Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Kassim Afegbua, has disclosed how the former Super Eagles Coach, Shuaibu Amodu died in Benin. Afegbua said Amodu was discovered dead in his room on Saturday morning at his house, located at Delta Crescent, GRA, Benin. Afegbua, a cousin of the late coach, also confirmed that the corpse has been deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin, awaiting autopsy. “We were together yesterday. He came to my house in the morning and we were discussing the death of Keshi. He told me he would be travelling to Okpella this morning (Saturday.) Later in the day, he was at the police station to see one of the family members who was arrested. “Later in the night, he complained of chest pain, and we called a doctor to check his blood pressure and it was 140 over 100. He was advised to take his drugs and also stop participation in the Ramadan fasting. “He later led the Tarawih (Muslim fasting prayer) for the family. And after the prayer, he went to bed after eating. “He was discovered dead in his room at about 4 a.m. today when they went to wake him up for the (Suhur) morning prayer. Meanwhile, the former coach of the National Female team, Godwin Izilien, has described the death of Shuaibu Amodu as a double tragedy. Izilien who spoke to journalists at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital this morning, said: “If you see me shedding tears, it is not because Shuaibu Amodu is dead. I was trying to reach him several times yesterday but his line was not available, which was unusual. But I eventually got him in the evening and he told me he was at the police station, that he was there to bail one of his relations. “I eventually went to meet him at the police station where I told him I’ve brought the driver he requested and he said we should meet by 10 this morning to interview him. And this is the meeting,” he said, and burst into tears. He described the death of Amodu, just three days after the death of Stephen Keshi, as a double tragedy for the nation. http://www.maquinsblog.com/2016/06/how-ex-super-eagles-coach-shuaibu-amodu.html?m=1 |

Ahead of this year’s African Movie Academy Awards, AMAA, holding today in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the president of the jury for 2016 edition, Mr. Shaibu Husseini has revealed why the names of the winners are not written on the trophies, saying it’s a deliberate act on the part of the organizers to avoid manipulation and disparity that may trail such practice. Husseini, who has served as a member of the panel for close to eight years now, also listed maintaining transparency and credibility which the awards stand for as part of the reason the organizers refused to write the winners’ names on the trophies. SHAIBU In a chat with HVP, Husseini further revealed that the organizers have been under pressure to have the names of the winners written on the trophies, insisting that doing so will create a serious room for manipulation. “Since the jury members do not know the winners until the awards night, doing so will create room for manipulation,”he said. However, recounting some of the challenges he has been facing since his appointment as the president of jury, the celebrated film critic cum journalist said, apart from working round the clock to select the best entries, the jury members hardly have time to attend to the needs and their families. Husseini, at the unveiling of the nominees last month noted that AMAA is a jury based award, unlike Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards,AMVCA, where nominees embark on voting campaigns to win any of the categories. A performing artist who has made a name for himself as film critic and a journalist, Husseini has been the Chairman of AMAA selection committee for seven years running. He authored the book, ‘Moviedom”, which narrates the developmental stages of Nollywood. Husseinin has worked as cultural administrator, and a two-time president of the Dance Guild of Nigeria. He also served as special assistant to the DG of the National Theatre/National Troupe of Nigeria aside serving as the secretary of the governing board of the National Theatre/ National Troupe. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/amaa-dont-write-names-winners-trophy/ |

The Nigerian football icon Stephen Okechukwu Keshi died suddenly in the early hours of Wednesday in Benin City, Edo state. The former international football player and coach had lost his wife of 33 years, Kate, last year after a prolonged battle with cancer. Newsmen confirmed his death from a member of his family as well as one of his close associates. “He was not ill at all, never showed any signs of illness, but we suspect he never got over the death of his wife,” a friend said. He is survived by four children and his mother. Keshi, is the only Nigerian coach to have won the Africa Cup of Nations, achieved a rare feat in 2013 by becoming only the second person to win the trophy both as a player and a coach. The only other person to have achieved the feat is Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary. Keshi, a product of St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos, started his playing career at a very young age at ACB Football Club, and later played for New Nigeria Bank, Stade d’Abidjan, Africa Sports, Lokeren, Anderlecht, RC Strasbourg, and a host of other clubs. He represented Nigeria from 1982, at age 20, till 1994, most of the time captaining the Super Eagles and scoring vital goals from his position as a central defender. He also coached Togo and Nigeria at the World Cup, as well as Mali. Keshi, nicknamed the “Big Boss” for his leadership skills, is the fifth member of the all-conquering 1994 team to die, following Uche Okafor, Thompson Oliha, Rashidi Yekini and Wilfred Agbonavbare. . Played for A Lot Of Clubs All Over the World When he was playing himself, he was a center back. He participated in 386 games and scored 61 goals. He played in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He received training in the USA. -His career as a coach started in Togo. Keshi led their team to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Before taking Nigeria, he coached Mali. He thinks African teams must have more African coaches. And that it will be better than to hire less-competitive Europeans - He didn’t apply to be a coach He stated that he has never applied to be a coach for Nigerian team. It just happened that in 2000, he was invited to assist Bonfere Jo. And in 2013 Keshi coached Nigerian team to victory in the African Cup of Nations, defeating Burkina Faso 1–0 in the final. The next day, the coach resigned for unknown reasons. But the he returned a day later and reversed the resignation. Later in 2013 he led Nigeria to the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil where the Super Eagles ended up losing to Spain in the final match of Group B. -He makes controversial squad decisions Of course, when it comes to national teams, it is hard to pick up 23 players for the World Cup, especially in a country full of talented players. But the decisions of the Big Boss cause a lot of debates. For example, he excluded Ejike Uzoenyi, voted as the Most Valuable Player after the 2014 African Nations Championship in South Africa. -He has his own sense of style He will never put on white trousers or a suit. He just doesn’t feel comfortable in it. So often times, he wears just a track suit of Nigerian colours. Keshi is quite a reserved person. He prefers to spend his free time with his wife at home. Even when he was young he didn’t like partying. Keshi is a person of self-discipline. RIP the "big boss" source:http://www.maquinsblog.com/2016/06/facts-that-you-might-not-know-about.html?m=1 |
