Arsenal have only made one major purchase, which was Gabriel who transferred from Lille in a €26million deal. Willian and Dani Ceballos were also brought in, but the latter is on a season-long loan (with no purchase option), while Willian came in on a free transfer. The Club needs more quality players to improve a clearly average side. The midfield, for instance, is begging for quality. Arteta has sounded out Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar as necessary additions, but Arsenal can’t seem to afford them at the moment. The Club needs to sell before they can make further purchases. The likes of Sokratis, Callum Chambers and Mustafi are up for sale but there is a shortage of buyers. The players attracting attention are those Arteta still has in his plans. The likes of Bellerin, Emi Martinez and Lacazette are attracting a lot of interest from other clubs but the Gunners are reluctant to let them leave. The long-running battle between Messi and Barcelona has finally come to an end, at least for the time being. Now, what is next for both parties? It was almost looking like Barcelona's poster boy, club hero and legend was going to leave the club he spent almost his whole career in an acrimonious manner. The fact that Lionel Messi has decided to avoid getting this battle any messier means the Catalans can call on the Argentine for at least one more season. But what happens after that? First of all, it looked quite absurd that the club was adamant in refusing to sell Messi. The serial La Liga champions were holding out for £700million. This a club whose first team is in need of a major revamp as most of their stars are at the twilight of their career. The likes of Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Arturo Vidal, Ivan Rakitic(sold off to Sevilla) and the aforementioned Messi are at the wrong side of 30. You are free to add newcomer Miralem Pjanic into the mix. They are looking to move on all of these players - except Messi obviously -, but the current state of football means suitors are in short supply, so Barca need to agree for cut-price deals. The gaps left by these players could be filled by young world-beaters like... READ MORE: https://goalbreach.com/now-that-messi-remains-barcelona-have-lost/

Kai Havertz voyage into football started right in his hometown club of Alemmania Mariadorf at the tender age of four. He was enrolled into the Under-6s side by the chairman of the club, who happened to be his grandfather. From there he moved to professional side Alemmania Aachen when he was 10 years old. His stay at Aachen was quite brief as he was snatched by Leverkusen a year later after scoring a hat trick against the bundesliga side. At the age of 17-years, Havertz became the youngest player to make 100 appearances in the Bundesliga, a record previously held by soon-to-be teammate Timo Werner. He also became the youngest ever captain of Bayer Leverkusen. Havertz is very fast for a player standing at 6'2". He benefited from having a low centre of gravity while he was younger and idolises Messi - who has similar attributes... Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of Mikel Arteta for 3.5years. The former Arsenal captain takes over from Unai Emery who was dismissed last month while Freddie Ljungberg working in the interim. The talks and eventual confirmation of his appointment was greeted with divided emotions from Arsenal faithful; some are elated at the appointment being that Arteta worked under Guardiola and is held in high regards by his former boss for his tactical nous. Others believe his lack of managerial experience will bring more doom than glory to Arsenal Football Club. Arteta, though a novice in football management, will be able to deliver success at Arsenal, but to do that he will have to do the following: SOLIDIFY THE DEFENCE The Gunners have been porous in defence for some seasons now; they conceded 51 goals in Arsene Wenger's last season and conceded the same amount in Unai Emery's first. They have let in 27 goals in just the 17 EPL games they have played this season so you could only but imagine what the 'goals against' ratio would look like at the end of the season if nothing is done to stop the rot. Arteta will have to input some form of solidity at the back. He will need to work on improving Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney, Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers while also getting a DM who could screen the defence, something Lucas Torreira is capable of doing if giving the right orientation. INSTIL WINNING MENTALITY It has been a worrying norm to watch Arsenal concede easily, giveaway leads and drop their heads when they concede. These are all symptoms of "Confidence Breakdown" or in plain terms, "Lack Of Winning Mentality", an attribute that shouldn't be synonymous with a big European club - which Arsenal are..., or used to be..., or supposed to be..., somewhere in there - and this will have to be worked upon before the gunners can return to their glory days... Manchester City travelled to Anfield with hopes of closing the gap on Liverpool who were 5 points clear at the top before kick-off. The Cityzens were without some of their key players for Sunday's match but manager Pep Guardiola still had hopes of claiming at least a point from this tie, but it wasn't to be. The visitors came out at Liverpool early on, obviously intending to press their hosts back and get the victory, but a 6th-minute counter-attack which was assisted by a controversial VAR call (which has become a norm in the EPL) killed City's early resolve and what followed was a routine win for the European Champions. Manchester City's defence weren't strong enough to contain Liverpool's dangerous attack and Guardiola