Education › Re: Why We Look Down On Nigerian Graduates by Magjoel(m): 8:06am On Jun 16, 2017 |
ItuExchange: Only in Nigeria do people look down on Nigerians for schooling in Nigeria. Why?
I actually look down on myself for being a product of the Nigerian education system. I gained absolutely nothing and came out looking for nothing.
Universities are purely business oriented. An average school, for example, with the capacity to effectively educate between 5000 - 10000 students in different courses will admit between 30,000 - 50,000 students after screening 500,000 on the basis of an exam they all paid for.
How do you learn anything in a class of 600 with the capacity of only 300 students?
In my own experience, I hated finance, wasn't too good at it, but I did my best not to get less than a C on it. After the exam I believed I succeeded, only for me to go meet the lecturer to buy his book on the same day of the exam (I had one from a senior) because I learned from friends it's compulsory you buy his book, and the lecturer says you didn't buy my book so that's an “F”!!!….am like am here to do just that!!!!. He didn't care, didn't take my money but with pleasure failed me and a course mate who knelt down begging as I who stood with disgust. That's how easy you get failed. Most lecturers don't care if you learn, they just want money.
It's very easy in most schools to bribe a lecturer or school official. So most students do, even the brainy ones. Once the pressure is up, you just bribe(sort).
Most books written by lecturers are just copy and paste which makes their work look vague, empty, or difficult to read. It beats me how an average mind can seriously think he can learn something from a series of scrambled information.
Also, admitting more students than the school's capacity can bear makes registration, marking of scripts, file management etc. tedious for both officials and students. Valuable time needed for studying is totally wasted on such processes. Test and exam results get messed up easily, scripts get lost and that usually means failure/carry-over for the student.
I can go on forever about the system. So tell me, why shouldn't you be looked down upon for spending so much funds, time, and energy and still come out to a sad employment rate?
Only in Nigeria do people look down on Nigerians for schooling in Nigeria. Why?

Education › Re: What Did You Do To Be Self Dependent Financially As A University Student? by Magjoel(m): 9:34am On Jun 08, 2017 |
LieDetector: I've browsed through nairaland searching for information that would give me a hint as per the things I can do to be financially independent and control my life. I'll be finishing school this year from the faculty of education albeit still young. I would love to get myself a degree in a professional course like pharmacy. I don't intend to be sponsored by my parents but myself this time. I'm just clueless as to what I can do to achieve that feat. If I should decide to work with my degree in education, the options would be limited to teaching which isn't what I want at this time.
Your kind contributions would be greatly appreciated.
To the pharmacy students and licenced pharmacists out there, I understand how time is of immense importance to having a good pharmacy degree, however, I'd be needing your opinion as it relates to time management in my case. Do you think it's a feat I can pull? Thanks
Mods, you may be helping some other person out there get an education. you can start teaching so you will earn some money. |

Davedavy: I studied Industrial Chemistry in Nigeria, M.Eng in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology as well as M.Eng in Environmental Engineering from Europe. I have worked as a Quality Control Chemist, Manufacturing/Production Chemist, Environmental Chemist and presently work as a Process Engineer.
Chemistry is a very broad and interesting career. I really love the environmental aspect, if you love working in the field this is for you, you'll be involved in taking measurements, interpreting data, and using computers to model chemical fate and transport. Lab work is also involved you'll analyze chemical relationships or interactions.
If however you do not like outdoor and interacting with others, working as a quality control chemist or in r and d in the lab will be a better option for you. You'll need to have very good wet chemistry skills as well as ability to use most modern lab analytical instruments such as HPLC, karl fisher auto titrator, uv spectrophotometer etc. If you are in R and D lab, you will be formulating product prototypes and evaluating them for chemical and physical properties as well as scale-ups from prototype to commercial manufacture.
Manufacturing/Production chemist is also a very interesting career. As a production chemist, you are responsible for production of compliant, quality products. You'll need a very good knowledge of cGMP, good knowledge of production process, technical expertise on the manufacturing process, attention to detail and proactive behaviour.
Here in US, salaries for chemist typically start from $41,000 and go up to $125,450 while for a chemical engineer salaries typically start from $59,000 and go up to $157,160. Thanks very much, your post has inspired me |
