SportsKalu Offers To Save Nigerian Football by manuch(op): 7:24pm On Jul 08, 2014
AS the crisis in Nigerian football continues, former Governor of Abia State and one time presidential aspirant, Orji Uzor Kalu has declared his readiness to sacrifice his political ambitions to save the dwindling fortunes of Nigerian football.

Kalu, who made this known during a chat with the media Monday in Abuja, regretted that the fortunes of football in the country has continued to nosedive, even as the government has given more financial backing to the development of the game.

He stressed that what the sector requires at this time is a person with clout and strong financial background that would not look at the avenues of enriching him selves at the expense of the development of the game.

He noted that rather than the administrators of football in the country to focus on measures that would move the country to greater footballing height; it has continued to cause international embarrassments to the country over trivial issues like players’ bonus.

Kalu noted that FIFA has no reasons to sanction Nigeria over the decisions of the extra ordinary congress of the NFF, adding that if the decisions were taken in line with the provisions of the NFF and FIFA statutes, it stands to be ratified and approved by the world football governing body.

“I have to take time to appraise what is happening in Nigerian football because I have not been around for sometime. But I believe that what is right is worth doing well. If the leadership of Nigerian football is deemed not fit to manage the affairs of our football, they should be changed.

“What we need now is to reform our football because the level of our football has passed this entire struggling thing we are doing. FIFA must understand our position if we do the right thing by effecting the change. But I would not support the effort if it is done out of politics.
SportsFear Of Ban: NFF Stops Committees’ Inauguration by manuch(op): 7:00pm On Jul 08, 2014
World football governing body FIFA on Monday stopped the inauguration of two strategic committees purportedly set up as the country now awaits a ban following government’s direct interference in the running of football.
The inauguration of the electoral and appeal committees purportedly set up by an “NFF congress” on Saturday was stopped by FIFA.
The event was scheduled for 2 p.m. at the FIFA Goal Project Technical Centre in Abuja, but it was hurriedly called off even after all arrangements had been concluded.
However, an official who has been involved in the developments of the past few days told AfricanFootball.com: “I gave them a professional advice to suspend the inauguration of the committees. It will now hold on a later date.”
He further said: “Government is interested in this matter.”
FIFA have given Nigeria till today to reinstate the Aminu Maigari-led NFF executive committee or face a ban from international football.
The African U-17 qualifier involving Nigeria and DR Congo billed for July 20 will be the immediate casualty of a FIFA ban as four-time world champions Nigeria will be walked over in Kinshasa were the ban to be in place.
The country’s female U20 team have jetted out of the country, but they would also not feature at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Canada were a ban in place.
The Super Eagles will begin the defence of their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title in September.
Meanwhile, the Jos High Court, which sacked the NFF executive committee and congress last week, will begin hearing on a case initiated by the wife of former premier league boss Rumson Baribote on Friday. The NFF have already put their legal defence.

You are a waste of space and a disgrace to Okigwe zone. You have no consitutional right to 'continue your tenure' because you were voted out of office. Your utterance in this interview confirmed to all that you are a stark illiterate. Mr ohakim, your downfall was as a result of arrogance and stupidity. You aligned yourself with people who do not mean well for imo state and ignored the wise counsel of people who tried to reposition your government. Those that brought you down were your friends in government who I believe today are no longer in talking terms with you. You are not an intelligent politician and the earlier you realise that the better for you. If your so called party decide to field you in 2015, Rochas will unfortunatley have a field day. He has beaten you before and he will beat you again. I think your party are wiser than you and will not touch you even with a very long stick.
PoliticsOhakim Regrets His Actions As Governor by manuch(op): 8:56pm On Jul 01, 2014
The immediate past Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, has pleaded for forgiveness from those he offended during his tenure as governor of the state.

He said he had forgiven those who offended him during the course of his administration.
Ohakim made the appeal yesterday while playing host to the people of Okigwe who called at his country home to urge him to respond to their call for him to complete the tenure of the zone, as his services were still needed in the state.

According to the former governor, those he offended included the sacked school teachers verified by the state government, the operators of illegal shanties on the major roads in the state, the banned commercial motorcycle riders, among others.

He pointed out that he thought he was doing the right thing but expressed surprise that during the campaign for the governorship position in the state in 2011, the incumbent governor used it against him to get himself to power. On the purported flogging of a clergyman, the former governor maintained that his political detractors used it as a campaign strategy to edge him out of government house, maintaining his stand that he never assaulted any clergy, as he was vindicated by the said victim.

