THE Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Monday, queried what it called ‘bogus budget’ for the second tenure inauguration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s administration in office. Governor Aregbesola is billed to be inaugurated for another term in office on Thursday, November 27, but the opposition party in a statement issued on Monday, in Osogbo, alleged that the plan by the state government to expend N700 million on the ceremony amounted to sheer wickedness and wastage. In a statement endorsed by the state PDP’s director of media and strategy, Mr Diran Odeyemi, the party contended that “the budget of N700 million for the swear-in ceremony amidst hunger by workers, who have not been paid salary in the last three months tell much about the kind of leaders holding the reigns in Osun at the moment.” The party recalled what the governor said in November 2012, while addressing some bankers that “I can pay workers salary every 25th day of the month without monthly allocation from the federation account and I will not owe them a penny,” but regretted that just two years after, the governor had found it hard paying workers, even when statutory allocations due to the state are still being given to it.” But, the APC director of publicity, research and strategy, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, described the PDP’s allegation as a ruse, stressing that the public should discountenance their position as mere ranting of a clueless people. According to him, “why are these people chasing shadow? When people have gone berserk, they need help. Those in the leadership of the PDP in Osun need help. The APC in Osun would enjoin them to look beyond their pedestrian argument and see reason.” “They are enemies of workers. In the history of this state, Aregbesola remains the only governor who has done so much for workers. The workers themselves know and appreciate his gestures. Right now, Aregbesola is empowering the people with N2billion with the assistance of CBN. The PDP was in power for seven years, what did they do with the power,” Oyatomi asserted. http://tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/22460-pdp-apc-trade-words-over-aregbesola-s-n700m-second-term-inauguration-budget |

President Goodluck Jonathan has described himself as the best leader to be produced by Nigeria. The President said no leader since the country gained independence in 1960 had done better than himself for the country. He, therefore, said the comment made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in which the ex-President described Jonathan’s performance as below average, was untrue. Jonathan said this in a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in Abuja on Sunday. Okupe’s statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to comments made by a former President of this country, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, regarding the performance of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. “Obasanjo had at an event over the weekend declared that he rated the President Goodluck Jonathan administration ‘below average’. “We aver that Obasanjo’s comments are untrue, misleading and clearly do not tally with the facts on the ground. “We therefore wish to assert without equivocation that in terms of performance and achievements, no administration since 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain, has done as much as that of President Jonathan.” He said that every discerning and unbiased Nigerian would definitely attest to this “as the evidence stare all of us in the face.” Okupe, who had also worked with the former President while in office, added that contrary to Obasanjo’s position, the Federal Government under Jonathan had performed excellently given the prevailing circumstances and resources available to it. He said while it was true that Nigeria had been faced with incidents of insurgency and terrorism, especially in the last few years, the Jonathan administration had successfully contained the initial widespread activities of the insurgents, which he said were prevalent in 12 states of the North, including the Federal Capital Territory. He added, “While it is true that the present activities of the terrorists in the three north-eastern states have become more deadly in mindless killings, kidnappings and supposed territorial seizures, government has made giant diplomatic strides with our neighbouring countries in order to checkmate the crisscrossing of the insurgents. “The military and other security agents, which have engaged the insurgents since inception, have done a great job in spite of recent challenges. “The truth of the matter which we must know and accept is that we have an internal enemy supported by internal and external resources waging a major warfare against our nation.” http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-to-obasanjo-im-nigerias-best-leader/ |

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, has lambasted political leaders in the country for the loss of thousands of lives to Boko Haram sect. Falana said the leaders promoted religion to the detriment of the unity of the people. Falana spoke on Wednesday at the 7th edition of Emeritus Prof. David Ijalaiye (SAN) and celebration of his 50th year anniversary at bar and academics. The programme was organised by Equity Chambers of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile –Ife, with Justice Amina Augie chairing the occasion. Falana cited the building of mosque and church at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and sponsorship of pilgrims to holy lands by governments at all levels as the root of religious division in the country. He said, “Boko Haram is fighting and Nigeria is not responding. If we were still under military rule, I would have suspected a sabotage. The problem of Boko Haram is the cause of both Muslims and Christians. We have allowed religion to outshine our reasoning and we now base our fairness on religious ground. There is no law that states that government shall sponsor anybody for religious purposes. “Nigeria is a secular state, which allows the right to religion. You are allowed to worship the way you like and go to heaven the way you want without force. But in our case, while (ex-dictator, Gen. Ibrahim) Babangida built a mosque, (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo built a church in the Aso Rock Villa and they are sponsoring them with government fund, they appointed Imams and chaplains respectively. “Every region in Nigeria is currently faced with its own insurgent groups, most of which are allegedly sponsored by government officials; and the challenge is usually that when you sponsor thugs, it will get to a stage when you lose control and that was what happened with the Boko Haram sect.” Falana said it was embarrassing that President Goodluck Jonathan has constantly been ill advised and unduly commended for his failure to tackle Boko Haramhttp://www.punchng.com/news/nigerian-leaders-responsible-for-b-haram-falana/ |

