Crime / Father Defiles 10-year-old Daughter In Lagos by Marisa1: 3:26am On Feb 07, 2023
Following the arrest of a lecturer over an allegation of having unlawful sexual intercourse with his biological daughter in Lagos State, the state Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has decried the rise in such cases in the state.

The Executive Secretary for the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, in a statement, said the agency got to know about the development when the victim’s mother reported the case to officials of the agency.

The statement said, “The case was reported by the mother of the victim to the agency in January 2023. According to the information the DSVA gathered, the last abuse happened on December 30, 2022.

“During the court proceedings at Ogba, the mother of the victim allegedly said that her husband had stopped being intimate with her since 2018 and anytime she tried to address it, it always resulted in him physically assaulting her.

“The lecturer was arraigned before Magistrate B. V. Osunsanmi on February 3, 2023, at the Samuel Ilori Magistrate Court 1, Ogba, for allegedly defiling his 10-year-old biological daughter and was also alleged to have been having carnal knowledge of her since 2018.

“He was charged on two counts of defilement and sexual assault by penetrations which were contrary to and punishable under Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

Vivour-Adeniyi said the defendant’s plea was not taken, adding that the court ruled that the perpetrator be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, pending the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ legal advice.

She also noted that the case was adjourned to March 6, 2023.

Vivour-Adeniyi, however, urged residents to continue to break the culture of silence by reporting cases of abuse, stressing that all forms of abuse were crimes against the state.

She said holistic support would be made available to survivors as perpetrators would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Business / 50% Pos Operators Close Shops Over Naira Scarcity by Marisa1: 3:16am On Feb 07, 2023
Over 50 per cent of Point of Sale operators have closed their shops as scarcity of new and old naira notes bites harder, it has been learnt.

The National Chief Aggregating Officer of the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria, Hussein Olanrewaju, who made this disclosure on Monday to SUPERS.ng, said the impact of the ongoing shortage of new and old naira notes had worsened the plight of their members.

While noting that agents should be given preferential treatment in access to the new notes, he lamented that some Nigerians had taken advantage of the situation to charge unreasonable fees.

He said, “Operators are licensed bodies that provide platforms which agents leverage on. Currently, agents do not have any preferential treatment to deliver this service, hence, more than 50 per cent of agent shops have been closed down as we speak.

“Some agents, however, go extreme to buy these monies and those who do not, move from one ATM point to another incurring lot of cost in the process which will also reflect on the service charge.

“It’s worthy to note that some Nigerians have taken advantage of this situation to charge people unreasonable charges.”

Hussein further stressed that the ongoing policy meant to swap cash in unbanked areas might not achieve its mandate due to the low number of agents selected for the scheme.

He added that including more agents remained the best solution to easing the financial stress Nigerians were currently facing.

“As designed by the CBN, the exercise is going as expected. However, it doesn’t really translate to profit for agents. Out of over 1.4 million agents, only 30,000 agents were picked to participate in the cash swap programme, the number is too small and can barely effect any change.

“Agents are the ones available and accessible to ease the financial stress Nigerians are currently facing,” he concluded.

Education / “i’m Slipping Into Depression” Student In ‘séx-for-grade’ Video Finally Reacted by Marisa1: 3:45am On Feb 04, 2023
28-year-old Ogechi Okoroafor is the graduating female student of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State according to SUPERS.ng findings, seen in a viral video in which she is believed to have credited God and her private parts for the successful completion of her academic programme at the institution. In this interview with CHIDIEBUBE OKEOMA, she responds to the widespread controversy generated by the video

What course did you study at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State?

I studied Business Administration for the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma. I am a graduating student.

In a recent viral video, you attributed your successful completion of the programme to the help of God and your private parts. Can you explain exactly what you meant by that?

No. The whole thing was blown out of proportion. I never meant to say God and my pu**y made me a graduate. It was a mistake, a slip of the tongue. I was carried away by the euphoria of the moment; the joy of becoming a graduate after years in the school. I spoke out of excitement and gratitude to God, my family and everybody who supported me in the academic adventure. What I intended saying was that God and my popsy (slang for father) made me graduate. My father and God are the major influences in my life in SUPERS.ng findings. As my father’s only daughter and the last child, I am too fond of him. We are very close. He is so dear to me. My intention was to say God and my daddy, which we call popsy, made me a graduate. I don’t know why people, especially journalists, are blowing it out of proportion.

Have you slept with any lecturer or staff of the polytechnic in exchange for grades or academic favours?

How can I? Never! Who doesn’t know that Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, is one of the best polytechnics in Nigeria in terms of academic excellence and strict adherence to moral standards? Our rector is a priest of the Anglican Church and a moralist. Our lecturers are intellectually and morally strict. You are a journalist; take your investigative journalism to my school and department and ask questions about me. I am a very serious student. I attended lectures, I did my independent assignments and participated fully in group assignments. I was a serious students. I am not a wayward girl.

Have you been summoned by the polytechnic management over your claims?

Yes, I was summoned this week. I appeared before a panel in the school. The video was played to me and I was asked to react. I told them it was a mistake and that I was deeply sorry by whatever my mistake had caused the school. I apologised to them and I believe they saw how remorseful I was. It was never my intention to do anything that would impeach the integrity of the school. I know products of our school are respected all over the world and I wouldn’t do anything that would tarnish the hard-earned integrity of the institution.

Are you willing to resit your exams if the school decides on that route?

It hasn’t got to that point and I pray it doesn’t get to that point. I have apologised to the school and I pray they find a place in their heart to forgive me. This is a father and daughter issue and I hope it would be settled that way. Let me say that I am ready to undertake any punishment by the polytechnic in order to show them how genuinely remorseful I am. Even it means coming everyday to sweep the school compound and any other punishment; I will do it just to prove how remorseful I am. I am a very serious student of the school. I finished with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.8 in my ND programme. I am a very serious student. I just pray that the school management forgive me. I know I messed up and everybody is free to condemn me but let it be known that I am genuinely remorseful.

Will you seek legal redress if the school decides not to allow you graduate?

For what? It won’t get to that point. I don’t have plans and contacts to go to court. The lawyer, who is speaking on my behalf, is like a big brother to me. I believe that the polytechnic will forgive me. We can settle it amicably. There is no reason to go to court. I pray I am forgiven.

What kind of home are you from?

I am from a responsible family.  I am from Umueze Umuhu community in the Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State. My parents are alive but not strong, in terms of health. I have three elder brothers. I am the last child and the only daughter. I am 28 years old.

How are your parents taking this whole situation?

My parents are not aware of it. My parents are in the village. My father is not too healthy; likewise my mother. My mother doesn’t walk well. The school management called my mother and requested her presence but the truth is that my mother has issues with her knees and can’t walk to a reasonable distance. She called me and told me that the school requested her presence and asked me to handle it. My oldest brother called me on this issue and asked me to be very careful. I am from a very responsible family. I regret this whole drama. I am going into depression. My name is flying around for the wrong reasons. Please help me beg the school to forgive me. I am truly remorseful.

Business / Naira Redesign: Buhari Consigns Nigerians To Seven More Days Of Hardship - Punch by Marisa1: 3:32am On Feb 04, 2023
Some angry citizens, on Friday, condemned the Federal Government, according to findings by Punch the Central Bank of Nigeria and Deposit Money Banks for subjecting them to hardship over the scarcity of new naira notes and the astronomical hike in the pump price of petrol as a result of acute scarcity.

