Music/RadioRe: FM Radio Presenters In Nigeria In the 1980s, '90s And Early 2000s by MD45: 2:17pm On Aug 23, 2023
naptu2:
I didn't plan to mention all presenters/radio stations, just some that defined certain eras for me.

RN2 in the 1980s, OGBC2 in the early 1990s, Raypower in the mid-1990s, Rhythm in the late 1990s and Cool FM in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

I expected that others would also mention the stations and presenters that defined that period for them and they have done so, but surprisingly nobody has mentioned this man. He was on my mind when I wrote that post years ago, even though I didn't mention his name.

I wrote that Radio Nigeria 3 started in 1989. Well this man was the star of the station and he was incredible. He could host many programmes back to back and in many different languages. I'm referring to Bisi Olatilo

I still remember some of the things that he said on RN3.

I remember when he talked about Iya Modinat on his show. I was shocked.

Iya Modinat was a woman that sold food under a tree in Obalende. I had heard about her, but I didn't believe it until I saw it. Cars used to come from State House Dodan Barracks, from the many state liaison offices on Victoria Island, from the homes of wealthy people across Lagos, just to buy rice from a rude woman that sold food under a tree. You would see NTA newscasters and all kinds of celebrities queuing to buy food from this woman in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I refused to eat her food.

One day there was a commotion in Obalende and I was told that people attacked Iya Modinat and her children because they said that she was using juju in her food.

Bisi Olatilo spoke about her on his radio show (that was when she was still doing brisk business).

I remember the day that he started talking about parts of Lagos. He said that it was one man that started spare parts business in Alaba, now there are spare parts shops everywhere. It was one man that started chemist business in Obalende, now there are chemist shops everywhere in Obalende. He kept talking about places that were known for certain things and how it was started by an individual.

He presented programmes in Pidgin, Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba on RN3 (it was the first community station in Nigeria).

Now we have Wazobia FM, Naija FM, etc.
The combo of Bisi Olatilo and Smart Orotemu was always a delight to listen to because of the jokes and strong grasp of pidgin English. Smart was just a comedian on radio. Together they moved a great portion of radio listeners to RN3.

It was from Smart I heard this joke-proverb “person way shit for bush nor dey remember d place reach person way match shit for bush”. grin

Another OAP was Ijeoma Benlowu. RN2 also had Ndidi Osoka.

Have we forgotten Akin Akindele of RayPower then. The comedian from AJ City that was pouched from RN2. He used to feature in a comedy programme then with the stage name Baba Lamidi at RN2

Also, the OB van concept Raypower popularized then.

I love Kenny Ogungbe's signature tune that start playing at 5pm.... "Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home,.....

They say Radio is the theater of the mind . I got to start listening more to the radio while I was in secondary . After we are done with the family radio, I will turn on my battery powered radio and listen all through the night. I was warned several times of the dame the earpiece could do to the ear if I sleep with it, I couldn't listen because of the love I had for radio
@naptu2. You didn't mention shows like Cruise control , Metro Fm, hosted by Frank Edoho afterwhich Kamala took over.. it starts airing by 7 to 9. The music people always request for is so so soothing . Even the show's theme song, Sunset Island by Earl Klugh is one I still listen to many times to ease off.
Metro fm also has Doris Okafor that anchors the show, Rock City. I will like to see what Doris looks likes frankly , she was lovely with what she does .

I think it is Metro Fm that has this program called Straight from the heart .I will so so love to have this show back on air. It is a show where heart touching stori3s are read and backed up with music that pertains to whatever keywords that were being read at that time. It airs at night .

Rhythm fm with Shola Thomson. That guy with the fluid smooth voice.

I then got to like Cool fm. Early 2000s they came with weekly Top 40 . Presenters like Manny, Daddy freeze, Gbemi Olateju,

Night radios are the best! After the days work. You come back home, relax and listen to the radio while it soothens your soul. Even the conversations and talk shows are just top notch. Midnight radios are even better.

Honestly, I am not feeling today's radio as I use to. I couldn't go a day without radio then. Now, I try to listen to my car radio and all I hear aren't interesting or worthy of my attention. Only time these our modern radio stations get interesting are during the Elections.
This is for those who don't know "Earl Klugh". Kindly listen to his great album here "Soda Fountain Shuffle". I so love this album die! I still listen to the whole album on my iPhone.

You are a great man abeg!!

