Politics / 2019: We Will Not Condone Electoral Violence – Enugu APC Tells PDP by mcebisco06: 8:48pm On Nov 26, 2017
The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State, on Sunday warned the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, against engaging in any form of electoral violence in the 2019 general elections.

The APC said no amount of political thuggery, harassment, attack, and intimidation would make its members run away from the political environment in the state.

It declared that “Enugu State belongs to all of us, and we are all equal stakeholders.”

Chairman of the APC in the State, Dr. Ben Nwoye stated this in Agbani, Nkanu West local government area of the State, during the defection of some chieftains of the PDP and their supporters to the APC.

He re-echoed his allegations that the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC, connived with the PDP “to steal APC’s electoral mandate during the November 4, local government election in the state.”

Among the PDP defectors were a former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Barr. Ifeanyi Nwoga, a one time youth leader, Tony Nwachukwu, and Uche Udoko, among others.

Nwoye noted that the alleged political atrocities committed by the Chief Mike Ajogwu led-ENSIEC during the November council polls, which led to the abduction and brutalization of his party’s 2015 governorship candidate, chief Okey Ezea, would continue to hurt the commission’s boss.

Receiving the new entrants into its fold, the national chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, represented by national Vice chairman of the party in charge of South- East, Chief Emma Eneukwu, applauded the courage of the former PDP stalwarts, saying their decision was a wise one.

Oyegun hailed the state chairman, Nwoye, former secretary to Enugu state government SSG, Chief Onyemuce Nnamani, Nkanu West chairman of the party, Sunday Eze, as well as other chieftains of the APC in the locality for winning souls for the party.

He urged them to keep the flag flying, as APC remained the easiest route to Igbo presidency after president Buhari’s 2nd term in office.

In his brief remarks, Barrister Nwoga said that he decided to join the party because it was a political platform for the progressives.

While promising to assist in building the party in his local government area, Nkanu West, the ex-commissioner, equally pledged to rent an office space for members in the locality, come January 2018.

Other APC stalwarts Present at the ceremony included, former National secretary of the PDP, Chief Rex Onyeabor, South-East publicity secretary of APC, Chief Hycienth Ngwu, ex-secretary to the Enugu State Government , Barrister Nnamani, former Enugu State Commissioner for culture and Tourism, Joe Mmamel, who stood in for the immediate past governor of the state, Barrister Sullvan Chime, among others.

Politics / PDP May Lose Cross River – Federal Legislators Report Ayade To Makarfi by mcebisco06: 10:20am On Nov 08, 2017
Cross River State People’s Democratic Party (PDP), caucus in the National Assembly Caucus have accused Governor Ben Ayade of highhandedness.

The federal legislators also condemned the state congresses which they described as non-inclusive.

The lawmakers from the state, in a letter to the National Chairman of the PDP, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, warned that unless something urgent was done to remedy the situation, the party stood a poor chance in the 2019 elections.

The letter signed by nine legislators led by Senator Rose Oko (Cross River North) accused the governor of hijacking the state’s congresses to the exclusion of stakeholders.

Others that signed the petition included Senator Gershom Bassey, Hon. Ayibe Ngoro, Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa, Hon. Daniel Asuquo, Hon. Eja Mbora, Hon. Jarigbe Agom, Hon. Essien Ayi and Hon. Legor Idagbo.

It read in part: “We bring to your attention the state of the structure of the PDP in Cross River State. The 2016 party congresses ostensibly saw the election of new officials for the state, local government area and ward executive officers for the party.

“There was, however, an aberration in the manner the congresses were done, as they excluded party stakeholders and elders across the state that became tantamount to a selection rather than an election.

“The implication of this is that there is now a general apathy and despondency among party members in the state, most of whom have felt the need to move out of the party to other parties, and indeed have done so”.

Politics / I Demolished Eke-ukwu Market To Rescue Imo People From Female Deity – Okorocha by mcebisco06: 10:50am On Nov 06, 2017
The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday said he ordered the demolition of popular Eke-Ukwu market in Owerri, the state capital, to deliver Imo people from a female deity.