“I apologise to the street traders, the school teachers who underwent a verification exercise and were not cleared by the panel, even though it is sad that most of them are campaigning for the present government. I apologise to the motorcycle riders who believe I edged them out of business, even though I replaced it with tricycles also known as ‘Keke NAPEP’, I thought I was doing the right thing,” Ohakim appealed.

While deliberating on his next political ambition, Ohakim stated that it would be his desire to complete his tenure as provided by the constitution, but noted that his party’s decision was paramount as he had promised to abide by any decision taken by his party.
“I will seek the authorisation of my party in line with the constitution to continue my tenure, but that does not mean I will not abide by my party’s decision, I am not desperate, my ambition is to fly my party’s flag.

“I will be a better human being now, those party members who voted for me, it is only me that can assuage their suffering, I have not declared but only consulting,” Ohakim stated

Ifeanyi Ararume Returns To PDP With Supporters

Three years after he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defecting to the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a frontline politician in Imo State and former senator, Chief Ifeanyi Ararume, Tuesday formally announced his return along side his numerous supporters.

The ceremony, which was accompanished by jubilation at the party’s headquarters in Owerri, was witnessed by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Arthur Nzeribe and his wife, Senate Committee Chairman on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodiimma, Hon. Bethel Amadi, National Women Leader of the party, Dr. Kema Chikwe, South-East zonal chairman of the PDP, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd), outgoing State Chairman of the party, Chief Eze Duruiheoma (SAN), state Secretary, GeorgeUzoma Eguh, a former Managing Director of the Daily Times, Chief Innocent Opkaradike, former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Kelechi Nwagwu, among others, Ararume said he returned to the party to contribute his might to building the party at all levels.

He expressed optimism that with his re-entering, the feat the party recorded
during the elections from 1999 to 2007, would be repeated, asking for the
support of all.

Ararume said in 2011, the party in the state mobilised Imo voters to garner
several million votes for President Goodluck Jonathan, commending
Duruiheoma, Ihedioha and others who made it possible for him to return to the
PDP after more than two-and-a-half years.

He said: “I am going to put in everything to support PDP at the local
government, state, and national levels.”
Paying tribute to those who made him return, he said: “They have made it
possible for me to come back. This is democracy. It is not politics of
exclusion.”

He also thanked the immediate past governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, for his efforts.

Ararume said he would ensure that PDP displaces the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government of Rochas Okorocha, to make the PDP take the seat of government in the state.

Speaking, Ihedioha opined that Ararume’s re-entering had shamed political foes, stating that the party in the state would move from strength to strength.

He described Ararume as a political worrior and juggernaut who will make a
great difference in the party come 2015 elections.

Duruiheoma, Chikwe, Eguh, Akobundu who later handed over the party card to
Ararume, said he was not indebted to the party, stating that his spirit had been in the party while his body was outside, expressing joy that he had returned, an indication of better days ahead in the party.