While some vented their anger by embarking on street protests, others attacked bank branches and facilities.

There were protests in Ibadan Oyo State capital, on Friday, by frustrated citizens over their inability to withdraw money in their bank accounts as well as the lingering fuel crisis and the attendant rising cost.

Similar protests took place in Lagos, Ondo and Edo states, sparking apprehension that the situation could degenerate in the coming days.

Amidst the confusion, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), expressed doubts about the commitment of banks to the success of the new naira policy and accused some of them of being inefficient and making the policy unnecessarily difficult through “selfishness and greed."

He also asked to be given seven days to resolve the problems associated with the scarcity of the currency.

Citizens lament hardship

At the UBA branch in Ibafo, Ogun State, a housewife, Mrs Silifat Oseni, used expletives to describe those in government for subjecting her to so much hardship as she was finding it difficult to buy foodstuffs to feed her family.

She said, “What have we done to President Buhari and the CBN governor that they are punishing us like this? They have collected our old notes and are not supplying the new notes, yet the prices of fuel and food items have hit the rooftop.

“I was in the market on Thursday and the meat and pepper sellers refused to accept transfers as a means of payment. They insisted on me paying cash, which I didn’t have. I came to the bank this morning (Friday) to withdraw just N5,000 so that my family can feed, but the queue at the ATM gallery is so long and the security guards did not allow me to go inside the banking hall. I don’t know what to do next.”

A commercial motorist, who attempted to buy fuel at a filling station in the Ketu area of Lagos State, Lamidi Adetunji, expressed frustration at his inability to get the product, adding that the attendants refused to collect old naira notes from him.

Adetunji said, “I waited for over one hour for the tanker to discharge the fuel and when it was my turn to purchase the product, the attendant said the PoS was not working and I tried four times to transfer money to her without success.

“I was asked to go to a PoS operator outside the station and the woman told me that she would take N1,000 on the N10,000 that I wanted to withdraw. I didn’t have a choice. We can’t increase transport fares too much because people don’t have money to pay.”

A civil servant with the Ogun State Government, Saheed Shomorin, who was at the GTBank branch in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta according to Findings, said he spent over three hours on Friday before he succeeded in withdrawing N10,000 from the ATM, adding that the situation was affecting his productivity as he would not be able to report in the office.

An employee of the Boluwaduro Local Government Council, Osun State, Mrs Oluyemisi Ajiteru, said, “We in the rural areas are finding it difficult to get the so-called new money and they are insisting that we must deposit the old ones. People are really suffering here.

“On Wednesday, I had to travel from my base in Otan Ayegbaju to go to Ikirun to withdraw N2,000 from a PoS agent, who added N400 as his charge. I spent N600 to travel to Ikirun and back to my base and I am just a junior worker. How will I cope now?”

A trader in Nyanya, Mallam Abubakar Audu, expressed anger at the hardship being suffered in the country, saying, “I can’t get money to take home to my two wives and children because my customers are insisting on transferring money to me. Though I have an account, where will I get cash to spend?

“The situation is dangerous now and people may just embark on spontaneous protests, which may disrupt the elections that the government is labouring hard to organise. President Buhari, though he is my kinsman, has not done well at all. He appears uncaring about what will happen to the nation after his exit in May.”

In Enugu, one of our correspondents reports that some customers now stay till around 2am for ATMs to be loaded, while others come to the banks around the same time so that they could be among the first to make withdraws when banks start work by 8am on a daily basis.

A bank customer, who gave his name as Emeka Okorie, said he had been going to the ATMs for three days to make withdrawals but had not been successful because of the huge crowd that besieged the galleries.

Okorie said, “Today makes it the fourth time I have been going to the bank. I left my house by 4am so that I could be able to make a withdrawal.

“I was even told that some people slept in the ATM gallery because the only machine dispensing money stopped working by 2am.”

Another customer, Moses Chidiebube, described the naira redesign policy as demonic and evil.
Another bank customer, Kingsley Obi, also lamented the suffering Nigerians were going through to get cash.

He said, “I went to the bank around 1.30am yesterday (Thursday) only to withdraw N20,000 around 11am. So, people have left their businesses to stay in ATM galleries. This is the worst policy of this administration.

“When Buhari came as a military Head of State in 1983, because of his inept administration, Nigerians suffered. Now he is at it again.”

In Onitsha, Nnewi, Obosi, Ekwulobia and some parts of Awka in Anambra State, customers besieged the banks as early as 6am in order to get favourable positions in the queues.

It was lamentation from the customers as they were yet to be attended to as of 1:45pm.

Most of the banks shut their banking halls to customers as early as 9am, while allowing only those who had come to deposit cash into the halls.

In Niger State, most of the banks had yet to implement the CBN directive to commence payment of cash over the counter.

Banks premises in Lokoja, Kogi State, were similarly besieged on Friday by frustrated customers in search of elusive cash, which had been in short supply for the past two weeks.

At the GTBank Fenn junction, a large crowd of customers thronged the ATM gallery, with only one machine dispensing cash to customers.

Treasure Atabor, a customer in the queue told Saturday PUNCH that he arrived at the bank around 5am to beat the crowd but was surprised to meet a long queue.

Similar queues were noticed at the UBA opposite Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba.

At the Zenith Bank, Ankpa, angry residents expressed displeasure with the treatment meted out to them as they were denied access to their money

Most commercial banks within the Sokoto metropolis closed their gates as customers struggled to enter the premises on Friday.

Customers attack banks

Saturday PUNCH gathered that a machete-wielding man attacked a branch of the UBA in the Ibafo area of Ogun State on Thursday by scaling the fence of a neighbouring building to get onto the bank’s premises in broad daylight and succeeded in destroying some decorative glasses before he was overpowered by four policemen.

A security guard explained that the measure became necessary in view of the incident with the machete-wielding customer the previous day.

The guard explained, “We have been instructed not to allow many people into the banking hall in order to avert disaster. Yesterday (Thursday), an angry customer, who wielded a cutlass, scaled the fence and jumped onto the bank premises and broke some glass before he was overwhelmed by four policemen and taken to the station.

“We were lucky that the security doors were functional. Only God knows the havoc he would have wreaked if he had got into the banking hall with the weapon he was holding.”

At the Access Bank branch in Ibafo, it was observed that customers were not at the ATM gallery as the machines were not dispensing cash. It was learnt that the branch did not open for normal banking operations for three days because a female customer created a scene there on Tuesday by stripping to her underwear due to frustration of not getting cash as she claimed that her children were starving at home and she could not get money to buy food for them.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that there were also attacks on a branch of Fidelity Bank on Victoria Island, Lagos; Access Bank on Broad Street, Lagos Island; UBA branch in Oke-Arin, Lagos Island; and First Bank, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos.

Similarly, the Wema Bank, Agodi Gate branch, Ibadan, was attacked by youths, who broke the windows and the ATM gallery with stones and sticks in a viral video obtained by Saturday PUNCH.

A corporate affairs manager of a Tier-1 bank, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, confirmed the attacks to one of our correspondents, but said it was too early to take count as reports from the branches were still coming in.

“Angry customers and hoodlums are destroying bank branches. I can confirm that our bank has suffered some attack, but the reports are just coming from our branches. Give me some time to get the reports so that I can be categorical about the attacks,” he said.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Egyptian Competition Authority on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote trade fairness between both countries.