should be given some stick for this. Yes, his tactics were ok, to say the least, but his defence was depleted and this is where the former Barcelona boss needs to take the blame. The English champions were without No. 1 Ederson who suffered a muscle injury in the midweek UCL tie against Atalanta, a match the Brazilian had no business taking part in. His replacement Claudio Bravo has failed to make any notable saves in the two matches he has played so far. Even Kyle Walker (who had to take charge of the hand gloves after Bravo was sent off in that match) has made more saves than the Chilean. Another area where the Cityzens are suffering is at the heart of their defence. Aymeric Laporte is out on the sidelines till January at the earliest, this lives Guardiola with only John Stones (who just returned from injury himself), the inept Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho (who is much more productive in midfield) as his only senior centre-back options. The Spanish gaffer refused to replace departed captain Vincent Kompany in the summer and was reluctant to match Leicester's asking price for Maguire before their neighbours closed a deal with the foxes right under their nose. Pep has been adamant that he won't look for defensive reinforcements when the transfer window reopens over the winter, he has sure got to reconsider his stance. City's hopes of winning a third successive league title is beginning to go with the wind. They are 8 points off Liverpool now and they host an in-form Chelsea side right after the international break. They have still got to host Manchester United and Leicester City before Christmas with a visit to the Emirates in the mix. SOURCE: https://zamfootball.com/2019/11/10/guardiola-at-fault-for-city-loss/

Arsenal hosted Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon and were unable to get all 3 points yet again as Raul Jimenez cancelled out Aubamenyang's opener with 14 minutes left to play plus added time. It has been a catastrophic week for the Gunners; they blew away a two-goal advantage at home to Crystal Palace last weekend with captain Granit Xhaka provoking the ire of the home fans by swearing at them, then they threw away the lead... not once!... but three times!, and eventually lost to Liverpool on penalties during their midweek Carabao Cup. But this match had a different feel to it though. Unai Emery brought Mesut Ozil into the starting line-up for only the second time this season and that seemed to motivate the German's colleagues on the pitch. Ozil played at the top of a diamond midfield just behind Aubamenyang and Lacazette in attack and all three relentlessly pressed high up when the opposition defence was in possession. The trio of Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Dani Ceballos were combative in midfield while the home defence looked indestructive for major parts of the tie as they kept out anything the visitors threw at them. The Gunners looked like a top-four side for the first time in a long while, and they were well on course to record just their second clean sheet since August. But in the 76th minute, the inevitable happened. Mexican striker Raul Jimenez rose above Calum Chambers to head in Joao Moutinho's cross and that was it, the players and fans of Arsenal were brought back down to earth and then the chorus of boos - which the players are now accustomed too - greeted the full-time whistle, but this time it was directed at the gaffer, and rightly so too. The coach should be commended for getting his starting line-up spot on, but his substitutions left much to be desired. He brought in Gabriel Martinelli which was a good call, but bringing him on to replace the effective Lacazette wasn't. Also taking off Lucas Torriera - who was one of those denying the visitors from getting a hold of the game up on to that moment - was another inexplicable decision. His replacement, Bukayo Saka didn't make any impact of note in the duration he was on the pitch. Unai Emery will need to start correcting these errors and make good use of the exciting players he has at his disposal. The Spaniard has lost the confidence of the fans, he is in the process of losing that of his players, Next is the board!. SOURCE: https://zamfootball.com/2019/11/02/reason-why-arsenal-lost-to-wolves/

From one underwhelming performance to the next, this describes Arsenal who have become more of an emotional burden to their fans than a source of excitement and entertainment. Unai Emery's side were once again appalling, failing to show any form of character, determination or zeal as they lumbered to a 1 nil defeat to Sheffield United on Monday. The players need to be charged up and play with determination, much like Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp has done a great job at Liverpool, he is not the best in terms of tactics but he has created a team of worldbeaters from nothing. The German coach has assembled a team of players who weren't world-class at the time of purchase and turned them to warriors; Andrew Robertson, Georgino Winaljdum and Xherdan Shaqiri were gotten on the cheap from relegated sides, Joel Matip and Adrian were signed on as free agents while the rest were not purchased at astronomical costs. Trent Alexander-Arnold is an academy graduate with just two seasons of first-team experience. Now, Robertson and Trent-Arnold are arguably the best fullbacks in the world, while Joel Matip has formed a solid partnership with Virgil Van Dijk in the heart of defence. Wijnaldum is an unrelenting engine in midfield and Divock Origi who previously seemed unfit to be called a Liverpool player has now become their match-winner of some sorts after he sealed all three points in three important fixtures last season. Credit much