Peter Obi was on his way from Enugu to catch up a meeting in Anambra when he came across an accident scene by Orji River in Enugu State.

Two Catholic priests were stunned as they discovered a citizen in Owerri Correctional Centre, who has spent 14 years of his youthful years awaiting trial.


The priests, Rev. Fr. Remigius Him and Rev. Fr. Professor Jude Onuoha, were in the Correctional Centre to celebrate their priestly silver jubilee with the inmates.
Speaking on behalf of the inmates, the Provost of the inmates, Mr. Onyeka Mbaeri, disclosed that he had spent 14 years awaiting trial in the Correctional Centre.

Mbaeri also commended the clerics for remembering the inmates as they celebrate their priestly silver jubilee and prayed God to bless the priests.

In his own account, another inmate, Mr. Andrew Ukwuegbunwa, maintained his innocence of the alleged crime for which he has remained in detention.

He recalled that when hoodlums stormed the Correctional Centre in 2021, he did not want to complicate his matter by running away as others did.
His words: “I am innocent of the crime for which I have been in detention. When the jailbreak took place in 2021, rather than run away and complicate my matter, when I know that I am innocent, I ran and surrendered myself to the Archbishop Emeritus of Owerri, Most Rev. Anthony J. V. Obinna, who called officials of the Correctional Centre to come and take me back to the Centre.”
While recalling that after the jailbreak, Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, Governor Hope Uzodimma and the Minister of Interior, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, visited the facility, assuring all the inmates that returned on their own that their matters would be pleasingly looked into.


“It is sad that since they made the promise, we have not heard from any of them again. I urge the priests to help make our plight known to government”, Ukwuegbunwa pleaded.

Addressing the inmates, Rev. Professor Onuoha said: “I am aware of the fact that most of you are here for the crimes you knew nothing about. There are some who are here for offences they are guilty of. I urge you all to be prayerful and look up to God.”


For Fr. Ihim, as much as some of the inmates are either innocent or guilty, “they are also human beings, who are vulnerable and should not be treated as infra-humans because they made mistakes”.


He was not particularly happy with the slow pace of the Nigerian judicial system and wondered why a citizen should spend 14 years in jail awaiting trials.

Kanunta Kanu, younger brother of the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafran, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has blamed South East governors and political leaders for missing a golden opportunity that would have made Nigeria to be begging the zone to produce the President in 2023.

According to him if Leaders from the zone had not worked against his brother and the agitation for Biafra, the Federal Government would have been begging them now to take the presidency and remain in Nigeria.

Kanunta who spoke at Ikengaonline virtual town hall meeting, said that if the political elite from the zone had identified with the agitation for Biafra, the Nigeria Authorities would have taken them more seriously and be calling them for negotiation.

He regretted that despite working against the interest of Ndigbo in their desperation to please the federal powers, Igbo political elite have also been ‘used and dumped’ by the federal powers.
Kanunta also expressed disappointment at the unwillingness of South East political elite to comment on the existential security threat posed by the menacing activities of herdsmen in South East.

He further maintained that Biafran actualisation would become easier if the political elite indentified with the cause.

” Our political leaders are not even strategic enough. Nigeria would have called them to negotiate and even offer them the Presidency on a platter of gold if they had identified with the Biafra liberation movement”.

He regretted that instead of boldly championing the cause of the zone South East Governors and political elite have rather chosen to maintain sealed lips for political correctness.

He said that his brother “is being persecuted today not because he commited any crime” but because of his passion to secure freedom for the oppressed people of South-East, yet the Leaders in the zone have abandoned him to his fate”.

Kanunta accused the South East leaders of insensitivity and nonchalance about the future of the zone.

“My brother was renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria and has been in detention for over one year now. And our leaders are finding it difficult to talk about him or Biafra.

” Why is it that the South East Governors and Leaders are also not talking about the killings and Kidnappings by Fulani herdsmen in our zone? The bandits imported insecurity in our land but our Leaders have refused to talk about all these, rather everybody is after 2023 election.

” Who will vote for them in 2023 if they kill all the people? My brother is where he is today, suffering for speaking the truth. He is there because he is condemning the exclusion and suppression of our people.

” Bandits have been imported into our land ; over 3000 of them in Imo State. They are the ones killing our people and Kidnapping them like fowls but nobody is taking about it.

A self-confessed leader of the confraternity, otherwise called Aiye, Saheed Taiwo, has given a chilling account of the cruel fate rival cultists suffered in his group’s hand, any time there was a clash in Ogun State.
Unlike other cult groups, 27-year-old Taiwo said his group did not only kill rivals but they also cut off their hands and used them to prepare protection charms. The severed hands according to him, were also used to prepare concoction for his members against arrest by the Police.
But the potency of the charm became questionable as he was arrested alongside two other hit men in his confraternity, by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team ,IRT ,headed by DCP Olatuniji Disu ,in the Abeokuta area of Ogun State.

Those arrested with Taiwo were : Isaiah Babatunde and Oyede Sulaimon. They were alleged to have killed members of rival cult groups within Ita Oshin and neighboring communities in Ogun. Crime Guard gathered that during the operation that led to the arrest of the trio, another notorious member of the group identified simply as Ben, disappeared with one of the gang’s AK 47 rifles.

Taiwo , confessed to have joined the Aiye cult group in 2018, as a senior Secondary School 1 student, of Anglican High School, Ibara, Abeokuta. He however dropped out of school in 2019. Between the period he joined and when he was arrested, he said he had lost count of the number of rival cult members his group had killed.

According to him: “As an individual, I cannot tell you I have killed anyone. This is because we usually operate as a group. We have killed many people. I have lost count of the number. Anytime we were going for an operation, our leader would instruct us to ensure we kill as many as we could.

“We don’t just kill. We cut off their hands. The severed hands were taken to a set of twins in the Ago Oka area of Isale Ogun, in Abeokuta. I met the tradition of delivering severed hands to the twins . They are used for rituals, especially to prepare concoction that would protect us from being killed by rituals and being arrested by the Police.”

Asked why the charm did not work for him and his colleagues, he cast a blank stare apparently wondering why, too.
He mentioned names of rival cult members his group had killed and the circumstances under which the operation was carried out.Taiwo said: “Members of my group are responsible for several killings in Ogun State. A particular case was the killing of a leader of a rival cult group in the Ita Oluwo area of Abeokuta ,some months ago . He was called Tommy. But I was not among those that went for the operation. Ben ,Dare, Killer ,Idris and Aloma did and they went with a Pump Action Rifle.

“They went on motorbikes . They said they first matcheted Tommy before shooting him, to ensure he was dead. He was one of the leaders of the Eiye group. All the cult killings were reprisal attacks.

“There was another reprisal attack on the Eiye group. Eiye cult group killed a member of our group during the clash and our leaders, Dare and others, mandated us to go and see what was happening there .When we got there ,we identified one of them . Later we traced the identified Eiye member ,who was one of those who killed our , to Lafenwa and killed him.

“We also cut off one of his hands with our axe. We don’t call it axe in our group. We call it ‘ seven’ We took the hands to the twins for the usual thing.” Continuing, Taiwo stated that “We have assorted arms and ammunitions .There is hardly any arm you cannot find with our group be they single or double barrel guns, or AK 47 and many more.

“I was using a double barrel gun for operation. One of us , Rasqie , escaped with it on the day we were arrested.”

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi , assured that other fleeing members of the cult groups would be arrested and prosecuted, adding that Taiwo and his colleagues would be charged to court.

Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar in a Last Man Standing match at SummerSlam on Saturday night to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
