EducationASUU Strike: Government/ASUU Reaches Compromise by majorgeeboy(op): 6:35am On Oct 17, 2013
Towards ending the ongoing
ASUU strike, the Federal
Government has committed to
spending N200 billion in the
2014 budget on the universities
as well as on each of the next
three-four years until the
universities are brought to
world-class standard. This is in
addition to the N100 billion
dedicated and already made
available for 2013.
The government has also
increased to N40 billion as a first
installment, funds for the
payment of earned allowances
to the striking lecturers, an
improvement from the N30
billion previously released.
This information is contained in
an internal Federal University of
Otuoke statement by Professor
Bolaji Aluko, its Vice-Chancellor,
seen on Wednesday night by
SaharaReporters.

dheaven: This ASUU strike is just nonsense because ASUU is more corrupt than Federal Government. Their big men is just looking for their own share of the National cake.
The reason Nigeria is bleeped up is because of people like you.

wesley80: Is that the only thing that should bother them? Do the so called leaders use Nigerian hospitals? Do they vacation in Nigeria? Are they at the mercy of kidnappers and robbers like other Nigerians? Do they rely on smoky and noisy i pass my neighbor gen sets to have power? Why arent labour leaders angry over all these also? Akika, is here again,
He goes on a journey every trimester
Sometimes half of a sunny year,
For years the teachers sought their pay
without a knife.
This time they hold the throat of the
government so high,
The student are at home begging their
fate,
Some have gone the market way,
Others the sailors way.
Parents are weeping their stocks are at
bid,
Akika meets with the government,
Each meeting is a deadline,
Akika is asking for thirty and hundred a
billion way.
The government gives the thirty a billion
way,
Akika raises the knife to slash a knife,
The government steps aside,
The student is cut.
Nigeria my fatherland when shall these
killings cease,
The independence is past three and fifty
we count this year,
Yet we sit on the gunpowder of
nothingness.
The future is dark,
As the schools of excellence are closed,
When shall the stars of your future shine,
Akika you are petulent child whose plate
must never be clean.
O you wicked government pay Akika so
he goes his way,
The last time you bought a shoe, the size
of my ancestors farm,
Pay Akika so your future will be bright.

PoliticsRe: Comparing Legacies - Obasanjo Vs Goodluck Jonathan by majorgeeboy: 3:44pm On Oct 08, 2013
Sincere 9gerian: Nonsense! You'r comparing legacies of someone who is just 3 years in office with one that completed 8 years? You'r confused.
point of correction. five years in office plus two years as vice president, making 7. but basically 5 years as president
PoliticsRe: ASUU Demanded For N3tn, Not N130bn by majorgeeboy: 2:17am On Oct 03, 2013
Raggedy_Ann: Not really....
The USA spends 5.5% GDP on education (2007), the UK also spends 5.5%, by 2009 south Africa was spending 5.4% GDP on education (don't know if that has changed). In fact by 2009, when this survey was done, only Sudan spent the UNESCO-recommended 25% ( the figure was 27.8%). They were ranked first by govt expenditure on education. The second placed Timor Leste spent 16.8%.

So you see, countries are at liberty to place their priorities themselves despite UNESCO's recommendations ( 'E' for educational, i'm sure WHO would not agree with this, health is important too are they going to demand 25% too?). Our guide should be statistics derived from our surveys: prevalent mortality, illiteracy, etc PLUS their effects on national growth, productivity etc. Maternal Mortality in isolation is definitely terrible but if the population is growing at such an astronomic rate that there is a battle keeping up with infrastructure ( not to mention the imbalanced ratio of women to men), then one would be tempted to push down the list of priorities 'improve health care' in favour of provide mass housing. This is just an example, the bottom line is: na pesin wey wear shoe na im sabi where e dey pain am.

If Nigeria now spends 8.43% GDP on education where we spent 0.8% in 1995, then it's evident we have recognized the importance of supporting that sector more. it will not be done overnight at the expense of other sectors ( they have to be weaned gradually).

N3tr might be more or less than what is required to revamp education in this country (personally i think the lack of infrastructure isn't so much the problem as faulty policies and corruption, the additional money could make zero impact on the quality of graduates produced) but we would never know until the Ministry of Education presents its case. This is beyond ASUU, on the matter of the collapse in the educational sector we are equal stakeholders and a bunch of University lecturers are ill-equipped to make reasonable demands. What's the plan? or are we going to decide that when the money comes?. Demands like these should be made out in terms of equipment, infrastructure and other requirements along with forecasts explaining how improvement would be achieved. They really should know better!