SportsGabriel Reuben Released By Kilmarnock by manuch(op): 11:59pm On Jan 03, 2014
Nigeria midfielder Gabriel Reuben has been released by Kilmarnock after the Scottish Premiership club accepted his request to terminate his contract.
Reuben, 23, joined from Kano Pillars on a three-year contract in April.
But after failing to win a regular place in the team after recovering from injury, he gave notice to the club in November that he wanted to quit.
"I'm happy that my wish to leave was granted. The plan is to explore other avenues,"
"I wish the club and fans all the best."
Reuben returned to fitness in August following a three-month spell on the sidelines with a groin injury and he was part of the Nigeria squad that qualified for the 2014 World Cup.
But with his first-team chances limited at Kilmarnock, Reuben has opted to move to improve his chances of retaining his place in his country's squad for the tournament in Brazil.
Gabriel Reuben's agent, Tony Harris, has confirmed that there are strong interest from several clubs for the Super Eagle.
"The club has agreed to his request to leave so he can look to make a fresh start elsewhere," Harris said.
"I'm pleased with the outcome. There are clubs interested in signing him already. His future will be resolved very soon."
Meanwhile, Gabriel's compatriot Rabiu Ibrahim is also expected to leave Kilmarnock.
The 22-year-old midfielder has not featured since collapsing during the 2-0 win over Ross County on 19 October.
He spent two nights in hospital undergoing tests but he returned to the squad - confined to the bench - after given the green light to return to action.
The creative midfielder is expected to finalise a mutual termination with the Scottish side this week.
PoliticsNo Work, No Pay, Oshiomhole Tells Striking Doctors by manuch(op): 9:13pm On Dec 19, 2013
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of the southern Nigerian state of Edo Thursday reprimanded doctors for joining the ongoing nationwide strike by doctors in federal employment.
Oshiomhole at a meeting with the Association of Resident Doctors, Medical and Dental Consultants Association in Government House in Benin, described the warning strike by the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), as provocative, illegal, avoidable and unnecessary.
“If you have any grievances you are obliged by law, you are obliged by tradition, you are actually compelled by your own oath not to abandon your patients off as if there is pleasure. The facts are not in dispute because doctors under in the employment of Edo State Government are not staff of the Federal Government.
“The Federal Government has no hand in your employment, no hand in your promotion and they have no hand in your posting. How we find money to pay, the Federal Government has no hand in it. So, I believe therefore, that even if we are to talk in the context of employer-employee relationship, you are obliged by law to state the particulars of your grievances to your employer,” he said.
According to the governor, there was nothing in the convention or the law that allows the doctors to simply walk out of their job, adding that the fact that their colleagues under Federal employment had dispute and they sought meeting with the Minister of Health, those were meetings between their colleagues and the Federal Government, asking how is Edo State a part of such meeting.
“I expect that if you feel obliged to go on that strike, I think you should inform us that the strike is inevitable. I do understand the logic and essence of solidarity, but in this business, before you resort to solidarity action, people who are themselves directly involved in the dispute may choose on their own to first go on strike.
“If after sometime you feel that no one is listening and there is need to reinforce by way of solidarity, subject to the rule of law, then you can decide to go on a secondary action. I am not aware that you can go on strike the same day as those who are directly affected,” he said.
The Governor who expressed disappointment at the manner of solidarity by the Edo Chapter of the NMA, asked, “If solidarity was the basis of your participation, why are doctors in the private practice not part of the action?” He therefore called on them to have a rethink to save the lives of the people.
“I am unable to resist the conclusion that the strike like some other ones are designed to enrich those at the private practice by shutting down public hospitals so that those who are sick have no choice but to go to private clinics where some of your members on strike from work go to their own clinics to work.
“And to think that anyone would do this, such that those who cannot afford private health care are now left to die, is a gross abuse of your skills. It borders on blackmail on the entire system and holds all of us to ransom. ‘When a doctor no longer bothers about the life of a patient, that is the beginning of the end.”
He therefore warned that “In Edo State, we will not submit to this blackmail. You are doing essential services because of the nature of your work, you are not expected to go on strike. Let us realise that beyond naira and kobo, there is life.
“I simply don’t understand why the NMA wants to preside over mass death at the eve of Christmas. Even If you don’t have other sentiments, on the mood of the Christmas, you choose to watch people die. That is why yesterday, I told the Honourable Commissioner for Health to put you on notice that if a doctor choose not to work I am sure they also know that they have elected not to be paid.
“Where else in the world do doctors go on warning strike for five consecutive days. If the idea is to warn, do you really need five days of watching people die for you to make your point? I worry for Nigeria because no country can make it this kind of cycle.”
Responding on behalf of the others, Dr. Eghe Abe said the Association would convene to take a dispassionate consideration of the governor’s address and do what is in the interest of the state.

