Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe says South Africa should have sent troops instead of a team of negotiators to prevent his ouster by the military last year.



Mugabe said his regional neighbours betrayed him “in a sense”, in an interview with the privately-owned Zimbabwe Independent newspaper and other regional and international media.



“When you look at their conditions, except for South Africa, they haven’t got the capacity to intervene. But South Africa could have done much more. It did not send an army, but just to engage” the 94-year-old is quoted as saying.



Mugabe who ruled Zimbabwe since independence from British colonial rule in 1980 was forced to quit when the military stepped in and ruling ZANU-PF lawmakers launched impeachment proceedings against their once beloved leader. He was replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa, a favourite of the military, whom Mugabe had fired weeks earlier as his deputy in a move seen as paving way for his wife Grace to take over.

South Africa’s then-president Jacob Zuma had sent defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the then state security minister Bongani Bongo to intervene in the impasse between Mugabe and the military.

Mugabe, who once quipped that he would rule until he turned 100, described his departure from office as a “coup d’etat. Those who created it have the responsibility to reverse it. If they don’t want to reverse it, it means they want the situation to continue which I think is the case. “They would want us perhaps to get to the national election when the environment is still very congested with fear, some people still hiding, displaced” he said in the interview.

Since his dramatic reversal of fortune, Mugabe has largely stayed out of public life.

Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, a former Deputy Governor of the CBN, has called for the scrapping of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Moghalu spoke while delivering a lecture titled “Overcoming Poverty: The Secret of the Wealth of Nations” on Wednesday in Lagos at the 3rd Annual Lecture of the Centre for Financial Journalism (CFJ).

According to him, the scrapping of the NNPC will bring sanity to the petroleum sector. The financial expert said that the NNPC would be more effective if it was run as a Public Private Partnership (PPP). He also said that deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector was the way to go to stop the incessant fuel scarcity in the country.

He also said that for the country to overcome poverty, it needed to have a worldview, an economic philosophy and be innovative, be economically competitive and should be ready to build sound institutions. Moghalu urged the FG to avoid further borrowing to prevent the mortgaging of the future of the nation’s youths. Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Sen. Olabiyi Durojaiye, Chairman, Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) , noted that the title of the lecture was a reminder of Adam Smith’s book written in the 18th centuries.

Durojaiye commended the present administration in building on the successes recorded by his predecessors in the agricultural sector in turning around the fortune of the economy. He called on the smugglers of rice to stop their unpatriotic trade by allowing the efforts of government to attain fruition. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event attracted the high and mighty in the media industry.

A US-based evangelical radio host, Linda Harvey, has claimed that God makes children gay as a “punishment” for all the abortions committed in the world.

Harvey, who is known for preaching against same sex relationships and telling religious parents to reject their gay children and try and cure them, made the assumption on abortion and gay children when she spoke at the Bringing America Back to Life Convention recently.

In her speech, Harvey suggest the LGBT community was created by God as a “punishment” for all the abortions.

Facebook’s chief security officer "to leave in row over handling of Russian disinformation campaign"


The Chief Security Officer of Facebook plans to leave the tech company amid disagreements over how the company handles misinformation.

Alex Stamos’ impending departure was reported by the New York Times. This would add to a tumultuous year for Facebook as it grapples with revelations that Russian-linked actors sought to influence the 2016 presidential election with paid advertising and divisive posts


According to the Times, Mr Stamos was said to be planning to leave in part because of discord over how Facebook should respond to Russian activity. However, in a tweet, Stamos said he remains "fully engaged" with his work at Facebook.

He tweeted: "It's true that my role did change. I'm currently spending more time exploring emerging security risks and working on election security."

In a series of tweets over the weekend, Mr Stamos pledged his commitment to "stopping authoritarians who use the internet as a weapon" while pushing back against criticism of how Facebook handled Russian incursions.

Meanwhile, a Facebook spokesperson did not directly respond to a question about Mr Stamos' future plans. The spokesperson said Stamos "continues to be the Chief Security Officer."

Guests who attended the wedding of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's daughter, Oludamilola to Seun Bakare, son of billionaire businesswoman, Bola Shagaya, were barred from taking their phones into the venue of the church service.



According to reports, as the guest arrived the National Ecumenical center, they were ordered by the security details to leave their phones in their cars. The water tight security at the venue ensured that the guests complied as directed.



