Public confidence in the selection process for the Fifa Ballon d’Or has never been lower. Over the last few years there has been clear favouritism towards certain players and clubs – particularly Barcelona who have made up 10 of the last 15 podium places.

It is very difficult for many football fans to take the award seriously given some of the inexplicable omissions in recent times – from Wesley Sneijder in 2010 to Arjen Robben last year.

The underlying feeling is that the Ballon d’Or has become a political prize, which are backed up by the views expressed this week by last year’s bronze medallist Franck Ribery.

"I learned a lot during last year's Ballon d'Or gala. As soon as I got there, I told my wife that I would lose," he told Sport Bild.

"There is a lot of politics. I saw how Sepp Blatter was hugging Ronaldo and how his entire family was there. I'm not stupid. It was clear that he had to win it. He wouldn't have brought his entire family with him otherwise.”

This latest storm is not really about Ronaldo or Madrid, it is about ethics. While the Ballon d’Or is a Fifa award, someone with as much political influence as the president of Uefa should not be publicly revealing his personal favourite. The head of any governing body must be 100 per cent neutral at all times.

Could you imagine the uproar if the chairman of the Football Association stated that he wanted Manchester United to win the Premier League? It would bring the English game into disrepute.

Just as it did the Italian game in 2009 when then Italy coach Marcello Lippi tipped Juventus to win the Scudetto. "A man with great institutional responsibility should not take sides," slammed then Inter boss Jose Mourinho.

And he was right. Platini has scored a spectacular own goal and only provided more fuel for the critics of the Ballon d’Or, as well as those of Uefa and Fifa.

even if we agree with this that penalties are also goals - götze still shytes on hazard.

from 2010/11,

gotze has scored 39 league goals in 7,166 mins. hazard has scored 54 league goals in 12,821 minutes.

gotze finds the net every 183 mins, hazard(including his awoof penalties) finds the net in every 237 mins. that's a difference of 50 mins.

even if we look at their assist stats.....

gotze has assisted a league goal 44 times since 2010/11 & hazard has assisted a league goal 60 times in the same period.

gotze assists a goal in every 163 mins while uncle hazard can only manage the feat in every 214 mins. that's another 50 mins difference between the two.

hazard must wait 50 mins after gotze had already either scored or assisted a goal before he can contribute in a match. what a damning statistic & a huge blow to all y'all hazard fawners.


i'll let the neutrals draw their conclusion from this. gotze was only 18 years of age at the start of 10/11 season.

Either we bring Herrera back into the starting eleven and drop a Fellaini or Carrick, or we drop RVP, shift Rooney uptop and play Mata or even Januzaj. We are no where near constructive enough going forward and luck along with DDG will only take us so far. Unlike most I don't see the next few games as certain wins at all. Hull maybe, but Stoke, Southampton and Liverpool won't be easy going by our current form and we won't be able to soak it up and counter against these sides, we will have to break them down.

No one will say it, but Di Maria is quite underwhelming for a British record signing, flashes here and there, but its clear he can't put this side on his back going forward, whether he is played wide or centrally. Our present set up where we are trying to rely on him isn't working. He needs help.

With the present injury situation I can't even attempt to name a back 4 beyond DDG. But in midfield and attack, I feel it is important we find a way to keep some combination of at least 3 of Herrera, Mata, Di Maria, Rooney in the midfield and attacking positions.