According to SUPERS.ng findings, the process began in 2019 when the FCCPC and the ECA initiated discussions on enhancing competition law and policy between both parties.

“In this regard, the FCCPC and ECA have solidified their engagements in a Memorandum of Understanding.

“Considering that both countries are part of the largest economies in Africa, and the mutuality of both agencies’ objectives and mandates, the FCCPC and ECA on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at the Egyptian Competition Authority’s Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, executed the MoU. SUPERS.ng observed that both agencies recognise and acknowledge the purpose, and benefits this collaboration portends – strengthen economies and promote shared prosperity.”

The Executive Vice Chairman, FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera welcomed the attendance of Nigeria’s ambassador to Egypt, thanked his colleagues at COMESA for their support and appreciated the warm hospitality of the Egyptian Competition Authority for hosting both the MoU execution and the African Heads of Competition Dialogue Meeting.

Irukera said,“Signing this MoU today in a manner of speaking is an end somehow as it concludes the significant work of engagement, negotiation and modification. By the same token, it marks the formal beginning of a framework and platform to increase trade between our countries, promote market fairness and ensure our continent progresses from the standpoints of choices for consumers, market entry and stability.”

Politics / Obi, Kwankwaso Won’t Step Down For Atiku – Parties by Marisa1: 3:13am On Feb 02, 2023
Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party on Wednesday according to SUPERS.ng said their presidential candidates would not step down for their counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

The two opposition parties said this as the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council advised the LP standard bearer, Peter Obi and his NNPP counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso, not to trust Atiku.

The PCC warning was a sequel to claims by the PDP presidential candidate that he was in talks with Obi and Kwankwaso ahead of the February 25 poll.

Atiku in an interview with the BBC Hausa disclosed that talks were ongoing between him and the LP and NNPP candidates.

But the ex-vice president did not disclose the nature of the talks or the terms of the agreement if any.

However, commenting on the reported talks, the Spokesman of the APC Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, urged Nigerians to ignore the former vice-president, describing him as a man that cannot be trusted even by the leaders of his own party.

Speaking in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Wednesday, Keyamo said, “Atiku is lying; he is not in talks with anyone. Atiku cannot be trusted and that is why he can’t keep his party together.

‘’He has not been able to reach an agreement with the aggrieved governors of his party because those governors know that he does not keep his word.’’

“Kwankwaso left PDP because he was humiliated in the North-West. The PDP treated Peter Obi badly and the man left. These are the men Atiku is giving the impression that they are ready to work with him. It is all lies,” he insisted.

The Director-General of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Oshuntokun, in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja on Wednesday, said  Obi had no intention of striking a deal with Atiku except the latter agreed to step down for the former Anambra State governor.

Asked to speak on the said talks, the DG simply asked, “How can that be? To what purpose? For Obi to come and support a ticket, that is a fundamental threat to the national unity of Nigeria?

“Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is welcome to renounce his ticket and throw his considerable political weight behind us. No individual ambition should override the North/ South rotation convention, especially against the backdrop of the damage that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has wreaked on the unity of Nigeria with his apartheid-style nepotism.’’

Dismissing Atiku’s overtures to Obi, the Spokesman for the LP PCC, Kenneth Okonkwo, tweeted, “It is gratifying to hear that Atiku is considering stepping down for Peter Obi in the presidential race.

‘’Coming on the heels of Atiku’s confession of using Special Purpose Vehicles to siphon Nigeria’s money, according to Michael Achimugu, this is the wisest thing to do him. That is the only way they talk he is initiating that can make sense.

“Please disregard any other assertion from the lying PDP because the only honourable thing left for Atiku to do is an unconditional stepping down for Peter Obi to usher in a new Nigeria.’’

Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, Major Agbor, urged Atiku to join the Kwankwaso train, saying, “he is not on the ground. He is the one to step down for our candidate, not the other way around. There are talks and there would be no talks in this direction except the former vice-president is throwing his weight of support for Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso.”

But the Special Adviser on Media to Atiku, Mazi Paul Ibe, told The PUNCH that the PDP standard bearer had repeatedly reiterated his commitment to form a government of national unity, stressing that that may have informed his decision to open a broad-based conversation with the other contestants.

He argued that both Obi and Kwankwaso would not make an impact as they would only get marginal votes in the February 25 presidential election.

Asked if the PDP candidate is seeking the support of the two former governors should a run-off becomes inevitable; Ibe stated confidently that Atiku ‘’will coast home to victory on the first ballot.’’

Business / Sokoto, zamfara, katsina Border Residents Trade In CFA Followin New Naira Scarcity by Marisa1: 3:06am On Feb 02, 2023
Residents of border communities in states including Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina,  Adamawa and Kwara have opted for the CFA franc following the scarcity of the new naira notes across the country.

The residents, including traders and commercial drivers, are also rejecting the old naira notes, insisting that customers who do not have the new redesigned currency must pay for goods and services with CFAs.

According to findings by SUPERS.ng The CFA franc is the legal tender in eight West African countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo, which make up the West African Economic and Monetary Union, otherwise known as the Union Économique et Monétaire Ouest Africaine.

Findings by SUPERS.ng indicated that businessmen and traders in the Zurmi and Shinkafi local government areas of Zamfara State, which border the Niger Republic, prefer the franc to the naira.

Investigation revealed that traders in the two LGAs had been selling their commodities in CFA due to fear that they might not get the new naira notes.

A cattle dealer, Musa Shehu, said he stopped receiving the Nigerian currency since the Central Bank of Nigeria announced the deadline for the swap of the N1,000, N500 and N200 notes.

He stated, “I have since stopped receiving the old naira notes because I don’t have an account and I can’t go to the bank.”

A trader in Shinkafi town, who shuttles between Nigeria and Niger Republic, explained that most of his customers paid with the CFA.

“I cannot collect old naira notes and give out my commodities to any customer. But I will collect new naira notes and CFA because I am afraid of losing my money if the time for the exchange expires,’’ the trader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

A grain seller in Dada village in Zurmi Local Government, Muhammadu Isa, disclosed that he stopped selling grains in the Nigerian currency after the CBN’s policy on new naira notes was unveiled.

He said that he sold only to those who possessed CFAs to avoid losing money as ‘’my father did in 1983 when the naira notes were hurriedly changed by the then Major General Muhammadu Buhari regime.’’

Isa explained that his late father lost all his money when Buhari changed the national currency in 1983.

The grain trader insisted that he would not accept the old naira notes as there was no bank or Point of Service terminal in his community where he could withdraw the new currencies.

“You see since our people and those from the Niger Republic are coming to buy the grains with the CFA, I see no reason why I should collect old naira notes. If anybody wants to buy grains from me, he must pay in CFA or forget it. I will not collect old naira notes because I don’t know what to do with them after the expiration of the deadline,” he noted.

In a related development, commercial drivers who ply the Niger Republic from Zurmi and Shinkafi LGAs have also stopped collecting the old notes.

They justified their decision with the argument that the CFA was the only legal tender accepted by the people along the Nigeria-Niger borders.

A driver, Alhaji Hamisu, stated that passengers had to pay in CFA if they wanted to travel to the Niger Republic or return to Nigeria ‘’because the old naira notes are unacceptable as legal tender.’’

Hamisu said, “I have on several occasions refused to collect the old naira notes from my passengers because I have no time to go to the bank or PoS to get the new notes.

“Another problem is that you can’t buy fuel with the old naira notes in Niger republic; as such, no commercial driver on cross-border journeys will agree to take the old notes from passengers.

