They got married in Napa Napa Valley, Calif., on Saturday May 7th. Lauren is an international business-management doctorate student. Congrats to them.

WHEN GRANDPARENTS ARE THE ONES PAYING THE SCHOOL FEES.....

Special greetings CPE Members. Trust you had a wonderful week. I think I have missed my regular Saturday posts, so I need to get back. Too many issues arising at the same time and I just could not stop reflecting on this . During this week alone more than four Ladies told me...Yinka, you need to know how many grandparents are paying the school fees of their grandchildren ..whilst still on that , another lady stated ...please please, some are even still paying their house rent even after years of marriage.
I took a deep breadth and began to wonder ..it's so easy to get into a situation like this. I remembered when we started out with no single furniture except a funny looking table. We had no TV,,,but fortunately we did a save to own with one very kind Electronic store nearby and finally proudly acquired a 20" or 21" Toshiba Television. We sent our children to schools within our income.

Now, i am being told things are different, we need to support them. I fully agree we must support. Where does it stop ? Where does it begin. Are there ground rules. I certainly do not have the answers, I am asking myself when I become a grandma, would I be tempted to do the same because I want my children to go to that dream school I wanted for my own children and could not afford. Or would I be strong enough to allow them live their own lives and live within their income.
Is this an Elitist problem. Grandparents footing all the bills and making sure they maintain the lifestyle they are used to.
We are living in unusual times and dynamic times. The rules are changing but my question remains Should grandparents be responsible for the Education of their grandchildren( not on a short term basis), Is it a responsibility that augurs well for the development of all concerned...
My friend's daughter jokingly told me " the problem Mummy is that we are used to AC ...you can't now tell us to step down" Hmmmmm. I can't but sigh.

I sincerely hope our very experienced Mums and Dads would share their thought on this

l am worried as a would-be because some private schools have continued to exploit parents by forcing them to buy different uniforms for their children for the week in the name of "Monday, Tuesday. ....Friday Wears".
A colleague's son is in a private school in Lagos and just last month, his school had its inter house competition when parents were forced to buy another sportswear. They were told to dispose off the ones they have using at the beginning of this session for Friday wear and continue to wear what we bought for the inter - house sports competition.
Of course, all these must come with different shoes for the week. He said, he know how much he has spent buying different shoes for a growing child because he (child) had been purnished several times for wearing the wrong shoe for a 'particular day's wear'.
Just last week Friday, I saw a school whose pupils wore customised/branded ankara , as Friday wear.
Is this a form of Internally Generated Revenue ( IGR) for schools involved or exploitation !

While Nigerian investors were busy reducing their holdings, these Foreign Direct Investors are thinking of increasing their holdings for strategic purposes.

Thank God they lost out with their bid in GSK and Unilever. Nigerian investors will not want a repeat of what happened with Nigerian Bottling Companies, whereby the core foreign investors delisted the company from the Nigeria Stock Exchange after acquiring 75% of the company. But the company did not deem it fit to exit the Nigerian consumer market, Nigeria Bottling Company products like Coca cola, Fanta, Sprite etc are still in top demand in the Nigerian market but Nigerian investors are not good enough to invest in the company.

There is something about the Nigerian economy and market, which the average Nigerian investor does not see.

I see these guys at GSK and Unilever, coming up with another trick in order to corner the wealth and future growth of these companies through through the raising of foreign denomination reversible corporate bonds. That was the strategy used by the foreign investors of Cadbury when they wanted increase their holdings about 18 years ago.

