Leona Lewis was stuck in Nigeria yesterday after blasts killed at least 12 people in the country’s capital, Abuja.

Two car bombs went off in the hours leading up to a celebration to mark 50 years of Nigerian independence. The X Factor winner was in the city to perform at the event and her hotel was not far from the crime scene. According to reports, the star and her entourage “felt the entire building shake”.

Leona’s performance was cancelled and the Bleeding Love singer issued a statement paying tribute to those who had been killed. "Out of respect for those victims, it is with regret that I have had to postpone my performance."

It’s thought the bombers were from a militant group that deliberately timed the attacks to coincide with the festivities. One man has been arrested in connection with the blasts.

As of last night, Leona still hadn’t managed to fly home and was holed up in her hotel in Abuja with her tour manager and friends.

A student has been jailed for 18 months for falsely claiming a cleaner had raped her – so she could get an extension on her university coursework.
Temitope Adenugba was struggling to meet a deadline at Oxford Brookes University, when she phoned police saying she had been subjected to a serious sexual assault as she slept in her hall of residence.
When officers arrived to take a statement, the 24-year-old pointed at cleaner Kunle Ogunmola and said: ‘Can’t talk here, that’s the man who raped me.’

Mr Ogunmola was arrested, before police exposed her claims to be ‘a catalogue of lies’.
Oxford Crown Court recorder Rabinder Singh said: ‘It’s extremely easy to make an allegation of rape when there’s no foundation whatsoever.
‘But it’s likely to have the perverse impact of guilty men walking free.’
Mr Ogunmola had no access to Adenugba’s room – and mobile phone analysis debunked her claims he had harassed her with calls. Further analysis showed no DNA link to support her claim. In court, she admitted perverting the course of justice over the fake claims made in May of last year.
The court heard she had made another false rape claim against a previous partner in October 2006.

Walter Scott, mitigating, said his client had made the claim against Mr Ogunmola after an earlier false allegation of harassment against the same man ‘didn’t have the desired effect of extending her time to do her coursework’.
He added: ‘She was not seeking to directly attack the victim – he was chosen rather arbitrarily.’
But Det Ch Insp Colin Paine said: ‘It caused significant distress to the man accused.’

Ever since November 23, 2009 when her husband was hurriedly flown out of Nigeria to treat what his personal physician described as acute pericarditis in Saudi Arabia, Turai has been in the news.



But apart from her late husband‘s spokesperson, Segun Adeniyi, who described her as ”a warm, caring, not-in-your-face woman who wants her husband to succeed and who is eager to ensure stability on the home front and leverage her moral power for the greater good of the society,” and a few other cronies, Turai has attracted more of negative news than positive in the last few months.

The burial of the remains of former President Umaru Yar’Adua was almost marred by violence on Thursday as hostilities broke out between youths and security agents at the gates of the Katsina Township Stadium.



Trouble started when the security agents manning the gates tried to prevent the youths from entering the stadium to witness the burial which was not attended by the newly inaugurated President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.



Angered by the attempt to stop them, the youths went on the rampage, hauling missiles at the soldiers and policemen who in turn threatened to shoot them.

THISDAY, however, gathered that some names have emerged as top contenders for the coveted position.
