ekt_bear: I watched the first 5 minutes of the first episode on Netflix, found it hella boring. I guess I'll give it another shot.

Braun is a frikkin beast. Love that guy.

Btw, Tywin Lannister? He was somewhat underdeveloped in the book in my opinion. But really shines in the TV show.
Felt the same way about the prologue of the first book. Now, I only put the book down when my vision becomes blurry (which is quite often)

Have you finished the books? Martin manages to write into such intricate detail about the most minute things. Can't way to catch up with the show.

lordZOUGA: I do not get what your point is. Are you saying bash is not part of Linux? This is a high level discussion. You do not expect me to worry about what happened in a compile level environment. But then every Linux distribution that has bash installed also has all those other utilities installed. yes?. If so, I am not wrong. And I still don't get what your gripe with what I said is.
At the highest levels of discussion, the point would be the same. Bash is not a part of Linux any more than Skype is. Nothing to do with the hosted environment, or platform. Linux distributions also come with Mozilla Firefox, this doesn't make Mozilla Firefox a part of the Linux sub-system either. My gripe is with the fact that you seem to have hopped on a bandwagon, furthering your unsubstantiated claims by saying "can Windows do this, or that, or this? No! Linux can", where it isn't really a Linux issue. Nor was Linux the subject matter of the question at hand.

If for whatever reason, you want bash on Windows, get win-bash or mingw. You aren't comparing terminal emulators, you're comparing operating systems with a baseless argument that holds no water, and doesn't even do much in way of the operating systems you're referring to.

lovely, then i will like to start it that way. So whats your way in of the matter. ok, now thats fine, and that way, i dont need to learn a new language all becos of algorithm, i can just used any language i know to implement, as far as i understand the algorithm.
Depending on the problem you're trying to solve. One could use a fork as a can opener, but it would probably make for a horrible can opener.
Christianity EtcFaith. by malign(op):
A lot of the time, I find that people believe in the gods that their parents believe in, who believe in the gods of their parents, and so on. (Sometimes, this isn't always the case.)

The very same people often defend their religions with no real basis other than "I believe in God. How can you say there is no God? What's wrong with you? Atheism is 'cool' these days. You'll go to hell.", at the same time strutting interesting ideas that their invisible man in the sky might be better than my invisible man in the sky, at doing invisible sky-man things, so much so that they could kill me in the name of their invisible man in the sky, because they believe my invisible man in the sky is lying. And if you don't believe in my magical man in the sky, who so loved you that he gave his only begotten son (a long, and winding matter that I don't intend to get into), he'll let you burn in fire, and misery, and shame, and destruction, and torture, forever and ever, and ever, and ever, until the end of eternity, even if you're truly good, in a world where so many people do "good", only because they expect reward for it, and not because they're really even "good", at all.

And then there's the idea of evolution. And how preposterous religious fanatics find the idea of us being evolved from the same descendants as the chimps. Asking people that are agnostic, "so you believe we have the same lineage as monkeys?" in a half curious, half mocking way. Where empirical evidence suggests it. I suppose the argument that God made a man out of clay, in a garden, and a woman out of a single limb of that man, who ate some fruit on the recommendation of a talking snake, then got plunged unto Earth, to bleed once a month as punishment, much more reasonable. It's interesting that this garden draws some parallel with that of the idolistic Sumerian religions that came before it.

I understand that the world is too "perfect" to be an accident, and people seem to struggle with the idea that the assumed chaos of the big bang could possibly create such perfect order, but one must ask, "is it perfect?", even on Earth, with our hurricanes, and volcanoes, and meteors, and tsunamis, and droughts, and plagues, and the fact that the Abrahamic God destroyed the mankind he so loved, more than once. (see things like Genesis 6:13).

How did you develop faith in your religion? Was there some moment, with strobe lights and revelations? Or do you just believe because it's "safe" to, because there isn't a "risk" to believing? Because it's easier, and less scary than the idea that there isn't one?

Ultimately, I'm really interested in developing faith, I might have a knee-jerk approach to it, but I know that there's more than just me. I sometimes obsess about Islam, and Buddhism (without the live nude girls and the mysticism), but find that, after flirting with religion, and religious doctrines. After reading Islamic scriptures, and Christian scriptures, and Tibetan Canon scriptures, that they all seem to rely on a premise that can't be proven, nor disproven, a lot of the time with a misogynic, vengeful, jealous, childish super power running the entire operation.