Nigerian shareholders largely shunned a N43 billion share-acquisition bid by Unilever Overseas Holdings, United Kingdom aimed at acquiring a quarter of Unilever Nigeria’s shares to increase the multinational’s majority equity stake in the Nigerian subsidiary to 75 per cent.
The latest audit of Unilever Nigeria, scheduled to be presented to the company’s general meeting on May 12, indicated that Unilever UK’s total shareholdings in Unilever Nigeria only increased by 8.49 per cent from 50.04 per cent to 58.53 per cent after the conclusion of acquisition bid. Besides, Unilever UK had resorted to mopping up the shares of Unilever Nigeria through the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
Unilever UK now holds 58.53 per cent, 16.47 per cent short of the 75 per cent, through two holding companies-Unilever Overseas Holdings BV Holland, which holds 50.04 per cent and Unilever Overseas Holdings BV, which holds 8.49 per cent. Nigerian investors retain 41.47 per cent shareholdings in Unilever Nigeria.
“The total shareholding of Unilever Overseas Holdings B.V. increased to 321,395,410 following the Tender Offer to other Shareholders of Unilever Nigeria Plc and open market purchases made during closed periods in 2015,” according to the audit.
The Nation’s check indicated that Unilever UK holds a total of 2.214 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each out of Unilever Nigeria’s total issued shares of 3.78 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each. A breakdown showed that Unilever Overseas Holdings BV Holland holds 1.89 billion shares.
Under the extant laws, a 75 per cent equity stake would have given Unilever UK the overriding majority equity stake to undertake several strategic transactions including mergers, acquisitions, new capital issues and other major corporate changes with little or less resistance from Nigerian shareholders.
A shareholders’ leader who spoke to The Nation said they mobilised against the acquisition bid because Nigerian shareholders felt the bid was not fair and in the best interest of Nigeria. The shareholders’ leader cited shareholders’ resistance to similar move by GlaxoSmithKline UK, which was forced to abandon bid to acquire overriding majority equity stakes in GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria by acquiring shares held by minority Nigerian shareholders.
Unilever Overseas Holdings, the United kingdom-based foreign core investor in Unilever Nigeria, had in first half of 2015 sought to increase its majority equity stake in the Nigerian subsidiary from 50 per cent to 75 per cent, citing long-term strategic importance of Unilever Nigeria to its global business.
In a transaction initially valued at about N43 billion or £144.5 million, Unilever Overseas Holdings sought to increase its equity stake in the Nigerian company from 50.04 per cent up to a maximum of 75 per cent by buying additional shares from minority shareholders. The tender offer sought to acquire about 942.42 million ordinary shares in Unilever Nigeria at a price of N45.50 per share in cash.
In a statement signed by Richard Hazell, Director, Unilever Overseas Holdings B.V, Unilever had said it was making the additional share acquisition as part of long-term strategic plan by the conglomerate as it believes that Nigeria offers significant growth potential.
“The Unilever Group has had a major presence in Nigeria for many years and continues to believe that the country offers significant growth potential. This makes Nigeria a strategic long term investment priority for Unilever Overseas. Globally, the Unilever Group is focused on investing in the foods, household and personal care categories and the long heritage and great brands of Unilever Nigeria in these categories in Nigeria make it attractive for Unilever Overseas to increase its holding in Unilever Nigeria, whilst maintaining its stock exchange listing,” Unilever stated in the statement enclosed in the tender offer.

FYI the money shared by the states are the revenues/income paid into the federation account, local govt IGR, states govt IGR are not paid into that account.

All these money Lagos generates should make that city better than its current state. The slums are still covering a larger area than the brushed up places.

The money is not much. An IGR of N100 billion in the first quarter of the year, will translate to about N400 billion at the end of the year.

N400 billion to be used for the 20 million people in Lagos is about N20,000 per head.

Government need to drag more Lagosians into the tax net, while some of us are heavily taxed in fore of income tax, withholding tax, land use tax, development levy etc, we still have up to 80% of the taxable residents who are not paying their taxes.

The fund or income that goes to the federation account for sharing by all tiers of government are the following.
1.IGR by Federal government
2. Value Added Tax, Corporate tax, capital gain tax and other duties, levies and tax by the Federal Inland Revenue Services.
3. Income from the customs and excise dept, NNPC, NPA.
4. Income from sale of crude oil and other exported products.

FIRS generated a toatal of N4.6 Trillion in 2014, and VAT contributed over 15% which is about N690 billion.

Businesses and consumption in Lagos State contributed about 50% of the N690 billion VAT, which is about N345 billion.

The N100 billion IGR of Lagos in the first quarter does not include VAT or corporate tax.

Meantime, the state government generated N101.69 billion revenues in the first quarter of year 2016 appropriation year, even as it had secured $100 million about N19.7 billion loan from the French Government to upgrade slums in the state.

