The Federal Government has been called upon to profile Anambra State as an erosion disaster zone and subsequently declare a state of emergency on the state with respect to the challenge. Governor Willie Obiano renewed the call at the governor's Lodge, Amawbia when he received a high powered delegation from the Federal House of Representatives, Led by the House Chairman on Erosion and Habitat, Chief Obinna Chidoka. The delegation was in the state as part of their tour of SouthEast states to inspect ecological funds office projects and erosion sites in the various states. They had on arrival at the governor's Lodge, gone in for a lengthy close door meeting with the governor. Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Governor Obiano who revealed that their discussion centered on the numerous erosion challenges facing state, pointed out that if nothing is done in the coming years, the State would have lost half its size to the environmental problem. He observed that Anambra which was the second in landmass in the country after a series and Lagos State, is now the smallest because according to him, while Lagos is expanding into the ocean, Anambra is shrinking further due to erosion. The governor who emphasized that the state alone cannot handle the erosion problems, noted that he has met with President Muhammadu Buhari severally on the matter and expressed the hope that the visit will give impetus to the request of his administration for immediate intervention on the erosion challenges of the state. The Leader of the delegation, Chief Obinna Chidoka in his remarks acknowledged that the state is adversely affected by the environmental hazards, causing the people to live in fear of imminent dislocation and massive disenfranchisement due to constant land loss. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/gov-obiano-calls-on-fg-to-declare.html#more

The Federal Government yesterday declared that it had premonitions that the female national team, the Super Falcons, will not win the 2016 Africa Women Nations Cup hence it failed to work out the funds for the team’s bonuses and other allowances. Minister for Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, on Wednesday shocked Nigerians when he said the government had no money to offset the outstanding emoluments owed the ladies, who recently won the African Women Nation’s Cup trophy by defeating their Cameroun in the final. The minister told State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting (FEC) that government was yet to settle the footballers’ dues because of the current economic recession.Dalung reinforced Mohammed’s explanation on the development, adding, “when the girls came back from Cameroun we had launch with them and they were in high spirits. The communication gap in trying to convey the situation to them could have been what led to it. If the situation was explained to these girls, I don’t think the situation would have gotten to this level. We are working round to clock to ensure that what belongs to them legitimately is given to them.” He blamed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the current situation, saying, “This has to do with government process. One thing I always make clear is that the process of request for funds for sporting projects must come earlier to meet the objectives.” He pledged that government would carry out a ‘surgery’ on the sports sector to avert a reoccurrence in the future. “It is unfortunate that we are celebrating victory of the Super Falcons amidst some bitter feelings among the players because of some administrative lapses that were not managed properly. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/12/minister-confesseswe-made-no-provision.html#more

President Buhari Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed rumours that he and APC leadership are at odds with one of the party’s leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, describing such rumours as mischievous. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said the President was highly embarrassed by such “suggestions” and that Buhari was in regular contact with Tinubu before, during and after the Ondo gubernatorial election. He said any suggestions that Buhari and the party machinery were working to destroy Tinubu had no foundation in truth or any credibility, explaining that the President was impressed by Tinubu’s assurance not to work against the party in Ondo and he honoured his words. The Presidential Media Aide also explained that President Buhari regards Tinubu as a priceless political asset to the party whose immeasurable contributions to the development and progress of the ruling party are known to all. Buhari and Tinubu Malam Garba Shehu advised rumour mongers stop spreading the seeds of discord and animosity between the President and Tinubu or the party, adding that the President is proud of the Jagaban and his pivotal role in the party and the movement. President Buhari commended Tinubu’s spirit of comradeship in promptly congratulating Rotimi Akeredolu who was elected Governor. The President also noted that at a time his administration is preoccupied with governance issues, rumours of divisions and alleged scheming within the party are counterproductive to internal unity and cohesion in APC. He appealed to APC members and supporters to ignore rumours that could harm party unity. more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/11/buhariim-in-constant-touch-with-tinubu.html?m=1

