The counsel to detained leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, on Wednesday withdrew the petition against the Nigerian Army at the Presidential Investigation Panel on Human Right Violations.

Mr. Falana said although it was painful, he had to withdraw the petition in view of the fact that there was already a judicial commission of inquiry, currently handling the case.

He, however, said that the panel could on its own, decide to listen to any witness in the case, and urged the panel to keep the petition in view

Mr. Falana also urged the panel to issue an order directing the federal government to comply with the ruling of the Federal High Court that ordered for the release of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky from detention.

He berated the Federal Government for not obeying the ruling of the Federal High Court on Mr. El-Zakzaky, adding that since Nigeria’s independence, he had never seen a couple detain together.

He said that the couple should be released based on the premise that the country was operating the rule of law, adding that it was painful he could not put the petition through.

“We are already taking other steps to ensure that El-Zakzaky is released, because this is the first time in the history of this country that a couple will be detained,” he said.

Akinseye George, the counsel to the Nigerian Army, said that the matter should be expunged from the panel list.

He said that the panel was magnanimous enough to accommodate the petition by shifting dates and time for the petitioner.

He said that the panel should disregard the petitioner’s plea that the petition be kept in view, stressing that the petition ended with the withdrawal.

Justice Biobele George, chairman of the panel, struck out the petition based on voluntary withdrawal by the petitioner

The Presidential Investigation Panel to Review Compliance of the Armed Forces with Human Rights Obligations and Rules of Engagement sittings ended on November 8.

The panel had travelled round the six geo-political zones to receive petitions and listen to petitioners’ allegations of human rights violation by the military.

The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has said that the present campaign mounted by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State to vie for the 2019 Presidency is contrary to the decision of the party’s convention that zoned presidency to the North.

Makarfi stated this in an interview in Kaduna when he spoke on national issues and the progress made by the PDP reconciliation committee in resolving the problems of aggrieved members.

He said: “He is on his own. What he is doing is not in compliance with the position of the party. The party’s position has not changed. The convention has zoned the presidency to the North and the chairmanship of the party to the South.”

Besides, Makarfi also dismissed speculation that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may be given an automatic ticket to contest the same position on the platform of the PDP if he finally decides to join the party before the 2019 general election.

Meanwhile, Fayose has said that the leadership of the PDP in the state adopted Option A4 system to conduct its primaries to select candidates for the coming local council election to allow transparency in the process.

Fayose, who stated this in Ado-Ekiti during the commencement of the exercise, also said the system would give room for the most popular candidates to win.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi yesterday, the governor was quoted as saying that Option A4 system would also help to reduce acrimony.

In another development, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, has urged the national leadership of the party to intervene in the crisis rocking the Ekiti State chapter of the PDP.

He alleged that Fayose might destroy the party if the national leadership failed to intervene.

Director of Media and Publicity of Prince Adebayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM), Niyi Ojo, stated this yesterday in Ado-Ekiti while reacting to the decision of the governor to conduct the primary in the Government House.

He said: “The national leadership of our great party should quickly come to the rescue of the party in Ekiti State before Governor Fayose destroys the party.

“In the first instance, the governor created his own constitution by fixing the maximum age for chairmanship candidate at 50 years while maximum age for councillorship candidate at 30 years against the provisions of the Nigerian constitution. There is nowhere in the constitution that stipulates maximum age for any elective position.

“Furthermore, the primary elections to elect the candidates for councillorship and chairmanship of various local councils commenced yesterday at the Ekiti State Government House instead of the various wards and local councils respectively. The governor is the electoral officer for the exercise.”

If the military has a good defense counsel the prayers of Kanu's lawyer does not hold water. Please note I'm not in any way in support of the military action.

It is so simple and it is so because there was never a military operation to capture Kanu. The military was just conduction it's normal operations across the country and some hoodlums attacked them and caused threats to lives of ordinary citizens so the soldiers chased them to different locations within Aba community.

The real question should be WHERE IS KANU? Answering this question will determine the fate of Abaribe and others who stood for him. If he's been murdered by the army as some of his supporters are alleging, then why this issue of his whereabout then?

But if it can be established that he is truly in hiding, then Abaribe and others will have to convince him to come out or else they will be in trouble and should be ready to forfeit their money. It is that simple.
