Health / Herbal Medicine: An Alternative To Modern Medicine In Nigeria by marigot(f): 10:23am On Sep 05, 2018
Owing to the fact that herbs have been an important source of medication in virtually all cultures and societies in this present time.
The rate at which herbal medicine has been increasing in recognition is alarming. Herbal medicines are naturally occurring, plant-derived substances with minimal or no industrial processing that have been used to treat illness within local or regional healing practices. Traditional herbal medicines are getting significant attention in global health debates, because of its natural healing methods.
Herbal medicines is an important tool for empowering and enriching the capacity and quality of public health systems. It provides more comprehensive approach to health systems, preserves cultural diversity and facilitate human development.
The Nigerian Government has recognized the need and shown political will by approving and adopting guidelines for the practice of traditional medicine. The regulatory authority, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has also taken steps to protect the health of consumers by drafting the ‘Guidelines for the Registration and Control of Herbal Medicinal Products and Related Substances in Nigeria. Herbal medicinal products manufactured on a large scale, whether imported or locally manufactured, must be registered and their advertisement messages and scripts approved by NAFDAC prior to their marketing.
Herbal medicine has several benefits such that it is cost effective and affordable, modern medical practice and pharmaceutical drugs are becoming more expensive that the common man can hardly afford them. The growing testimonies of increasing effectiveness of herbal medicine, coupled with much lower occurrence of side effects, have made Herbal medicine a ready alternative indeed to Modern medicine.
Another benefit around the use of herbal remedies is, there are almost never any negative side effects, when used correctly. Carefully chosen herbs work gently on the body, and are not intrusive. Also, because it is natural, herbs tend to complement the body’s systems, instead of working or fighting against them. Herbal remedies can be used as both a preventative measure as well as a way to help balance the body when it has broken down and is suffering from chronic illness
Also, herbal products in form of supplements, herbal teas, extract, essential oils and so on, are easy to come by.
The problem of Herbal medicine in Nigeria is that it is not well documented. Practitioners all over the country have died not having recorded the knowledge of Herbal medicine for descendants.
There is no doubt that this trend is about to change as I see a lot of being generated by present day practitioners.
Herbal medicine has been practiced and used for the treatment of numerous ailments for centuries.
Nature has blessed humanity with a huge number of different herbs, Laden with tremendous amount of medicinal properties that can be deployed for the treatment and prevention of different ailments.
Your individual treatment plan may include herbal remedies and, where appropriate, dietary changes or nutritional supplements. Most herbal medicines are given in the form of a liquid tincture that is taken in 5ml doses of two or three times daily. You may also be prescribed a herbal tea, tablets, ointment, cream or lotion.
After the initial consultation, three or four shorter consultations are usually necessary to assess your progress, followed by check-ups every three to six months, depending on the nature of your condition. Because herbal medicines work in a gentle and subtle way, they can take longer to work than orthodox drugs. If you notice no improvement afterwards, see you doctor.

