged to work for Igbo self determination in a peaceful and coordinated manner.
“Today, history is made. We have brought all the pro-Biafra groups together. They will now work under one umbrella. We are going to press for self determination of the Igbo people is an organized but peaceful manner. We are making contacts with members of the international community for diplomatic assistance. Our campaign will be non-violent”, Chidi Onwuka, an official from Ihiala told Irohinoodua.
He said the new coalition will not break any Nigeria laws but will assert the right to self determination as enshrined in the United Nations, (UN) Charter. The groups that merged were Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB), the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, (IPOD) and several other community-based groups with shared dreams and aspiration for a sovereign nation of the Ibo speaking people.
An official of IPOD, a lawyer, Emeka Emekesiri told the audience that the new group will abide by laws and operate within the confines of international conventions. The group also announced what it called the “Customary Government of the Indigenous People of Biafra.”

Other officials appointed into the Governing Council of the movement are His Royal Majesty, (HRM), the Honourable Justice Eze Ozo¬bu, OFR (Chairman); Dr Dozie Ikedife, OON, JP (Deputy Chair¬man); Brig. Gen. Joe Achuz¬ia, (Secretary-General); HRM, Eze Iheanyi Nwokenna, OFG, JP (Public Relations Officer). Other members of the council are still on duty. Achuzia, alias Air Raid was a prominent iconic figure during the Nigerian civil war.
The statement released at the end of the meeting further stated ‘‘We are happy to announce that the Customary Government of Indigenous People of Biafra has commenced operations at the Government Secretariat located at Enugu, in the interim.

“All the ministries are located within the complex but liaison of¬fices shall be opened in all parts of Biafra land, for easy coordination.
‘‘The Supreme Council of El¬ders of Indigenous People of Bi¬afra has approved a 24-mem¬ber National Executive Council (NEC) that will run the govern¬ment. The NEC will consist of the representatives from all pro-Bia¬fra groups and all the provinces in Biafra land so that none will be excluded.
‘’The junior staff officers of the CGIPB have commenced work at the Secretariat but the Director of Administration and Principal Of¬ficers of the Customary Govern¬ment shall be announced to the public soon.”

‘’The Biafran Government has taken off under Customary Law within the Nigerian Legal System. It is similar to the Sharia Government in the North. We shall not break any Nigerian law. It is a transitional government.
‘’Everything we do is legal. All the Indigenous People of Bia¬fra are therefore advised to submit themselves to the authority of the Government of Indigenous People of Biafra headed by the Supreme Council of Elders,’’ Emekesri stated.

CharlesPhc:

I personally feel Nnamdi Kanu has just set a new precedence in the Nigerian Judiciary with this landmark admittance from the judge.

With the statement from the judge, Kanu's lawyers can go ahead to file for contempt of Court against the DG of the DSS otherwise, anyone arraigned by the DSS may follow suite and claim lack of confidence in trial.

The DG of DSS should now immediately tender his resignation letter otherwise he must be invited to the NASS to explain on whose order he is acting in disobedience to a court order.

If he fails to do so, then it becomes an indictment (which could also be an impeachable offence) against the President and C-in-C of the FRN....!!!

You are very correct, all those shouting he will chop beans/remain in custody till 2019 have lost touch of reality.

This can turn from hunter to hunted.

PoliticsBREAKING: Judge Exempts Self From Hearing Treason Charges Against Nnamdi Kanu by Mack3N(op): 4:15pm On Dec 23, 2015
Following the fresh six-count charges filled by the Federal Government of Nigeria against the embattled leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, a federal High Court judge has exempted himself from hearing the case. Justice Ahmed Mohammed who announced the decision on Wednesday in Abuja after Mr. Kanu objected to the case, said that it was needless, as the federal government had repeatedly disobeyed previous court rulings.
Kanu was charged before the Federal High Court, Abuja alongside two others, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi in a fresh six-count charge of treason and managing the affairs of ‘an unlawful society.’ The government is accusing Mr. Kanu of plotting to split Nigeria, by creating a Biafra Republic with south east, south south states, and parts of Kogi and Benue states, as component units.
Kanu, who was arraigned before Justice Mohammed Wednesday, told the court before commencement of the prosecution’s plea that he preferred being held in the detention, than subjecting himself to a trial, which outcome will not be respected. He said his previous trials had various outcomes that were abused or neglected by the office of the State Security Service, SSS.
The counsel to the prosecution, who is also the Federal Director of Prosecution, office of the Attorney General, Mohamed Diri, told the court that based on section 396 (2) of the constitution, the defendant had no right to object to being tried by the court until after the plea is heard. However, Justice Mohammed who said he was opting out of the case also countered the prosecution counsels, saying that Mr. Kanu had the right to reject the trial, “after all justice is rooted on confidence,” he said.
“If any of the parties has no confidence in the court, he has the right to say so”, Mr. Mohammed ruled. He noted that the prosecution would have done the same thing if they were in Kanu’s shoes. “Assuming it was the prosecution, if they had no confidence in the court of jurisdiction; would they not have done so?” “I hereby remit the case file to the honourable chief judge of this court to reassign it,” the judge said.
