There was anxiety in Enugu State yesterday over the rumoured death of the state governor, Sullivan Chime, who allegedly is receiving treatment for cancer in a foreign hospital.

There were widespread reports yesterday that the governor passed on in India on Wednesday.The social media was a wash with the report throughout yesterday. Even aides of the governor could not confirm the where abouts of Chime as they kept mute on the death rumour. Though normal activities went on in the state, but stakeholders were anxious about the governor’s health even as some dismissed the rumour, saying it was the handiwork of Chime’s political enemies. Some said they were unaware of the death rumour.

When our correspondent visited the Government House yesterday, it was observed that security was relaxed from the point of entrance unlike how it was when the governor was around.
The governor’s media aide shied away from making official statements on the ground that they cannot continue to react to the governor’s death rumour almost on daily basis. But state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Ozor Joe Mammel, who was furious upon inquiry about the rumour, said there was nothing to it as it was the work of his detractors. Mammel said the governor travelled to Abuja on Wednesday, noting however that to the best of his knowledge, Chime is alive. He wondered what benefits those wishing him dead want to derive from such. He said if Governor Chime had died, it would be announced through the appropriate channel other than the social media which he said anybody could post whatever story to achieve personal ends.

Chime had earlier admitted that he is suffering from nasal cancer for which he had been treated in a London hospital for five months.Chime was also recently reported to have gone for a three-day medical checkup last in London even though the state government denied that he travelled out of the state. But after his return to Enugu a little over five months, precisely on February 8, 2013, the governor addressed a press conference some days later to explain that he was treated of nose cancer while away. The tension generated by his long absence was therefore subsided. But there had been rumours of his travel again on account of his sickness, which his aides always dismissed.

Governor Kayode Fayemi of EkitiState yesterday condemned the 45-year jail term handed down by an Oshogbo High Court to 31-year-old Kelvin Igha Ighodalofor stealing a phone.
Fayemi wondered why a phone thief could be jailed 45 years where as culprits in N12 billion pension fund scam were freed.

This, he said, showed the kind of justice system in the country. The governor, who said “offences must have commensurate punishment,” demanded that “those who steal the nation’s resources should be made to facethe full wrath of the law”. Speaking during the 2013 May Day celebration in Ado-Ekiti, Fayemi said although he did not want his phone stolen, there was no way a phone thief could be sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment in a country where plea-bargaining was in existence to bail out the affluent ones.

The governor, who disclosed that politicians and influential Nigerians who stole the country’s resources were being released by courts courtesy of criminal justice administration, said the phone thief was supposed to be made to buy the phone and face commensurate punishment for the crime.
He said: “I am not saying that stealing of a phone set is good, but the dispensation of justice should not be to give privileges tothe rich people.”
An Osogbo High Court had on Monday sentenced Ighodalo to 45years imprisonment without an option of fine for stealing a Sony Erricson phone valued at N50,000 belonging to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola on November 27,2010 and impersonating the governor to defraud some individuals.
The governor threatened to move against workers that engaged in partisan politics in the state, saying such civil servants should resign their positions. Fayemi, who said some civil servants had been carrying out political activities unabated, said such workers would be held accountable for their conduct when apprehended by appropriate authorities.

The economic policies of the Federal Government have been described as unfavourable to the Nigerian people by the Labour Party.

The party, on Tuesday in Abuja, also warned that with the way the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was handling the economy, Nigeria might not be able to fulfil her promise of employment generation.

The National Chairman of LP, Mr. Dan Nwanyanwu, who was Speaking when the Inter-party Advisory Council led by Dr. Yunusa Tanko paid a courtesy call on him, also warned politicians, especially opposition parties, to desist from insulting President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said, “The way the economy is being run by the coordinating Minister, Okonjo-Iweala, will not create the kind of development we need. The way she runs it will not give employment to Nigerians.She must change her tactics because her policies are hurting the economy.
“All those economic politics will not help Nigeria. All those economic policies are not helping Nigeria and I think with the away the Coordinating Minister is running the economy, we may not be able to generate the employment needed.”

While warning political leaders, especially those in the opposition parties on the need to desist from hauling abuses at the president, Nwanyawu suggested that IPAC should call a meeting of all political parties “and look for a means of addressing issues, try and fix a meeting with the President.”

According to him, abusing Jonathan unnecessarily would not earn Nigeria respect in the comity of nations.
He said, “We’ve political leaders, who wake up and just abuse the president. Our president is the most insulted, most disrespected and abused in the history of Nigeria.”

Authorities in Newtown, Conn. said they found a home filled withas many as 300 one-gallon jugs ofurine on Friday, according to the Danbury News Times.

The state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection stumbled upon the discovery after local health officials asked the agency to investigate.
DEEP condemned the house and the owner could face charges, though that’s unlikely, according to WTNH.

Dennis Schain of DEEP, said he was confident the urine belonged to the owner, whose name has not been released.
“From our conversation, it seemed that he was responsible for putting the containers there,” Schain said. “It’s most unusual. Our crews have been out over the years, and they are having a hard time recalling something like this.”

A woman who suffered from a severe itch inside her ear shocked doctors when it was discovered that a living spider was the reason behind her itch, according to reports in the news media.

Doctors in China performed a spiderectomy on the woman who had a spider living inside her ear for several days. Photos taken at the Central Hospital of Changsha show the creepy spider inside the ear before being removed.

The central Changsha woman was now understandably complaining to doctors about an itchy left ear, according to reports.

Doctors determined that the spider was probably living in the ear canal of the woman for up to five days. They believe it got into her house as it was being renovated. Docotrs filled her ear with saline hoping it falls off without causing the spider to bite the woman or dig itself in deeper. The plan worked and the woman reportedly wept with gratitude

Prior to the Boston Marathon Bombings, President Obama spoke on NBC's "Today" show about what he would do if his daughters ever wanted to get a tattoo.

According to what Obama said, if his daughters Sasha and Malia are thinking ofgetting a tattoo, they best reconsider. "What we've said to the girls is, 'If you guys ever decide you're going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo, in the same place, and we'll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.'" Obama said.
"Our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that's a good way to rebel."

During the segment, the president also talked about how he understood his wife's "slip of the tongue" when she called herself a"single mother" in early April, noting that they were often apart for weeks at a time when he was campaigning for the Senate and presidency.
"I tend to cut my wife or anybody some slack when it comes to just slips of the tongue," he said. "But there's no doubt that there have been times where Michelle probably felt like a single mom … She definitely, I think, understands the burdens that women in particular tend to feel if they're both responsible for child rearing and they're responsible for working at the same time," he added.
