I still maintain that a “shut down” or “lock down” is not an appropriate response in countries like Nigeria. This is the absolutely worst time to copy the response that western countries implemented. Our economy is too weak and our people too poor to afford a shut down. How many people can actually afford to stock up on two weeks worth of supply when majority live from hand to mouth and depend on charity/transfer payments from relatives overseas. An appropriate response would’ve been to ramp up the production of mask and hand gloves and hand sanitizers which would be made free or subsidized and easily assessable to all Nigerians. Then a mandatory use of those sanitary items should be encouraged and awareness should be created on all media platforms!! Then, the NCDC should be empowered to ramp up testing and isolation should there be cases. The police should be mandated to arrest and fine anyone without a nose mask when in public!! A shutdown has hurt and will continue to hurt the majority of our populace and businesses. That is a western response because they can afford to doll out trillions of dollars and maintain consistent production of supplies which will encourage their residents to stay home!!! WE MUST NOT COPY EVERYTHING FROM THE WEST! OUR RESPONSE SHOULD BE TAILORED FOR OUR SITUATION!! Social distancing and shutdown cannot work in a country a little bit bigger than Texas but with a population larger than all the African countries and most countries on earth!! |

While his intention is noble and kind, I think this is a wrong approach to tackling the unemployment issues! |
It’s high time we push for a law that makes it impossible for former head of states to become civilian president. Though mediocre, The biggest strides we made in our democracy were during the Jonathan/Yaardua era. We should not keep recycling the old people with ideas that never worked! |
