Earlier in the month, Seun Egbeegbe took to his IG page to publicly apologize to Toyin Aimakhu over some comments he made about her after their breakup. Shortly after, rumors started flying about that he did so because he was dragged to the Lagos State commissioner of police and forced him to sign an undertaking. But in a chat with Encomuim, he threw the reports in a trash can. His words: “To start with, I don’t know anything about that. And to say that I signed any undertaking before the Commissioner of Police because of what happened between Toyin Aimakhu and myself is a lie. Also anybody saying that I prostrated for her before the CP or any where should come forward with a proof. How can I be prostrating for her? It’s an unfounded rumour. I, Seun Egbegbe, didn’t appear before the CP to sign any undertaking and I didn’t prostrate for Toyin or beg her for any reason. It’s just a rumour. Maybe those writing or posting that are only looking for unnecessary attention or maybe it’s being sponsored. If that’s true, I believe there should be a photograph as evidence just like it happened in the case of Wizkid and Linda Ikeji. So, it’s just a waste of time believing that kind of rubbish. All I know is that Toyin and I have settled and there’s no issue between us again.”…. pls believe me, believe me pls http://www.maquinsblog.com/2016/05/i-did-not-beg-or-prostrate-for-toyin.html?m=1

The Muhammadu Buhari administration is leaving no stone unturned in its determination persuade Nigerians to accept the new N145 per litre price of the premium motor spirit it introduced last Wednesday. To this end the Federal Government has scheduled a meeting for today with organised labour to dissuade its members from embarking on an indefinite strike from Wednesday. Both the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress at the weekend issued a three day ultimatum to the federal government to reverse the increase to N86.50 per litre or else their members would embark on an indefinite nationwide strike from Wednesday. NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba told Daily Trust on phone he was aware that an invitation for talks had been sent from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. But he said the letter had not been delivered because Sunday was a work-free day. Sources said the government wanted to meet the labour leaders today to iron out areas of disagreement. Asked about the latest development regarding its planned nationwide strike, Wabba said the communiqué jointly issued by organised labour on Saturday concerning the strike subsisted. However, the ranks of the labour union remained divided over the planned strike. Oil workers had pulled out of the strike Friday and backed the government on deregulation. Many civil society organisations have also backed out of the strike and urged labour to shelve it in the interest of Nigerians. The association of pilots and other workers in the aviation sector have also backed the government saying they would not take part in the strike. The government also yesterday got the backing of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers. Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawal will today (Monday) address Nigerians on the new prices of petrol and the crisis it has generated. Deputy spokesman in the office of the SGF Mohammed Dakwoji disclosed last night in Abuja that the SGF met Friday and Saturday with stakeholders and would also hold other meetings today before he would brief Nigerians. He could however not be specific on whether the Labour unions who had threatened industrial actions over the matter are part of the meetings held or among those listed for today. “Yes the SGF had been having meetings over this matter. You know this is a sort of crisis and stakeholders and Nigerians are resolving whatever differences may occur. By tomorrow (today) the SGF Engineer Babachir David Lawal would brief Nigerians on the outcome and progress of the situation,” Dakwoji told Daily Trust. Another official who pleaded not to be named for ‘official reasons’ said that the SGF had met with some individuals and organisations over the new fuel price. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/05/16/strike-fg-meets-nlc-tuc-for-talks/ |