Also journalists were barred from photographing or filming the church. A message sent out from the VP's media team to State House reporters read;

30-year-old Emily Javier suspected her boyfriend Alex Lovell was cheating on her so she bought a Samurai sword and tried to kill him at night.

Luckily, Lovell was able to defend himself after she had hacked him a few times, and he called for help.

With her boyfriend finally asleep, Emily Javier reached for the samurai sword she had secretly taped earlier to the side of the bed.

According to an affidavit filed by police, the room was dark, and she sparked her phone to see better. To aim better.

Below snoozed Alex Lovell. He played too many videos games, Javier would later explain to the police, and now he was cheating on her, she claimed. She knew the signs. Tinder on his phone. Scratches across his back. A girl’s hair in their shower drain. In the weak phone glow, Javier allegedly started hacking.

Lovell woke to his girlfriend of two years attacking him with a sword, police say. Survival instincts — mainly martial arts training and all the kung fu films he had watched — clicked in.

“I was able to wing chun my way to survival,” he told the Oregonian/OregonLive in an interview this week over Facebook messenger, referring to a Chinese martial art. He eventually wrapped Javier in a bear hug. “I saw the look in her eyes, and it scared the living poop out of me,” he told the news outlet. “I told her I loved her, and she was killing me. She needed to call police, or I was going to die.”

Javier broke off the attack and made the call, frantically telling a 911 operator she had stabbed her boyfriend and she thought he was dead. “You used a sword?” the operator asked.

When police did arrive at the scene on March 3, they found Lovell curled up in the blood-spattered bedroom, according to the probable cause affidavit filed by police in Camas, a Washington state town northeast of Portland, Ore. Remarkably, he survived the attack despite serious injuries. Lovell almost lost the index, middle and ring fingers on his hand. But in interviews this week, the competitive gamer sounded happy to be alive.

“I was just so proud for beating this samurai wannabe crazy lady with hate in her heart,” the 29-year-old told the Oregonian/OregonLive. “I’ve been preparing my whole life for something like this.”

Javier — who pleaded not guilty this week to first-degree attempted murder, according to the Columbian — had also allegedly been preparing.

Alex Lovell — known as “Biggie” in his local gamer scene — is an avid player of “PlayerUnknown’s Battleground,” a multiplayer online fighting game. As he told the Oregonian/OregonLive, Lovell has been recently logging 12 to 13 hours a day playing the game. The regimen also required “exercises for his hands, wrists and shoulders and also practicing mouse moves and techniques to maximize performance,” the paper reported.

“I wasn’t a sweaty nerd, more of an Ethlete,” Lovell told the Oregonian/OregonLive.

In an interview with police after the attack, Javier, 30, admitted she was frustrated with her boyfriend for staying glued to his game. Then, a week before the violent incident, Javier said she had discovered Lovell was unfaithful. According to the affidavit, she told police she discovered Tinder, the dating app, on his phone. She also noticed scratches on his back, possibly from a romantic encounter. She found red hair in the shower drain — her own hair was dyed green.

She did not confront her boyfriend. In the past, he had just denied such accusations. This time Javier went to the mall and bought a samurai sword. “I thought, I was gonna stab him while he was sleeping,” she told police.

The relationship reached a crisis point on March 2. According to the police affidavit, Lovell came home but ignored his girlfriend. She allegedly decided to go through with the attack, taping the sword and two knives to the bed. Javier also told police she hid Lovell’s phone so he could not call for help. When Lovell finally went to sleep, she reached for the sword.

In an interview with the Columbian this week, Lovell denied he was unfaithful. “I barely had time to hang out with my girlfriend, let alone another girl,” he told the paper. “I didn’t see it coming, but it makes sense that it happened. She obviously didn’t want anyone else to have me, so — samurai sword.”

Doctors were able to reattach Lovell’s fingers where they were nearly hacked off at the base. He also suffered wounds to his feet, legs, torso, neck and head. His right arm is in a cast. Members of the local gaming scene set up a GoFundMe page for his medical bills. The fund is just $2,000 shy of its $10,000 goal after 10 days.

Javier remains in custody. Her attorney did not return an email for comment.

“The feeling I had when I won the fight with my bare hands is just absolutely the best feeling,” Lovell boasted this week from the hospital. “I’ve played all the sports, won big games, landed some decent tricks on my snowboard. This was better.”

The suspected lunatic, Lekan Adebisi, who hacked two pupils of the St. John’s Anglican Primary School, Agodo, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, Ogun State, to death, has blamed his action on ‘frustration.’

