PoliticsLagos Recruits 70 Female Truck-Drivers by MalasparkBlog(op): 10:30am On May 18, 2013
The Lagos State Government on Friday said it had just employed 70 women as truck drivers, as part of efforts to empower women in the state.
The Deputy Gov., Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, announced this at a news conference in Ikeja organised to mark Gov. Babatunde Fashola`s sixth year in office.

She said that the women had been trained on driving large vehicles before they were deployed to the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as waste truck drivers.
“We are also considering training and empowering women as Taxi drivers. We are currently examining some security risks that these women might face driving taxis.
“But we hope to partner with some hotels in the state on how we can attach some of these female taxi drivers to them, so that we can track who they are dropping off, in case there is a problem,“ she said.

Orelope-Adefulire, who oversees the Ministry of Women Empowerment, stressed that gender equality and women empowerment were top on the agenda of the Fashola administration.
She said the government had established a number of skills acquisition centres across the state, saying that thousands of women had acquired trade skills at such centres, to set up their businesses.

The deputy governor added that women entrepreneurs who were in need of tools and equipment for their trades had also been assisted by the government with such needs.
She said the government, through the ministry, had facilitated micro-credits for small-scale business women, to assist them grow their businesses.

Orelope-Adefulire said the government was making steady progress at attaining the 35 per cent Affirmative Action with the appointment of more women into top positions in the state.
“Though we are yet to attain 35 percent Afirmative Action, we are aggressively working towards it.Today. we have more and more women occupying top positions in government.
“68 judges, 92 magistrates and 52 Permanent Secretaries is a indeed progress. We are still working harder and we will surely surpass the 35 per cent target at the end of the day,“ she said.

The deputy governor, however, decried the growing cases of domestic violence in the state, saying that the government was taking appropriate steps to control the trend.

PoliticsWe Didn't Think Chinua Achebe Is A Human Being But Just a Spirits - David Mark by MalasparkBlog(op): 8:23am On May 16, 2013
Senate president stated this in a deliberations on the death of the literary icon, on a motion, titled “Death of Professor Chinualumogu Albert Achebe”, sponsored by Senator Chris Ngige, ACN, Anambra Central, and other senators.

After various contributions from senators to the motion, Senate President, David Mark, who presided over the plenary, said given the mood of the people on the issue, everybody was delighted to talk.

Mark said: “This is a motion that all of us were very delighted in moving today and it is a motion that all of us would have contributed if I had allowed everybody to contribute. For those who did their West African School Certificate Examination after 1966, they will remember Chinua Achebe very well because I think 1966 was the first year that Things Fall Apart was used for WASCE. “I recalled that before then, it was Shakespeare and the whole lot and nobody believed because at that time, we didn’t think that Chinua Achebe was a human being. “We didn’t see authors and writers at that time as human beings; we thought they were just spirits or people that imagine things. That was the impact he had on Nigerians and at very early age. That was the level of impact he had on Nigerians. But it is very difficult to pay tribute to a man like Chinua Achebe because there is hardly anything you can say that will befit or you can express that will befit the way you ought to say it.

“But nevertheless, this is one of those occasions that we thank many Nigerians and I believe many of us here would have loved to express even much more than what we have done but we are not Chinua Achebe, so we cannot express in very simple term, very vividly the way he used to express things. “He was a role model for the youths and for the elders alike. He was a fearless, courageous and very forthright Nigerian. He was a patriotic Nigerian who took Nigeria to the highest possible level. He lived well ahead of his time. He was as positively controversial as he was progressively controversial.

“His body is dead but his work will live forever. His use of simple language to express those complex situations very vividly has never and can never be matched by any writer in this country.
“He was a detribalized Nigeria, a nationalist to the core and a nationalist to the best. He was a gallant and sincere Nigerian and the most befitting fare-well, tribute or burial that can be given to him is to ensure that things do no longer fall apart in this country and that he is at ease where he is. And he will remain at ease forever.”

PoliticsSenate Urges FG To Grant Achebe State Burial And Name Monument After Him by MalasparkBlog(op):
THE Senate yesterday urged the Federal Government to grant the late novelist, Professor Chinua Achebe, a state burial and name a major federal highway or street in Abuja after him.

It also urged the government to name a national monument after him to portray the fact that Nigeria, as a country, and Nigerians appreciated his positive contributions to the country and world through his literary works.
As part of honour for the literary giant, the Senate announced a high-powered delegation, led by Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, to commiserate with the family, people and government of Anambra State on the demise of Professor Achebe, as a minute silence was observed for him.