As an aside, it's probably only right to note that organised religion has caused more pain, more deaths, and more hatred than any government, or criminal syndicate. By submitting this, I've quite possibly offended, and insulted a great many people, but I'm just really interested in how you manage to have faith in something so fundamentally broken.

I seem to have babbled on with my thoughts slap-dashed here and there, and I'm not sorry for it, I suppose I had a lot to let out.
Art, Graphics & VideoMy First Ever Painting. by malign(op): 1:29pm On May 19, 2013
So, sometime last month, I decided to buy canvases, some paint, brushes and an easel, and began to paint.

This was the first painting I ever did. Give me your criticisms.

Also, seeing as how I'll be coming to Nigeria soon, I wondered about the best places to go to buy acrylics, and canvases in Abuja. Are there any communities tailored to this specific sort of art?

I heard learning programming between age 25-30 is waste of time because people at that age cant grasp these launguage mentally as their brains are wreak lol... So anybody close to 30 cant learn programming? My friend is interested but this is what he said he heard.

He is reading this . So guys, whats your take?
This holds no water. Whilst children assimilate things like sponges, and adult minds are more rigid to learning new things (consider real world languages, sports, mathematics), I don't think it's very difficult to learn how to program. Programming, like most other disciplines require deliberate practice. And, whether a child, or an adult, 10,000 hours of deliberate practice should put you in a very elite league.
ProgrammingRe: I Want To Learn Programming. Which Language Should I Start With? by malign(m): 1:18pm On May 19, 2013
ibnquasale: are u suggesting that i start with C++?
C++ started out as an extension to C. It rapidly became something of a red-haired stepchild by expanding so much so that one can't really "learn C++" in its current entirety.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a first language. Languages, like Python, Ruby, then Prolog, Scheme/Lisp are ones to look out for, seeing as how they'll teach you certain good programming practices, and tend not to overwhelm in the way that C++ does.

There's so much documentation out there for all of the above. Most of all, just enjoy it.

dansmog++:
now i understand what you guys are saying ,,, but the thing is : is it not possible to learn algorithm without a partivular language? Then i can implement anything i want to in any language?
You can, but in order to apply them to a problem-set, you need some sort of syntax. You could use flow-charts, and pseudo-code if you want a rounded understanding, that you can later translate into some sort of programming language; and more often than not, this is how programming is generally taught in a lot of universities.

At this point, you might really enjoy reading The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. Probably want to wander through it before other books (it's freely available here, http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp)

lordZOUGA: The Bourne again shell is Linux and its functions are tightly integrated with the Linux kernel. the argument was about what the bash does powershell can't do and I can do all those stuffs with bash without installing a thing. Can powershell do all those things I listed? No it can't.

Please if you are interested in arguing about the finer details of Linux commands and SUSE standard revisions, please start another thread and I will join you.
Bash is not "Linux", I don't think I even understand what you mean here. Bash is not "tightly integrated" with the Linux kernel, whatsoever. The incorrectness of what you're saying is beyond my most primitive levels of comprehension, really.

You should look into mingw, before saying incorrect things any further, about the "stuffs" one can do on Windows.

Bin/core-utils are installed, usually merged with the distribution installer. It has absolutely nothing to do with bash, the Linux kernel, God, or the flying spaghetti monster, even.

I'm not interested in arguing the "finer details" with you, you should instead pick up a book and try to learn a little about what you think you understand.

Good luck.

P.S. By "SUSE standard revisions", I think you mean SuS, (the single UNIX specification; and nothing to do with OpenSuSE) which Linux has never been a part of.
ProgrammingRe: Please i want to learn algorithm And Data Structure by malign(m): 6:25am On May 19, 2013
The biggest problem here is that which a novice must learn data structures and algorithms, in conjunction with a language model. So, there are different approaches to learning how to implement one thing, against a stream of various syntactical models and paradigms.

You should definitely pick up something concerning "logic and proofs" initially, a quick search would show you more than enough resources on that front.

Look into the works of Donald Knuth. He's written more volumes on ds/a than you could hope to need through your programming career.

Take a look at this. http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-006-introduction-to-algorithms-spring-2008/index.htm. It's an open course at MIT, on Algorithms.. You're expected to know some Python, which can be achieved by reading through this http://docs.python.org, the language is a little large, but you'll pick it up easily enough. Be sure to browse through some of the others.

Here's also a decent (free) ebook on ds/a. http://dotnetslackers.com/projects/Data-Structures-And-Algorithms/

I learned mostly in C, and using Robert Sedgewick's "Data Structures and Algorithms in C", but I wouldn't recommend it for a first language to anyone.