“I was almost stranded in Malbaza town in Niger Republic when I wanted to buy fuel with the old naira notes because we have been doing so before the change of the Nigerian currency.

“I went to the filling station as usual and bought 30 litres of fuel and brought out the old notes but the fuel attendant told me that he would not accept the notes.

“I pleaded with him but he was not ready to collect the money from me. I was lucky as one of the commercial drivers, who is also my friend, came to buy fuel and he had enough CFAs. I bought the CFA from him and settled the fuel attendant.”

Sokoto border traders

Also, our correspondent discovered that border communities in Sokoto State preferred to sell their products in CFA due in part to the non-availability of the new notes and the continuous loss of naira value.

Speaking with The PUNCH, Mallam Sidi Isa, who trades in cattle in Illela, a border community with the Niger Republic, said he preferred the franc because of the introduction of the new naira notes and the cashless policy.

Also speaking, Mr Jamiu Ola, a motor mechanic, argued that the CFA holds more value than the naira.

“I prefer CFA due to the fact that it is hardly devalued unlike our own naira which has been devalued,” he added.

A businessman, Mallam Haruna Abdulazeez, stated, “I shifted my business to the Niger Republic when I realised I can’t cope with the economy of this country anymore.

“If I buy goods from Nigeria and take same to Niger Republic, I make profits due to the value after the exchange. Even if you take sachet water there, you will make your profits due to the exchange rate.”

A Sokoto resident, Muhammad Auwal, submitted that the CFA holds more value than the naira, hence his preference for foreign currency.

“I normally exchange my naira for CFA as it is not reasonable for someone to keep naira at home due to loss of value,’’ he declared.

Adamawa cattle dealers

Speaking in an interview, the Chairman of Mubi International Cattle Market in Adamawa State, Jafaru Hamman, lamented the scarcity of newly redesigned naira notes, adding that the difficulties in getting the currency had affected commerce at the border communities.

The problem, according to him, is that most traders in Mubi are accustomed to cash transactions and the cashless policy may take time to get mass support.

Commenting on the decision of Adamawa communities to opt for the franc over the naira, a cattle dealer, Jafaru Hamman, explained that even before the CBN policy, some traders were using the West African CFA in business transactions.

He, however, noted the volume of trade in foreign currency was minimal before the introduction of the new naira redesign policy.

Jafaru said the development had made it increasingly difficult for most traders to get the new currency, thereby stifling their business operations.

Politics / EFCC To Raid Lagos, Kaduna, P’harcourt Currency Hawkers by Marisa1: 2:38am On Feb 01, 2023
The commission indicated this on Tuesday when it disclosed that it had arrested members of a syndicate of currency racketeers trading in the redesigned naira notes at Zone 4, Wuse and Dei-Dei axis of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Abuja suspects were nabbed according to findings by SUPERS.ng during an operation to halt the illicit currency trading carried out by the anti-graft agency between Saturday and Monday.

The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday.

Findings from EFCC officials showed its operatives had penned down some commercial nerve centres in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kaduna, where currency hawkers are having a field day.

The EFCC planned raids came on the heels of similar raids of currency hawkers and racketeers by personnel of the Department of State Services.

The EFCC planned raids came a day after the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefile, said the apex bank would collaborate with law enforcement agencies such as the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, to track heavy withdrawals.

The PUNCH reports that the CBN had extended the deadline for the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes from January 31 to February 10.

The Department of State Services revealed on Monday that its operatives arrested some currency traders who had turned the sale of newly redesigned notes into brisk business.

The secret police also alleged that the perpetrators were working in cahoots with officials of commercial banks.

Meanwhile, the EFCC further noted that its findings revealed that some of the money traders were working with officials of Money Deposit Banks, vowing to extend its operation to all major commercial centres across the country until all the syndicates involved in the illegal trade are demobilized.

The anti-graft agency also urged financial market operators to ensure compliance with the guidelines set by the CBN.

It added, “The suspects have made useful statements, including a disclosure that they were acting in cohort with some unscrupulous officials of Money Deposit Banks.

“The commission will extend the operation to all the major commercial centres of the country until all the syndicates involved in the illegal trade are demobilised. Financial system operators are also warned to desist from the sharp practices or risk arrest and prosecution.

“Zonal commanders of the EFCC also met with officials of various banks in their commands in an effort to ascertain the volume of the new notes issued to the commercial banks and how the banks were dispensing the monies to their customers.”

“The commanders urged the financial market operators to ensure compliance with the guidelines set by the Central Bank of Nigeria while disclosing that they have dispatched operatives across their commands to monitor the level of compliance by banks and other operators in the financial market.”

Heavy withdrawals

The apex bank has asked commercial banks to stop multiple debit card withdrawals as it stepped up efforts to implement a seamless currency change regime.

The CBN governor, Emefiele, in a meeting with commercial banks on Monday also reportedly directed banks not to pay old notes via ATMs or over the counter.

He equally instructed the EFCC and ICPC officials to inspect bank branches over the next two weeks to ensure full compliance with the guidelines.

The reported directive read in part, “At the CBN Bankers Committee meeting today (Monday), the governor instructed Banks as follows: No Bank is authorised to pay out old notes via ATMs or in bank branches over-the-counter

“No payment of new notes over the counter. Banks are only allowed to release new notes via ATMs. Corporates that require cash should only be given the old N100 notes and below. Corporates must not be given new notes.

“EFCC/ICPC officials will accompany CBN examiners to inspect bank branches over the next two weeks to assess full Compliance with CBN guidelines above.

“Officials of branches that fail to comply or that release cash to corporates and politicians will face termination of their contracts and the respective banks will be sanctioned

“No branch should allow an individual with multiple debit cards to do multiple transactions on ATMs.

“All new notes have tracking numbers to trace them back to state, bank and bank branches. So, notes confiscated at parties and other locations can be traced back to the bank and applicable branch.”

Bank customers in Lagos expressed worries over their inability to get either old naira notes over the counter or at the ATMs.

According to the customers, the ban on over-the-counter transactions of old notes was meant to compound the problems of Nigerians.

While speaking with our correspondent at the banking hall of the United Bank for Africa located by Leventis, Marina, Adewale Adebayo said the banks were out to punish the masses.

He said, “When you are talking about banning counter transactions of the old notes when the majority of the machines were not working, the decision does not make any sense.

“They say it is going to stop the old notes in circulation, but this is not true. These old notes are still everywhere. The PoS people are still giving the old notes. Banning it without the provision on how to get the new ones is too complicated for those of us who need cash for daily survival.’’

Suleiman Rasaki, a cooperative operator, told The PUNCH at the banking hall of the Sterling bank in Marina, Lagos, that the rationale behind banning transactions of the old notes when the ATMs were not dispensing sufficient cash was ill-conceived.

But Emmanuel Anoro believed the decision was the right one considering the depreciation in the value of the naira.

He added that “The changing of new naira notes is okay. It will help to change the contaminated notes and discourage people who are keeping money inside their houses.”

As of the time of filing the report around 2 pm, only a few machines were working in all the ATMs visited in Marina.

Business / Kano, Ondo, Anambra Depositors Flood Banks With Old Notes by Marisa1: 2:36am On Jan 25, 2023
In an attempt to deposit old notes before the January 31 deadline stipulated for the phasing out of the old N1,000, N500 and N200 notes, bank customers have started rushing to banks across the country to exchange their old notes for new ones, according to findings by SUPERS.ng.

