The Senate on Wednesday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to direct the Armed Forces and other security agencies to recruit more men as insurgency had overstretched the services. The Senate also wants government at all levels to re-establish government institutions, including schools, health centres, police stations, immigration offices and other institutions shut in Baga, Borno. The decision followed the adoption of the recommendations of the Senate Joint Committee on Defence and Army, Police Affairs and National Security and Intelligence whose members visited Baga after the April mayhem in the town. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the appointment of President Goodluck Jonathan as leader of a reconciliation committee that will meet with aggrieved party members across the country and resolve all pending disputes within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom had told journalists at the end of the party’s National Caucus meeting in Abuja on June 18 that Mr. Jonathan would lead a panel charged with resolving the multiple crises in the party. The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State Chapter, has dismissed claims of free medical services by the state. The association, speaking through its chairman, Olusoji Jagun, declared that the government was yet to provide qualitative health care delivery system to the people of the state, and had been “paying lip service” to the funding of healthcare in the state. “The situation in Ogun health sector is appalling. There are poor infrastructural development all over hospitals in the state. There are no CT scan in Ogun state government hospitals. Ultrasound scan is an essential commodity neither can we boast of a 4 D scan ,DIgital X-ray, fluoroscopy in any government hospital in Ogun,” Mr. Jagun said. Despite having more than N1.3 trillion-about a fourth of the 2013 budget- of government funds locked down by oil and gas firms, the Nigerian government has consistently discarded regulatory reports urging it to sanitize the industry and recover owed funds; and has brushed aside multiple indictments against institutions related to the industry. But when the agency that has struggled for years to prod the government to act-the Nigerian Extractive Industry and Transparency Initiative, NEITI-received a prized global award recognizing its effort three weeks ago, the same administration that has barely acted, scrambled a top delegation of officials to Australia to receive the award, leaving analysts of the sector fuming. Let me say from the outset that it would be scandalous and a grave mistake for the opposition – and by this, I refer to the All Progressives Congress (APC) – to look toward any of the gladiators in the current war of attrition in the People’s Democratic Party, Aminu Tambuwal, Babangida Aliyu, Sule Lamido, etc., as a candidate for the presidency in 2015. With all due respect to these men, and not minding the fact that there are PDP elements in the APC, it would not only smack of unseriousness, but would leave voters no choice in 2015. Having exorcised the incubus of a PDP takeover of the opposition, let’s pose the fundamental question: who will defeat President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015? We need to pose this question frontally and be sincere in our answers. That is the only way the opposition can assess its strength and chances as we head into the battle of 2015. Some northern leaders have accused President Goodluck Jonathan of trying to divide their ranks using a ‘divide and rule’ tactics. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Jeremiah Useni, said this at the opening of the organisation’s Annual General Meeting in Kaduna. Mr. Useni accused the Federal Government of adopting a divide-and-rule tactics to polarise the North ahead of the 2015 election. “I am very sad that the presidency have started divide and rule on the north. Recently we noticed with dismay that some members of this organisation have gone to the president and assured him that he must contest for election in 2015. President Goodluck Jonathan, on Thursday gave a tacit backing to the emergence of a two-party system in Nigeria, saying it would engender political stability. He, however, berated critics of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying despite the criticisms, the ruling party has helped to stabilize the polity since the return of democracy in 1999. He said PDP has become a force to reckon with, insisting this has pushed the opposition parties to think of coming together to fight the ruling party. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Wednesday said the killings of scores of people in Borno and Yobe in the past few days are signs that the Boko Haram terrorists are losing the battle against government forces. The military said the trend of sneaking in to carry out isolated attacks on soft targets as a way of seeking attention is a typical end-game strategy often employed by insurgents all over the world. Seven secondary school students and two teachers were killed in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital when gunmen, believed to be Boko Haram, attacked a government school on Sunday. A day later, suspected Boko Haram gunmen attacked two different locations, a school and a fishing village, in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, killing nine students and 13 fishermen. Less than a week after the All Progressives Congress (APC), submitted its documents with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart in Oyo state, Lekan Balogun, has predicted its collapse. Mr. Balogun, a former senator, dismissed the coming together of opposition parties to form the APC as a “mere marriage of convenience”. Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES in Ibadan at the weekend, the Ibadan chief premised his argument on the inability of the APC leaders to submit the names of their national executive with the application as required by the Electoral Act. The Action Congress of Nigeria’s spokesperson, Lai Mohammed, said on Friday that his party’s proposed merger with three other parties into All Progressive Congress, APC, was already assured of 12 more governors in addition to the known 11. The extra 12 governors, which will bring the number of governors on the new platform to 23, will emerge after the registration of the party- expected to be completed in weeks, Mr. Mohammed said. With only two other opposition party governors not yet in APC- Olusegun Mimiko and Peter Obi of Ondo and Anambra States respectively- the bulk of Mr. Mohammed’s proposed number would therefore appear to be currently in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. On Monday, June 10, at the third round of the 2013 ministerial platform in Abuja, Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, spoke glowingly about the Nigerian economy, saying the fundamentals were strong and that the economy was buoyant beyond danger. But a few hours later, on Tuesday, when all the doors were closed, the minister sang a different tune. She told her colleagues in government point blank that the Nigerian economy is shaky despite the official fundamentals and that drastic steps are needed to save it from collapse. The Nigerian presidency has distanced itself from the highly criticised anti-corruption record the Goodluck Jonathan administration has been faulted for, heaping the blame instead upon the judiciary which it said has failed to speed up efforts of bringing offenders to justice. Presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, said President Goodluck Jonathan has worked hard to improve, or at worst, sustain the tempo he met on corruption, but those efforts were constantly suppressed by Nigeria’s lethargic judiciary. “If you feel that the process of bringing persons to justice is slow in your estimation, don’t forget the fact that the process of conviction and of bringing people to justice after government has initiated it, is that of the judiciary,” Mr. Abati said in an interview with the Nigeria Pilot first published Monday. “The onus is on the judiciary to make sure that those cases are expeditiously treated. But what we get to hear is that the wheel of justice in Nigeria still grinds slowly.” Read more here: http://premiumtimesng.com/news/138621-jonathan-blames-judiciary-for-slow-corruption-war.html |
The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has rejected any attempt by the presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to portray the opposition party or its leadership as terrorism sponsors, saying all alleged sponsors of terror in Nigeria are either within the ruling party or somehow associated with it. In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the ACN said the presidency and the PDP should tell Nigerians the names of all those mentioned as sponsors of Boko Haram in a well-researched article in the journal of the New York-based World Policy Institute, entitled: ”Anatomy of African Terrorism: Boko Haram, Nigeria’s homegrown terror network.” It said that a quick perusal of the article shows a former Nigerian Ambassador to Sao Tome and Principe and a serving Nigerian State Governor, all members of the PDP, as alleged terror sponsors. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday said that anti-insurgency operations and general insecurity had uprooted over 6,000 people in north-eastern Nigeria. This is contained in a report presented in New York by the UNHCR spokesperson, Adrian Edwards. According to the agency’s report, more than 6,000 of those affected have fled to neighbouring Niger republic for safety. “Those that have spoken to UNCHR say they fled for fear of being caught in the government-led crackdown on insurgents linked to the Boko Haram sect, particularly in the Baga area of northern Nigeria, close to the Niger border,’’ Mr. Edwards said in the report. The Action Congress of Nigeria has warned that the recent proscription of Boko Haram and other extremist groups by the federal government may be abused by the “increasingly intolerant” administration to haunt the media and critics. The party said in a statement Sunday it was concerned about some vague provisions of the proscription order being misinterpreted by the government to clampdown on the media and the opposition parties. The contentious section of the Order is Section 5 (1), which prescribes a term of imprisonment of not less than 20 years ”for any person who knowingly, in any manner, directly or indirectly, solicits or renders support for the commission of an act of terrorism or to a terrorist group”.
