Politics › PTF Probe Report: Obasanjo’s Vindication Of Buhari Wrong by maslong(op): 12:53am On Jan 19, 2015 |
FORMER President, Olusegun Obasanjo has been chided for exonerating the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), of complicity in the massive mismanagement of funds perpetrated while he served as chairman, Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).
Obasanjo's motives was described as a desperate bid to change the course of history in favour of his preferred candidate in the forthcoming presidential election.
Addressing a press conference recently, Mr. Ayo Fadaka and Apostle Jaiyeola Joseph of the Integrity and Justice Initiative (IJI) and the Nation Builders Christian Network (NBCN) respectively, said Obasanjo owes Nigerians an apology for his position on the matter.
Obasanjo, while hosting the presidential campaign team of the APC in his Abeokuta residence on Tuesday was quoted to have said the report of the audit panel on the PTF showed "discrepancies" in figures purportedly used for the procurement of goods and services during the period Buhari was the chairman of the body.
The group said that the position Obasanjo took typifies one that: "defies logic and undermines public good, passed a not guilty verdict on Buhari in a way that makes mockery of the PTF's probe report."
Fadaka added, "Obasanjo's seeming vindication of Buhari has thrown up a number of salient issues that bother on embezzlement and mismanagement of public funds.
"This, coming at a period like this when corruption has become a major campaign issue between the two major political parties in the country, is tantamount to an attempt to throw wool over the face of Nigerian people.
"For the purpose of record and in order to save future generations of Nigerians from a deliberately orchestrated re-writing of history being attempted by some of our leaders, we have decided to put the issues concerning the incorruptibility or otherwise of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in their proper perspective.
"The PTF as you may be aware was the agency created by the late dictator Gen Sanni Abacha in March 1995 when he unilaterally increased pump price of petroleum products from N3. 25k to N11 per liter in October 1994; it had a startup sum of N61 billion, which increased progressively to over N182 billion over a period of four years and Buhari was appointed by the late General Abacha to manage this fund as an intervention fund for critical infrastructure in all geo-political zones of the country.
"However, by May 1999 when Nigeria was restored to democratic rule, the management of the PTF had been dogged by multiple controversies most of which bothered on total lack of accountability in the award of contracts, lopsidedness in the location of projects as well as absence of control mechanism to ensure quality assurance on programmes and projects executed by the PTF.
"This was mainly why the then government of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo inaugurated the seven-man committee headed by Dr. Haroun Adamu to look into the programmes and expenditure of the PTF under Buhari." http://www.theguardianmobile.com/readNewsItem1.php?nid=40266 |

Retired Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, explains why the clergy should not mix religion with politics. He speaks against the backdrop of the statement by the Enugu-based Catholic priest and founder of Adoration Ground, Father Ejike Mbaka, that members of his congregation should reject President Goodluck Jonathan in the general elections. How do you see the statement credited to Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka? Any serious priest will not speak the way he spoke. I am not saying that he is not serious. I will not agree with the things he said. According to what I read in the newspapers, a few weeks earlier, the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, visited his Adoration Ground in Enugu and he prayed for her. At that occasion, he was said to have lambasted the opposition party, APC, and now to turn around overnight and start lambasting President Goodluck Jonathan shows that there is something wrong somewhere. Personally, I felt bad because it is not the place of a priest to go to that extent. He can have his personal opinion, but to go to the extent that he went is abnormal. I want you to know that he wasn’t speaking for the church. He said he was moved by the spirit, and I wonder what kind of spirit was that. He said he was under the inspiration of the spirit. If he was under the inspiration of the spirit, I wonder if the spirit is that of God. I don’t think the spirit he’s referring to is the spirit of God. He must have been under the influence of another spirit. He must have been listening to a wrong spirit. Is the statement not embarrassing to the Catholic Church as a whole? Indeed, it is. But I must say to you that he was not speaking on behalf of the church. No! No!! No!!! Anybody with such opinion is in error. The man cannot hold brief for the church. Pardon me, but how can I say you are bloody fool and anybody takes that to mean that all journalists are bloody fools. It’s very funny. In a situation such as this, what does the Catholic Church do? Well, the Catholic Church is structured in such a way that there are dioceses where each priest belongs. This particular priest happens to come from Enugu Diocese, so it is left for the bishop in charge of that diocese to discipline him. If the priest fails to obey the discipline, then the bishop is obligated to report the mother to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN. donphilopus: What's the OP insinuating?! Stop attacking Northerners unnecessarily. Most Politicians collected the PVC's on behalf of some people who are not at home. The Southern Politicians in collaboration with the district heads are also guilty of that.
You shouldn't expect people to just watch INEC return 150 out of the total 250 PVC's of a Polling Unit. Most of the Electorates were based at home in 2011, but later travelled out! I am not insinuating anything negative. The act states that it must be by the person. why collecting it on behalf of the person . You can't try this in the south. SMH. |

Shambling and shambolic! Those are the words that best describe what has become of the distribution and collection of the Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, which represents a very significant aspect of Nigeria’s electoral process. Indeed, these are not the best of times for Professor Attahiru Jega, National Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. With just some 41 days to the most crucial in a series of elections, that is the presidential election, fresh facts emerging suggest that millions of Nigerians may be barred from participating in the process. This is so because the sine qua non for voting, which is the PVC, is not in the hands of many Nigerians – without it, they cannot participate in the voting exercise for the different categories of election. By the same token, a number of Nigerians have arrogated to themselves the role of loco parentis. What this means, strangely, is that whereas the Electoral Act and the guidelines provide that individuals are to collect their PVCs in person, duly signed for after due identification as the bonafide owners of the PVCs, some District Heads in some states of the North are being allowed to collect and warehouse PVCs on behalf of their wards in the district. read more at http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/41-days-presidential-poll-millions-south-may-not-vote/why shifting the goal post in favour of the north alone this is real cheating, how can district heads be allowed to collect and warehouse PVC on behalf of their wards this is nothing but born to rule thing. rig Jonathan out and face hell. |

nickxtra: Please, I need some one with an informed counsel or suggestion to help me out: I live in Abuja, in a one Bedroom Flat, while another tenant occupies the other twin Flat - a one Bedroom Flat. Although we enjoy relatively good power supply - may be 15 hours or more in a day, when our transformer is working optimally, but the bills that come at the end of the month, to my mind is uncalled for. Because we are yet to get a meter, which delay is caused by the power company, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Co, brings an estimated bills of between 10,000 to 11,000 Naira every month, which sees me paying about 5,000 Naira electricity bill per month. This I think is outrageous, considering the fact that what we use is a single phase connection and we are not in a commercial or densely populated area( I live in Dutse, Abuja). We have applied for a prepared meter, but for close to one year now, AEDC, has not deemed it expedient to install any for us, inspite of repeated demands we have made to them. It seems they enjoy bringing these estimated bills to us, just for their own selfish reason. I believe, if the two flats had prepaid meter, we cannot exhaust power units of even 5,000 Naira per month. Please, what do I do, because am tired paying these bloated bills? Thank you. these people na thief dem bi. just look other nabos to join you people so that when the bill comes you will split the money among your selves. |