Health / Effects Of Burnout At Workplace On Productivity by marigot(f): 9:12am On Sep 05, 2018
The ways to success has been laid out long before we were born with little deviation in spite of the tech explosion, and a massive cultural shift which leaves many people asking questions they can’t seem to answer. Our desire for success and happiness, along with a distorted view of what that is, paradoxically, creates significantly more stress for them, you can’t tell me someone’s successful if getting up every morning fills them with dread and yet so many live their life this way. You don’t have to. Burnout should not be your reality.
Burnout in the workplace is globally considered a risk factor for workers' health and safety. More specifically, the health care sector is a constantly changing environment, and the working conditions in hospitals are increasingly becoming demanding and stressful. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “a healthy workplace is one in which workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of all workers and the sustainability of workplace.
Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism and ineffectiveness in the workplace, and by chronic negative responses to stressful workplace conditions. A heavy workload, coupled with an unmotivated and unhappy workforce is bound to cause burnout to employees and severely affect productivity in the workplace.
The majority of employees experiencing burnout will remain at work. Being aware of changes in attitudes and energy can help with early identification. Employees may not realize that they are dealing with burnout, and may instead believe that they are just struggling to keep up during stressful times. Stress, however, is usually experienced as feeling anxious and having a sense of urgency while burnout is more commonly experienced as helplessness, hopelessness, or apathy.
The prevalence of burnout is increasing as the lines between being at work and home are significantly blurred.
Now more than ever we are seeing individuals racing from one busy moment to the next before collapsing into bed, then getting up and doing it again tomorrow.
Employees may not be aware of the negative impacts on their performance that this can have, such as increased errors or lower productivity. Employers and co-workers may attribute the changes to a poor attitude or loss of motivation.
The negative effects of burnout can increase significantly before anyone recognizes or addresses the problem and unaddressed burnout can increase the chance of developing clinical depression or other serious conditions such as decreased productivity, increased PTO/sick leave, more errors and workplace accidents and higher turnover rates.
Every employer and manager should be aware of the signs of employee burnout so that they can take actionable steps to help employees before it’s too late. Look for some of these common signs to spot employee burnout: Working more overtime hours than usual, working on the weekends, mood swings, irritability, decrease in quality of work, less socializing and more isolation than usual, fatigue, increase in sick/personal days, disengagement and unusual sensitivity
When it comes to employee burnout, prevention is key. It’s much easier to take steps to prevent burnout from occurring than trying to cure employee's burnout. Luckily, there are a lot of easy steps employers can take to both help prevent burnout and help employees who are feeling the effects of burnout: Talk about stress, offer flexibility. Encourage time off. cross-train employees and prioritize wellness.
Also, organizations can find ways to reduce workplace stressors that may contribute to burnout by considering implementation of a psychological health and safety management system

Health / Why It Is Risky For Pregnant Women, Nursing Mothers To Drink Zobo-edokita by marigot(f): 2:59pm On Aug 29, 2018
Most Nigerians loves zobo drink, especially our women praised zobo for helping them through their pregnancy; this can be true as zobo is used to treat morning sickness, fatigue, weakness and nausea.

This drink has many advantages such that it is, affordable, and available. Zobo is not only used for refreshments but can also be used to regulate blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, strengthen blood vessels, calm the nerves, reduce stress, for weight loss, and to improve sex drive. but now the question is, why are pregnant and breastfeeding women discouraged from taking this drink? extensive literature review by Public health Nigeria revealed several reasons why pregnant women and Nursing mothers should avoid zobo drink.

A study published in the African Journal of Alternative and Complementary medicine revealed that when pregnant women take zobo, it increases the risk of them giving birth to babies with low birth weight. Babies are said to have low weight when they weigh less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces, (that is less than 2,500 grams). Low weight babies look smaller than babies of normal weight; their head may be bigger than the rest of the body with little body fat.

Remember that zobo is used in losing weight; this can also affect an unborn child. There are many risks involved in giving birth to a baby with a low weight; they can be born with lots of health problems than babies with normal weight. This can even make them to be placed in the neonatal intensive care unit to gain weight and to treat health problems the babies have.

Some of the health problems that affects low weight babies are respiratory distress syndrome caused by immature lungs, inability to maintain body temperature, low levels of oxygen at birth, infection, bleeding in the brain, difficulty feeding and gaining weight, patent ductus arteriosus (a common heat problem in premature babies), necrotizing enterocolitis (an intestinal problem that premature babies suffer from), eye problems like retinopathy which affects the blood vessels in the eyes and sudden infant death syndrome.

They are prone to some diseases later in life than babies born with a healthy weight. Some of the health conditions babies with low birth weight are at risk of are heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome.

It is not even safe for a breastfeeding mother to consume too much zobo; because it decreases the appetite of the woman and make it difficult for her to eat much food. Remember that zobo is used to control weight gain; when this happens the woman is unable to eat much and this affects her nutritional status and that of the baby.

This will affect the baby, even up to his/her puberty level; it can delay puberty which is dangerous to the growth and development of the individual.