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has revealed that the nation’s currency has lost about 85 per cent of its value in the last two years, harping on the need for risks managers in banks to brace up to the risks facing the banking sector. The Director, Banking and Payment System, CBN, Mrs. Tokunbo Martins, stated this at the weekend in a presentation made at a round-table discussion organised by the Risk Managers Association of Nigeria, RIMAN, in Lagos. She said the Nigerian economy, including the banking sector, was facing various kinds of risks as a result of the challenges of high inflation, naira depreciation, oil price crash and decline in manufacturing output. The CBN director then called on risk managers to rise to the task of maintaining robust risk management practice in the banking sector. There is a need to avoid the situation the world experienced during the global financial crisis through the use of regulations and standards. During the global financial crisis, risk managers got significant amount of the blame. “The nation’s Gross Domestic Product has contracted by 2.2 per cent, inflation has gone up to above 18 per cent, the currency has depreciated by about 85 per cent in the past two years, and manufacturing has contracted by three per cent,” she said. The member of the Board of Trustees of RIMAN further stated that, “The oil that we produce, apart from the price, has fallen by about 70 per cent. The volume has also contracted a great deal and banks are exposed to manufacturing, oil and gas, and to the government. why is it so damn hard to find an awesome guy who’s going to treat you right and not bail the first time temptation comes his way? Here are nine reasons. HOOKUP CULTURE HAS TAKEN OVER. Although I would never knock hooking up, it has replaced dating and even relationships. Men don’t want to be with one woman only, if they have an entire buffet at their disposal. PEOPLE HAVE TOO MANY OPTIONS. While it’s good to have options, it can be bad when there are too many options. At any given moment a guy can sit down at a dating app and immediately have endless options of women from which to choose. Because of that, it’s hard for them to give one woman a shot for more than a hot minute. LOTS OF GUYS ARE HOLDING OUT FOR SOMETHING “BETTER.” It’s a sad thought, but in a world with so many options, people can become immersed in the idea that something better might be just around the corner. Because that’s the case, it’s hard to find a man who wants to commit when they’re thinking that the next woman they meet could be perfect ― whatever perfect is. MARRIAGE IS BECOMING OBSOLETE. Once upon a time, people couldn’t wait to get married. Although it was likely due to the fact that they would finally be able to do the deed the reality is that these days people are in no rush to get married, so therefore, they’re in no rush to get into a relationship or settle down. And if a guy’s friends aren’t married, he sure as won’t be the first one to do it. SOME MEN ARE INTIMIDATED BY POWER. In comparison to the past few decades, women are more independent than ever. This success and power, for some reason, can be intimidating for some men who, perhaps, realize that they’ll never be the “man” his female partner is. TECHNOLOGY HAS CREATED DISTANCE. How can anyone possibly find a good man or anyone at all when we live in a world where technology rules and our most intimate relationships are with our iPhones? We can’t. The raw hate, bigotry and antagonism that characterised the United States election bring to mind the open display of hate and bitterness during Nigeria’s 2015 election. The two elections may have come and gone but I am reasonably certain Nigerians and President Muhammadu Buhari have some lessons to learn from the way the U.S. president-elect, Donald Trump has conducted himself so far. The conduct and utterances of the U.S. president-elect show a man who fully understands the huge difference between being a candidate of a political party and being the president-elect chosen to preside over the affairs of a whole country including those who didn’t vote for him. Listening to Trump since he won the election, you’d be left wondering if he was the same man who repeatedly used the term “crook” for his opponent, Hillary Clinton and even vowed to ensure she sees the inside of a penitentiary should he win. The actions and utterances of the president-elect so far have shown a man who truly understands the need for unity and national cohesion after a very bitter and highly divisive election campaign in sharp contrast to what we witnessed from our own President Muhammadu Buhari after he was declared the winner of the 2015 presidential elections. Let’s review some of the actions and utterances of the reality T.V personality, Trump since winning the elections: In his victory speech, the billionaire businessman showered encomiums on Clinton. Hear him: “Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country. And I mean that very seriously.” That was Trump speaking as a man whose duty it is to unite both Clinton’s supporters and his own supporters, too. That was Trump sacrificing his petty emotions and urge for vendetta in the interest of national unity. On those who didn’t support him during the election, let’s hear Trump again: “For those who