go to Klopp who is a manager that inspires his individual players to put all they have got on the field to deliver success, this is what Emery needs to emulate. With one goal down at Bramall Lane, the Gunners looked clueless, unable to unlock United's defence. One would have expected to see more passes into the box and shots on target but all they did was play passes back to the goalkeeper and inexplicably resort to time-wasting; Guendouzi and David Luiz were guilty of the latter. Emery will have to start giving motivational speeches and demanding that his players give their all on the pitch if not the season could end dismally for the Spaniard, that's if he's still in the dugout by then. It was always expected to be a tight one, never mind their respective records so far this season. Liverpool were in the form of their life, winning 17 out of 17 league games coming into this match but had failed to get all 3points in their last 12 visits to Old Trafford. United had always made life difficult for the Reds at home regardless of their form, and they somehow managed to do it once more. Both teams came into this match missing their star players; Manchester United were without Paul Pogba who is still recovering from an ankle injury while Mohammed Salah sat this one out as he is also nursing an injury . There was good news for both managers though as their respective first-team goalkeepers were unexpectedly passed fit for this encounter; David De Gea got injured during the international break and Alisson Becker just returned to first team training after a month out on the sidelines. United manager, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will be very impressed with the performance of his boys in the first half. The home side played a 5-2-3 formation as Solksjaer planned to aphyxiate Liverpool off any scoring chances, it proved a success as the visitor hardly troubled De Gea in the first 45. The host deservedly took the lead in the 31st minute following some excellent work by Daniel James who showed a superb turn of pace to initiate a counter, flying off the flanks before playing a nice ball in for Rashford to poke home with Liverpool's defence at sixes and sevens. The VAR has been playing a pivotal role since the start of the season and it was on hand once more with some controversial calls; first it was consulted after Rashford's goal following a tackle on Divock Origi by Victor Lindelof that led to the goal which it ruled in favour of the hosts, then before half-time the VAR correctly ruled out what would have been an immediate equaliser from Sadio Mane after the Senegalese handled the ball before slotting past De Gea. Both calls didn't go down well for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who was seen complaining to fourth official Jon Moss on the sidelines. United have been complacent this season, they have only been able to claim all 3 points in just two matches this season. They blew away a half-time lead the last time they were at home in the league, drawing one-all to Arsenal after their defence dozed off to allow Aubamenyang through on goal. It was no different this time around, after keeping out everything the visitors threw at them, the defence froze as Robertson's low cross somehow managed to evade everyone in the crowded 18-yard box and land at the feet of substitute Adam Lallan to sidefoot into the net at the far post. Next for the two sides are midweek European encounters; United are away to Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League on Thursday while Liverpool will be away in Belgium to take up Genk in the Champions League. Manchester United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday looking to a claim a third win in the EPL this season. They have got a good record against the top five teams in the league this season, so Jurgen Klopp's men will have to be at the top of their game if they intend to continue their perfect start in the Premier League. United are unbeaten in their last five home games against Liverpool in the league winning three and drawing the rest including a goalless draw last season. Liverpool have really had it rough when playing away to the 'Top Six' opposition, they are winless in 12 away matches at the 'Top Six'. United striker Marcus Rashford has been poor in front of goal this season with only 3 goals to his name, but the England international has scored 10 goals against the big sides in the league dating back to his debut season. This a third of his total return on goals since then. Liverpool will be looking to their dynamic trio of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to wreak havoc on the United defence. Mohammed Salah, in particular, will be in the spotlight on Sunday, the Egyptian has scored against every Premier League team he has faced more than once, except United. United will be without David De Gea (groin) and Paul Pogba (ankle). Jesse Lingard (hamstring) is still a doubt, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be in the squad after returning from illness along with Anthony Martial(thigh). Liverpool will also be without their No.1 Alisson Becker, though the Brazilian is back in training after returning from a calf injury. Matip has declared himself fit enough to start this weekend's match after missing the last two with a knock. Euro 2020 kicks off in June next year with 24 nations locking horns in a battle for European supremacy. The qualifiers for the quadrennial event is at its closing stages, and some teams already know their fate while some are fighting for a spot. