PoliticsRe: How To Join Politics by Mcanie: 6:20am On May 20, 2018
mathinips:
HOW TO JOIN POLITICS

Having convinced you that you can actually be actively involved in politics without contesting elections, let's consider the steps you need to take to get started.

1. Identify your Ward:
The ward is the smallest unit of Government in Politics. The Political Head of a Ward is called Councilor. Every politician must compulsorily be a card-carrying member of a political party at the ward level. This however is with the exception of those who choose to contest election as or support independent candidates. Your ward is not necessarily your home town but the locality where you will most conveniently carry out your political activities. It is also advisable that you also register with INEC as a voter in this ward.

2. Make the Choice of Political Party:
Consider the available political parties in your area and make a choice. I advise you study the manifesto and constitution of the party you want to join and agree that you align with her. Unfortunately, in Nigeria's nascent democracy, ideology is not well defined in the existing political parties, therefore, they almost share basic ideologies.

3. Get involved in Ward activities:
The least you can do as a politician is to attend your ward meetings. Get deeply involved at this stage. Contribute at meetings and assist once in a while in footing party bills either in kind or cash. This not easy and takes time and plenty of efforts. Once in a while, sponsor refreshments at meetings or volunteer to transport some members to meetings or other activities.

4. Identify like-minded believers in the party to relate with:
This is very important as decision are taken in politics based on majority of opinions. It is important that you align with your own class of people to ensure that decisions taken are not to the disadvantage of your interest.

5. Relate Well With The leaders:
That you want to make changes in the politics of your environment does not mean castigating existing leaders. Celebrate them for the good they have done and be silent on their evils, at least for a start. Success in politics is about who you know and not necessarily what you know.

6. Volunteer to be part of Campaigns/Party Activities:
Every political campaign and political activity needs hard workers. If you want to get an idea of how politics really work, walk into any campaign office of a candidate and offer to help out. You'll likely be asked to do what appears to be menial work at first, things like helping to register new voters or making phone calls and/or test messages on behalf of a candidate. But if you do the job well, you'll be given more responsibilities and more visible roles in the campaign.

7. Pay attention to Political Information: Unfortunately many are political illiterates. Before you get into politics, you ought to know what you're talking about and be able to hold an intelligent and thoughtful conversations about the issues. Local politicians and indeed the community respect you when you have better information at hand. That alone makes you a point of reference in your locality. Therefore, read your local newspaper(s), statewide newspapers and national newspapers. Be alive on the social media for information.

8. Get involved in your Community:
Attend Landlords/Residents meetings. Network with and be in good terms with local groups e.g The Vigilante, etc. Build coalitions dedicated to changing and improving your town such as the CDA or Tribal Unions. PTA meetings and Cooperative Societies are equally good places to be for upcoming politicians.

9. Build character and good name:
A good name is better than silver and gold. As corrupt as our society is, a good name still speaks volume. Strive to build for yourself and generations after you a good name. In whatever capacity you are entrusted with responsibility, make a good opportunity to leave a lasting impression in the hearts of the people.

10. If you must contest, start small:
There is no spirituality in insisting that certain offices are too small for you. Start from the grassroots and gradually work your way to the top. "All politics is local."
I don't totally agree with number 10, because the smaller you start, the more enemy you make as you climb. So you may end up never getting to the top. Cos at every stage you make enemies each time you defeat an opponent.

Secondly, destinies are different. Some start from the middle and still get there. Consider this situation, you are being offered appointment because of your intelligence or constructive thinking and from there you make your name like The Kingsley moghalus , Okonjo iweala, I've kachiukwu etc and then you decided to contest for something big and end up winning....?

…says claim attempt to divert attention

The Nigeria Police has vowed to undertake a comprehensive investigation of recent killings in Kwara State, not minding whose ox is gored. The Police made the declaration in response to an alarm raised by President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to the effect that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, was plotting to frame him up.