Lagos borrowed the loan from World Bank, but with a guarantee from FG. Meaning FG can use Lagos State monthly allocation to pay the loan, if Lagos defaulted.

N100 billion generated by Lagos is about $500 million, which is about $2billion in a year, but I doubt if Lagos current debt exposure is up to that amount.

Please educate yourself, Lagos State got funding through bonds from the Nigeria Stock Exchange, becuase of my confidence in Fashola I also invested in the Lagos State bond.
Lagos got loan from the world bank for some specific project like drainage, flooding control, infrastructure etc.
African Development Bank was established to fund states and govts who meet up with their minimum standard.

Our leaders need to start from somewhere, we need forward thinking leaders in Nigeria.

The Lagos that was the Federal Capital of Nigeria, was just 5% of the current Lagos. The federal capital included Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Ebute metta, Yaba, part of Apapa, and some parts of Surulere.

The boundary of Lagos and Western region toward Ikorodu road was Jibowu, the boundary towards Victoria Island was Maroko, while there was another boundary at Ajegunle Apapa, that area is still known as boundary till date.

Awolowo established Industrial Estates at Ilupeju, Apapa, Matori, Isolo, Ikeja, Ogba, these Industrial estates are still present till date, he established Agricultural settlements at Oko Oba, Lekki, Ajah and some places in present Lagos State which used to be under the Western region.

Western region through Odua Investment, invested heavily in companies like Guiness, Nigeria breweries, Vita foam, WAPCO, Nigeria Bottling corporation, Nestle, Cadbury just to mention a few. Unfortunately subsequent military governors mis-managed the investments of Odua.

Odua governors are current having investments and economic summits, they are also thinking of collaboration, instead of waiting for a FG, i think our governors need to take their destinies into their own hands.

LASAA is compulsory for advert and publicity, local goverment have certain taxes, dues and rates which they collect from businesses.

Dangote also has the highest debt in Nigeria if not in Africa, yet financiers are still willing to loan him more funds.

There is no big deal on the size of your debt provided you are capable of servicing it as at when due, what matters is your credit rating and I guess Lagos has one of the best ratings among the states in Nigeria.

This year, my income has come down to 10% from what I used to make. My office rent is 800k per year. I have a female worker I pay 25k monthly. My technician received 10% of whatever comes in weekly. I pay service charge of 35k monthly. I project making at least 100k weekly. When I couldn't make it, I came down to 50k. Now, I barely make 10k weekly.
Yet, lasaa, firs, lirs, local government levies etc are all over me.
I am speechless. How do you explain this?

Business owners are the one suffering the increase in income by LASG. The new Chairman of LIRS may end up killing small businesses in Lagos. I just got a letter from LIRS for my PAYE tax audit from 2009 to 2014 and I was billed a tax liability of N2.6 million, eventhough I paid my income tax as at when due.

I have written them, challenged the tax audit and made additional payment of 30k, waiting for their invite in 4 to 6 months time so as to compare notes and records.

LASSA collects about 50k per annum for advert, land use charge is about 100k per annum, PHCN is about 500k per annum, local govt papers for my buses is 40k, vehicle license and insurance etc is over 100k. Land use charge is also over 100k per annum.

Do not be surprised if Lagos makes more than N100billion in the current quarter, because prosecution of tax defaulters will commence in the quarter.

This just an average of N50 million per director, which is not too much. I think we need a break of what each bank spent. FBNH spent over N1billion on the directors in 2014.

Nnewi is 1000 times richer than Anambra. Yes Nnewi is richer than Nigeria, I concur. I also read and learnt that Nnewi is richer than West Africa.

This is just one of the few examples of how a part can be bigger/richer than the whole.

I suggest you leave your region and visit other regions in Nigeria and then confirm to yourself if the non indigenes in Lagos aren't investing in their land too.

Are you a chest beater? My post if for the chest beaters who claimed to own and developed other lands, just admonishing them to replicate their purported feats and exploits in their own region.

Charity for normal people begins at home and not from abroad/foregn lands.

I think charity begins at home, but to the chest beaters it appears charity begins in a foreign land.