Resolutions of the Senate came after deliberations on the death of the literary icon, on a motion, titled “Death of Professor Chinualumogu Albert Achebe”, sponsored by Senator Chris Ngige, ACN, Anambra Central, and other senators, during yesterday’s plenary.

In the motion, read by the lead sponsor, Senator Ngige, the Senate said it was saddened by the death of Professor Achebe whose “glorious exit occurred on Thursday, March 21, 2013, in Massachusetts, USA, after a brief illness at the age of 82 years.”
Of the six prayers listed in the motion, only the call for aposthumous award of the Grand Commander of the Niger, GCON on him was rejected on grounds that he had rejected several of such honours while alive, in spite of efforts by some senators to push for that.

In his presentation of the motion, Senator Ngige noted that the late Achebe was a world figure and personality who brought fame and prestige to Nigeria and humanity through his literary talents and works, having written several novels and essays, some of which became instruments for his dogged and dynamic activism ultimately seeking a better life for all Nigerians.

He said: “The Senate observed that he was also a social critique, an activist-poet, a principled personae, who denied himself several personal accolades while he marketed and exported Nigerian and African cultures to several other continents.”
He said Achebe’s life had been exemplary and worthy of emulation and, therefore, needed immortalization, having made Nigeria proud by bringing honour and prestige to the country, regretting that his demise was a monumental loss to his family, people of Anambra State, Nigeria, Africa and the world over.

“Achebe was a patriot who loved his country. He criticized governments when they had not done well. He was an activist of prodigiousintensity, very courageous and spoke truth to power. He refused national honours in 2005 and recently on another occasion because, according to him,he did not believe things were good enough as to dine with the governments that offered such honours,” Ngige said

CelebritiesIsabella Barrett: Youngest Female Millionaire by MalasparkBlog(op): 1:44pm On May 10, 2013
Former Toddlers and Tiaras star Isabella Barrett is a millionaire at the age of six, thanks to her impressive beauty pageant record, TV appearances, and her own jewellery and make-up line.

And the young entrepreneur has developed the lifestyle to go with her riches, telling the Daily Mirror all about her expensive taste in food, clothes and shoes.

'What’s not to like about being a millionaire?' she told the paper. 'I’m a superstar, I have my own jewellery line and I just love being the boss. I never lose at anything and almost every pageant I enter, I win. But what I love more than anything is shoes. I have over 60 pairs.'

Isabella relishes room service at extravagant hotels. 'We travel so much to enter pageants, she really has developed a taste for five-star hotels and loves being waited on,' said Susanna.

'She can go a little crazy though and once ordered $2,200 worth of food. It’s never cheeseburgers and fries, always the most expensive like filet mignon and lobster.

'I know it seems pompous, but to us it’s just funny and part of her personality,' she explained to the Mirror.

Isabella has made most of her money from the Glitzy Girl collection, which features lip glosses, charm bracelets and velour hoodies. The idea for Glitzy Girl came about during Isabella's pageant days.

Every time the Rhode Island native won a beauty contest, she and her mother would get the title printed on a charm bracelet, 'so she could brag about her accomplishments,' explained Mrs Barrett in and interview with In Touch.

Since fans loved the look of her charms, Isabella and her mother took advantage of her popularity and launched the line.

Most the money they make from the line is spent on clothes and shoes. 'I’ll admit when it comes to Bella’s wardrobe, there is no expense spared,' said Susanna.

'That means a voice coach, make-up artist, regular spray tans, hair extensions, acrylic nails and even made-to-measure fake teeth which cost us $500.'

SportsThe Real Reasons Sir Alex Ferguson Retired As United Boss Revealed by MalasparkBlog(op):
Sir Alex Ferguson always said hewould carry on as Manchester United manager as long as his health permitted him to do so.
So, when the United boss was informed he would require a hip replacement this summer –it proved the beginning of the end of his remarkable Old Trafford reign.

The procedure will leave Ferguson needing up to three months of recuperation and, with the prospect of missing the start of United’s title defence at the start of next season, the 71-year-old heeded it as a message from his body that it was now time to call it a day.
Despite insisting the operation was planned for after United’s pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, the lengthy recovery period meant the Scot being back in the dug-out for the start of the new season was a fanciful notion.
United’s willingness to confirm that Ferguson was to undergo hipsurgery raised fresh doubts over whether he could feasibly continue in the role, given the lengthy recovery period involved, despite the club’s insistence it would not affect his ability to carry out his duties.