Politics / Comparative Analysis On Corporate Governance by marigot(f): 9:05am On Aug 20, 2018
ABSTRACT
Corporate governance is a process, relation and mechanism set up for the corporations and firms based on certain guidelines and principles by which a company is controlled and directed. The principles provided in the system ensure that the company is governed in a way that it is able to set and achieve its goals and objectives in the context of the social, regulatory and market environment, and is able to maximize profits and also benefit those whose interest is involved in it, in the long run. The division and distribution of rights and responsibilities among different participants in the corporation (such as the board of directors, managers, shareholders, creditors, auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders) and inclusion of the rules and procedures for making decisions in corporate affairs are identified with the help of Corporate Governance mechanism and guidelines. The need to make corporate governance in Nigeria transparent was felt after the high profile corporate governance failure. Thus, Corporate Governance is not just company administration but more than that and includes monitoring the actions, policies, practices, and decisions of corporations, their agents, and affected stakeholders thereby ensuring fair, efficient and transparent functioning of the corporate management system. By this paper, we intend to examine the concept of corporate governance in Nigeria with regard to the provisions of corporate governance under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2004. The paper willalso highlight the importance and need of corporate governance in Nigeria. We will also discuss the emergence of corporate governance in India.

Health / The Sidelined Role Of Fathers In Exclusive Breastfeeding by marigot(f): 9:55am On Aug 14, 2018
There are certain roles expected of our fathers that actually contributes to state of health of the mothers and the unborn child as well as feeding the baby with breast milk exclusively for six months
I get bothered and feel sad seeing men showing no concern to their wives or fail to adjust to some temporary changes during the few time their wives uses in breastfeeding the new born baby.
Babies are not bought at the market, neither a software downloaded from Google play store or App world.
Study conducted by the Federal ministry of health in collaboration with UNICEF, revealed that inadequate and low rate of breastfeeding in children results to millions avoidable cases of childhood diarrhea and pneumonia in children which usually lead to more than hundred thousand child death.
Many fathers are of the view that breastfeeding is strictly confined to women and babies. They see their role as that of a passive or neutral observer who has little influence on the process.
A common complaint from fathers of breastfed babies is that they tend to feel excluded from the intimacy of the nursing dyad. But fathers actually have tremendous potential to either facilitate or undermine the success of breastfeeding. Understanding the importance of their role is the first step in equipping fathers to help their breastfeeding partners.
Father’s roles to support breastfeeding have been started from pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding till it lasts. Those father’s role include role of seeking information about infant feeding, involvement in decision making to feed children, engaged in labour, have a positive attitude in marriage, and involved in various activities of child care.
Breastfeeding can be emotionally demanding, physically exhausting, and uncomfortable at times. Virtually all new mothers experience doubts about their ability to care for a helpless newborn. Breastfeeding mothers harbour additional fears about the adequacy of their milk supply or the correctness of their breastfeeding technique, or their ability to overcome lactation problems. Fathers can play a key role in bolstering their breastfeeding partner's confidence by showering them with compliments, praising their efforts, and offering words of encouragement.
Why many men feel left out when their wives breastfeed, a father can help in so many ways that it's hard to imagine. A father can go to the baby when he or she awakens and bring the hungry infant to his wife. While the mother is nursing, he can pour her a nutritious beverage, massage her shoulders, compliment her, and lovingly admire his nursing baby. After the first breast, he can burp the baby and help arouse the infant for the second side. When the feeding is complete, the father can change the infant and put him or her down to sleep.
Fathers should know their responsibilities and encourage their wives to engage in exclusive breastfeeding.

