PoliticsPDP: Incumbent Reps Lose PDP Primary In Edo by manuch(op): 1:12am On Dec 07, 2014
Two serving members in the Federal House of Representatives on Saturday failed to clinch the tickets to contest the 2015 election into the lower chamber during the Peoples Democratic Party primary held across the nine federal constituencies in Edo State.

Although the scene of the primary in some of the venue was peaceful, with presence of security operatives, the exercise, however, did not begin until about 11:30am in most of the constituencies.

The member representing Esan West, Esan Central and Igueben federal constituency and Chairman House Committee on Power, Mr. Patrick Ikhariale; and Mr. Friday Itulah, representing Esan South East and Esan North East.

Ikhariale scored 20 votes, another aspirant, Mr. Felix Agbabue had 39 votes while Mr. Joe Edionwele got 64 votes to emerge the party’s flag bearer.

Two-time lawmaker and member, House Committee on Federal Capital Territory and the Millennium Development Goals, Itulah, lost to Mr. Sergius Ogun’s 55 votes, having scored 31 votes.

In Oredo federal constituency, Mr. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihiama secured the party’s ticket with a total of 23 votes, while Mr. Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma won in Ikpoba Okha/Egor constituency.

Other winners include Lawrence Ogieva (Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode), Bankole Balogun (Akoko Edo) and Johnson Abolagba (Owan) while Abass Brama defeated Hussein Garba by one vote to emerge winner in Etsako federal constituency.

Omosede Igbinedion, daughter of the Esama of Benin kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, was declared winner of the primary in Ovia federal constituency.

However, three of the aspirants in the contest, Etinosa Onaiwu, Osayemwenre Edosa and Kelvin Aigbe, have protested the emergence of Igbinedion in the primary held in Iguobazua.

The aggrieved aspirants, in a petition personally signed by them and addressed to the State Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, described the primary as “unwholesome and wanton disregard for the democratic process.”

They alleged that Igbinedion was imposed on them by leaders of the party from Ovia North East and Ovia South West and the Edo South Senatorial Leader, who suppressed their last-minute consultations with the delegates.

The three aspirants, who were not seen at the venue of the primary, explained that they decided to boycott the exercise because “to participate in a process which outcome has been pre-determined will be fruitless and giving legitimacy to the imposition of a candidate and the coercion of delegates.”

Although the state chairman could not be reached for comments, the Chairman of the PDP National Assembly primary in the state, Olusola Oke, told newmen that the primary was orderly and described all the aspirants as winners.

On her part, Igbinedion, told journalists that no one was coerced in the primary.

While appealing to the petitioners not to be aggrieved, she said, “Although no one was coerced to back down, I will appeal to them not to be aggrieved. I will definitely visit them.”

Politics2015: Ogboru Emerges Labour Guber Candidate In Delta by manuch(op): 9:52pm On Nov 30, 2014
Chief Great Ogboru, a governorship aspirant of the Labour Party (LP) has emerged the party’s flag bearer for the 2015 general elections in Delta.
NAN reports that Ogboru was unanimously voted as the flag bearer at the party’s governorship primaries held on Saturday in Asaba.
Mr Carlistus Okafor, LP Deputy National Chairman, South and Presiding Chairman of the primaries, declared Ogboru the soul candidate during the contest.
According to Okafor, 23 governorship aspirants collected form to contest the position under the party.
“Out of the number, eight returned their forms; three were disqualified, leaving five aspirants to contest the primaries.
“However, four of the contestants later withdrew and had accepted to work with Ogboru as the soul candidate for the primaries of this great party.”
He said that the party had implicit faith that Ogboru would deliver in 2015 and urged the people of the state to support him.
Ogboru, who responded after collecting the LP flag for the governorship race, thanked all who supported him in the struggles in the past and pledged to deliver.
He said that the party was ready to fight again but for the last time to clinch the number one seat in the state in May 29, 2015.
He promised to deliver good governance, adding that the state had not, by any way, experienced what good governance was since its creation.
According to him, the battle line has been drawn and there will be a difference in the agitations and struggle to get the power.
“This is the peak of the battle and the last battle that we have to fight; we fought before and we won but they said we did not win.
“The Labour Party does not discriminate but we judge people by the content of their character and this time we are going to labour for victory.
On his part, Mr Fred Obey, Director-General, Ogboru Campaign Organisation, thanked the party and the stakeholders for giving Ogboru the mandate to contest the governorship position in the state.
He promised to work assiduously to win the election in 2015.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the party, Abdulkadir Salam, told NAN that the Delta’s primary election was a peculiar one since the party had postponed the exercise nationwide.
He said Ogboru’s victory in Delta would make “great impacts”, especially in the lives of the people at the grassroots level.
SportsGhana Lose Appeal Against U-17 Disqualification by manuch(op): 9:28pm On Nov 30, 2014
Ghana have lost their appeal against the disqualification of their team from the 2015 Under-17 Championship.
The Confederation of African Football upheld its decision to penalise Ghana for fielding an over-aged player, Isaac Twum, against Cameroon in a qualifying match.
Ghana won the 13 September first-leg tie 2-1 and went on to record a 6-4 aggregate victory.
But Cameroon protested and Caf disqualified Twum.
It declared the player, who represents the junior side of Kpando Heart of Lions, had failed a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test which was taken to determine his age.
As a result, Cameroon advanced to the finals.
The Ghana Football Association have decided not to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