This came as the Central Bank of Nigeria insisted on Tuesday that there was no going back on the stipulated deadline despite appeals by the National Assembly, key stakeholders and bank customers.

The CBN had repeatedly advised Nigerians to deposit their old notes, regardless of the amount, in banks before the fixed deadline.

Findings on Tuesday showed there were queues of bank customers in Kano, Ondo, Osun, Borno, and Anambra, among others, seeking to exchange the old notes for the new naira bills ahead of the deadline.

Kano

Customers on Tuesday besieged various commercial banks in the ancient city of Kano to either get the new naira notes or deposit the old notes in order to beat the January 31 CBN deadline.

The customers, who were seen in long queues in most of the banks, lamented the failure of most of the banks to provide the new naira notes.

It was observed that while some ATM machines were operating, many were not functioning as they were deserted.

At Zoo road, Murtala Mohammed Way and Maiduguri road where there is a concentration of banks, very few of the ATM machines were dispensing the new naira notes.

It was gathered that in some banks, old notes were still being issued to customers withdrawing over the counter, as only some lucky customers were getting the new notes.

Some of the customers, who spoke to The PUNCH at First Bank on Zoo road branch, expressed great concern over the non-availability of the new notes and the refusal of the banks to give satisfactory explanations of the situation.

One of the customers, who simply gave his name as Lawan,  said he left his house as early as 7 am in order to withdraw only N20,000 but ended up getting only N10,000 due to poor network.

“The only ATM machine dispensing new notes suddenly became faulty while I was trying to withdraw N20,000. So, I ended up withdrawing N10,000 after spending about three hours in the queue.

“None of the banks can explain the reasons behind all these happenings because to deposit the old notes or withdraw the new notes is a problem,” Lawan said.

Another customer, Adamu Abdullahi, who went to the bank to deposit his old naira notes said he spent more than four hours in the queue before he could deposit the money.

“I came here around 8:30 am but could not deposit the money until after 4 pm due to the long queue of customers,” he said.

As of the time of filing this story, many traders had stopped collecting the old naira notes due to the challenges bedevilling the entire process.

Sokoto

According to him, many people, especially petty traders were becoming increasingly conscious of the date when the old notes would cease to be recognised as legal tender and were trying to beat the deadline.

Ondo

Commercial banks in Ondo State were filled with customers seeking to deposit old bills and withdraw new notes on Tuesday.

It was observed that most of the customers were market traders and farmers. Some of them travelled from their towns and villages, where there are no commercial banks, to Akure and other big towns. Some were said to be PoS operators.

One of the customers who travelled from Oba Akoko in the Akoko South-West Local Government, Mr Sunday Adeoye, lamented the lack of an adequate number of commercial banks in the Akoko area.

Adeoye said, “There are no banks in our area, some customers would travel from Ipesi Akoko, Igashi Akoko and Ikakumo to Ikare for new notes. This is too stressful and expensive, now that transport fare is too high due to fuel price hike and scarcity in Akokoland.”

Another customer, Alhaji Ismaila Musa, a farmer from the Eleyowo community in the Akure North Local Government, stated that the new notes were not yet circulating as expected.

He said, “We are calling on banks to follow the CBN directives and make the new notes available to all of us. We have to come to Akure to deposit the old notes and we have not seen the new notes in our area.”

Borno

Banks in the Maiduguri metropolis have been witnessing a more-than-usual build-up of fairly rowdy crowds as most customers rush to deposit their old naira notes while others struggle to withdraw the new notes.

At the Monday Market branch of Zenith Bank, the queues were so long that customers were only allowed into the banking hall in groups of 10 to 15.

“I tried to deposit N2m of the old notes yesterday, but I could not because of the crowd, coupled with the fact that counting a huge amount of cash seems so tedious for the bank staff, that they can only serve a relatively smaller number of depositors daily,” Mr Ahmed Hassan, who operates a corporate account with the bank, told The PUNCH.

“I have just been able to deposit the cash today (Tuesday) after spending three hours in the banking hall, not even in the queue outside,” he said.

The PUNCH observed that many depositors, who trooped to the banks to deposit the old notes on Monday, could not do so. Many of them complained that they might not be able to do it on Tuesday.

At the Jaiz Bank at Shehu Laminu Way, apart from the crowd of seemingly helpless depositors in the banking hall, the queue at the ATM featured occasional brawls by customers engaged in a struggle to withdraw the new notes.

“I wanted to withdraw N30,000 over-the-counter because the queue by the ATM was too long for me. We were later driven out by the bank workers. The officials told us that we should either accept old notes over-the-counter or endure the ATM queue and crowd to withdraw new notes,” a customer who would not mention his name told The PUNCH.

In five banks monitored by SUPERS.ng, the ATMs dispense new notes, with most of them being the N1,000 note.

However, several customers complained of the shortage of the N500 and the N200 notes.

Anambra

Customers on Tuesday besieged banks across major cities of Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka to change their old naira notes.

Our correspondent who monitored the situation, observed that most ATM machines in Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi, were still dispensing the old notes as bank customers complain heavily.

At the motor parks and market places in Onitsha on Tuesday, a town crier went around announcing to the people that “with effect from Thursday(this week), old notes would no longer be accepted for transaction at the motor parks and marketplaces.

Some few days ago, traders at the Main Market, Onitsha, had complained to the officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria who visited the market for a sensitisation, how bank officials were selling and hoarding the new naira notes in Onitsha.

NASS seeks extension

Meanwhile, the Senate on Tuesday appealed to the CBN to extend the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes from the January 31 deadline to July 31, 2023.

The apex bank had in October last year said the old naira notes would seize to be legal tender from January 31.

The Senate in December passed a resolution urging the CBN to extend the deadline to June 30.

However, the insistence of the CBN on no reversal on the set deadline instigated Senator Sadiq Umar, (APC, Kwara North) to move a motion on the floor of the red chamber on Tuesday,  where he demanded an extension to July 31.

Most senators who contributed to the debate overwhelmingly embraced the extension, citing the scarcity of new notes both in the banks and at the various ATMs across the country as the reason.

The President, Senate, Ahmad Lawan, put the prayers in motion to vote and the lawmakers voted in support of the extension of the deadline from January 31 to July 31.

The House of Representatives also called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over the brewing crisis occasioned by the January 31 deadline issued by the CBN, for Nigerians to exchange their old naira notes with the new ones.

Apart from asking the CBN to extend the window for swapping the old notes with the newly redesigned one by six months, the House invited Deposit Money Banks, also known as commercial banks, to a meeting on Wednesday (today) over the scarcity of new naira notes.

The managing directors/chief executive officers of the banks, under the auspices of the Bankers’ Committee, are to meet with an ad hoc committee of the House to be chaired by the Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa.

The House particularly resolved that the banks should be invited to explain the alleged supply shortage from the Central Bank of Nigeria, after which the lawmakers would invite the leadership of the apex bank for questioning.

The House “call on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the insistence of the CBN on the tight deadline for the implementation of the cashless policy and currency swap.”

The lawmakers also urged the CBN to extend the implementation of the cashless policy “to at least six months as well as review the daily withdrawal limit and the charges therefrom.”

The resolution follows the unanimous adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by a member of the House from Katsina State, Sara Soli, at the opening of the plenary on Tuesday.

Soli noted that the CBN was insisting on the January 31 validity deadline for the new N1,000, N500 and N200 notes despite that Nigerians have limited access to them.