In a press release signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, the governor also claimed that ahead of the 2019 governorship election, some politicians in the state had started administering oath on citizens.

The statement reads in part: “The State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has warned certain politicians in the state, especially those with governorship ambition against administering oath on Imo people who are either members or officials of their political parties.

“The governor also advised members and officials of the political parties not to subscribe or allow themselves to be subjected to oath taking for any reason by any politician or aspirant because it is ungodly to do so.

“One of the first things I did on assumption of office as governor was to build a befitting chapel in front of the Government House and also erected the statue of a man with the Holy Bible in his hand to show Imo people the direction of his administration.

“And one of the reasons I also decided to demolish and relocate Ekeukwu Market was when the unfounded story of a female deity owning the market came up and I resolved that Imo people would never be in a market said to be owned by a deity.”

Politics / Nigerian Govt Reacts To Planned Deportation Of 1000 Turks by mcebisco06: 10:08am On Oct 24, 2017
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama has refuted reports that 1,000 Turks will be extradited from Nigeria on the request of the Turkish government.

Onyeama was said to have told journalists, weekend, in Istanbul, Turkey that Nigerian government was considering deporting the Turkish nationals suspected to belong to the Gulen movement.

The Turkish government said the movement was responsible for the last year’s botched coup in that country, an accusation the Gulen movement denied.

The minister was quoted as saying: “There was the request for the extradition of some of the Turks in Nigeria who have been given asylum and recognized by the United Nations as political refugees and the Turkish government requested that we extradite some of them.

“There was also the request that the schools and hospitals established by Gülen Movement should be closed in Nigeria. They now labelled Fethtulah as a terrorist organization”.

Reacting via a statement by his media aide, Sarah Sanda, the minister insisted there was no agreement between the two governments to extradite certain Turks.

Onyeama assured all foreign nationals, including Turks resident in the country legally, of full protection under http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2017/10/nigerian-government-reacts-to-planned.html

Crime / Customs Intercepts 3 Containers With 140 Species Of Live Snakes, Geckos, Spiders by mcebisco06: 10:11pm On Jul 29, 2017
Customs Area Comptroller in charge of Calabar Free Trade Zone, Cross River and Akwa Ibom Command, Mrs. Nanbyen Burromvyat, has said the command intercepted three consignments containing 140 species of snakes imported into Nigeria.
Also, the command intercepted 600 animals, made up of geckos, millipedes, hairy frogs and spiders, in the containers.
The items were said to have been imported from Cameroon and were intercepted by officers on July 24, 2017, on arrival at the NIWA jetty, with a market value of N6.9 million.
Burromvyat said the consignments, which were Lagos-bound, were prohibited items, under Schedule 3 of the Revised Import Prohibition List (Trade) in the Common External Tariff.
A list of the items contained in the packaging list had snakes such as Atheris squamigera, Bitis gobanica, Dasypeltis ssp, Boiga pulverinata, among others, while the geckos were Hemidactylus frenatus and Hemidactylus fasciatus.
Though the containers were not opened for fear of escape, Burromvyat handed over the items and the two suspects to authorities of the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services for investigation.
She said: “These containers have animals of different sizes. They were brought in on July 24, 2017, through this Calabar waterway. The consignment was spotted by our vigilant officers and they contain live animals.

“There is no provision for permit to bring them in. We are seizing them and handing the containers over to the Nigerian Quarantine Services for further necessary action.
“I do not know what they want to do with it, but I think it will be dangerous for us because it contains snake, spiders, geckos and other creatures. We have enough snakes around Nigeria already and it will be suspicious importing this. I do not know what to think because I do not know what they can be used for.”

