LASTMA has no right to drive impounded vehicles’ September 26, 2012 by Agency Reporter Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, on Tuesday said officials of the State Traffic Management Authority had no right to drive impounded vehicles. Opeifa made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos. He said, “It is unlawful for LASTMA officials to drive vehicles that contravened the law, except the arrested motorist resisted arrest or has no drivers’ licence- which is the only guarantee for any driver to be on the road. “We have been hearing reports of our men driving arrested vehicles. In the course of driving the vehicle, if there is an accident, the officer involved will be held responsible. “My advice is that when a vehicle is arrested, the offender should cooperate by coming to Alausa to redress the issue, which at times, after scrutiny, the offender may be allowed to go without any punishment.” He also advised LASTMA officials to stop chasing unruly motorists, but rather, book their vehicles. The commissioner explained that such vehicles could be traced to the owner’s home with the newly introduced automated vehicle licensing and renewal system, also known as AutoReg. President was deceived on N5,000 note – Rep September 26, 2012 by Segun Olatunji, Abeokuta A member of the House of Representatives, Taofeek Buraimo, on Tuesday, said President Goodluck Jonathan was misled by his aides on the proposed N5,000 currency. Buraimo, representing Remo Federal Constituency on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, also declared that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Lamido Sanusi, were out of tune with the reality of the Nigerian economy. Speaking with newsmen in Sagamu after a meeting with ACN leaders in the area on his proposed N250m constituency projects, Buraimo said Jonathan erred by allowing the CBN governor to mislead him into endorsing such “an economically unsound action.” He said, “Honestly, the President just acted cowardly because everybody knew that we were talking about a cashless society and now, you were introducing the use of N5,000 notes, for what purpose?” He noted that the understanding of the economy by the two top ranking officials of the Federal Government should be of a major concern to the citizenry. The lawmaker said, “I always say that for the likes of Sanusi and Okonjo-Iweala; it’s not about where you have studied or that you have been at the World Bank. NSNA: Bakassi or no Bakassi, Africa is AfricaGuy u are just saying that cos it doesnt affect u directly. He who wears the shoe knows where it pinches him. This is no great deed by OBJ, but a wicked deed by him! I'm sure if this issue arose in the west, he won't have given in so easily.