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically, four nations will qualify via play-offs which is based on UEFA nations league performances. These complete 24 teams to participate. Let's take a group by group review of teams that have qualified, those yet to qualify (scenarios that could lead to their qualifications) and those that are totally out of the running. GROUP A Raheem Sterling of England is tackled by Jakub Brabec of Czech Republic during the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier between Czech Republic and England (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images) England need a draw at home to Montenegro to qualify. Also, a win for anyone in the match between Czech Republic and Kosovo qualifies England anyway. Czech Republic will qualify if they win at home to Kosovo. Kosovo will need to win in Czech Republic and at least draw at home to England in order to qualify. GROUP B Ukraine qualified when they won 2 - 1 to Portugal on Monday. Portugal will qualify if they win at home to Lithuania and Luxembourg. Serbia need Portugal to lose one of their remaining two games while they win their final two games to Luxembourg and Ukraine to stand a chance of a place in the playoffs at least. GROUP C Netherlands will qualify if they avoid defeat away at Northern Ireland on November 16. Germany will also if they win at home to Belarus while Northern Ireland lose or draw. A point would be enough for Germany if Northern Ireland loses. Northern Ireland will have to win Netherlands and Germany then hope one their rivals drop points in their other matches. All three can finish on 18 points, this will lead to the implementation of the head-to-head goal difference to determine who tops. GROUP D Ireland will qualify with a win against Denmark as long as Switzerland do not draw one of their two remaining games against Georgia and Gibraltar. If Switzerland draws one and Denmark wins Gibraltar, all three teams will finish level on points and head-to-head. Ireland will have to win by two goals to qualify at Denmark's expense and Switzerland will also be assured of a place in the finals. Denmark will be assured of qualification if they win Gibraltar and at least draw to Ireland. Switzerland will qualify if they claim at least four points against Gibraltar and Georgia. GROUP E Croatia will qualify with at least a draw against Slovakia in their next match. Slovakia will qualify if they win away at Croatia and at home to Azerbaijan. They are still assured of a place if they lose to Croatia and win Azerbaijan as long as Wales draw at home to Hungary. Wales must win both matches against Azerbaijan and Hungary while hoping Slovakia... SOURCE: https://zamfootball.com/2019/10/16/euro-2020-who-has-qualified-and-who-has-not/

The Super Eagles of Nigeria came up against the Samba Boys of Brazil at the National Stadium in Singapore on Sunday Afternoon. This was not a clash of Titans as the distance between the two sides in FIFA ranking will attest to, but it was a match between two dominant sides in their respective continents. It was a tight affair with both teams having a share of the spoils after 90minutes. The most notable event of the match was Brazil's star player, Neymar walking off injured midway through the first half. Here are four other things we noticed in the match between Brazil and Nigeria. Aribo Could Be Mikel's True Heir: After Mikel Obi called time on his international career, Super Eagles gaffer Gernot Rohr brought in Joe Aribo to take his place on the field and handed him the famed No. 10 jersey. If the choice of squad no was to act as inspiration, then it worked. The Rangers of Scotland midfielder has been a revelation for the National Team. He introduced himself to the international scene with a goal against Ukraine on his debut. He followed that up with another in Singapore, shimmying past tackles before sidefooting past Ederson to give the Africans the lead. He controls the midfield in a manner reminiscent of Mikel, too bad he wasn't able to come out with a win at his second time of asking. Nigeria Has Defensive Solidity In Depth: One of the achievements of Stephen Keshi was establising a solid central defensive pairing of Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong popularly known as the 'Oyinbo Wall'. Kenneth Omeruo has since picked up in form and displaced Leon Balogun, partnering Ekong formidably at both the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Nations Cup. He was unavailable for last weekend's clash so Semi Ajayi was brought in place and was outstanding, he and Ekong didn't put a foot wrong and repelled almost everything the Brazilians threw at them. A return from injury Omeruo will give Rohr a welcomed selection headache at the heart of the defence with Chidozie Awaziem another option although he has been filling in at right-back for the time being. Brazil Have Dropped A Notch: Things have not been going well for Brazil recently. Since claiming the Copa America title in the summer, Tite's men have been unable to claim a win. They have played 4, lost 1 and drawn the rest. The Brazilians gave an underpar showing against the Nigerians, they needed the help of a scrappy goal to claim a draw. With the galaxy of stars in the team, they are expected to be performing much better than they currently are. Hopefully Neymar and co. will find a way to turn things around by the next international break in November. Goalkeeping Quagmire Could Be A Thing Of The Past: Since the premature retirement of Vincent Enyeama, Rohr has been unable to get a befitting replacement. He has tried and tested the likes of Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi and Francis Uzoho but each of them have been unable to impress. Uzoho though has been quite impressive in the last two games, he seems to have gained a little confidence and his reflexes seem to have improved. Rohr brought in new boy Maduka Okoye for the injured Uzoho in the second half and the latter gave a good account for himself. He stood tall against the Brazilians - who were looking to regain their pride with a winner - with a performance that belied his inexperience, one could be forgiven to doubt that he plies his trade in the fourth tier of German football. If their form can continue in an upward parabola from here on out, then Gernot Rohr might just have gotten answers to Nigeria's goalkeeping situation. German Legend. Really enjoyed his displays during his heydays at Munich |
