The government of Nigeria has announced the award of a $5.8 billion contract to build what will be the largest power plant in the country.

The 3,050-megawatt Mambila hydroelectric power project in the state of Taraba will be delivered by a consortium of Chinese state-owned construction firms.

The megaproject will feature four dams between 50 and 150 meters tall, and take six years to complete, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, told reporters in Abuja.

The Chinese Export-Import Bank will finance 85% of the development, with the Nigerian government contributing 15%.

The Central Bank of Nigeria is planning to borrow N917.14bn worth of Treasury bills between September 14 and November 30, a CBN debt calendar for the fourth quarter has shown.

The central bank is aiming to auction N209.85bn in 91-day bills, N197.89bn in 182-day and N509.39bn in 364-day debt, according to a Reuters report.

The CBN sells Treasury bills twice a month to help fund the government’s budget deficit and support commercial banks in managing liquidity.

The coalition of Northern Group said in Abuja on Tuesday that the October 1, 2017 ultimatum given to Igbo living in the North to vacate the zone remained.

The coalition, which is made up of 16 different groups, spoke at a meeting it held with a former Governor of Abia State, Chief Uzor Kalu.

The leader of the coalition, Mr Shettima Yerima, restated the group’s position during the meeting.

The naira closed at 365 against the United States dollar at the parallel market segment of the foreign exchange market on Monday, down from 364/dollar it closed on Friday.

This was despite the sales of $462m and $195m in the interbank forex market by the Central Bank of Nigeria on Friday and Monday, respectively.

In line with its commitment to sustain and deepen flexibility in the forex market to further enhance forex flow in the economy, the CBN sold the total sum of $462,336,426.74.

A breakdown showed that the Retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales received the largest allocation of $267.3m

Former England football star, John Fashanu was last week locked up in an Abuja prison over involvement in a land related scam.

The former Wimbledon player and television personality was arrested and held for two days because he was involved in a scam to sell land that wasn’t for sale, The Sun UK reported.

Fashanu was released on July 19 on bail.

Innoson Nig. Ltd., a local car manufacturer, has filed a lawsuit against Guaranty Trust Bank for character assassination and defamation.

The company together with its founder, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, took the matter to a High Court sitting in Abuja and are demanding N400bn as damages for injury to their reputation, moral character, credibility, office, vocation and trade.