Health / Malaria Poses Challenges During Rainy Season by marigot(f): 11:09am On Aug 09, 2018
Malaria remains an acute public health problem in the country. Malaria mortality rate increased daily and it is during rainy season that morbidity and mortality are on the increase as a result of malaria. Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite which spread through the bite of an infected female mosquito.
According to Dr. Bolaji Olusayo, a medical practitioner at Oke Ado specialist hospital says the prevalence of malaria is higher in children during rainy season as a result of climate change.
According to him, children under 5 and 10 years should wear warm clothes to school and mothers should always endeavour to make their children sleep under mosquito treated nets.
He said managing malaria poses challenges in Nigeria every year, especially with the coming of the rainy season.
“The World Health Organization directed malaria intervention on the under fives whose immunities are lower; this burden has now shifted to the under 10, who were hitherto neglected’” he added.
“The poor masses are also affected due to ineffective and costly way of treatment, which cannot be afforded by the parents.”
“Children also miss school. Absenteeism leads to lower Intelligent Quotient in a child, and loss or reduction in productivity of workers,” he said.
He added that the National Malaria Treatment Policy in Nigeria does not allow malaria to be treated without first being diagnose through the microscope. Treatment of malaria without microscopy is tantamount to incompetence.
He has urged parents to take necessary measures in tackling malaria during the rainy season. The insecticide treated nets provide a physical barrier against mosquitoes; also, because they are impregnated with insecticide, they can reduce the lifespan of a mosquito, decreasing the chance of it transmitting malaria to another person.

Health / Lot Of Nigerians Suffers From Asthma, Says Expert by marigot(f): 11:37am On Jul 31, 2018
In an interview with Dr. Akinpelu Gbegbin of Divine Grace Medical Hospital said lot of Nigerians suffers from asthma. Asthma is an inflammatory disease affecting the airways that carry air to and from the lungs. People who suffer from this chronic condition (long-lasting or recurrent) are said to be asthmatic.
Dr. Gbegbin, disclosed to eDokita team that Nigeria alone, 15 million suffers from the lung disease out of over 400 million others believed to be suffering from asthma worldwide.
He noted that asthma is the most common chronic disease in children; it is characterized by recurring respiratory systems such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing (a whistling or squeaky sound in your chest when you breathe, especially when exhaling).
“One of the challenges is that, many people do not know how to prevent the ailment. For the prevention, it is important to identify asthma triggers and take steps to avoid them. Some asthma triggers may include: air pollution, allergies, cold air, cold or flu virus, sinusitis, smoke, fragrances among others.”
He added that effective treatment of allergic asthma includes identifying and avoiding allergens that trigger symptoms, using drug therapies and developing an emergency action plan for severe attacks.
He however urged the Federal Government to give asthma treatment the much needed attention. He called on the government to train more doctors and nurses and other health care practitioners on the management of asthma. No one with asthma or allergies needs to suffer.
The medical practitioner also called on the government at all levels to subsidize the high cost of drug for the treatment of patients. “Some of these drugs are not affordable and quite a number of them are not available in the country. “We want a situation in which the government will bring the drugs down to the level of common asthmatic patients.

Health / Know Your Partner Genotype Before Marriage To Save Your Unborn Baby by marigot(f): 4:07pm On Jul 25, 2018
This topic reminds me of a novel I read long ago where a guy was drenched in the middle of a rainy night, trying to woo a lady who for reasons I cannot recall was not interested in the relationship. The guy remarked that anybody in love is a fool, and he, at that moment, was the biggest fool of them all. I have seen sickle cell carriers in crisis; it is heart wrenching and frustrating. Just wondering aloud now, why will two people see potential pains and dangers ahead and still want to get married?

Parent should not bring a child into this world to experience such torture; you do not want to see a loved one in such agony, if it is avoidable. It is okay that our forebears married out of ignorance. Why will you do it now knowing full well the implications? That for me is a heinous crime against humanity, especially the unborn.

Nigerians seem to be aware of the existence of genotypes, in rural populations, there appears to be widespread ignorance about the consequences of not paying attention to genotype compatibility. Many people don’t know that for each pregnancy in which both parents are AS, there is a 25% chance of them giving birth to a child with the sickle cell genotype. The implication of this statistic is that each pregnancy is a mutually exclusive event and the chances of having a sickle cell baby does not reduce with successive pregnancies. Every pregnancy has a 1 in 4 chance of producing a baby with this disorder.