Road to 2015 won’t be smooth’ The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, who also spoke during the ceremony, said they were of the opinion that the PDP would win the presidential election and 30 out of the 36 governorship seats in the cbountry. He said, “ Mr. President, we know that the route to 2015 is not going to be very smooth but we are assuring you that at the end of the tunnel, victory will be yours and the PDP. “We were robbed of three states, but the entry of Ekiti and Ondo states have increased our number. We may end up with about 30 states.” Akpabio, who is also the Akwa Ibom State governor, also vowed that the PDP would not hand over the country to sponsors of terrorism. He said, “We will never be intimidated. You (Jonathan) are like David in the Bible. You are fighting all the wars today so that future Presidents in Nigeria will have peace. “We recognise that. You have taken the right step by building the Almajiri schools particularly in Northern Nigeria; you are building other schools in the South. “You have decided to take education as a major step to educate Nigerian children so that they will not be misled in the future again. “Never again will people mislead our children into terrorism; never again will our children succumb to insurgency. We are witnessing something that is totally un-Nigerian and we are saying do not be intimidated. We are behind you. “Those who are behind you are more than those that are against you. In 2015, all Nigerians are going to tell you that we are behind you. “The opposition is fighting a selfish war; they are coming to distablise Nigeria. We will not hand over this country to blackmailers; we will not hand over this country to sponsors of terrorism.” He said the APC had no plan for the country and described it as a blackmailer and agent of destabilisation. http://www.punchng.com/news/pdp-govs-to-jonathan-road-to-2015-ll-be-rough/ |
The Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, and the Inspector General of Police Mr. Suleiman Abba, have insisted that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, is no longer entitled to security details. They argued that Tambuwal had ceased to be a member of the House and its Speaker having defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, which in 2011 sponsored his election into the House of Representatives, to the All Progressives Congress. They maintained that Tambuwal had now become an ordinary citizen, who was no longer entitled to the privileges attached to the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. These are the contentions canvassed by both the Inspector-General of Police and Adoke in a joint counter-affidavit which they filed before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in response to the suit by Tambuwal and the APC. The IGP and the AGF are the 5th and 7th defendants in the suit respectively. The plaintiffs filed the suit to challenge the withdrawal of his security details, alleged threat by the PDP to declare his seat vacant and remove him as Speaker. The lawyer, who represented the IGP and the AGF, Ade Okeaya-Inneh (SAN), argued that the police authorities could not be accused of breaching the Constitution by withdrawing Tambuwal’s security details, since he (Tambuwal) had lost his seat as House member and Speaker. The counter affidavit which was deposed to on behalf of the AGF and IGP by one of their lawyers, Nnamdi Ekwem, read in part, “The 1st plaintiff (Tambuwal) vacated his seat in the House of Representatives as a member of that House, when he became a member of the 2nd plaintiff (All Progressives Congress) in October 2014, having been elected in 2011 on the platform of the 1st defendant (PDP). “The seat of the 1st plaintiff in the House of Representatives became automatically vacant by virtue of his defection to the 2nd plaintiff (APC) and consequently ceased to be the Speaker of the 3rd defendant (the House of Representatives). “The first plaintiff is not constitutionally entitled to security details and as such, the 5th defendant did not contravene any law by its withdrawal of the 1st plaintiff’s security details. The withdrawal of the security details of the 1st plaintiff was necessitated by the fact the he had vacated his office as a member of the House of Representatives and consequently ceased to be the Speaker of the 3rd defendant. “The 1st plaintiff is no longer a member of the House of Representatives and as such not entitled to any right or privilege attached to the office of the Speaker of the 3rd defendant. That, the 1st plaintiff, as an ordinary citizen of Nigeria, was not exposed to any danger of bodily harm because of the withdrawal of his security details. |

ABUJA—Those who use people living with disabilities to solicit money from the public will now be liable to a six-month imprisonment, among other punishments, even as a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities is to be established. The punishment was the decision of the Senate and the House of Representatives as contained in the harmonized bill passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly that would be sent to President Goodluck Jonathan for assent. The bill contains provisions that would ensure that the disabled are protected from discrimination and harmful treatment; have access to free education at all levels, basic health care, and employment, among others. The harmonized bill seeks to ensure that it is only persons living with disabilities that would benefit from government package and be fully integrated into the society while a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities established for them, and headed by a physically challenged person, as Chairman http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/nass-prescribes-jail-term-using-disabled-solicit-alms/#sthash.aB5XK7om.dpuf |

The Presidency has said there is no part of the world where the President resigns during an ongoing war. It therefore challenged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to tell Nigerians where such presidents had resigned during war time. The Presidency was reacting to the demand by the leadership of the APC, including its National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, that President Goodluck Jonathan should resign because of the ongoing war against the country by the members of the Boko Haram sect. Reacting on behalf of the President, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, asked Nigerians to ignore such calls. He said, “The suggestion by one of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Bola Tinubu, that President Goodluck Jonathan resign from office as a result of the activities of insurgents in the north eastern part of the country has once again shown beyond doubt that the former Lagos State Governor and his colleagues in the opposition are a bunch of political anarchists and charlatans blinded by an unbridled appetite for power. “The assertion by Tinubu at a political rally in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday that in ‘civilised’ societies, the President should have resigned is unfounded and lacking in historical precedence. “We challenge him to tell Nigerians which part of his ‘civilized’ world has there been a call on a President to resign during an on-going war. “When terrorists attacked the United States of America in September, 2001, leaders of the Democratic Party did not demand a resignation of President George Bush but rather they rose in defence of the American Nation to support the various measures taken by the President to defeat the Al Qaeda terrorists.” |