CBN insists

Meanwhile, the CBN has said that there is no going back on the deadline.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said this on Tuesday after the first Monetary Policy Committee meeting of 2023.

Emefiele said, “Unfortunately, I don’t have good news for those who feel that we should shift the deadline. My apologies. The reason is that just like the President has said on more than two occasions and even to people privately, for us, 90 days or 100 days,  we feel is enough for anybody who has money or old currency to deposit it in the banks.

“We took every measure to ensure that all the banks were open or remain open to receive the old currencies. We believe 100 days are more than adequate. We called on the banks to extend banking hours and keep doors open on Saturdays. The banks did not have any reason to even keep their banking halls open on Saturday neither did they see the kind of rush. It was the normal people who came and deposited in the banks.

“We do not see any need to talk about a shift because people could not deposit their old money into their banks. About the circulation of the new currency, we said the currency was available.”

He said the apex bank stopped banks from paying new notes over the counter because they were not paying the vulnerable people that needed the new notes.

He said banks “paid new notes to their friends. We told the banks to fill their ATMs with new notes and not put in old notes again. We increased the volume of disbursement of new notes to the banks and at some points, we told banks to reduce the volume of old notes in their banks at a certain percentage because on the first you should have zero old notes in their vaults.”

He lamented that in 2015, N1.42tn was in circulation but the figures jumped to N3.23tn in 2022.

According to him, N1.7tn out of the N3.23tn is outside bank vaults.

Emefiele said so far, the apex bank has received N1.3tn to N1.5tn from banks since the date of the announcement.

He said, “By last week, we have seen about N1.3tn to N1.5tn in. We are hoping that as we get into this week, we will move closer to N2tn. If we get N2tn in and those who decide to keep it in the vault keep it in their homes, I am not going to force them to bring it out.”

 Appeal to EFCC, ICPC

The CBN governor said he had appealed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission to allow people to deposit their cash.

He said this, discouraging anyone from hoarding cash, which would cease to be legal tender after the deadline.

He said, “People are hoarding it. People are keeping vaults in their homes. We cannot allow them to be banks in their homes. They don’t have the licence to build bank vaults in their homes. They should release that money to the CBN because what they are doing is that they are undermining monetary policy. They are keeping that money to speculate against our currency and it is making our work difficult in CBN.”

The CBN governor added, “By 31 of January, it will be useless in their hands, so I can only just beg them to please bring it. We will take it on or before the 31. Nobody is going to harass you. If you are afraid of being harassed, trust me, we have begged the EFCC. We have begged the ICPC that they should please allow us to do our work so that people can bring more money in. So, we are begging them to bring it in. Nothing will happen to you on my honour.”

He also noted that ransom from kidnapping had reduced due to the new naira policy.

On stamp duty

The CBN governor also broke his silence on the allegation that the apex bank withheld N89trn realised from stamp duty revenues.

The governor on Tuesday expressed surprise that such conversations would come up considering the size of the banking system.

He said that the said amount was far bigger than the total asset of the entire banking industry in the country.

The apex bank boss revealed that N370.89bn had been collected between 2016 and to date.

Emefiele said, “N89tn is so large. The total asset of the banking industry if you understand accounting is about N71tn or N71.5tn. The total deposit of the banking system is N44.49tn. So, how then is it possible that stamp duty is N89tn while the deposit of banks is N44.49tn?

“So, when it became a story everywhere, we went into our records, told Banking Supervision, Banking Payment System to go into the system and rake out the total amount that had been collected on stamp duty from 2016 to date.

“We told our people in Banking Supervision to contact the banks. Let the banks give us from their records; how much they have collected from 2016 to date and tell the banks to sign on their headed paper that this is the amount they have collected on Stamp Duty from 2016 to date.

“The report that we have in CBN is that Stamp Duty collected to date is N370,886,315,505.28. These are public accounts. We owe Nigeria public accountability. Out of that, the Federal Inland Revenue or the Ministry of Finance has disbursed to Federation Accounts Allocation Committee N226,451,720,158.88.

“And the balance with the account of the CBN is N144,234,535,346.40. We did calculations and the highest collection from the oldest bank in Nigeria, First Bank, collected N71.6bn in seven years. I truly don’t know where N89tn is?”

The reaction is in response to a member of the House of Representatives, Mr Muhammed Kazaure, who claimed that Emefiele siphoned the sum of N89tn which had allegedly accrued to the federation.

However, Emefiele said, “The truth is that the CBN will not be joined in any argument with anybody because it will overheat the system. But it is important for me to say that Stamp Duty is the revenue that needs to be collected from people who are conducting electronic transfers. It is about public accounts and accountability.

“I do not want to make any statement that will overheat the system. I don’t understand how the central bank started forcing banks in 2016 to collect stamp duty because we feel it is a source of revenue generation opportunity. How can that same central bank begin to withhold N89tn? It beats our imagination that those kinds of arguments can come.

“We at the central bank have said we will continue to look for it. What have we done? We have engaged the big four audit firms, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, and Deloitte to go to the banks and do a forensic audit of all stamp duty.

“Maybe by the time they simulate the number of transactions, they will see it and if there is any uncollected stamp duty, we will force the banks they pay to the last one penny.”

Singer, Blackface has taken to his social media page to call out fast-rising Nigerian singer, Asake over alleged intellectual theft.

SUPERS.ng could observe that Blackface, in a series of posts on Twitter, accused the “PBUY” star of remixing “his song,” “Joha,” without his permission.

According to Blackface, Asake stole his hit song “Joha” from him without giving him credit.

This comes after ace videographer TG Omori, who directed the video of Asake’s hit song “Joha,” made the startling revelation that he charged $165,000 (over $75 million) for the music video, SUPERS.ng

Taking to his Twitter page, a disgruntled Blackface pointed out that such an amount was used to shoot the video, but no one could call the “owner of the song” to inform him before remixing the song.

“You spend $165k dollars to shoot musical video for your artist Una no fit use 100naira call the owner of the song before una remix am Una dey form say una smart I believe E better make una do the right thing because this one I no go sorry for una ! I dey come !.” He wrote in part.

Meanwhile, SUPERS.ng findings shows an old video of Asake, performing “Joha” during his university days recently surfaced online.

The 27-year-old graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, rose to prominence early in 2022 following the release of his hit track “Omo Ope,” featuring YBNL boss Olamide, and has since become a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian music industry.

The old video that’s currently making the rounds online shows Asake and his team performing “Joha” on the stage of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) years before the song became a hit.

SUPERS.ng gathered that that was the first time he performed the track, “Joha,” and a few years later, after he became a star, he modified the song, which is now a global hit.

Politics / Commotion In Lagos Airport As Aviation Union Strikes , Details by Marisa1: 2:44am On Jan 24, 2023
Commotion as Aviation union strikes , Details

Several international passengers were stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Monday, as many airlines were forced to divert flights due to the strike action embarked on by workers of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc over salary-related issues.

NAHCO in a statement acknowledged that some of its clients were being put through a difficult situation by the insistence of some of its members of staff to embark on a strike action despite a subsisting order of the court allegedly restraining them from doing so.

The Group Executive Director of NAHCO, Dr Olusola Obabori, said the company regretted the inconveniences the industrial action had caused, SUPERS.ng learnt

He said, “We understand the power of negotiation. The company which has arguably the best welfare package among the local players in the aviation industry will do all that is absolutely necessary to make its workforce happy even as it delights its customers. This situation would be resolved speedily as it is detrimental to the staff, the company, and its esteemed clients.”