While 70% of the world’s population are carriers, Nigeria has the highest prevalence of sickle cell trait in the world, with 25% of adults being carriers of the trait. Nigeria also accounts for 50% of sickle cell disease (SCD) births worldwide, and of every 1,000 babies born in Nigeria, 20 are born with Sickle Cell Disease, which means that they carry the SS genotype.

Sickle cell disease is a life-long illness. The severity of the disease varies widely from person to person. In high-income countries, the life expectancy of a person with SCD is 40–60 years, thanks to advances in the diagnosis and care of SCD. However, in Nigeria, the life expectancy of children born with SCD was found to be as low as 23 years. During this projected lifespan, people with SCD are subjected to unpredictable bouts of intense pain and regular hospitalization. Over a lifetime, SCD can harm a person’s spleen, brain, eyes, lungs, liver, heart, kidneys, joints, bones or skin.

There is not yet a cure for Sickle Cell Disease and that is why prevention is highly needed and it is advisable for intending couples starting a family to get a genotype test. A couple who both carry the AS genotype are advised not to start a family. They can choose to adopt children rather than take the risk of giving birth to children with sickle cell disease.

A genotype is the entire genetic constitution of an individual. The genetic makeup of an organism or group of organisms with reference to a single trait, set of traits, or an entire complex of traits. In a nutshell: your genotype is your complete heritable genetic identity; the sum total of genes transmitted from parent to offspring.

There are four hemoglobin genotypes (hemoglobin pairs/formations) in humans: AA, AS, SS and AC (uncommon). SS and AC are the abnormal genotypes or the sickle cells. We all have a specific pair of this hemoglobin in our blood which we inherited from both parents. AA can marry anybody, AS is better off with AA and AS and AS, AS and AC are too risky

It is imperative to know your spouse genotype. This is to prevent serious health issues for the children which can affect the marriage. Also, it is not suitable for sickle cell patient (SS) to get married to a carrier of the sickle cell gene (AS) because of the 50% chance of having babies with the sickle cell gene in each pregnancy. However, a sickle cell patient (SS) can marry an individual with no trait of the Sickle Cell gene (AA).

Courting parties need lot of sensitization on this topic and also prayers, intervention (not interference), good counsel and emotional support because many of their decisions flow from the heart rather than the head. They are susceptible to manipulation and emotional accidents.

Health / I Am In A Critical Condition;what Will The World Say About Me When I Die- Wizkid by marigot(f): 2:51pm On Jul 25, 2018
Adegbemiro Adeola, a 400 level student of one of the leading Federal Universities in Nigeria, lamented how health services rendered by the university’s hospital affected her education.

In an interview with Adeola, she explained how she came across the name wizkid; said she had always had interest in school politics. When I was in 300 level, I contested as treasurer in the department of political science, and used the name wizkid to pull crowd. I won the election and ever since then people started calling me wizkid.

Adeola added, I cannot forget in my life as I thought I had met my savior when I eventually opened my eyes in the hospital not knowing that Satan was at work again.

According to an eye witness, Adeola’s cousin and hostel mate, who narrated the incident to one of the eDokita news correspondents, Mr. Olaniyan Oluwaseun said, “Adeola is the only child of her mother and she is academically sound”. That day, her room-mate in school hostel came to informed me that Adeola has been hospitalized in school clinic, I ran to the clinic along with her past medical records, I showed the doctor the previous tests we did prior to her ailment, but to my surprise he disregarded the test results because they were not done in the school clinic.

After series of questions and examination, she was admitted and the doctor told her that she had typhoid along with cough. He prescribed drugs and cough syrup and told her to get it in the school pharmacy which she did, but we all contemplated that the examination may not be comprehensive enough because the symptoms looked more like what happen to her brother few years back (tuberculosis). At the same time we were scared of being told it’s a reoccurred TB. After several weeks she discovered that there was no improvement, now it has gotten worse. Adeola started sweating at night, lost appetite for food, had serious headache that paracetamol could not even relieve, weight loss and difficulties in breathing.

“Adeola said “I am in a critical condition; What will the world say about me when I die” I lost hope and was thinking about heaven.