Saraki had, during plenary yesterday, informed his colleagues of an orchestrated plan to implicate him and the Kwara State government in the violent cult clashes that assaulted the state recently.

The Senate President had said that already, the IGP had directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of Kwara State Command, to transfer some suspected cultists arrested by operatives to Abuja, ostensibly to force them to re-write their statements. But, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Jimoh Moshood, in a statement, described the allegation as “a ruse, unfortunate and an attempt to divert Police investigation.”

Moshood explained that the subject matter of investigation concerned the killing of 11 persons by a killer squad which operates under the guise of a cult group. While not denying plans to transfer the suspects to Abuja, the FPRO maintained that it was standard practice in the force, to move suspects in high-profile cases to the Force Headquarters, for thorough investigations.

Consequently, Moshood said it will not leave any stone unturned in its efforts at serving the course of justice. This was as he expressed fears that the claim by the Senate President could dissuade victims’ family members from presenting evidence on the killings. His words: “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to press statement credited to the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON of “Plot against him by IGP”.

“The Nigeria Police Force is shocked at the unbelievable claims, unverifiable allegations and unfounded accusations being peddled against the IGP by the Senate President, accusing the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, of plot and strategies against him to settle scores.

“The Force, therefore, wishes to categorically state that there is no iota of truth in the allegation and false assertion by the Senate President of plot against him by the IGP to implicate the Kwara State Government and the Senate President in any criminal matter. Until investigation is concluded, any person(s) or group(s) who tries to interfere in the investigation process by action or utterances is committing an offence,” Moshood said.

Giving a background to the case, he said the Kwara State Police Command, on the 11th of May 2018, arrested and paraded the suspected cultists, whose names he listed as follows: Abolaji Safti Ojulari, Lanre Mohammed Soliu, Azeez Moyaki, Suleiman Babatunde Yusuf Habeeb, and Umar Yahaya.

According to Moshood, “The suspects admitted and confessed before the press and the public to have killed 11 innocent persons in Kwara State and other states of the country.

The victims, according to the suspects, were targeted and killed on the instructions of their sponsors. “Consequent upon the public confessions of this vicious and notorious killer squad to the killings in cold blood of more than 11 innocent people in Kwara State and other states of the Federation, the statutory procedure and practice in the Force is that such a heinous crime and capital offence is transferred to the Force Headquarters for further investigation.

This is to enable a thorough and discreet investigation into the crime.

“However, it is pertinent to state that, there is no vested interest by the IGP in the ongoing investigation into the several murders committed by this killer gang, other than ensuring that justice prevails in the matter. Nobody, no matter how highly placed, would be allowed to interfere or obstruct Police investigation to pervert the course of justice.

“Therefore, transferring this hired assassin gang masquerading as cultists in Kwara State to Force Headquarters, Abuja for further investigation is in accordance with Police investigation procedures.”

He concluded by saying that: “The Nigeria Police Force hereby implores members of the general public to disregard and discountenance the claim of plot by the IGP against the Senate President as a ruse, unfortunate and an attempt to divert police investigation into the killings of more than 11 innocent people from Kwara State and other states of the Federation in the recent past by the killer squad which operate under the guise of a cult group.

“The Force will leave no stone unturned and will do everything within the ambit of the law to ensure justice in this matter, no matter whose ox is gored.”

The suspects, who have been transferred to Abuja for further investigation, SaharaRepoters learned, named the Senate President and Mr. Ahmed in the confessional statements made to the Police.

According to the statements made to the Police, the suspects said they have been on the payroll of the Kwara State Government and Mandate Office of Mr. Saraki.

The leader of the killer squad, the son of Salihu Woru the self-appointed spokesman of Magajis in Ilorin Emirate, is placed on salary Grade Level 16, while his colleagues are on Levels 10 to 15.

The suspects, SaharaReporters gathered, also admitted that they were being paid from the Office of the Senate President. Mr. Saraki, the suspects told the Police, gave them Toyota Corolla cars a few months ago as a way of securing the loyalty ahead of the 2019 elections.