PoliticsPDP Screens 43 Governorship Aspirants by manuch(op): 10:02pm On Nov 23, 2014
Forty three PDP governorship aspirants in the South-East were screened to contest the 2015 governorship election in the state, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd), the party’s National Vice Chairman in the zone, has said.
Akobundu told NAN in Enugu on Sunday that the exercise was successful as the aspirants conducted themselves as expected.
On the N1 million screening fee paid by each of the 43 aspirants, Akobundu said the money should be seen as “party dues”.
He said the aspirants were expected to have paid their dues earlier. “The aspirants only paid their party dues.
“Party dues are collected everywhere for aspirants wishing to contest elections at the state Houses of Assembly, the House of Representatives and Senate.
“Party chairmen from different states demand the money from the aspirants and remit same to the zonal office,” he said.
Meanwhile, NAN gathered that the 43 aspirants were yet to collect their certificates of clearance from the screening committee.
Some of the aspirants screened by the committee included Chief Emeka Ihedioha, deputy speaker, House of Representatives, Sen. Chris Anyanwu (Imo) and Sen. Ayogu Eze (Enugu).

PoliticsPresident’s Wife Shuns Dickson At Jonathan’s Birthday. by manuch(op): 9:28pm On Nov 21, 2014
Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, tactically avoided the Bayelsa State delegation, led by Governor Seriake Dickson, who came to rejoice with the President on his 57th birthday in Abuja on Thursday.

No member of the National Assembly from the state was also on the delegation.

There has been no love lost between the governor and the President’s wife over an alleged plan by Mrs. Jonathan to stop Dickson from being re-elected as the state governor.

The PUNCH had reported exclusively on Thursday that Bayelsa senators and members of the House of Representatives at the National Assembly had joined forces with the First Lady against Dickson.

The report had it that the federal legislators had formed a strong alliance to counter the moves by the governor and his loyalists to re-elect them in the 2015, through zoning, allegedly orchestrated by Dickson.

The report added that the aggrieved lawmakers had backed the moves by Mrs. Jonathan to replace Dickson with her loyalists in 2016.

The President’s wife who attended the first event to mark her husband’s birthday earlier in the day was conspicuously absent during the visit of the Bayelsa delegation about two hours after.

Jonathan, however played down his wife’s absence while thanking members of the delegation for the visit.

He simply said his wife “left” without disclosing her whereabouts.

“On behalf of my wife who just left, I sincerely thank you the governor, the government and our traditional rulers and our brothers and sisters from the state who have done this,” he simply said.

Dickson had earlier told Jonathan that the delegation was in the Presidential Villa to show their solidarity, support and love to him on his birthday.

He also said contrary to reports, Bayelsa State was united, stable and peaceful.

The governor later told State House correspondents that he would not dignify those claiming that there is a rift between him and the President with a response.

Earlier, President Jonathan had agreed with those campaigning for the removal of immunity clause from the nation’s constitution, saying some people do not merit it.

According to the nation’s Constitution, the President, Vice President, state governors and their deputies enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution.

But Jonathan frowned on a situation where those who enjoy immunity abuse the privilege by making statements, he said, were capable of threatening the country’s survival.

He said, “If there are people making statements, threatening the survival of this country, especially some people who probably have constitutional immunity and are abusing that privilege.

“That is why most Nigerians are saying that immunity clause should be removed, because some people don’t merit it, since they abuse it.

“Some people are making remarks that are more or less treasonable. Don’t be worried, nobody can upturn this country.

“This country must continue and we will not give up to blackmail by anybody. We will do our best and Nigeria must survive this temporary setback like Boko Haram and other security challenges.”

Jonathan reiterated his position that despite the challenges being faced by the country, Nigeria would not disintegrate.

He said although the road might be rough, other nations had passed through such rough roads.

“Let me use this opportunity to reassure our people and all Nigerians that yes, as a nation, we have our challenges. Yes, it is rough, other nations have passed through such rough roads.

“I always said that I don’t know whether the State of Isreal have ever known peace for one day, but they are moving, they are developing.

“Go to America today, most of the millionaires are Jews, but they are always fighting to survive. So, that we have challenges should not be misconstrued that the country will come to an end.