PoliticsChristmas Packages: Okorocha Doles Out N.127b To Communities by manuch(op): 8:53pm On Dec 11, 2013
To ensure that the people of Imo State enjoy this year's Christmas, Governor Rochas Okorocha has doled out the sum of N127.400.000 to be shared among the 637 communities in Imo State.
According to the governor, the money which is expected to be shared N200,000.00 per community, will be used to organize a Christmas get together for the people. Okorocha who announced the Christmas largesse at a meeting with his aides in Owerri last week, directed political appointees and top civil servants in the state to visit all the communities and deliver his Christmas message and packages to them.
He said the programmes and policies of government were too numerous for political appointees alone to handle, adding that top civil servants who have what it takes to formulate and implement policies were needed to assist in interpreting government activities to the people at the grass-root.
They are also to interact with the Traditional Rulers and Executives of Community Government Council to know the extent each community has put to use the N200,000.00 grant given for palm seed plantation (Ikuona nkwu).
The people are to find out developmental projects going on in each community, know their challenges and what government can do for their community.
In addition, Governor Okorocha directed them to find out communities that have not accessed the One million Naira grant from the State account and know why they have not.
The Governor charged them to deliver with speed and report back in the next few days for necessary action.
Governor Okorocha used the occasion to invite Civil Servants and the public at large to attend the numerous activities mapped out to commemorate the birth of Christ and to thank God for his guidance and protection to the government and people of Imo State.
He commended the Commissioner of Police, the State Security Service, the Imo Security Network and other security outfits for their tireless efforts in fighting criminals and ensuring the safety of lives of property in the State, adding that Imo people should continue to observe the 12.00 noon daily prayers which have been very effectual in reducing evil works in the State.
The Imo Chief Executive revealed that night life was returning to Owerri city as street and flood lights have been installed thereby reducing criminal activities at night and warned baby factories and other perpetrators of evil to stop or have their buildings demolished.
He therefore called on Imo citizens outside the State and in Diaspora to visit home this Christmas and New Year as security is being guaranteed in Imo as well as positive behavioural change in the residents making Imo better than it used to be.
While commending Her Excellency, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha for her SNAP programme of building houses and giving free loan to indigent women in the State, Governor Okorocha called on well meaning individuals and corporate bodies to join in the charity Walk for Life taking place this week and solicit for financial and material assistance to the less privileged and disabled in the society.
The highlights of the occasion included grouping of the political Appointees as facilitators with the Permanent Secretaries, Directors, DAGS in LGA Headquarters, School Principals and other officials present to visit their assigned communities
The Governor charged them to deliver with speed and report back to him within few days.
In his contribution, the facilitator for Ohaji Egbema and Commissioner for Petroleum and Environment, Prof. Okee Okoro said the mission will make government's presence to be felt by the people at the grass-root showing that it is the government of the people, by the people and with the people.
Adding his voice, the Head of Service, Mr. Calistus Ekenze said the arrangement will ensure the inclusion of the masses at the grass-root into the affairs of government contrary to what was obtainable years back when it was government for those in urban areas and LGA officials alone. He said the people will have a sense of equity in the allocation of the State's resources
In their opinion, a Director, Mrs. Obiageri Amadi and a school Principal, Mr. Paul Kennedy Duru both agreed that it will yield good results adding that it was an extension of the Governor's goodwill to the people which must be well delivered.

PoliticsAero Contractors Becomes National Carrier by manuch(op): 2:07am On Nov 24, 2013
Nigeria’s Federal Government is set to turn heavily indebted Aero Contractors Airline into the country’s national carrier.Nigeria’s oldest commercial airline will now be called the Nigerian Eagle and will be launched by President Goodluck Jonathan once he returns from London, sources said.
One of Aero Contractors’ planes with registration number 5N BLC has already been painted into Nigeria’s national colours of green and white.
The plane now resembles the aircraft once used by Nigeria Airways, the mismanaged government airline that crumbled years ago.
Sources said the government has also bought ten new Embraer planes to flag off the new national carrier. The ten Embraer aircraft will be added to the planes already in the fleet of Aero Contractors Airline, the source said.
Critics have criticised the move saying that Aero Contractors was so badly indebted that the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, took it over last year, when the airline couldn’t pay its debts.
They said with the takeover, billions of naira borrowed from Nigerian coffers have been erased and nobody has been held accountable for the big losses.
Besides, critics argue that national airlines are no longer viable in the world as they are often being mismanaged or abused.
The new national carrier to be launched by President Goodluck Jonathan will be a privileged airline that will receive waivers for virtually everything, the source said.”Arik Air will just die because it won’t be able to compete.
The Nigerian Eagle will operate from the General Aviation Terminal in Lagos,” the source said.

PoliticsNew PDP Constitutes A 6-man Committee To Receive 5 New Governors by manuch(op): 10:57pm On Nov 10, 2013
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) held its monthly meeting yesterday, 9th November, 2013, in Abuja to review developments and chart the way forward for the party.

