By – Chioma Onuegbu Uyo – THE Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Uyo Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev Asukwo Antai, has called on the Nigerian government to enact a law banning public office holders from sending their children/ wards to study in tertiary institutions abroad as means of averting incessant strikes in Nigeria tertiary institutions. Biafra anniversary parade celebration along Opi-Nsukka Road, Enugu State, yesterday. Photo:: Kelechukwu Iruoma. He also congratulated the Indigenous People of Biafra agitators for making bold to wake up the national conscience. Bishop Antai who decried the incessant strike actions in the country explained that lack of commitment of the Nigerian government towards addressing the lingering issues was connected with the fact that most of them have their children studying abroad. Antai who made the call in the Bishop’s Episcopal charge at the third Session of the Seventh Synod of Uyo Diocese with the theme, “The Image of God”, stressed that such law would help to sustain the interest of Nigerian leaders in the education sector His words, “The incessant shut down of our tertiary institutions due to non-payment of emoluments among other demands is a call on the government to enact a law/policy that will prohibit public office holders from sending their children/wards to study abroad. “That will help them to work towards upgrading and stabilizing the education system. There should be a change of hearts by Nigeria’s leaders to the issue of educational development in the country”. He congratulated the Indigenous People of Biafra agitators for making bold to wake up the national conscience to the unfortunate federal style of government the military juntas foisted upon Nigeria. According to him, “the Biafran agitation should be seen as a call to action on the government and people of Nigeria to take another critical look at the type of federation that the country is currently practicing”. The Bishop who disagreed with the call for the Independent Biafra Republic, however, called on every well meaning citizen of Nigeria not to relent on the demand for the restructuring of the country aimed at devolving power to either constituent geo-political zones or states. He condemned the quit notice issued to the Igbo living in the North, describing any attack on the Igbo as an attack on all southern Nigerians even as he said those behind the threat ought to be arrested and prosecuted. He thanked God for the life of the president and called on all Nigerians to continue to pray for his total recovery. The cleric condemned the calls for the disclosure of the Presidents ailment, describing such calls as “unethical and uncalled for, stressing that” no level of politics and public office holding should deny anybody the right to personal privacy”. He commended Akwa Ibom State government for the significant improvement in power supply especially within Uyo metropolis even as he urged the governor to ensure that effort was extended to other parts of the state. He equally commended the governor in the successful elimination of flooding along the traffic light end of Nsikak Eduok Avenue, adding, “I think the provision of infrastructure in some parts of the state is a welcome development and task the governor to look out for other parts of the state that have not yet benefited from such laudable efforts” Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/09/biafra-agitators-hailed-waking-national-conscience/ |

By Rotimi Ojomoyela Ado-Ekiti – Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has condemned the attack on the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu, and his supporters in Umuahia, Abia State on Sunday, by military men. Fayose who expressed concern that the All Progressives Congress- led Federal Government is becoming authoritarian and intolerable of dissenting voices, said the FG ought to have waited until it demand in court that Kanu’s bail be revoked is determined by the court before taken any action. He stated this in Ado-Ekiti on Monday while fielding questions from newsmen. “The invasion is condemnable and the present government is becoming authoritarian. It is proving not to be a peaceful one. The government is also operating double standards. They went to court to revoke his ball and they can’t be patient enough for the court to decide on the matter. “We need dialogue. People have to ask the FG what the Igbo people have done to deserve all this. Even if they have done anything wrong, they should be forgiven. The matter we have on hand is beyond Kanu,” he stated. On the defence by the military that IPOB members blocked their right of way and were the first to attack them, the governor noted that that was the same excuse they gave when they attacked Ibrahim el-Zakyzaky in Zaria, Kaduna State during which hundreds of people were killed. “Up until now, the man has been in detention and the defence by the military in Kanu’s case is similar and we can not allow been fooled again. They are also flying a kite that they are clamping down on hate speech, the question is what constitutes hate speech? ” This is nothing but another plot to descend on whoever they perceive as the opposition. As for me, nobody can cage me. The threat of imprisonment or death can not gag me. Their attempt at muzzling the opposition will fail. For me, I will continue to be the voice of the opposition,” he said. The governor also urged Nigerians to rise up to the occasion of defending democracy and put the FG to the task of allowing democracy to thrive and be sustained in the country. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/09/fayose-decries-military-attack-ipob-says-buhari-becoming-authoritarian/ |