“We will surely overcome those challenges and this country must move forward, this country must unite,” the President declared.

Before the Bayelsa delegation’s arrival at the Presidential Villa, some family members, friends and aides had on Thursday morning joined President Jonathan to celebrate his 57th birthday.

The birthday was marked with a short holy communion service inside the President’s official residence at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The service was officiated by his Chaplain, Ven. Obioma Onwuzurumba.

Jonathan, joined by his wife, Patience, and his mother, Eunice, later proceeded to cut his birthday cake.

SportsFit-again Reuben Gabriel Ready To Succeed With Boavista by manuch(op): 9:59pm On Nov 10, 2014
Nigeria international Reuben Gabriel is hoping to rediscover the form that once drew comparisons with former Arsenal player Patrick Vieira.
Gabriel wants to re-establish himself as a top European player with new club Boavista in a bid to take a leading role for club and country.
For the past year the all-action midfielder has been hampered by a lingering groin injury which also forced him out of the Nigerian squad for the 2013 Fifa Confederation cup in Brazil.
He eventually returned to full fitness to participate in the pre-World Cup friendly internationals and also made a late substitute appearance for Nigeria against France at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Gabriel, who has been omitted from the latest Super Eagles squad to afford him time to sort out his club career, is happy that his injury days are now behind him after making his debut for Portuguese side Boavista last weekend.
"The groin injury was difficult, but as a professional you must continue fighting to regain fitness quickly. It now seems that rushing to return to fitness only made things worse for me but I never gave up till I recovered because I'm a born fighter," Gabriel told BBC Sport.
"I endured a lot of challenges but my family and my agent stood by me and supported me all the way to ensure I fully recover from my injury problems and continue to enjoy my football.
"I'm now fully recovered and ready to show fans at club and international level what I can do."
The 24-year-old was a member of the Super Eagles squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in February 2013 but he was prevented from playing after being struck down by chicken pox.
However, two months after the team's success in South Africa, Gabriel joined Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock Football Club.
After suffering a hamstring injury and struggling to settle down in the Scottish top flight, he terminated his contract with Kilmarnock at the start of 2014 following a series of disputes with the club.
He then decided to join Belgian Jupiler League side Waasland-Beveren despite the prospect of an offer from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. He had been training with Spurs and had begun discussions to join them and then be loaned immediately.
A short stint at Waasland-Beveren was rewarded with a place in his country's squad for the World Cup in Brazil.
Gabriel, who is greatly admired by Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, has quietly gone off the international radar but is now convinced that his fitness is much improved.
"I'm in great shape now. Groin injuries can be very troublesome and frustrating but I visited one of the best groin specialists in the UK and everything is now fine. I thank God for that.
"I'm enjoying my football here in Boavista. We have a very good team and our coach is great and encourages us all the time. I'm ready to fight with everything for my club and hope to establish myself as a top player in Europe."
Gabriel played his first game for Nigeria in 2010 and scored his first goal for the Super Eagles two years later in Blantyre which secured a 1-1 draw against Malawi in a 2014 World Cup qualifier.
He was named man of the match against Rwanda in Nigeria's qualifying campaign as the West Africans secured a second consecutive appearance on football's greatest footballing stage.

PoliticsI Know How To Defeat Jonathan In 2015 -okorocha by manuch(op): 8:42pm On Nov 04, 2014
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State said in Kaduna on Monday that the mission to rescue Nigeria from what he called the “inept leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party” in the 2015 general elections rested in the hands of Nigerians.

The governor believed he was the only one that had the capacity to defeat President Goodluck Jonathan if given the opportunity by his party, All Progressives Congress to be its flag bearer in the 2015 presidential election.

Okorocha, while speaking at a rally organised by a northern group, Arewa Peoples Grand Coalition, to urge him to pick the presidential ticket, said of all the APC presidential aspirants, he stood the better chance of defeating the PDP candidate(Jonathan) and other contestants in the race.

He noted that none of the contestants had ever provided free education in the country or in a state, stressing that he had over the years provided free education in some parts of the country, adding that he would provide same all over the country if he becomes the President.

Earlier, Okorocha had visited the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, and laid a foundation for Rochas Secondary School in the emirate, which he said would be free.

Okorocha, who spoke both Hausa and English languages, said, “I am the only candidate that can dislodge the PDP in the 2015 presidential election. Tell me of all the people who are eyeing the presidency, how many of them have provided free education.

“There is a need for a change in Nigeria, it is a must, and it must happen. The change has become necessary in our country.

“I believe that if I fly the flag of APC, definitely I will bring victory to APC in 2015. I am the only one who can defeat PDP without struggle. No PDP candidate can face me in the other parts of the country. We don’t have problem with PDP, our problem is how to choose the candidate that can defeat it.
