PropertiesRe: Any Architects In The House? by mahal(m): 6:14pm On Jul 06, 2009
Fredique:
I'm not sure what the roof was for. Whether it is symbolic or of specific function, I can safely assume that the reason must have been justified before the client considering the money that must have been spent on it.

I think another weekness in the architectural profession in Nigeria, is the lack of publications that critique structures. In the UK for example, Architecture Review, Building Quarterly and 'Planning' are published regularly to evaluate developments in the Built Environment. If such was available, probably the idea behind the roof (whether symbolic or functional) would be in the public domain. As it is now, only the architect knows, and maybe the clients and the other consultants involved.

I can confirm later from a reliable source what the roof was intended for. In case it is symbolic, I dont think there is anything wrong with it. it wont be the first time. An example is the roof of this hotel in Cardiff bay, UK
Well, the truth is, I kinda like it,
Nigerian clients ask a lot of question and may want to know the reason for everythin.
It seem this "innovative" or "symbolic" has become a trend especially in the 3 arm cities of Nigeria
Abj, lagos and PH. I intend to use it one of these days, but one have to be prepared with a line
or perhaps words of defense when it's queried, less my Boss would ask me his usual
mischievous question;"do you intend to fund that part of the project with your salary?"
The JBN main office is a good example too.

I know there's a real craze to turn Abuja FCT to a mega city comparable to J'burg and others
it is obvious the western influence seems to have placed everyone on his/her feet.
I still try to unravel the concept and architecture behind on this new FCT buildings; the NCC building,
especially in its roof design, Is that meant to be an antenna or sumtin huh
I still cannot trace the firm/architect behind this. Can any architect in the house help me unravel this? i need
to understand this building better than i do presently.

MUZBO:
All those guys at the helms of affairs do not think before they act thats why things like this happen. Who noticed that the logo of the EFCC features a BALD EAGLE- a symbol of the United States. This bird doesn't even venture to Africa,it is only found in North America yet we have it on EFCC's logo.
The EFCC logo intended to pass the idea of an " Eagle eye" it's symbolic."we are watching you, even from the farthest distance, " however, it seems the logo sef should be scrapped and substituted with the face OF JACK SPARROW the famous Pirate with one eye open and one Covered. The covered eye for friends of the Government and the Open eye for others. this would be more symbolic to the present EFCC.

Woodpecker:
the NIA is really to blame, all they're concerned about is how they'll keep young architects from competing with them for govt contracts by creating policies that only serve their selfish purposes
I shared such sentiment earlier, but the truth is, the younger ones get preoccupied with the chase of PP's and quick lucre soon
after school and fail totally in meeting little professional obligations required of them.
It should be noted that, It's the same rigorous exercise expected of every professional regardless of the feild.

iice:
Sure it is.

I don't even know how much appreciation people have for architecture in Nigeria.
Nigerians like good things, at times they aren't just informed.

This Niger Delta wahala exploded when some of the youths saw the Abuja Cityscape.

yoruba:
Hi everyone,
Im currently studying architecture in Johannesburg at the mo, I find these threads very interesting and informative(especially coming from my side of africa). The problem is I find it difficult to find contemporary stylish architecture from other parts in africa and news in terms general design etc. That's why i ask for anyone to post links or info on the latest developments in/or around west africa. I hope that one day, there could be a general discussion forum for architecture in africa.
Yours truly.

PropertiesRe: Any Architects In The House? by mahal(m): 11:54am On Jul 02, 2009
Maybe, i should start by saying, "We Architects are the Architects of our own misfortune"
We have done a terrible job of selling ourselves well enough to the Nigerian people
The profession is all about creativity, talent, perseverance and committment,
a whole of  people parading themselves today as architects, cannot really standout from
mere artists, draughtsmen or draughtsmen apprentices.
Why would a client be prepared to pay more for the services of an architect that cannot prove him./herself better
than a cheaper draughtsman?

However, i must not fail to add that, in recent times the awareness seems to be sinking in,
many thanks to the young generation of CG architects.

PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Declares War On Militants by mahal(m): 11:34am On Jun 27, 2008
The Shell P.D.C says it mined over 2million Barrels of crude oil per day in the late 90's and early 2000
at the moment, only a paltry 300,000 -500000 barrels of oil per day is mined mainly from offshore locations.
Shell PDC also says it has produced no drop oil oil from its Delta State field locations since 2005,
this in the long run, has caused a series of re-organizations and staff pruning exercises on a yearly bases.
Drastic and chocking Cost cutting measures have been employed to keep head above water.
More investment poured into off shore oil prospecting
to reduce or compensate the redundancy from shut-down land locations, at the moment
the militants have chased them into the sea crippling every offshore flow station or platforms
they come across.
The major (or even sole) economic support and source for the people of Warri, PHC and environs
are from the activities of Shell and Chevron. Hundreds of individual firms, consulting firms, Oil servicing companies, and support contracting firms, institutions, conglomerates in one way or the other benefit from The activities of these oil companies.

When the militants finally cripple these oil companies and the economy of this region and Nigeria as a whole
then some of us supporting President Umaru to fold his hand and watch would have a rethink
