Even though I will prefer for him to rot in jail, but settling for a government lawyer is a smart move.

He definitely know that the odds against him are high, so the best thing is to get a lawyer that have some level of raport with the prosecutor's office that will assist to strike out few charges, enter plea-bargain and get a reduced sentence.
Nope!!

They are not government lawyer!
The only lawyers that work for the government are the prosecutors!!

Court appointed lawyers are those apply to help offer legal representation to people without the financial means to do so. The court then pays them a stipend for their efforts. I think it is 500$ per case the last time i checked.

I spent the last 2 months fighting a DUI case in Texas. Spent a lot of money in order to get the case dropped.
Through my travails, i got schooled in the American legal system. This place is unforgiving and as soon as this lock down is lifted; i will be on the first flight back home. Nigerian embassy in U.S. has entirely abandoned people that were unfortunate enough to be outside Nigeria before the crises.
i have been in the U.S. for over 5 months even though i went for a 1 month business trip in March and was supposed to return end of April.

CrimeRe: Hushpuppi Transferred To California For Trial by magicminister:
I don't know why Hush is making this move but i will only assume it is due to financial considerations.
The importance of hiring a seasoned and high profile lawyer is not because they can argue lost cases. Its simply because these lawyers often know well placed people within the judiciary system that and can often leverage their relationship to get their clients (the accused) a better deal.

They often charge hefty fees from $500 to $1,500++ per hour.

A court appointed lawyer is simply a "charge and bail" lawyer provided to the those without the means to pay for a private lawyer.
A court appointed lawyer may be vested in your case but they often have incredibly high case loads and cannot give everyone the attention they need to overcome their legal travails. They always recommend you plead guilty or "no-contest" and leave you at the mercy of the court system.

As a non-American and also black, the chances of Hush beating this case is extremely bleak and the fact he is settling for a court appointed lawyer makes me feel his assets have been frozen or he does not have any means to bring funds to the U.S.

I do not condone Fraud as this makes it harder to do business with the rest of the world but Hushpuppi is a Nigerian.
We condemn the crime but we must never support outsiders choosing to prosecute our citizens for crimes they committed.
If the crime was committed on US soil, it is a different ball game. But it was committed outside US soil with victims from all over the world.
We must all call for Judicial reforms in Nigeria whereby, the common man can expect a speedy and honest justice in every circumstance.

Lets not forget John Mitchener, a White American that is currently in Nigeria and has defrauded Nigerian companies to the tune of Billions of Naira. His activities contributed to some major Nigerian companies going bankrupt.
Our law enforcement agencies granted him bail while quietly allowing him to work with the US embassy to scurry out of Nigeria. Must we keep bowing to the White manhuh Hushpuppi's fraud is not even a fraction of what Mr John stole but he is facing 20-life while mr John is patted on the back and sent back to US. where is the BBC article, where is the CNN article, where are the bloggershuh? smh!

Errrrrr. You go need patience oooo.

One thing you should know is that your brother is now married and is firstly responsible to his wife and kids before any other person so him allowing three extended family to stay in this hard times is an act of kindness and bravery please don't add more stress to his life by bickering with your in-laws. We women are troublesome by nature then when we see someone who has our time we extend the trouble. The truth is
1. There is no way the room would have been left for you while there are women in the house (they need privacy).
2. Why will you say that you will go to the village? Don't you know you give your brother some kind of security in the midst of his wife and her obviously troublesome sisters by staying with him? Has he asked you to leave yet?
3. You where wrong to slap the young woman, no matter what the grieviance is you don't touch a woman.
4. They where wrong to throw your mattress out but please forgive them and move on. Thank God your brother made provisions for a replacement.
5. Take this place as a training ground for your future, if it's anything you should be bothered about now, is to be more determined about gaining independence and making it in life.
6. Leave rofo rofo fight for women, in fact ignore them totally for your national peace.
7. Hustle!!! Hustle!!! Hustle oooooo!!!!

Hugs.
Very wise response. Anyone that has been through life and isn’t entitled, will feel what you just said to the core.

God bless!

There is nothing to see here!! The American that defrauded Nigerians to the tune of billions of dollars was granted bail in Nigeria and probably working his way back to the US where he will not be prosecuted.
Our boys are held without bail and given incredibly long sentences.

Biz strategy -SAMPLE 1 u
Send scouts all over Africa to storm african streets
Buy or bring in exceptionally talented players wasting all over the place
In less than no time 11 football wizards will be plying the European pitch
The hungry to deliver players will of course be bought without breaking the bank
When she set the club on motion those cheap players in a short while becomes assets of inestimable value which arsenal Man _u Chelsea etc will have to break bank to buy her players ,let's not talk about sponsorships and other ,accruables
I take an exception to the bolded because that was irrelevant and tbh, pointless. You can have a meaningful conversation and also disagree without being vituperative.

The major flaw in your business model is that you assumed she’s the only one scouting for talents all over Africa and beyond.
Even if she manages to find any grade A talent, they’ll be snatched up by a bigger team before they even sign a contract. If you’re basing the success of the z league club and it’s ability to snag talent, then that club will fail.

The wiser option would have been

1-to invest in Nigerian premier league, scout for the best talents in Nigeria and package them for the highest bidders all over the world.

2- invest in a top tier club and own some stake where she gets paid off the profits.

I’ve been in business for so long and I know that while this may be a legit venture, there is absolutely no reasonableness behind buying a z league club. At least not from a financial gains perspective.

He may have the guns and backing of militants but reps have the backing of the Judicial system.