1. The meeting presided over by our National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, set up a six-man Reception Organising Committee to set in motion the reception in honour of the five new Governors of the PDP who have decided to join our faction of the party. The Committee is headed by Hon. Dr. Sam Jaja, the National Vice Chairman of nPDP, with Hon. Nasir Isa Abubakar, the National Organising Secretary, as the Secretary of the Committee. Other members of the Committee include Engr. Abubakar G. Umar, the National Treasurer; Hon. Binta Masi Garba, the Women Leader; Mr. Timi Frank, the Youth Leader; and Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the National Public Secretary. The Committee was directed to submit for immediate consideration by the G7 Governors, the venue, logistics and modalities for receiving the five Governors, ex-Governors, Nationalists and key members of the National Assembly who have indicated interest to join us.

2. The NWC received with utmost happiness the ruling of the Appeal Court returning His Excellency, Prince (Barr) Olagunsoye Oyinlola back to his seat as the National Secretary of PDP. It pleaded with him to ensure that the impunity in PDP becomes something of the past as we await other court rulings that will restore the Baraje-led NWC as the authentic NWC of the party to enable us join him in rebuilding the party. The party after considering the expert opinion of the Legal Adviser, Barr. Eric Opia, decided that Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola does not need any other oath of office to return to work as PDP National Secretary as he subscribed to PDP’s oath of office alongside other members of the NWC that were sworn-in at the Eagle Square on March 24, 2012. According to the legal expert, the import of the verdict by the appellate court, which did not attach any condition to its ruling, is that Oyinlola is the validly elected PDP National Secretary. That has also been the position of INEC which monitored the National Convention of PDP held on March 24, 2012. As things stand, Oyinlola remains the National Secretary of PDP and only the Supreme Court can reverse that decision. The nPDP NWC is therefore of the view that Prince Oyinlola should resume office immediately without waiting for any directive from any quarters. Any other person who parades himself as the National Secretary of PDP should be committed to prison for contempt of court.

3. The nPDP National Organising Secretary, Hon. Nasir Isa Abubakar, was appointed to replace Oyinlola in acting capacity pending further directives from the G7 Governors and the nPDP Caucus.

4. the NWC commended and congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan by once again improving on his democratic credentials by directing for the immediate reinstatement of Prince Oyinlola as the duly elected National Secretary of PDP not minding the plots by some undemocratic within the system who want to portray our party in bad light by embarking upon on an exercise in futility by trying to lure the South-West PDP to write a petition against Prince Oyinlola and use it to invite him to the Alh Dikko’s Disciplinary Committee and after suspends him. To us this plot apart from being childish exposes Tukur and his cohorts as true enemies of PDP and the force behind the continuous crisis in the party which they don’t want its end because of their myopic and selfish goals but thank God for the intervention of President Jonathan to end this undesirable macabre dance.

5. NWC congratulated the G7 Governors comprising Governors Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, Aliyu Wammako of Sokoto and Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State, for their wise decision to embark on a nationwide tour to brief Elders and former Heads of State of our nation on the state of our party and the efforts by some people to ensure that peace continues to elude PDP. This action by the G7 Governors should proof to the entire world our unflinching desire to restore peace to the party. NWC decided to wait for the briefing and recommendation of the G7 Governors before deciding our next move, even as we continue to wait for the invitation of President Goodluck Jonathan to conclude our meeting on the fate of PDP.

6. The NWC welcomed the initiative of the National Security Adviser to President Jonathan, Col. Sambo Dasuki, to further broker peace amongst the G7 Governors, PDP and the Presidency knowing the implication of the continued crisis on governance and the security of the nation. The NSA has once again by this act demonstrated that he is a statesman unlike some of the hawks in the Presidency who prefer that the crisis in the party continues. These hawks are deceiving Mr. President into thinking that they love him more than those in the nPDP while they are actually engineering his political misfortune.

7. NWC commended the nPDP leadership, including both the Caucus and NWC members, for turning the party into the beautiful bride of Nigerian politics in view of the fact that we hold the key to decide the next President of Nigeria come 2015. The NWC considered other options in case our talks with President Jonathan fail to produce the desired result and concluded that our door should be opened to the APC option, while not ruling out other options that would give us the leverage in reshaping the polity come 2015.

8. NWC congratulated the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria for doing the country proud last Friday by winning the FIFA Under-17 World Cup for the fourth time in grand style, stating that the boys have demonstrated our common resolve and belief that Nigeria is a great country and can achieve the seemingly impossible if only our leaders can put their acts together. The NWC advised the Super Eagles to sustain this victory by walloping the Ethiopian team by next Saturday in their World Cup qualifier, even as the NWC prepares to storm Calabar to cheer them to victory