Ferguson even confided in one loyal journalistic ally at the weekend that the imminent operation would have no bearing on his future as United manager, while his departure was being carefully orchestrated and stage-managed behind the scenes.
The plan had been for Ferguson to break the news to United fans after Sunday’s home game against Swansea, when the club will be presented with the Premier League trophy for the 13th time following their latest championship success.
But when news leaked about Ferguson’s potential departure late on Tuesday, the Scot and United were forced to bring forward the announcement of his intention to stand down after the game at West Brom on May 19, his 1,500th in charge of the Reds.

Unlike when Sir Matt Busby stepped down in 1969, leaving anageing squad behind that was eventually relegated in 1974, United have no such concerns following Ferguson’s imminent departure.
In many ways, the robust shape of United’s current squad, with the right blend of youth and experience, has made it easier for Ferguson to stand down now, safe in the knowledge his successor, David Moyes, is inheriting a formidable group of players.

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly,” said Ferguson. “It is the right time.
“It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.
“The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.
“Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.”

There were other key factors, aside from the onset of age and his hip problem, that combined to convince Ferguson this was the right time to end his 26-and-a-half year tenure at United and hand over control of United to Moyes.
The imminent departure of United chief executive David Gill, as well as that of Ferguson’s brother Martin, the club’s European scout for 16 years, provided Ferguson with the perfect exit strategy, on top of the uncertainty over his health.

The United boss had considered quitting at the end of last season, but was persuaded to stay on and win the Premier League title back from Manchester City after losing it such galling fashion on goal difference with virtually the last kick of the campaign.
Ferguson was determined not to end his time at United on a low note and made the decision to stay on and reclaim the domestic title, as well as having one last crack at joining former Liverpool boss Bob Paisley as the only man to win three European Cups.

That dream was dashed with United’s last 16 exit to Real Madrid, which left Ferguson too distraught to attend the post-match press conference at Old Trafford, knowing that his final shot at another Champions League triumph had gone for the last time.
But with the objective of re-asserting United’s domestic dominance achieved, set against the backdrop of his ailing health and the loss of two key allies in Gill and his brother, Ferguson knew this was the moment he had to step down and entrust the future of the club to his successor.

There had been whispers that Ferguson was considering his future at United in the aftermath of United’s latest Premier League title win, which they clinched with four games to spare with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on April 22.
On Tuesday, it emerged Ferguson was ready to call it a day, but it was not until he called his players to a meeting in the changing-rooms at the club’s Carrington training complex on Wednesday morning, that his exit was confirmed.

Sports"Sir Alex Ferguson Is The Greatest Manager In Football" - David Beckham by MalasparkBlog(op):
David Beckham has hailed"father figure" Sir Alex Ferguson as the greatest manager in football, after the Scot announced his retirement on Wednesday.

The former Manchester United midfielder, who spent a decade under Ferguson at Old Trafford, said he would not have achieved such success without the 71-year-old's influence.

Beckham said: "As I have said many times before the boss wasn't just the greatest and best manager I ever played under he was also a father figure to me from the moment I arrived at the club at the age of 11 until the day I left.

"Without him I would never have achieved what I have done in my career. He understood how important it was to play for your country and he knew how much it meant to me.

"After '98 without the manager I would have found it virtually impossible to cope with the attention I was getting on and off the field and for this I will always be grateful to him for his support and protection.

"I am truly honoured to have been guided by the greatest manager in football and to have had the career that I had under him.

"Thank you boss and enjoy the rest!"

SportsDavid Moyes Set To Replace Sir Alex Ferguson By The Of The Seasom by MalasparkBlog(op):
Manchester United to name Everton boss as Sir Alex Ferguson successor

Goal.com understands that the recently crowned Premier League champions are set to confirm that the Toffees manager will take over at Old Trafford at the end of the seasonThe Everton boss is expected to be announced as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson, who revealed on Wednesday morning that he is stepping down at the end of the season.

Sources said that the United players learned at the club's Carrington training ground today that Moyes is the man who has been lined up to take over from Sir Alex.

Everton have said that they have not been approached by the new Premier League champions to negotiate Moyes' release but it is understood that the Scot has agreed a deal to take over at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old will have to resign from his post at Goodison Park to complete the formalities of a switch to United but he is out of contract at the end of the season and the process is set to be a swift, smooth and amicable one.

Moyes is a long-time friend of Sir Alex and the pair are set to enjoy a close relationship next season, given that Sir Alex is moving upstairs to join United's board of directors.

It is believed that Moyes has been personally cherry-picked by Sir Alex ahead of a number of Continental managers with proven European credentials.
The decision would then have been ratified by the United board, including the Glazer family, who own the club, and current chief executive David Gill, but they are believed to have been comfortable with Sir Alex having the biggest say in the identity of the man who takes his seat in the dugout.