According to her brother Akinolu, “Adeola kept complaining and we all lost belief in the doctors attending to her”. We took her to University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan where she did series of test; such as sputum m/c/s, chest x-ray, weight and others I don’t know the name. The test result showed that she had tuberculosis (TB) and she was then placed on another Anti tuberculosis drugs.”

Adeola gave a testimony in her church said she gives all the glory to God for saving her life but the sad thing there was that the negligence and incompetence of the doctor caused her to have an extra year in school.

Health / Negligence Of Doctors Duty Caused My Daughter's Death-mrs. Mbamara by marigot(f): 2:42pm On Jul 25, 2018
The family of Mbamara has called for better approach by the government and other stakeholders in preventing and curtailing the negligence and recklessness of health practitioners in the country. The management of one of the top hospitals in Nigeria cut the life of Adaora Mbamara off as a result of poor self-examination.
According to an eye witnessed who narrated the sad incident to one of eDokita news correspondents said, “It was a very terrible story remembering how the beautiful future of Adaora, a twin of about 15 years was cut off”. There is need to improve on the commitment of the health care practitioners towards the lives of the patients. There should be criteria to evaluate the health care practitioners in the country as some of them lack the basic human relations ethics in their various fields; this made the patients in their care endangered. He added
“I ran into Mrs. Mbamara, the mother of the deceased in the hospital on that faithful day, she told me Adaora was on admission. I visited her in the ward and what I met got me dazed, she was shrunk and her tummy was protruding.” He said
In an interview with one of the family friends of Mbamara, who is a nurse, told our team that Adaora was diagnosed of ovarian cyst and that she was going to under-go operation. We were all happy as the operation was successful and she was discharged after few weeks when the doctors certified her fit to go home.
She added that few days after her discharge; “I went back to the hospital to enquire if the Doctors carried out tests on the second ovary, just to prevent future problem and why she was not placed on medications.” They gave me reasons which I considered flimsy, that made me ask if they check of her condition not being cancerous, some of the Doctors told me they did while one of them got angry with my questions and said my questions are unnecessary.
However, months after Adaora started losing weight and some scaring symptoms started re-occurring. She was puffy all over. We rushed her to a near-by hospital and she was admitted. After some tests were done, the doctor said the second ovary had developed a problem that she cannot under-go another operation within short period. It was sad that Adaora passed away that night.
Mrs. Mbamara burst into tears has she considered herself living without Adora is a life without hope, she told the eDokita that Negligence of doctors duty caused her daughter's death.

Health / Nonchalant Attitudes In Medical Settings Could Kill Patients by marigot(f): 2:35pm On Jul 25, 2018
An unexpected occurrence happened in one of the Federal owned hospital in Ondo state, where a finalist nearly lost his life due to management prayer meeting.

According to an anonymous source said, the staff of the health center normally holds a prayer/meeting on the last Friday of every month during work hours which is compulsory for all staff to attend. At this time, treatment given to patients must be on hold and no emergency cases will be attended to, either the one on the hospital bed or new cases.

According to him, said during the last meeting, the clinic was crowded with a lot of concerned patients who came for treatments, but unfortunately for them nobody paid attention to them.

He added, while this was on, a boy was rushed down with a bike from an exam hall, the boy was unconscious and everybody round him except the staff of the hospital.

According to the boy close pal, Mr. Jide Olaosebikan said he once heard that the staff of the hospital had issues on how to treat human lives, but this very day he confirmed it was not just a speculation but the real fact.

“I thought within myself that such critical case deserves an exemption, waiting for someone to attend to him and at least resuscitate him and give the necessary first aid treatments but to my surprise, the doctors, nurses and other staff continued their meeting as if it was more important than my friend’s life, he added.”

Speaking to one of our correspondents, Mr. Olaosebikan said he found it difficult to understand how such apathy to life could be seen among health workers who swore oath to save lives.

He concluded that fortunately for his friend, he regained his consciousness and we rushed him to a private hospital where he is receiving adequate medical attention.
