The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike on Wednesday over the non-payment of salary arrears of workers in the state.

The State Chairman of NULGE, Edward Ilenikhena, disclosed this to The PUNCH on Tuesday in Benin, the state capital.

Ilenikhena explained that workers in the 18 local government councils were owed salary arrears between two to 18 months‎, with Egor local government council having the highest backlog of unpaid salaries.



According to him, the union would stage a mass protest in Benin, after which the strike would commence.

“Effective tomorrow, we are ‎embarking on a mass protest in Benin, after which we will proceed on an indefinite strike,” he said on the telephone.

The state government had on May 1 promised to intervene in the payment of outstanding salary arrears of Egor workers, after the council was omitted from the bailout the state received from the federal government.

But Ilenikhena said, “Those were just statements; the promise started right from May 1. As we speak, even the seventh-month bailout he (governor) said he would apply for them, none has been implemented.

However, with less than six weeks to the September 10 governorship election, he noted that ‎though the union would not influence the voting pattern of its members, they were not satisfied with the current development.

He said, “The decision is their own; we do not have permanent voter cards for the union. But I cannot even ‎visit them in any of their LGAs because of the anger they have over the salaries not being paid to them

As the padding controversy in the House of Reps continues to deepens, investigation has shown that one of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leaders, Bola Tinubu, has been working round the clock to distance his protégé in the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, House Majority Leader, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, from the scandal.
The Whistler learnt that it was no coincidence that since the scandal broke out, the House Leader has not been mentioned by the main accuser, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, former chairman, House Committee on Appropriations, but he has accused all other principal officers including Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

A source in the House of Reps, who asked not to be named, said Jibrin has been promised soft landing if Gbajabiamila is left out of his allegation and will be rewarded if the House Leader is able to gain the Speakership once the “tidal wave of the budget padding scandal sweeps the present leadership away,” the source said.

According to the House source, Tinubu has waited for the opportune time to hit back at Dogara for defying the APC’s directive by emerging Speaker over and above his preferred candidate, Gbajabiamila.

“Is it not curious that since this matter broke out, the House leader’s name has not being mentioned once though he was in the thick of the budgeting process?

“It may interest you to know that so many government officials like the SGF will be caught in this budget padding scandal because the House leader was used to incorporate projects on his behalf and others.”


Documents obtained by The Whistler showed that the House Leader was allocated over N2.8 billion constituency projects with most located in Osun state, Surulere federal constituency, Lagos state, and Niger state.

Most of the projects are to be funded from the Office of the SGF. For instance, 13 projects from the House Leader’s office are meant for Osun state costing over N650million with the funds drawn mainly from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Projects to be funded from the SGF’s office include N200million construction of solar streetlight Wards G, G1, G2, G3, E, E1, F, F1, F2 and F3 in Surulere1 Federal constituency of Lagos state.

Other projects domiciled in the House Leader’s office drawing funds from the SGF’s office include; supply of 5Nos Toyota Hiace buses, N50million; 14Nos Kia Rio and 7 Kia Serato cars, N50million; supply of 100Nos of chest freezers, N24million, supply of mobile toilets N40million amongst other supplies. All for Surulere 1 federal constituency.

The House Leader’s office also inserted projects for Kontagora and Wushishi federal constituencies valued at N100million. The projects are for ICT, hairdressing and barbing salon, tailoring/knitting, borehole/surface tanks, generator house for 60kva, security post and perimeter fencing for an undisclosed location, as well as supply of motorcycles.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of buying PVCs from voters in different parts of the state with a view to rigging the September 10 Governorship election in the state. Speaking at a rally of the All Progressives Congress in Jattu, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state, Monday, Oshiomhole said anyone caught in the illegality will be prosecuted and jailed if found guilty. According to him, “They are going round, collecting PVCs and dropping lies, please don’t sell your PVCs. Poverty cannot be cured with a dash, it has to be fought on a systematic basis. “In Agenebode, they are buying PVCs, they will say bring it, we will give you N5,000. Ask them, if they sweat to make the money, will they use it to buy PVC? “Don’t allow them, after impoverishing you, they take N5,000 and stop you from voting. I’ve told the security agencies to monitor, when we catch them they will be prosecuted and jailed, but please, N5,000 will not bail anyone out of poverty.” The Governor said “when we say the PDP, you actually buried it, we only announced it, and they will remain politically dead. They died in sin, they undermined the people, looted the treasury, failed all the questions and they breached all 10 commandments of development, so they died in sin and shall never resurrect in our lifetime. “I hear them say Change the change, the dead cannot change the living because they are dead politically, they cannot change us who are politically living. So it’s a futile slogan. He said the PDP ruined the nation’s economy in 16 years. According to him “On May 29, 1999, when the PDP took over the reins of the Federal Government, the official rate of naira was N21.90 to $1, by the time they were chased out of power, the naira was already exchanging for close to N200.” We have written our own development testimonial in our own ink and they have written the testimonial of their failure in their own ink.” Candidate of the APC, Mr Godwin Obaseki said the Edo progress cannot be put on the reverse by the PDP, adding “we will continue with what Oshiomhole has started; he has built roads, schools, hospitals, so we will continue with the next phase with human capital development.” He said the Leventis Farm which has been shut for a long time now will be re-opened and will provide over 10,000 jobs for youths of the area. He hailed Governor Adams Oshiomhole for establishing the Edo University in Iyamho, saying the university which is world-class will be appreciated by people of the state in the next 20 years. Over 2,000 people led by Hon Peter Iyhu decamped to the APC from the PDP at the rally.