A close circle of senior United figures have kept the plans shrouded in secrecy to avoid a repeat of the situation in 2001-02 when Sir Alex felt the team were destabilised after he announced his intention to retire at the end of the campaign, only to later change his mind.

It's only the 5 loudest nairalanders that care to degrade themselves and trap themselves in contempt by trying to attack one of Africa's greatest men to defend a politician who isn't known outside of Nigeria and in 60+ years of living didn't change life for Nigerians what so ever outside of giving them someone to vote for (though when given a chance to vote, they chose another over him).

Achebe has changed to course of African history. He has made it possible and normal to write about africa and an african. Something that seems and sounds so normal to us didn't exist before him. There was always a western context that we had to see ourselves from. If it wasn't demonizing ourselves, it was falsely praising ourselves and over playing our 'glory' by linking ourselves to things the west values.

then came a man who wrote of honorable Africans than did dishonorable things at times like any human beings. He wrote honestly about the ills of his own culture as well as it's values. He gave us a context to see ourselves and with his knowledge, immortalized some of Africa's greatest traditions by putting them down on paper for the world. In my high school in America, it is standard requirement that students read Things Fall Apart once they have reach an advanced level in the 11th grade (SS3 i believe). The day before the book reading starts they are made to learn how to pronounce the names in the book.

there are 4-5 people on Nairaland that place politics above humanity and their only understanding of progress is having someone from their group of 10s and millions of people get a government post and send his children abroad to school and wife abroad for surgery. Politicians don't represent progress in Africa and Achebe has presented something greater for and from Nigeria than independence it's self. Freedom of the mind. Ownership of our narrative and our history. Ka chi gozie ndi oma.[/quote]He is dead he lives on.... RIP
CelebritiesLady Gaga Vomits On Stage During Live Concert (photo) by MalasparkBlog(op): 4:59pm On May 07, 2013
First it was Justin Bieber blaming too much milk, now it is Lady Gaga who vomited several times on stage during live concert, according to video published to the internet.

The pop star vomited several times on stage during a concert over the weekend in Barcelona, Sunday, uploaded video appears to show. Lady Gaga was performing "The Edge of Glory", with a backup dancer when she seems to lose her lunch three times. Gaga, now in London, had a laugh at her expense on Twitter: "Was praying no one saw this, but it is actually quite a good laugh if u need one, an exit Lady PukeGA doing Swan!"Vomit "Lake".

The "Born This Way" singer is not the first singer to vomit on stage. Justin Bieber vomited during a concert in Glendale, Arizona, in late September. The 18-year-old Justin Bieber, blamed the incident on drinking alot of milk. PoliticsFmr President, IBB Threatens To Expose former Head Of State Buhari’s Corruption by MalasparkBlog(op):
Former President Ibrahim
Babangida has threatened
to expose the corruption
of Former President
Mohammed Buhari
especially as relates to his
tenure as Minister of
Petroleum.

Buhari was appointed
Minister of Petroleum in 1976 under the
Murtala/ Obasanjo administration.
Not much is known about
any scandals that occured
during his tenure as
Minister, but there are
rumors of the mysterious
disappearance of US$2.8
Billion from the NNPC
account in Midlands Bank
in the United Kingdom,
during Buhari’s
stewardship.

Now that IBB has
threatened to expose him, it lends a certain
credibility to the rumors
indicting Buhari of grand
graft. Babangida who released astatement through his media adviser, Prince Kassim Afegbua said, “On
Gen. Buhari, it is not in
IBB’s tradition to take up
issues with his colleague
former President. But for
the purpose of record, we
are conversant with Gen.
Buhari’s so-called holier-
than-thou attitude.
“He is a one-time Minister
of Petroleumand we have
good records of his tenureas minister.

Secondly, he also presided
over the Petroleum Trust Fund( PTF) which
records we also have. We challenge him to come out with clean hands in those two portfolios he headed. Or, we will help him to expose his. “records of performance during those periods.

Those who live in
glass houses do not throw stones. Gen. Buhari should be properly guided.”

CelebritiesDon Jazzy Shuts-down Pop Nightclub by MalasparkBlog(op): 3:13pm On May 05, 2013
Months after opening his night club, PoP, in Victoria Island, MavinCEO and ace music producer Don Jazzy has shut it down.
Heard he shut down the club down after realizing running a music label is different from running a night club.

Also heard PoP was shut down because it wasn't making money as expected. Heard some people will show up at the club just to take photos with him and leave. Also, some important people will buy drinks and not pay. Naija people sef. Lol. Well, he has shut the club down to concentrate fully on his music label.
