The call by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, that former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, be probed over the management of the Abacha loot is a politically sponsored campaign to serve an agenda, Mr. Paul Nwachukwu, her Media Adviser , has alleged.

“It is curious that SERAP, ignoring more worthy issues, decided to embark on this fishing expedition of a 10 year old process that was handled in an exemplary and transparent fashion. This shows that neither the organization nor its charges should be taken seriously.

“Even though SERAP says its allegations were based on a World Bank statement, it neglected to tell the world that the same World Bank actively collaborated with the Federal Ministry of Finance on a 2006 field report which analyzed how the repatriated funds were used,” he said in a statement, yesterday.

According to Mr. Nwabuikwu, “It will be recalled that, as part of the repatriation process, the Swiss government requested and the Nigerian government under President Obasanjo agreed that the World Bank should monitor the use of the repatriated Abacha funds.

“The field survey, released in 2006, is titled ‘Utilization of Repatriated Abacha loot: Results of the Field Monitoring Exercise’. It shows that specific funds were indeed transparently programmed and used to boost the budgets of specific target ministries in 2004 and 2005.”

He admitted that Civil Society Organisation, CSOs paly critical roles in ensuring transparent management of public funds, globally but that SERAP has made itself a tool in the hands of corrupt interests.

“To say the obvious, civil society groups play a very important role in putting positive pressure on government to remain focused on good governance in order to ensure that clear and measurable results are achieved. No country can manage governance to global standards without civil society groups. And Nigeria is no exception. Nigeria has many credible advocacy groups doing important work in many areas.

“It is therefore sad that SERAP which has made other false allegations against Okonjo-Iweala is hiding under the hallowed umbrella of civil society while acting as a tool for reprehensible, corrupt vested interests,” he said.

Mr. Nwabuikwu insisted, “No amount of sponsored propaganda can conceal the fact that the implementation of the agreement with the Swiss government was done transparently and the report was publicly issued. The entire process was properly managed and reviewed with the help of reputable international organizations.”

Leader of the Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday, charged members of the movement to remain steadfast and focused in the revolutionary struggle, saying that the non-violent method adopted by MASSOB had become a source of worry to the so-called northern socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and the Nigerian military.

Uwazuruike insisted that there was no going back in his bid to actualize Biafra now or never, stressing that he was in the struggle for freedom not for any other person but for his own children,
who, he said, desire a free country where the security of their lives and properties can be guaranteed.

The MASSOB leader, who spoke through the Deputy National Director for Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, weekend, at a special meeting of Enugu West Senatorial District, in Nachi, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, lamented that since Nigeria got her independence in 1960, it had never guaranteed security of lives and properties of Ndigbo, a situation, which he claimed, persuaded him to seek independence of Biafra.

He frowned that some Igbo elite had become stooges to our oppressors, who often used them to do odd jobs and also sponsor them to make blatant comments to discredit Biafra in order to win contracts from their masters in Abuja.

He regretted that such elite, because of the peanuts they were getting from the oppressors, would accept to sabotage the Biafra struggle without knowing how much MASSOB had laboured in the past 16 years, insisting that their plans were bound to fail.

According to Uwazuruike,
“ACF had asked Allah to give them Boko Haram, he gave to them and they became comfortable with its outcome. Afenifere elders had Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, fighting for social justice in Yoruba land.
I am very happy that Biafra is being talked about all over the world and people are being killed and detained for the sake of Biafra. So, if I fail to get Biafra, then I would have failed to do what Ndigbo expected of me and if I also die for the sake of Biafra, I will be fulfilled.”

Sepp Blatter, the suspended president of soccer’s world governing body FIFA, is spending the week in a Swiss hospital following a stress-related incident, according to his personal spokesman Klaus Stohlker. Blatter, 79, had originally undergone tests and planned to stay home, but his doctors elected to keep him under observation in hospital over the weekend, said the spokesman.

Stohlker added that Blatter, who is serving a 90-day suspension imposed by FIFA’s disciplinary body in October, is doing well and “fully working on his fight against the ethics committee.

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) on Wednesday sealed six companies for failure to remit N18.73 million personal income taxes of their workers to the state government. The Assistant Head of Distrain Unit of the LIRS, Mrs Oluwalomona Ekosanmi, disclosed this to newsmen in Lagos after an enforcement exercise.

Ekosanmi, who led the enforcement team, said that the affected companies had tax liabilities of between 12 months and six years. Ekosanmi urged firms operating in the state to regularly remit personal income taxes of their workers to the service to avoid any embarrassment and disruption that would come with distrain.

“Tax-payment is a civic responsibility of everyone because it is a major source of government’s revenue and also the only means government can provide the basic amenities for its citizens to improve their living standards,” she said. Meanwhile, some of the affected companies complained of unfair treatment from LIRS, saying that the service did not notify them before coming to close their premises.

Ekosanmi, however, said that LIRS usually sent two letters of notice to the defaulting companies before they embarked on the clamp-down exercise. According to her, LIRS sends tax liabilities demand notice and notice of intent to the affected companies as required by the Personal Income Tax Act (Amendment) of 2011.

“Each of the letters that we sent to the companies was received and acknowledged by any of companies’ staff or the management of the firms. “So, for some of the companies to say that LIRS did not notify them before coming to seal their premises is not an excuse.

“Normally, firms are not even supposed to wait for anybody to remind them of their statutory obligation of remitting taxes to the government of the land where they operate,” she said. The team leader said that the enforcement exercise would continue until tax-payers imbibed the culture of voluntary tax compliance.

The affected companies includes an oil and gas firm, a paint manufacturing firm, an electrical firm and a conglomerate, among others.