Organised Labour, made up of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and their civil society allies has given the Federal Government till 12 midnight of Tuesday, 17th May, to revert to the old pump price of petrol or face a nationwide shut down if the economy. In a joint communique signed by the President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and his TUC counterpart, Bobboi Kaigama, they asked Nigerians to stockpile enough food item to last them a while for the prosecution of the current struggle against neo-liberal agenda in Nigeria. They alleged that those they termed as neo-liberal forces have taken over the government and are determined to make the government collapse even before the four tenure. If the government fails to accede to the demands of the unions, the NLC, TUC and their civil society allies resolve to commence the following actions with effect from Wednesday, May 18, 2016; · Mobilize to the streets across the country, ordinary and helpless Nigerians to whom they owe the duty of protection; · Shut down all Banks, Sea and Airports, Government and private offices as well as Markets. · Commence indefinite nationwide strike action. · Fight/resist the machinations and cruelties of the neo-liberal forces in the government as part of the process of saving the government from itself and the generality of Nigerians from slavery. Nigerians were advised to stock sufficient food items that will last for a while for the prosecution of the ” current struggle against neo-liberal agenda in Nigeria”. He said the singular act of “mindless pump price increase is a betrayal of trust on the part of the government. http://maquinnews..com.ng/2016/05/indefinite-nationwide-strike-labour.html?m=1 |
Some armed kidnappers had stormed the UNICAL staff quarters and abducted Mrs. Ndifon and her daughter after breaking into their residence at about 9pm, and also kidnapped the third victim, Iniama, who was driving into his nearby residence. While Mrs. Ndifon and Dr. Iniama are staff of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Oyebah is said to be a student of the University of Calabar. The kidnappers had two days after the abduction got in contact with the families of the victims and demanded for N30m each (N60m from both families). It was learnt on Wednesday that an undisclosed amount of money was paid jointly by both families to the kidnappers before the abductees were released. A close source to one of the families, who preferred not to be named, said the victims regained their freedom at about 10pm on Tuesday. “They came back home at about 10pm on Tuesday looking worn out. They will undergo proper medical checks to ascertain their wellbeing but we thank God they came back safely. “I understand that they paid about N5m that was marked money to the kidnappers but no one has said how much exactly was paid. I gathered that the kidnappers warned them not to disclose the amount they paid as ransom. “But from what we were told, it was a joint negotiation between both families that led to their release late last night “Details are not very clear at the moment on where they were taken to and held hostage in the past nine days. We also do not know if any arrest has been made,” she said. However, the Police Public Relations Officer in charge of the Cross River State Police Command, Mr. John Eluu, who confirmed the development, said two suspects had been arrested in connection with the kidnap. He said the victims regained their freedom following the intense pressure by the police team. “They were released on Tuesday night. It was as a result of the pressure from the police. The police crack team sent by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, assisted the state command to secure their release. “I am not aware if any ransom was paid. All I know is that it was as a result of pressure from the police that led to their release. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnap and interrogations are ongoing.” http://maquinnews..com.ng/2016/05/kidnapped-unical-staffs-regains-freedom.html?m=1 |

The Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, says that next week, it will re-enact the Occupy Nigeria protest against the removal of subsidy from petroleum products. The Occupy Nigeria protests were held in 2012 when the government at the time, increased the fuel price. The National President of NANs, Comrade Tijani Shehu, stated this in Abuja, at a protest rally where the association also called for the removal of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu. According to him, “a directive has been issued to all tertiary institutions to shut down all campuses on Tuesday and Wednesday, next week. After that, they will all converge on Abuja for a mass protest. On behalf of NANS and the whole 40.1 million Nigeria students, we condemn the new fuel price and by Tuesday or Wednesday, the whole Nigerian students would occupy Nigeria. So the Federal Government should look into this before NANS mobilize the entire Nigeria students to occupy Nigeria.” The students, who came in their hundreds arrived at the headquarters of Ministry of Education, blocked the ministry entrance, and carried different placards asking the Minister of Education, to either resign or President Muhammadu Buhari should remove him. They accused the Minister of tactically rapidly eroding standards Nigeria’s educational institution. “Mallam Adamu’s impunity began rising to its never ending crest with his arbitary pronouncement of the sack of Vice Chancellors of 13 federal universities without any further recourse to the universities rulers or any extant law to the said effect. The simplest explanation the Minister had before the National Assembly was that those who worked politically for the government needed compensation. The wrong precedence the Minister of Education – Malam Adamu Adamu seeks to entrench has already began to exert a negative toll on our educational institutions as seen in the numerous upheavals taking place on our campuses without the due attention of the Minister”, he said. The Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, addressed the students and appealed to them to go home that he would ensure the Minister of Education gets their letter of protest. “There are many ways of getting things done. He cannot run away but I want to assure you that I would personally fix an appointment with the Minister of Education to meet with you. The minister won’t run away from you. Someday you would be minister, let us do this, let us have respect for the system”, he said. On new fuel pump price, he said, “it is a bigger issues and I am sure Federal Government would explain its role on the reason for the new pump price. Federal Government must have its reasons for taking a particular stand”, Okojie said. |