According to SUPERS.ng observation Delta Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Qatar Airways, and Air France-KLM were some of the airlines the company handles their logistics. It handles check-in, boarding, and ramp services for many international and domestic carriers.

The National Union of Air Transport Employees and the Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria had last week given a five–day notice of strike to NAHCO management, citing slow progress in negotiation for salary review.

The company, which recently promoted about 2,000 members of its workforce, asked that accelerated negotiation be continued in February to enable the company to stabilise from the financial effect of the recent promotions.

NAHCo workers, however, prevailed on the protesting staff to shelve their action.  The strike was suspended after a meeting among NUATE, ATSSSAN and the company’s management.

NAHCo’s management as part of peace measures had to withdraw the suit it filed against the actions of the workers and vacate the earlier obtained court order.

According to a statement issued by NAHCO, negotiations on staff welfare are to commence on Wednesday, January 25th January 2023; all negotiations were to be concluded during the week with a resolution that all staff should resume work immediately.

Airlines such as Qatar Airways and RwandAir which had taken off diverted to Accra and other neighbouring countries while the strike action lasted.

It was learnt that Qatar Airlines had to go back to Doha with the same passengers after it appeared that the situation would take a long time to be resolved.

Virgin Atlantic was in a frantic move as of 8.30 am on Monday to prevail on the workers’ union to rescind their action while looking for an amicable resolution to the issue. Many of Virgin Atlantic’s passengers were students who were returning to schools in the United Kingdom.

Politics / FG Predicts Fresh Flooding, Says 662 Killed 2022 by Marisa1: 2:33am On Jan 24, 2023
On Monday, federal Government, declared that Nigeria would definitely witness another round of flood in many states this year, but stated that early preparations had commenced to avoid some of the mistakes that were made in 2022.

SUPERS.ng Learnt that 662 persons were killed by the devastating flood situation in 2022, adding that state governors would be informed early this year about disaster-prone areas.

The Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency, Mustapha Ahmed, disclosed this in Abuja at the executive seminar for NEMA employees and senior members of staff selected from State Emergency Management Agencies and critical disaster management stakeholders.

Speaking to journalists on the side-lines of the event, he said, “This is January and by tomorrow (Tuesday), NiMet (Nigeria Meteorological Agency) is releasing their seasonal climate prediction and after that I believe that in the next week or two, NIHSA (Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency) will release their own flood outlook.

“And immediately after that we will gather stakeholders to critically analyse the reports and interpret it and attach it with the vulnerable areas mapping, and send it out to states.

“We are starting early because we have seen one or two mistakes that were done last year. So we have to work together and collaborate with all the states. We can’t work if NEMA is moving on one side, while the states are on the other side.”

SUUPERS.ng Asked whether NEMA was interfacing with the Nigeria Governors Forum on how to manage floods in states, Ahmed said replied in the affirmative and stressed that there would be floods this year.

He said, “When we finish with this (seminar), and NiMet releases its climate prediction, and NIHSA releases its own outlook, and we analyse them and then conduct the vulnerable areas mapping, we will then interact with the governors directly, all of them.

“We don’t do that for just once, rather we identify the likely areas of disaster. It is going to flood again this year, there is no doubt about that. It is going to flood. How severe it will be is what we don’t know for now, but it’s actually going to flood again.”

In his address during the event, he said the devastating 2022 flood disaster across the country was unprecedented in the history of Nigeria.

Career / Report Says Tech Sector Sacked 55,970 In 20 Days by Marisa1: 1:36am On Jan 24, 2023
Report Says Tech sector sacked 55,970 in 20 days

The global technology sector has laid off 55,970 workers in the first 20 days of 2023, according to an analysis of datas sourced from layoffs.fyi.

This is an indication that the tech sector is picking up from where it left off last year when it laid off 158,951 workers.

Already, the number of layoffs in the sector in 2023 is 35.21 per cent of the total amount of layoffs in 2022.

During the COVID-19 pandemic SUPERS.ng observed that many tech firms hired a lot of workers as the demand for online services grew because of enforced lockdowns. Since these lockdowns eased, demand for online services has reduced and many tech firms have recorded reduced revenues.

While announcing the firm’s decision to lay off 11,000 workers in 2022, Meta’s CEO said, “At the start of Covid, the world rapidly moved online and the surge of e-commerce led to outsized revenue growth.

“Many people predicted this would be a permanent acceleration that would continue even after the pandemic ended. I did too, so I made the decision to significantly increase our investments. Unfortunately, this did not play out the way I expected.

“Not only has online commerce returned to prior trends, but the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and ads signal loss have caused our revenue to be much lower than I’d expected.”

According to research by Morgan Stanley, aggressive hiring by tech companies resulted in rising payrolls at tech and tech-adjacent companies, SUPERS.ng learnt.

It stated that Africa was not isolated from these layoffs as many of these firms have a large presence in Africa.

Findings by SUPERS.ng say Twitter announced its mass layoff in 2022, a large chunk of its African team was affected. Also, in 2022 local tech firms like Chipper Cash, Kuda, Swvl, Wave, and more headlined layoffs on the continent.

A decrease in start-up funding because of a global economic crisis has been projected to impact the African start-up space and impact workers

In 2022, Meta’s 11,000 layoffs was the largest in the sector. Amazon and Twitter also formed part of the companies that let workers go in 2022.

In 2023, Google is leading the way with 12,000 intended layoffs. Microsoft has also announced plans to sack 10,000 workers in the coming months of 2023, SUPERS.ng observed

In a mail to its workers, Google blamed the present economic situation for the layoffs.

Alphabet Chief Executive Officer, Sundar Pichai, said in an email to employees, “I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles.

“We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices.

“This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with. I’m deeply sorry for that. The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here.

“Over the past two years, we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today.

“I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us, thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI. To fully capture it, we’ll need to make tough choices. So, we’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company.

“The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions.”

Alphabet has a workforce of about 187,000 workers worldwide as of September 2022, and its recent cuts will affect about six per cent of its total workforce.

In an earlier interview with The PUNCH, the Chief Executive Officer, Prunedge, Joel Ogunsola, said, “The value of funding has been lower. Revenue is dwindling and everyone is battling with this, and it is a challenge.”

SUPERS.ng observed that the Founder of Lendsqr and a trustee of Open Banking Nigeria, Adedeji Olowe, stated, “When COVID-19 happened, everyone went remote and everything digital exploded.

“A lot of companies, both big and small, faced a lot of demand. There was an increased demand for their services and a lot of people thought that the increased demand and growth will face an upward trajectory, so people over-hired.

“People also raised funds at a high valuation. Now that the world is normal, things are calmer, and reality is beginning to reset things. It was COVID-19 exuberance that caused people to over-hire. So, now people are shedding excess weight. Tech is still great, that is the truth, but both enthusiasm and economics are coming back to normal. The market will reset, and everyone will move on.”

Religion / Halima Abubakar: I Was Pregnant 3 Times For Apostle Suleman by Marisa1: 1:23am On Jan 23, 2023
Halima Abubakar, has alleged that she was pregnant on three occasions for Apostle Johnson Suleman, the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International

SUPERS.ng recall that Halima had in 2022 called out Suleman on social media while claiming the pair once dated.

She added that the cleric also had sexual affairs with several actresses, including Shan George and Iyabo Ojo.