have chosen not to support me……., I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unite our great country.” Note, the president-elect didn’t say he was going to give more attention to those who supported him. He didn’t say anything about 97% versus 5% either. He simply pleaded with those who opposed his candidacy to please come and join him in making their country great. Now, I believe Buhari has one or two lessons to learn here. You don’t go to a foreign country and start implying you’d punish those who didn’t give you their vote during an election. No one has to vote for you. No one owes you any vote. People have the constitutional right to vote for any candidate in an election. It smacks of a criminal sense of entitlement to feel that everybody in your country must vote for you or risk being treated like second class citizens by your government. This is the mentality of a man who knows next to nothing about the term “government.” As a president, you are both legally and morally obligated to treat all your people equally. Matter of fact, a wise president goes extra mile to win the love of those who didn’t support him at the polls. Even as president, those who didn’t support you don’t have to love you. You’ve got to earn their love and support. It must be stated here that the 97% versus 5% speech by Buhari where he promised to treat Nigerians on the basis of how much vote they gave him remains one of the worst presidential gaffes in human history. According to Spanish publication, Sport, Barcelona are considering the Chelsea man as one of their option ahead of next season. The 25-year-old has emerged as a shock target for Barca after his sterling performance for Chelsea which has helped the London club to the top of the pile in the English Premier League. Sport reports that Barcelona have watched Moses three times in his newly adopted right wing-back role at Chelsea and now believe that he is one of the men who could help them solve their defensive frailties on the right side of defence. The report also claimed that Barca officials have been surprised with how Moses has adapted to his new wing back role with so much “depth.” Moses has made 11 league appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring twice and weighing in with an assist. He also has an 89 per cent tackle success rate, five blocked shots and 10 interceptions since he began playing as a wing-back. The Nigerian winger has a contract with Chelsea until 2019. Meanwhile, the Nigerian international has been told focus on his football with Chelsea. Conte wouldn’t be drawn on whether Chelsea would be ready to offer Moses a new deal to ward off interest, but he was emphatic about his desire for his players to not lose focus during their impressive six-match winning run. “For everything [regarding contracts], there is the right time to speak,” Conte told a press conference at Cobham Training Centre. “About Victor, I repeat, it’s important to be focused on the present. National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has hinted that the Agency will now focus on its core Mandates, in a renewed move to serve the ICT industry and the economy better. NITDA established in May 2001 has been a waltzing story of failures and inadequacies, unable to meet its clear mandate of fostering the development and growth of IT in Nigeria. But Dr. Isa Ibrahim Pantami, director general of the agency said all that is about to change because NITDA was not established as a mere ‘contract’ awarding agency. He stated this at a meeting with heads of parastatsls under NITDA, CEOs, presidents of Associations and other stakeholders in the ICT industry, at eNigeria conference and exhibitions 2016 “We need collaborations to reform NITDA and make it more productive. First, I am reiterating that I am not in NITDA to award contracts. If we must, such contract must take us closet to implementing our core mandates; it has to lift the nation from economic quagmire. I have spent few months into my appointment brainstorming with the staff on how best to serve the industry and nation at last. I am not against awarding contract, but NITDA can’t be reduced to mere administrative agency. We have to play better in our regulatory role,” he said. Dr. Pantami said that the Agency’s remains committed to implementing the National Information Technology Policy, especially to articulating frameworks for the planning, research, development, standardisation, application, coordination, monitoring, evaluation and regulation of Information Technology practices in the country. He, however, craved for improved collaboration with the players, who he described as partners in lifting the fortunes of IT sector in the country. According to him, the present administration accords local content the deserved attention, while working cordially with its foreign partners. The DG said that the scope of the Agency’s mandate is wide enough to positively impact every Nigerian, regretting that NITDA’s regulatory role has been relegated over the years. “NITDA’s regulatory role has been relegated for a long time, but we will address that without delays. Our mandate covers capacity building too. However, we will widen the scope to cover more students especially for those in the rural areas benefit. He said that Nigeria loses approximately $2.8 billion annually from the importation of ICT goods and services, including a whopping $1 