What about from RayPower FM then:- Hellen Bassey, Toun Oni, Yemi Adenuga, Orji Onazi, Helen Nwoko, remember Jumobi Adegbesan's signature tune was Whitney Houston's - I'm Every Woman (acapella version). Programmes like Straight From The Heart, Rick Dees Weekly Top 40, Jazz with Bisade Ologunde.

Oh my God! Time flies and I am missing Naija badly

Is it Pata Pata by Mariam Makeba?
No it is not the ever golden "Pata Pata". The song was sang in an African language. The use to play it always on RN2. One of their female presenters then also had it as her signature tune whenever she wants to come on air. This song was being played then on RN2 around 1986 to like 1990. Maybe the lady that sang the song could even be from West Africa but I just can't remember again, so I need a great mind like you to help out on this one.

In the 1990s they started playing "Emlanjeni by Mafikizolo", another great song!

Thank you naptu for doing this. I was always hooked on to Raypower and most especially Eko FM as Ibadan hard no private radio station then except one useless government radio station. Oluyole FM.

Kenny Ogungbe and his friend Dayo Adeneye were a delight to listen to on Raypower before they fell out with the late Raymond Dokpesi

Always had a running battle with my elder sister because I don monopolize the family radio permanently on Eko FM. Used to alternate between EKO FM, Raypower and OGBC She would say "We dey live for Ibadan, you dey listen to Lagos Radio". grin

But now,Ibadan has almost 50radio stations if I am right, and the state with the most radio station after Lagos.

P S. Femi Sowoolu has a radio station in Ibadan named "Jamz FM" you can check it out
Those three names you mentioned that I have emboldened somehow can be linked to the root of the growth of the Nigerian music industry as we know it today. If you know ... you know. Kenny and D1 experimented with The Remedies, then followed by The Plantation Boiz and everybody else wanted to start singing!!!

No greenlight, no approach as Ubunja has been saying in his miseducations, but these simps always think they know better.
Women only offer their vagina to extract resources or to tie you down in a long term monogamous relationship so as to continue to enjoy the comfort and security that you provide.
As a guy, if you are not wealthy or very handsome, there is no point in cold approaching any woman as you'll just gross her out with your willing and needy attitude with nothing tangible to offer her.
Its a cold world out there and the earlier you simps learn to act the part, the better.
A woman could do this to any man and you wont see any dust being raised because the rules are slightly different. the vagina enjoys a more prestigious position than the phalus.

I see your point but in my view corruption is the cancer and misplaced value judgment is just a benign tumor. Corruption is intrinsically evil and have no consideration for the well being of his neighbor or society. Misplaced value judgment will self-correct because the consequences of it will clearly demonstrate that it is a wrong call. But corruption is self-serving and is only interested in personal gains and have no regard for the ethics or morality by which those gains were achieved. A corrupt society follows the Machiavellian principle of the "end justifies the means"

Yes, nobody wants to be a doctor, nurse, teacher, farmer etc as you mentioned because corruption made it virtually impossible for called and genuine doctors, teachers, farmers, plumbers etc to rise to the position where they can make or influence policy; policies that would have provided the enabling environment for the development of the human capital.

Yes, our politicians rush abroad for medical treatment because the can not trust their health to Nigerian hospitals and doctors. Indeed, is it not ironic that they are taken a flight from the same health infrastructures their corrupt activities created? Western doctors seem better because of the healthy and non-corrupt health infrastructure. But make no mistake, some Nigerian doctors are medical whizkids, literally performing miracles with little or no instrumentation. As I said with students in my previous post, let Nigeria provide a little enabling environment for Nigerian medics and they will fly. I lived half of my adult life in Nigeria and the other half in the West and have experienced both health systems. Remove the sophisticated diagnostic instrumentations from an average medical doctor in the West and he will be nothing more than a WebMD. Sadly, we Nigerians are mentally colonized for we always think that whatever is in the first world is better. It is not that simple.

Our education system and the actors in it are all products of corrupt policies. In the 21st centaury, Nigerian Education system is based on memory intelligence. If you can regurgitate the meaningless garbage doled to you by your teachers or outdated books, then you graduate with flying colors. Memory intelligence is just a very small aspect of overall intelligence. A modern education system should be based on critical/analytical thinking and problem solving. In Scandinavian which in my opinion have the "best" educational system (Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark), group work, problem solving and critical thinking are embedded in the education of a child, right from kindergarten. But in Nigeria, we burden kids with cramming the names of governors and things of a similar nature? How will recollection of the names of 36 states in Nigeria help a child detect gaps in a puzzle or question the entire concept of a given puzzle. On my return to Nigeria, I was teaching a Molecular Genetics class. When I introduced critical thinking and problem solving in students evaluation, the result was a disaster. More than 95% of the A grade students performed badly while some of the so called C and D grade students were making A grades. It is dawned on me that we are in trouble as a Nation. Hopefully, we will get our acts together or else we will become extinct. Cheers
The problem to me is not first corruption but the Nigerian people. The politicians have not been held accountable for their stewardship. They have been very smart to ensure that Nigerians don’t go hungry (or fell insecure) for that is only when Nigerians will wake up from their slumber. Hence the reason why they subsidize things here and there, collapse the educational sector and hold the people in bondage.