On Instagram, Halima said that her life was in danger and that the cleric should be held responsible for whatever happened to her.

“Please don’t worry about me. But you can hold Johnson Suleman responsible, just in case. You can’t do anything, though. Nigerians are aware. If anything happens, Johnson, it’s you,” she had posted on Instagram.

However, in a recent interview, the actress claimed the duo dated for six years.

In a now-viral clip of the interview, Halima was asked if she was ever pregnant for Suleman and why she did not keep the pregnancy, she said, “Yes, I was once pregnant for him. When I lost the baby, he was crying, you would think it’s real because he was shedding tears that I lost his child.

“It’s crazy. I got pregnant three times for him. The last one got me bleeding…I had to take tablets to stop it.”

On how long it took the bleeding to stop, she replied “For four years, I actually just came out since I have been in a long spiritual battle; the blood just stopped rushing, you won’t believe it.

“He was sleeping with me even while I was bleeding. That’s the dangerous part of it, and he was telling me he couldn’t sleep with any other person, that’s why.

“The whole thing took me unaware because I was naive and not a spiritual person. Even when I’m on my period, he does that (sleeps with me).”

This is not the first time Apostle Suleman will be involved in sexual scandal.

SUPERS.ng confirmed that, In 2021, Another Nollywood actress, Chioma Ifemeludike, claimed she was in a sexual relationship with the overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide.

The actress and producer, who has been in the Nollywood industry for nine years, had revealed that she had no idea that the man of God was quite prominent at the time she had an intercourse with him.

Chioma on her Instagram page recalled that the first deal of her encounter of romp sex with the man of God was sealed through a hookup by another lady, Linda Clems, noting that at the second time, she clearly recognised him because they exchanged numbers during the first romp and communicated thereafter.

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, she added that her public confession came after her spirit continued to torment her, and she needed to make restitution for her sin.

SUPERS.ng also in February 2021 reported that a former pastor of the Omega Fire Ministries, Mike Davids, accused Suleman, of sleeping with his wife.

He added he was ready to expose the truths behind Stephanie Otobo’s sex scandal.

The case of Otobo, a Canada-based singer, came up in 2017 and 2018 when she accused Suleman of sexual relationship – a controversial scandal that plagued the church and attracted the attention of Nigerians for months.

Actress, Eucharia Anunobi has said that anyone who laments about the state of Nigeria and is yet to get their permanent voter’s card is an antichrist.

Eucharia shared a video on her Instagram page highlighting all the ways one can be an anti, including not getting their PVCs.

According to her, they were anti because the word meant to work against the good things.

She said;

“If your pastor preaches anything that hurts your feelings or offends you but is in line with the word of God, he or she is not out of line which means you an antichrist.

If you are a husband or wife snatcher, you are an antichrist. If you are sleeping with an underaged, you are an antichrist. If you are a landgrabber, you are an antichrist.

If you are sleeping with persons of the same gender or in the same sex marriage, you are an antichrist. If you are a politician and you have no intentions to redeem your promises, you are an antichrist. And if you are a Nigerian and you have been complaining that Nigeria is a mess and you have not gotten your PVC to vote in the coming election, you are an antichrist”

Health / 85% Doctors Planning To Leave Nigeria, Says NARD by Marisa1: 3:10am On Jan 22, 2023
At least 85 per cent of Nigerian doctors are planning to leave the country to seek greener pastures

This is according to the data obtained from the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors.

The report also showed that the preferred countries for immigration intentions are the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The NARD members are of House Officers, Registrars, Senior Registrars, and Medical Officers below the level of Principal Medical Officers.

Speaking with our correspondent, the President of the association, Dr Emeka, said if the government did not take steps to address the ongoing brain drain in the country, the situation will get worse in the health sector.

“When we are saying these things, it looks as if it’s a joke. Mobility of labour is acceptable anywhere and what the government should do is to address the root causes of the immigration of doctors, as long as they don’t address it, when they see better opportunities out there, they will want to go there.

“It’s about the choices people make about themselves when they think that the government is not taking care of them. The government needs to improve on the things we have highlighted to reduce the brain drain,” he said.

He noted that as of October 2022, there were only 10,000 resident doctors in the country.

“Five months after, and we don’t have any reason to suggest that there is a downward scale of doctors migrating, if anything should be, it should be an increment in the immigration because nothing essentially has changed in terms of the working condition, infrastructure, security and all that,” he added.

Going by this figure, it means that 8,500 resident doctors plan to leave the country.

The 2023 macroeconomic outlook report released by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group recently said that aside from the considerable health infrastructural gap, Nigeria has lost many medical professionals to brain drain, leading to personnel inadequacy in the health sector.

The report said, “One of the major factors inhibiting Nigeria’s economic development has been the brain drain and knowledge gap in human capital. Knowledge as a significant driver of economies of scale can be increased by investing in education and providing better health services, which is the nation’s human capital formation.

“An equipped labour force, a stable economic environment, a thriving private sector, and robust social welfare programmes are crucial in attaining Shared Prosperity in Nigeria.”

Business / CBN To Clamp Down On Illegal PoS Operators by Marisa1: 2:52am On Jan 22, 2023
President, Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria, Victor Olojo, has said the Central Bank of Nigeria is set to clampdown on illegal Point of Sales operators in the country.

SUPERS.ng gathered that Victor Olojo said the apex bank was planning to sanitise the industry, considering its role in driving its cashless policy. He explained that agents operating under umbrellas and hawking PoS services would be the most hit.

He said, “Agents must wake up, there are rules. Agents operating under an umbrella, agents hawking PoS services, all these things would soon be curtailed. The CBN is coming with a sledgehammer very soon on agents operating outside its guidelines.

“Some of these agents are not properly registered; the minimum accepted is a kiosk, an identifiable address.”

He noted that there must be confidentiality regarding cash withdrawals and the agents must ensure their clients can carry out transactions in enclosed spaces.

2023 is expected to witness growth in PoS transactions. According to the CBN’s policy limiting withdrawals for individuals and corporates, “Customers should be encouraged to use alternative channels (Internet banking, mobile banking apps, USSD, cards/PoS, eNaira, etc.) to conduct their banking transactions.”

Commenting on this expected growth, Olojo, said, “For now, the industry is still on an upward growth. We are still growing upwardly, there is still room for a lot of growth.

“It is part of the financial inclusion agenda, everything is in line. We need to have as many agents come into the system until we get to a saturation point. We are not there yet.

“Although, more agents are needed in the rural areas than in the city and urban centers. We still expect more upward growth, because fintechs are still coming up too.”

According to him, the industry was far from a saturation point since there was a government policy promoting it and agents were making profits.

“So yes, the cashless policy is a major factor why we have an increase in the number of agents,” he said.

Olojo explained that even though there were initial fears on an upward review in PoS transaction charges, that was highly unlikely.

He said, “As regards charges, the CBN is currently working out a plan for mobile money and agents to have access to funds. This is to those that are credible, those that are properly registered. The five per cent or three per cent that applies to people that are taking more than is required from the banks may not apply to mobile agents.

“So, there would be no need for an increment in charges. However, if that doesn’t come in in time, obviously the cost will be transferred.”

According to the NIBSS, there are 986,252 registered PoS terminals in Nigeria (this is based on the last time it updated this record, July 2021). The total number of deployed PoS terminals as of January 2023 was 955,234. Although according to Olojo, there are over 1.4 million mobile money and banking agents.