Manchester City have definitely lost the EPL already. Liverpool all the way!!! |
Wolves claiming all 3 points at the Etihad. This isn't something you witness often, but, it did occur over the weekend. To make matters worse, Manchester City couldn't even reply with a goal at least. This is a first for Pep Guardiola who has never been beaten at home to the nil since he became a manager in England. A little sympathy for the home team, they were without their talismanic creative midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who already has 8 assists and 2 goals in the 7 matches he has played in the league this season. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Sergio Aguero were starved off creative support from the midfield as Ilkay Gundogan who replaced De Bruyne in the line-up was a bit conservative with his passes. From a different perspective though, a team comprising the likes of David Silva and Bernardo Silva along with the aforementioned quartet should have produced a far more positive result than the scoreline shown on the scoreboard at the end of 90 minutes. At this juncture credit should be given to the visitors. Wolverhampton Wanderers played the role of bully to the bullies last season. They lost only 4 of their 12 matches against the 'Big Six' in the league, winning 4 and drawing the rest. Now they seem intent to pick up from where they stopped. Nuno Espirito Sancto's men were compact in defence, denying Mahrez and Sterling the spaces they needed to operate therefore leaving the wingers clueless and desperate for ideas. (Photo Credit - Getty Images) Also, the coach brilliantly tweaked his tactics in the final minutes when the blues started throwing bodies forward in search of the winning goal. He moved Adama Traore centrally to complement their counter-attacking play and the plan worked perfectly. Raul Jiminez fed Traore on the counter - after some comical defending from Nicolas Otamendi that saw the Mexican easily shimmy the defender - to score the first goal on the 80th minute. The Malian then burnt the City defenders for pace before guiding the ball past Ederson to put Wolves two goals to the good at the death. Next for the English Champions is a visit to Selhurst Park after the international break. A loss in that fixture could dash their hopes of defending the title for a consecutive year. "The best is saved for last", or so the saying goes. This is probably what is going through the minds of Premier League fans who will be waiting for tonight's fixture between Manchester United and Arsenal. Manchester United vs Arsenal used to be an entertaining fixture in the late 90s and the turn of the millennium. It used to a battle between the country's two title favourites. Back then we would savour the tactical battles between Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, the on-field clashes of the likes of Patrick Viera and Roy Keane and the goal-scoring technics of Thierry Henry and Rudd Van Nistelrooy. Those days are long gone, this fixture has now fallen from a 'Battle For Top Spot' to a 'Battle For Top-Four'. But this tie hasn't lost all of its excitement. Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and his Arsenal counterpart Unai Emery have been tasked by their individual employers with returning their clubs to its glory days and a victory for any in this fixture will be a step in right direction while a loss could heap more pressure on them. Solksjaer has got injuries to contend with, his main strikers are out injured with youngster Mason Greenwood expected to lead the line along with summer signing Daniel James who has been in inspiring form so far. The other option is for the Norwegian to select Jesse Lingard in a false nine position. The England midfielder has been a point of constant terror for the Gunners in recent fixtures so it won't be a disastrous approach to take by his manager. Whichever one of them starts upfront will be tasked with converting their chances as this has been a source of concern for the Red Devils, who have scored a meagre 8 goals in the league this season, that's 22 less than Champions Manchester City. Emery on his part doesn't really have much of a problem on the injury front; Alexander Lacazette is out till, after the international break at the earliest, Hector Bellerin isn't yet fully fit to start while Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney could at least make a return to the Arsenal bench tonight. Defence has been the problem for the Gunners. A lack of organisation at the back has seen last season's Europa League finalist unable to keep a clean sheet in all but one of their EPL games this season. Emery will definitely be hoping his lads could be a bit coordinated at the back tonight. A win for United will at least take them to 6th on the table, right above Chelsea. A draw just takes them a step above Burnley to 10th while a loss could see them fall a step down to 12th, below Sheffield United. A victory over their arch-rivals could see Arsenal leapfrog Leceister City in 3rd spot, a draw wouldn't be too much of a disaster as they would end up above their North London neighbours in 5th while a loss could see them fall below Crystal Palace in 9th.