And this game profits foreign powers as Africa’s backwardness is the fuel that runs their economies.

All of this exploitation of the Nigerian people will stop when oil becomes worthless (less than 10 years from now). The political class are even failing at their own game as people are getting hungrier and more insecured.

Note that corruption will not stop for its as old as mankind. Just simply know your rights and demand for it at all times as you think out of the box.

Great thread with great minds. ..... Just to add. I hope we do calculate our Networth from time to time (like quarterly if you can) to keep a birds eye view of where you are on your investing journey and to help track progress.

It helps you to identify your idle funds, blood clots (non performing investments), where their are opportunities and sharpen your cutting edge

Whatsoever it shows you....... please ensure you keep one third of your wealth in your own hands (1/3).... COVID-19 is still recking investors

Convert your Networth too to US Dollars to see how you meet up in the international scene of investors globally and draw inspiration from there to never look back again

Wow, thank you for information. Frankly speaking, immigration to Canada turned out to be a real trial or even kind of challenge, because it was so difficult... By the way, thank heaven, my friend that moved to Canada helped me a lot, at least when he sent me the article about Immigration to Canada that helped him one time to immigrate to Canada. To be honest, I even was forced to turn to the ItsCandaTime agency, that was mentioned in the article, in the hope that they will simplify my immigration to Canada as I wasn't able to embody some issues that were listed in the article. Seriously, I didn't even think that immigration to Canada will be so difficult, but still everything was successful, so now I live in Canada smiley

FamilyRe: 1 Year After Marriage, I Am Already Tired by MD45: 1:36pm On Aug 13, 2019
goodgirl2409:
My husband has really changed. He is so unemotional and revengeful.
I will cook for him severally and he won’t eat. I will serve him food and he won’t eat. I will ask him what I have done and he won’t respond. Every time he gives me the silent treatment.

I feel so pained because I expected more from this marriage but barely 1 year after, he doesn’t seem to love me anymore. Sometimes 1 month will pass, no sex. He would go out and won’t bother to tell me where he is going.

He would come back very late and would just ignore me like I don’t exist.
Although he drops money for me to run the house and communicates strictly with me, it make no sense to me.
I am tired. Is this how marriage is? Is this how men are or am I just suffering?

I don’t have anyone to beg to talk to him,and I was told reporting him to any of his family members is not good. things are getting worse everyday. People who have married for many years and are succeeding please help me. What am I not doing right?

UPDATE.
I want to add that it is not sexual incompatibility.
When he is in his happy mood, I would even be tired of his endless gist. S-x will be very great. He is kind and caring. Such a wonderful man. In fact an angel. He would even wash my underwear’s and clothes.

But when his mood start which is his mood most of the time, he won’t talk to you, he won’t eat. I will finish cooking, he will go outside and buy another food and come and cook. He won’t come back on time. I will ask him what is it, he would not respond. He always feels everything I do to annoy him, i do it on purpose. I am a peace loving person. Everyone around that knows the story
always say that he has a problem.
Your problem is that you are not listening to your husband's feedback and taking them seriously. This is the problem of this marriage.

Let me explain: listen to what he says he likes and listen to what he says he doesn't like. Don't do the things he says he does not like and do the ones he likes and watch things turn around.

Some guys when upset with their wives beat them up. He doesn't want to do that, so another approach is to ignore anything that has to do with you.

So change immediately before pride kills your marriage

Our super eagles has more of players who play without brains (the bane of African football). Using just strength and foot-work is not just enough. Ighalo, iwobi, ndidi and ekong were they ones applying brains for us the remaining players na banza!. You can't do much with 4 out of 11. Senegal has like 6 out of 11 and Algeria has like 9 out of 11. Most importantly you need at least 3 tournament winning players out of the 11 brainys for you to compete for the cup. We had non. Senegal 1, Algeria 1. Super eagles will always under achieve until we fix this problem.