billion spent annually on software imports. Muhammadu Buhari promised to embrace democracy as president, but turned out to be the same autocrat who failed the country 30 years ago. It’s been a tough year for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. The mood in Africa’s most populous nation is a far cry from the euphoria that greeted his historic 2015 election — the first time in Nigeria’s history that an opposition candidate unseated an incumbent president in a democratic election. For weeks and even months after the vote, Buhari was a media darling, praised at home and extolled abroad.Since then, the cheers have turned to jeers — even from members of the president’s own party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Meanwhile, his administration cowers under attacks from a disillusioned electorate, members of the opposition, and even Buhari’s wife, Aisha, who said she might not vote for him in 2019, when he is up for re-election. What’s behind the swift unravelling of Buhari’s presidency? His inability to formulate a coherent economic plan as Nigeria tipped into recession and unwillingness to make crucial decisions — as basic as appointing a cabinet — in a timely manner certainly didn’t help. But the main reason Buhari has lost the support of his countrymen is that the last year has revealed the central premise of his candidacy to be false: The man who claimed in the campaign to be a “reformed democrat” has proved to be the same old authoritarian showman who ruled Nigeria in the early 1980s. Buhari’s first attempt to run Nigeria ended after a year and a half in the same manner it started: a coup d’état. Back then, Buhari launched a campaign to root out corruption, dubbed the “war against indiscipline”, which was accompanied by restrictions on free trade and free speech, as well as repression of his political opponents. Soon Nigeria was embroiled in a political and economic crisis that paved the way for his ouster.By 2015, however, many Nigerians were ready to give him a second chance. Growing economic hardship and rampant corruption — and the seeming inability of then-President Goodluck Jonathan to tackle either — convinced them to embrace Buhari again despite his checkered past. To many, he seemed like a competent leader — at least more so than the weak and feckless Jonathan. But there is already a strong element of déjà vu in Buhari’s second stint at the helm. He has again staked his presidency on an anti-corruption crusade and again used it as a vehicle to target political opponents. Now, as before, Buhari’s legitimacy was built on empty showmanship, a hyped-up claim of superior morality and discipline coupled with a healthy dose of disdain for elitism, all quickly overshadowed by an economic crisis that he wasn’t equipped to tackle. Part of the problem this time is that he promised much more than he could ever have hoped to deliver. On the campaign trail, he pledged to create millions of new jobs and make Nigeria’s currency, the naira, “equal to the dollar,” two Donald Trump-worthy whoppers that were about as likely to materialise as a border wall paid for by Mexico. The fact that the media didn’t hammer Buhari’s campaign on the ridiculousness of many of his pledges speaks to the quality of journalism and punditry in the country. In any case, the results have been predictable. Instead of creating jobs, the Nigerian economy has shed half a million of them since Buhari took office, swelling the already bloated ranks of the unemployed to 13.3 per cent. The current dollar exchange rate for the naira is about 455 to 1, compared with 260 to 1 around this time last year. Food prices have reportedly doubled across the country, forcing millions of people to go hungry as a famine looms in the north. Not all of this is Buhari’s doing, of course. He inherited an oil-dependent economy only to watch the price of crude crater. He also inherited an empty treasury, the result of past administrations’ unchecked venality and failure to save when oil prices were high. A former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has said that his successor, Chief Willie Obiano, has no legal right to bar him from visiting the state or airing his opinion about the state. Obi, who spoke at Oraifite during the burial of Chief Emeka Offor’s father, Benneth Offor, described an alleged threat by Obiano to unleash an attack on him if he did not behave himself, as an empty one. A media aide to Obiano, Mr. Oliver Okpala, was reported to have threatened to deal with Obi and a former Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, over their comments on Obiano, which were considered to be unwarranted. The governor’s aide said, “To this end, this is a notice that, henceforth, any further unwarranted attack on the governor will be met with a very tough response. “Let it be noted that we have done our investigations, and we know that those sponsoring these unfounded attacks against the governor include those who have tasted power before, either as governor or secretary to the state government. “We have their records, to the minutest of details, and we will not hesitate to unleash a higher degree of attack on their persons with verifiable proofs in our possession so that the world would know the dirty stuff they are made of.” Obi, in his reaction, said it would be disastrous if Anambra degenerated into a dictatorial society under a democracy. On