Recall that Lekan had stormed the school during break time wielding a cutlass and attacked the pupils.

Parading the suspect yesterday March 15th, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who condemned the heinous crime, said Adebisi would be charged to court soon.

Speaking to newsmen, Lekan who was incoherent in his speech, blamed his action on frustration.

Ten people have been killed after a newly installed pedestrian bridge collapsed at Florida International University in Tamiami Trail, Maimi on Thursday.

Mail Online reports that the 174-foot 'instant bridge' which was built to provide pedestrian access from FIU’s main campus to an area that houses a number of student residences, was installed Saturday morning but was not due to open to the public until 2019.

Two workers were replacing something on the side of the $14million bridge when it collapsed, according to CBS Miami.

Senator Bill Nelson of Florida, confirmed the incident, saying that between six to 10 people died.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez also told local TV station CBS Miami that least six other injured people were taken away from the scene and eight vehicles were trapped in the bridge wreckage.

He added that one person was suffering from cardiac arrest.

FIU released a statement on Thursday, saying: 'We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge'

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists, yesterday, blocked a bus plying Igboho-Igbeti Road and reportedly abducted eight passengers from the bus. According to Vanguard, armed men were said to have emerged from the bush at Old Oyo National Park, blocked the bus, ordered the passengers to alight and board another vehicle they parked by the roadside.

Before forcing the victims into the waiting bus, the suspected terrorists held their victims hostage for some minutes before they drove away with them. The source said the occupants of the bus were Igboho and Ogbooro indigenes.

Cnfirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Oyo State police command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, the number of persons kidnapped is yet unknown. He said the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, had deployed his men to the area to search for the kidnapped victims.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard: “People in the area are now living in fear as there has been an influx of strange people.”

The comptroller general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede, has said that a lot of fake marriages are taking place between Nigerians and foreigners in the country.



According to Babandede, male foreigners are the ones that are mostly involved in the sham marriages. They come into Nigeria just to get married to a Nigerian woman so they can easily get a residence permit.

The Immigration boss disclosed this when he spoke at the Zonal Coordinators and State Comptrollers of the agency's meeting held at its national headquarters in Abuja yesterday March 14th.

We have observed that foreigners, especially men, are trying to beat the system of issuance of residence permits. A lot of fake or `arrangee’ marriages are going on, and that would give them permission to stay in this country without much liabilities. The advantage is that when you are the spouse of a Nigerian, you have no limitation on the job you will do; you don’t have to pay residence permit fees; it is easier for you to stay. So, we are beginning to face difficulties because many people are becoming married on temporary ground'’ Babandede said.

We will not allow any person to come for holiday marriage, because we have also observed that people just come on holidays, arrange marriages in Nigeria and go back. Renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking, whose mental genius and physical disability made him a household name and inspiration across the globe, has died at the age of 76.



Hawking, whose 1988 book “A Brief History of Time” became an unlikely worldwide bestseller and cemented his superstar status, dedicated his life to unlocking the secrets of the Universe. His genius and wit won over fans from far beyond the rarified world of astrophysics.



He died peacefully at his home in the British university city of Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday morning. “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years", professor Hawking’s children, Lucy, Robert, and Tim said in a statement carried by Britain’s Press Association news agency.



Hawking defied predictions he would only live for a few years after developing a form of motor neurone disease in 1964 at the age of 22. The illness gradually robbed him of mobility, leaving him confined to a wheelchair, almost completely paralysed and unable to speak except through his trademark voice synthesiser.



“His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever” the family said.



Born on January 8, 1942, Stephen William Hawking became one of the world’s most well-regarded scientists, earning comparisons with Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton. His work focused on bringing together relativity — the nature of space and time — and quantum theory — how the smallest particles in the Universe behave — to explain the creation of the Universe and how it is governed.



In 1974, he became one of the youngest fellows of Britain’s most prestigious scientific body, the Royal Society, at the age of 32. In 1979 he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, where he had moved from Oxford University to study theoretical astronomy and cosmology.



Newton was a previous holder of that prestigious post. Inside the shell of his increasingly useless body was a razor-sharp mind, fascinated by the nature of the Universe, how it was formed and how it might end. “My goal is simple,” he once said. “It is complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.”

Tobi accused Cee-C of grabbing his penis but she repeatedly denied the accusation, leading to an argument that attracted other housemates in the Big Brother House.

But at the end of the night, the dramatic pair slept together in one bed and they were a lot of touching going on under the duvet.