Foreign Affairs / North Korea Launches Another Ballistic Missile by mcebisco06: 10:04pm On Jul 29, 2017
North Korea launched a ballistic missile Friday, the Pentagon said, just weeks after Pyongyang tested an intercontinental rocket capable of hitting parts of the United States.
South Korea’s military and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also confirmed the launch. In Seoul and Tokyo, the governments convened meetings of their national security councils.
Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the launch occurred at about 1445 GMT, but it was not immediately known what type of missile it was.
“I can confirm that we detected a launch of a ballistic missile from North Korea,” Davis told Pentagon reporters.
“We are assessing and will have more information soon.”
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing the country’s military joint chiefs of staff, said the missile was launched from North Korea’s Jagang province, and landed in the East Sea (Sea of Japan).
“There is a possibility that it landed within our EEZ (exclusive economic zone). We will be analyzing it immediately and do our best for the safety of our people,” Abe told reporters in Tokyo.
The US military and South Korea had in recent days warned that North Korea appeared to be prepping for another missile test — likely of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), or else an intermediate-range rocket.
Pyongyang triggered global alarm on July 4 when it test-fired its first ICBM, which experts believe could have the potential to reach Alaska.

Politics / "Buhari’s Recovery Is A Miracle" - Dave Umahi, Ebonyi Governor by mcebisco06: 5:42am On Jul 27, 2017
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr. Dave Umahi, has described the rate of the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari as a miracle.

Umahi, who is one of the seven governors that visited the President in London on Wednesday night, told one of our correspondents on the telephone from London, that he and his colleagues were surprised with the level of his (President) recovery.

Apart from Umahi, others governors in the entourage are Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara); Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo); Samuel Ortom (Benue); Umar Ganduje (Kano); and Kashim Shettima (Borno).

Six of the governors were chosen based on the six geo-political zones in the country while the governor of Zamfara State was picked because of his position as the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum.

Umahi, who was one of the two governors from the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, said that it was difficult for members of the opposition to believe what they were being told by the handlers of the President that he was getting better.

He, however, said that he was happy, just like the other six governors, that the President was making progress and that he had improved very well.

The governor said the President would soon return to the country as soon as his doctors certified him alright.

He said, “We met a cheerful President whose level of recovery is a miracle. We know he will soon return home as soon as his doctors certify him to do so. What he’s treating is not mere malaria that we can say he will return today or tomorrow.

“However, we are happy and we thank God for what we saw. It is contrary to the pictures people are painting on the social media. The President we saw is recuperating well and we are happy for that.

“It is even better that, we as members of the opposition party, are among the entourage. Nigerians should continue to pray for the President. “

Asked whether the President told them the likely date of his return, he said no, adding that there was no need to be too expectant, saying that the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), was doing a good job.

“We don’t need to panic because we have a hardworking acting President who is doing a fantastic job. All we need to do as Nigerians is to continue to pray for the President,” the governor added.

It was gathered that the governors had lunch with the President before leaving.

The Presidency later released some pictures showing the President in a conversation with the governors.

There was also a group picture showing Buhari standing with the visiting governors after the meeting.

Another picture showed the President with his wife, Aisha, and another unidentified lady on a sofa.

Ajimobi later wrote on his Twitter handle and Facebook page that the President received him and his colleagues warmly.

“My counterparts, the Governor’s Forum delegation and I were warmly received by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari in London, United Kingdom,” he wrote.

Nigeria’s former Ambassador to the United States of America, USA, Professor George Obiozor, has asked the Federal Government to make haste by heeding the clamour for restructuring of the country to prevent eventual break up.
Obiozor speaking at the “Big Ideas Podium,” at the African Heritage Institute, Enugu and moderated by former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, cautioned that political goodwill was needed to ensure decisive action which would guarantee the rights of all the citizens regardless of ethnic, regional or religious affiliation.
Obiozor said: “It is clear that unless the leaders learn the lesson of history and act soon, the call‎ for restructuring will be followed by calls for national referendum (on the way forward).
“Indeed, the referendum option is already here with us and looms high as national and international agenda to settle the Nigeria national question.
“And those who think they can stop it must take a second look at the present international system. All over, the world is rejecting unity without justice and peace without justice.
“I know for instance that majority of Igbo prefer a united Nigeria but not unity of slaves and masters and also want peace ‎but not peace of the grave yard. Nigeria is in Jeopardy but the problems are not insurmountable.”