what he would do should Obiano carry out his threat, Obi said the state should be advancing in civilisation by upholding the tenets of democracy and decency, rather than going back to the Hobbesian era. He said, “Such an order will amount to asking me to go on exile. I have a house in Onitsha and live there. “I served Anambra State for eight years. As the governor, I kept saying I would live in the state for the rest of my life to enable me share the joy and grief of the people. Why would somebody say I should not attend events in the state? “Why would somebody request that I should stop saying what I did as the Governor of Anambra State, when people are still talking about the good deeds of the likes of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief M.I. Okpara? “Most of the things said are not for self-adulation, but to use my experience to demonstrate to our people that we can do certain things we thought are impossible, an example was that I returned schools to the church and provided them with over 30,000 computers, generators and Internet connectivity. “The fact is that under our government, we cleared arrears of pension of over N35bn, paid for all the certificates generated by contractors without borrowing a kobo, but instead left money, including dollars for the state.” Meanwhile, Obi’s kinsmen, under the aegis of Agulu Leaders of Thought on Sunday appealed to Obiano, to stop threatening their son. They reminded Obiano that it was Obi that single-handedly made him a governor. A statement signed by the group’s secretary, Joachim Emegwamuo, and made available to journalists in Awka, read in part, “When the news of the threat to the life of our son, Mr. Peter Obi, started circulating, we ignored it as one of those rumours until Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike made it clear during a radio programme. “We are aware that it was Obi who single-handedly made Obiano governor and we are also aware of several indignities Obi is suffering under the governor, ranging from lack of respect to continued and inexplicable witch-hunt. “Obiano has deliberately allowed his aides to abuse Obi to the point of openly denying the over N75bn bequeathed to him. “Obiano has abandoned the projects started by Obi upon which he was elected, thus portraying Obi as an unreliable leader among the Anambra people. “If anything happens to Mr. Peter Obi or any of his aides, Obiano should be held responsible.” more at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/11/you-cant-bar-me-from-anambra-obi-tells.html#more

Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar yesterday commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government for recording giant strides in the fight against insurgents in the North-east part of the country. He said due to the far-reaching successes scored by the Nigerian troops in the on-going war on terror, some internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been able to return to their homes to try and resume normal lives.Atiku, who made the remarks in a speech he delivered at the 11th Founder’s Day ceremony of the Nigeria-American University (AUN) in Yola, Adamawa state, however urged the government to adopt better measures to make the lives of the returning IDPs better. The former Vice President whose zone, the North-east, has been the theatre of years of violent activities of the Boko Haram sect, said 2016 has witnessed a significant improvement in the security situation in the zone. He said an improvement in the security situation has enabled some IDPs to return to their homes, adding that the efforts of the security forces in making these possible were commendable. He also said it would not be enough for people to simply return to their pre-insurgency lives but that government should try to make their lives better than it was before the outbreak of the insurgency war. “The commitment of the federal government and the state governments in this zone, as well as the support of the governments of our neighbouring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger, have pushed back against the violent insurgency and improved the security of citizens in the area,” he said. According to Atiku, who turned 70 years recently, “however, more still needs to be done to restore normalcy in this area. The insurgency remains. The insurgents still occupy a specific geographical space. They still retain the capacity for occasional deadly attacks. Many citizens in the zone still remain vulnerable and live in fear; and we cannot say that the problem is over until every displaced person is able to return home, to the farm, and resume normal activities. We cannot say it is over until we rebuild the schools, the churches, the hospitals, the markets, and the homes that had been destroyed. And we cannot say it’s over until the survivors of this insurgency receive the help they need, including psychological therapy to deal with the trauma that they have been through.“I visited an IDP camp on Saturday and had the privilege of teaching a math class to some children. But the sight of hundreds of children running around and unable to attend school was very gut wrenching. It still breaks my heart. So we cannot say the insurgency is over until all the displaced children return to their schools. More at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/11/atiku-hails-buhari-on-war-against.html?m=1