The South-East Governors’ Forum has set-up a 7- man committee to investigate the recent clash between the Nigerian Army and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) members in Umuahia. Mr Michael Udah, the forum’s Director of Media and Communications, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the committee was expected to submit its report during the forum’s meeting scheduled for Sept.15. Udah did not mention the leader of the committee, but said that it was set-up to proffer lasting solutions to such problems and forestall future occurrences. “Reports in the social media that the governors condemned the alleged attack on IPOB members are false, but instead, they are working assiduously to bring lasting peace and stability to the zone. “I did not tell any medium on the social and print media that the governors condemned the incident as they would soon meet to review the situation,” he said. Udah said that the governors were consulting with relevant stakeholders in the zone including the military to ensure clarity of positions. “I urge my colleagues in the media to exercise decorum in their reportage to avoid creation of false and embarrassing impressions about sensitive national issues,” Udah said. https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2017/09/12/south-east-governors-set-committee-investigate-armyipob-clash/ |

The UN Security Council on Monday unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea , slapping a ban on textile exports and restricting shipments of oil products to punish Pyongyang for its sixth and largest nuclear test . With backing from China and Russia , the council adopted a US - drafted sanctions resolution just one month after banning exports of coal , lead and seafood in response to North Korea ’ s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile . US Ambassador Nikki Haley said the tough new measures were a message to Pyongyang that “ the world will never accept a nuclear - armed North Korea , ” but she also held out the prospect of a peaceful resolution to the crisis. “ We are not looking for war . The North Korean regime has not yet passed the point of no - return , ” Haley told the council . “ If it agrees to stop its nuclear program , it can reclaim its future. If it proves it can live in peace , the world will live in peace with it . “ If North Korea continues its dangerous path , we will continue with further pressure . The choice is theirs . ” The South Korean government welcome the resolution , calling it a “ grave warning that ( North Korea ’ s ) continued provocations will only intensify its diplomatic isolation and economic pressure. ” “ North Korea must realize that denuclearization is the only way to guarantee its security and economic development, ” a statement added . During tough negotiations , the United States dropped initial demands for a full oil embargo and a freeze on the foreign assets of North Korean leader Kim Jong - Un in a bid to win support from China and Russia . The resolution instead bans textile exports , cuts off natural gas shipments to North Korea , places a ceiling on deliveries of refined oil products and caps crude oil shipments at their current level . It bars countries from issuing new work permits to North Korean laborers sent abroad and seeks to phase out the practice by asking countries to report on the date for ending existing contracts . Some 93 , 000 North Koreans work abroad , providing Kim ’ s regime with a source of revenue to develop its missile and nuclear programs , according to a US official familiar with the negotiations . Under the measure , countries are authorized to inspect ships suspected of carrying banned North Korean cargo but must first seek the consent of the flag- state . Joint ventures will be banned and the names of senior North Korean official and three entities were added to a UN sanctions blacklist that provides for an assets freeze and a global travel ban . It was the eighth series of sanctions imposed on North Korea since it first tested a nuclear device in 2006 . – ‘ Big mistake ’ to avoid talks – The United States and its allies argue that tougher sanctions will pile pressure on Kim ’ s regime to come to the negotiation table to discuss an end to its nuclear and missile tests . Russia and China are pushing for talks with North Korea , but their proposal for a freeze on Pyongyang’ s missile and nuclear tests in exchange for suspending US - South Korean military drills has been rejected by the United States . Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the council it would be a “ big mistake to underestimate this Russia - China initiative ” for a so - called freeze - for - freeze , adding that Moscow would “ insist on it being considered. ” Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi again called for talks “ sooner rather than later. ” China , North Korea ’ s sole ally and main trading partner , had strongly objected to an oil embargo initially sought by the United States out of fear that it would bring the North ’ s economy to its knees . Instead , the level of crude oil is capped to the four million barrels it currently receives from a Chinese pipeline, while deliveries of refined oil products are limited to 500, 000 barrels for three months from October 1 and to two million barrels from January 1 for a period of 12 months . That would amount to a 10 percent cut in oil products , according to the US Energy Information Administration , which estimates annual exports to North Korea at nearly 2 . 2 million barrels . The US official said the ban on textile exports would deprive North Korea of some $ 726 million in annual revenue . Washington has said military action remains an option in dealing with Pyongyang and threatened to cut economic ties with countries that continue to trade with the it . Earlier, North Korea said it would not accept any chastisement over its nuclear and missile program , which it says is vital to stave off the threat of an American invasion , and threatened to cause the US “ the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history , ” in an official statement . Pyongyang has staged a series of missile tests in recent months that appeared to bring much of the US mainland into range . It followed up with a sixth nuclear test on September 3, its largest to date, which it said was a miniaturized hydrogen bomb . http://punchng.com/un-unanimously-backs-new-sanctions-on-north-korea/ |
