conveniently forgetting brazil were yet to win a world cup until then(1958). . . .they were under a huge pressure to deliver and the country had given up even before the world cup started because of garrincha's irresponsibility.  with pelé and garrincha playing together, the brazilian national team never lost a match.
Colombia and Spain were the favourites for the 94 and 98 world cups respectively. . . It's more about quality and form than history. Besides, Brazil had finished as runners up and also finished in third place in previous editions.
I doubt there was ever a time when Brazil werent a force in football.

this excerpt was taken from garrincha's autobiography:

Garrincha was the player, said the playwright Nelson Rodrigues, who taught the fans to laugh. His on-pitch clowning is perhaps best illustrated by the occasion when, faced with an open goal, he preferred to carry on dribbling. Garrincha passed three players and then beat the goalkeeper. Instead of scoring, he waited for a defender to run back. Garrincha swerved and the defender had to grasp the post so as not to fall over. He then walked into the goal with the ball. He flicked it up, put it under his arm and sauntered back to the centre spot. The match was a friendly between Brazil and Fiorentina of Italy, Brazil's last fixture before the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden. When Garrincha scored, the stadium was silent apart from the shouts of his team-mates. In anger. They were terrified that such irresponsibility in a competitive game would cost them dear.

By 1958, Brazil were feeling the pressure of their unfulfilled potential. The country had still not won a World Cup. Both 1950 and 1954 had been lost by emotional frailty at the crucial moment - first against courageous Uruguayans and then against violent Hungarians. In 1958, the coaching staff introduced a psychologist to make sure the team was mentally prepared. Tests gave pseudo-scientific backing to Garrincha's playfulness. His aggression level was zero and he had below-average intelligence (he was judged to be "obviously infantile", lacking the sense of responsibility needed for team spirit. But he had an excuse. He was only 17.)
Garrincha was talented but irresponsible to the team but what of Didi? He's one of the greatest players of all time and was perhaps the best midfielder/playmaker of that era. He was the player of the tournament in the '58 world cup.
There was also Vava who was a renowned goal-machine and Djalma Santos was one of the stand out players in the '54 world cup

This Xesc matter don tire me o. This hardball we're playing won't get us anywhere. Arsenal are demanding 40m. In today's transfer market, that's a bargain price if you put Cesc's quality into perspective. The same Arsenal have placed 25m on a Nasri who has just one year on his contract and will be free to sign for a new club in just 6 months and move on a free next summer.
An unproven Sanchez has a 40m pricetag. . . 40m for Cesc is fair IMO, he can't be valued any lesser.
I heard we're set to throw in Maxwell or Abidal or both as part of the deal.

except that they weren't. . . . .a team no one gave hope and needed the help of pele in the knock-out stages to win the trophy.
in that same season, pele scored 66 goals in 46 apps in the domestic league. there was a reason brazil took him to the world cup even with his inexperience.
You mean the Brazil team that had Garrincha, Vava, Gilmar, the Santos'-Djalmar and Nilton; the influential captain, Zito and of course Didi - who according to legend invented the bicycle kick - wasn't star studded?
Brazil were one of the favourites for the 1958 WC.
It was the bulk of this same team that won the 1962 WC in which Pele was injured for major parts of.

@medjai,
the wisest man in nigeria is the most foolish man in benin republic or niger. the highest football governing body in europe is uefa and here u are a novice and possibly a cleaner in a hotel or computer attendant in a local cyber cafe putting uefa to shame.
You simply are a casualty of abnormal normality. . .I have no problem knocking some sense back into you because it seems like that's exactly what you need.

how do u differentiate individual teams/clubs from the general league? barca and madrid are classy no doubt but year in year out, only these two teams go beyond the group stages compared to the four english teams that will always represent. have you not noticed that of late english clubs go home with the help of their fellow english clubs? what is there to argue? why are the other teams not coming to the knock out stages?
You obviously know nothing about football. Valencia played in back to back finals. Deportivo and Villareal have played in the CL s/final and the likes of Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo have all played in the knockout stages of the CL. . . I talked about this in one of my earlier posts.
In contrast, how many EPL teams outside the big four have played in the knockout stages of the CL? How many EPL teams outside big four have played in the CL?

i have shown you uefa ranking and i have shown u eurotopfoot ranking, who are u showing me to back your arguement? knowing too well that you are not an authority in football. it is a shame nigerians claim to know everything but at the end, we know nothing.
arguments are won on points and not on any other thing.
la liga is about madrid and barca and that is why every year, every other team that struggles to be third and not first or second.
there are 3 cups in england and i can announce to you that 3 different teams are holding them unlike in la liga where barca and madrid are sure winners.
In EPL, Man Utd and Chelsea sweep everything that's on ground.

La Liga 2011-2012 fixtures have been released.
We kick off with a trip to big spending Malaga and face Villareal only a week later at home.
We'll also play Valencia and Atletico all in the first 6 weeks.
We have to hit the ground running.

Pharoh:
Official Announcement:  Real Madrid C. F. and SL Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Portuguese player Fabio Coentrao to the Spanish club for the next six seasons.
I wonder what the rationale behind this particular signing is. 5 signings already. . . I hope Mou still knows that you can only field 11 players at a time and can only register a maximum of 25 first team players?

How is things falling apart or you did not see the reasons that mourinho is putting forward because of the change. There is no present crisis in the madrid team to warrant the change but the need to have a captain that would stand for the team and not be restricted in the goal post. Spanish referees like talking to the captains only and how would casilas always run from his goal post to settle every dispute?.

Casilas will still be the team leader, in and off the pitch with even more greater role to play like negotiating bonuses. No one is downplaying the possibility of a crisis out of it but everything is moving in the right order. Mou will discuss with casilas, the team as a whole and the club management before any changes will be made.

The fans already selected alonso as the captain with about 75 percent vote, so the change is welcomed and i don't think casilas will mind that much. He can always take the arm band whenever real wins a trophy and he still has the Spanish national team to captain which is not a bad deal.
There's no point in what Mou is doing. What's the use of having a ceremonial and an administrative captain? A captain should be someone with excellent leadership abilities and someone everyone respects and looks up to regardless of what position he plays in. What Mou is doing will only lead to a divided dressing room.
Spain won the world cup with Casillas as captain.
Valencia won the league and UEFA cup in 2004 with Canizares as captain and I think Oliver Kahn also captained Bayern Munich to win trophies.
It doesn't matter if your captain is a goalkeeper on an outfield player.

Germany kept up their fine form at these FIFA U-17 finals with a 3-2 win to send England crashing out in Morelia. Impressive striker Samed Yesil scored a pair of goals on the day as the junior nationalmannschaft now move on to play either Mexico or France in the semi-finals.

This is definitely a good option for him at the moment because the first team is too crowded and there is no way he could have made it right now.
Same ol route for Castilla grads. He will end up in Valencia a season or two from now a la Soldado and more recently, Parejo.

Just saw Neymar and Ganso in Brazil's 0-0 draw against Venezuela at the on going Copa America. . . bloody overrated.

Eq. Guinea have done quite well in their debut WWC and were very impressive despite going down 3-2 to Australia.