While things rarely ever work in Nigeria, I’ve seen that when our leaders really mean to do something, it gets done so well. NDDC was supposed to help Niger deltans. Unfortunately, even indigenes the oil rich states in Niger delta are mostly living below poverty line. They loot it all, they drive bentleys and rolls Royce, they call themselves “oil big boys” but the next man in their community Dey waste.

Hell yes!!
If God blesses my business and it grows to the level I envision where people will seek internship, I wouldn’t care if you’re 40 or 100.
As long as you can do the job as delegated and willing to learn. You must also be comfortable working with people from every tribe and religion and be respectful of everyone regardless of their status in the firm.

God will see me there cos I know I’ve paid my dues for the longest.

Nawaooo

That guy is there bleeding out,
People are around him taking pictures.
Collectively, they have more than enough resources to get him to a hospital, or Atleast check his pulse or lay him on the side to clear his airways.

At first glance, there’s a good chance he’s still alive and clinging on to life but unconscious and may just suffocate on his own blood!

Rather than help, they’d prefer to take pictures and post online.

The reasoning of most Nigerians is just extremely backwards!

During my undergraduate days, a woman was in a bike accident, everyone thought she was dead and as usual( they gathered around her and saying “this woman will not die in Jesus name”.
I was taking a bike to my cousin’s place when I saw the crowd and decided to see what’s going on. As soon as I made my way to the front, I immediately sprung into action, felt for her pulse, asked the people to move back to allow enough air circulation, then I too off my shirt used my unsterilized clothe to Apply pressure to the place blood was gushing from.

Her pulse was really faint and her body morbidly cold. My actions slowed down the bleeding and then I called on a bike man (a spectator) to take us to hospital, the bike man ran away. Eventually, a car was made available by a nearby hospital after about an hour or so.

My actions that day stopped her from bleeding out and that woman is still alive today thanks to my quick thinking and action.

God bless the good people in Nigeria. Shame on the rest.

The Nairaland admins should stop moving gory pics like this to the front page. What if it was your brother or sister or mother or father? Or loved ones and friends that have their last last moments on earth shared for online likes and comments... we all have to collectively do better

This guy got me. Credit us individually
The club asked, “how they can help Nigerians”.
A lot of people selfishly went in there to request for funds to be paid directly to their account rather than requesting for something that would benefit as many people as possible.

- food bank
- recruiting talents increasingly from Nigeria
- supply of medical equipment
- building an isolation centre
- youth empowerment program (e.g scholarships based on athletic abilities)

So many things thy could have said but the first thing they thought about was themselves and their bank accounts

My country Epitomizes a society without justice!
Such society can never have peace.

E.g. the founder of Boko haram was the extrajudicially executed; today we have a Boko Haram that is 1million times more deadly.

Ken saro wiwa was executed on the orders of a kangaroo court, today we have militant groups well armed and able to bring the country to its knees.

Corruption was neglected and even praised, today we have one of the poorest countries on earth.

A country without justice can never have peace.

Shutdown is not for poor countries like Nigeria.
Enforce the use of PPEs (e.g mask and gloves) and make healthcare accessible for all!

Make it a punishable offense for businesses to fire employees taking take off for their health.

That’s how we should do it! This shut down is for countries where majority can afford to stock up on a week supply of food!

The average Nigerian lives hand to mouth and even those that can stickup don’t have power supply!!

Lol, it is absolutely relevant, and it is mandatory irrespective of the pilots error, any standard airline would tell you that, if it wasn't, airline wouldn't be as safe as it is today.
Humans are prone to error, that is why the airplane is designed to be so safe, with at least 2pilots, auto pilot, at least 2working engines.

It is easy to say that simply because the pilots had a choice cos the engine failed shortly after take off, they could have returned, but what if they were half way into the flight.
I think you’re right. I don’t know nearly enough about aviation to speak to this. Maybe the OP can help us decide!!

It is only wickedness, pride or greed that can push anybody to go steal. If you you are hungry, ask your neighbor for food or go to any restaurant and ask for leftovers. Hunger is not enough reason for anybody to steal.
Okay! I’ve heard you.
I am making excuses for stealing food but if I catch someone stealing I’ll either take it back or let them keep it! No too much drama! I came from the struggle so I understand what it means to go to bed hungry for 2 days straight! Have you ever starved for 2 days and it’s not because you are fasting but because you don’t have the means or resources to put food on your table!
Then you try to beg but your neighbors are equally struggling! Then you try to approach random people on the street to ask them for anything they can afford to part with but they act like you’re invisible and the few that acknowledge your presence will outrightly accuse you of being a liar because you don’t look “disable”.

If you have never experienced raw and unadulterated suffering, please don’t judge

It takes a lot of humility to go out and beg strangers!!

No one deserves to be shabbily treated for stealing FOOD. Worst I feel they deserve is simply collect whatever it is they've taken and, if you can, give them a little of it, or simply hand them over to the police.

Their face should t even appear online. Only hunger, I believe, pushes one to steal food, and I dont subscribe to treating one in such inhumane manner for attempting to rid themselves of their hunger by stealing a few stuffs. If the economy was good enough, I believe they wouldn't.

But stealing money or other valuables is a complete no no for me.

This is the most incomplete airline crash investigation report i have readhuh, it is like the airline and the investigators planned to totally blame the pilots.

Though the pilots are guilty as well, but the major ? is, what caused both engine to fail? In crash investigation, that is the first puzzle to solve, it wasn't stated and that isn't the pilot's fault, but the airline and their engineers. If the plane was in order, all these would have been avoided.
We take alot of things for granted in this country.
The cause of engine failure is irrelevant because when the first engine failed, the pilots should have requested for an emergency landing at the nearest airport!
But they chose to continue the flight!! That was extremely poor judgement which penultimately led to the fatal crash!