Happy learning.
ProgrammingRe: What Can I Do With Command Prompt? by malign(m): 6:05am On May 19, 2013
lordZOUGA: Alright.
-bash offers a better user experience than windows powershell. You can click a link in bash. I am not sure that can be done in powershell. Bash has more customizable features than Windows. You can change bash's background color, size and startup variables way easier than it can be done in powershell.
.
Clicking links in terminal emulators must be the final frontier in innovation. The terminal opacity, size, and colour has nothing to do with "bash", this is easily one of the most incorrect, and insane statements I've ever seen in my life.

lordZOUGA: -bash has more commands than powershell like the "tar" command that compresses a file, the "grep" for text manipulation and the "nano" command that lets a user create and edit text on the command line.
I think you need to rediscover what you understand `bash' to be, seeing as you've clearly managed to re-create what it is, in your mind.

Bash has a small set of "commands", all the surrounding mechanisms have next to nothing to do with bash itself, and are a part of GNU's core/bin-utils. So, grep, and tar, and nano have about as much to do with bash as Google Chrome has to do with Windows 8. In your criticisms of Windows, you failed to do some much needed research. Labouring under the assumption that you can't do file compression (see 7zip), or have grep-like behaviour (see findstr /?), or all of the above using things like mingw is one you ought to correct before making ridiculous statements in public.

lordZOUGA: .-bash offers a better security when executing code on the command line by using "su" or "sudo" to grant super user privileges to an executing code. Powershell let's you do whatever once you launch it as administrator.
Again, `sudo' isn't part of "bash". Your argument against Powershell is flawed.

Also, I wouldn't need to look too hard before finding worrying scenarios where "bash" security is questionable, see things like: http://thejh.net/misc/website-terminal-copy-paste

I really don't know what you base your opinions off of. People seem to create largely invalid opinions of things once they hop on to a bandwagon.

lordZOUGA: I am going to stop here. Too tired to type
I hope some sleep helps you.

ProgrammingRe: [Opinion] B.sc Computer Science In Nigeria? poo! by malign(m): 7:19pm On May 18, 2013
angelchyke: Sometime ago, last month, a friend of my in the Computer Science came by my place, to visit and you know, "shack garri". AFter he was done, satisfying the whims of his belly, he told me that he just doesn't get. They had been given an assignment in PASCAL programming. This is a guy that started learning programming privately, with C#.

But if I should throw this to the Nigerian community here on Nairaland, what do our universities have to offer us in the study and research of computer science. PASCAL? Can they favourably compete with the foreign counterparts in the other universities. Naija guys and girls abroad, your unprejudiced judgements will go a long way,
Your point of view is naive at best.

Regardless of where you get your degree, you're ultimately on your own until you decide to put the hours into deliberate practice. A lot of us that have bachelors in CS spent hours a day ploughing through documentation we cared for, and applying/subverting the technologies we learned whilst doing so.

You shouldn't so much care about the language you learn. That is wholly irrelevant. Where some languages teach good/bad practices, the medium you're hoping to garner understanding from is the logic behind the design of data structures, and algorithms, and not so much syntactic models of C#, or Python, or Ruby, or Haskell, or Lisp. That's important when you require a mechanism to tailor your specific requirements. Some make this easier for specific needs than others.

Ultimately, a large proportion of Universities teach most things in this specific field, poorly. With poor programmers at the helm. If you want to do well, expand by learning on your own, making your own mistakes and learning from them yourself, instead of keeping up with the syllabi of Universities you don't attend that may or may not contribute to creating better programmers.

Chxta: Register at www.shipit.ubuntu.com, they would send you a free CD
Used to do this in 2006, shipped a pack of five CD's right to my doorstep in Abuja twice a month, which I shared amongst friends, but the general interest in Linux at the time was minimal at best. Glad to see it's gained momentum over the years.

I was in talks with some developers circa 2010, about having aggregated mirrors hosted in Nigeria, so that it may help with package control, (apt/aptitude, et al), seeing as how horrible an experience it was to sync gentoo portage, and so on back then. It never kicked off, however, in part due to the small fact that Nigeria didn't have a large enough user-base.

Might be time to re-evaluate that.

First we will follow ourselves on Twitter and make sure we stick to this re-tweeting arrangement. This could ensure a wider reach of audience for our blogs and raise our social status on Twitter. If possible, we could also extend to Facebook. All we need to do is submit our blog URLs and Twitter handles here. Do you think this will work? My blog is at www.wetinhappen.com and my Twitter handle is http://twitter.com/aniekanekah
So, in essence, co-ordinated spam. Brilliant.
