Top Hunter in Adamawa(young Morris) Killed by ‘Bandits’

The head of operations of the Adamawa State Hunters Association, Young Moris, has been killed in a gun battle with bandits in Kaduna State, family and sources have said.

Mr Moris was among the hunters who assisted security operatives to tackle banditry and kidnapping in some parts of northern states.

Salihu Wobkenso, head of administration of the group, confirmed the development.

He said Mr Mori was killed in Kaduna.

”This is sad news to hunters. Young Mori, one of our hunters in Adamawa State from Guyuk LGA has been overpowered by cattle rustlers in Kaduna State in the early hours of today,” he said.

Mr Wobkenso did not give more details but said all hunters in the state were mourning the death.

Tributes pour in

Young Mori was a hero among the Lunguda speaking community of Adamawa State.

Residents mourned his death on Tuesday.

‘’The gallant General Young Mori has answered the home call, though you have gone by the will of God but your spirit is still with us. Rest well, Zwalka Nungurau,’’ said Johnson Gwadamdi.
‘’Yes we are grief (grieving) with the sad news and we can only pray for him to rest well. May God comfort the entire Lunguda land and people.

‘’You have said it yourself that there are young Lunguda youths that are better than you even when you are gone and most of all, God is the protector and refuge of Lunguda land and people. The world is a stage, you have played your part and left the stage,’’ Stephen Gyand said.

The north has been plagued by insecurity in recent months with killings, banditry and abductions for ransom, major concerns for residents.

Fed Govt Borrows Over N2trn From Bond Investors In 2020

Leveraging on excess liquidity that persisted in the banking system and the near zero yields on treasury bills (TBs), the Federal Government, through the Debt Management Office (DMO), raised N2.1 trillion from investors in its monthly bond issuance programme in 2020.

This represents 33 percent, year-on-year, (y/y) increase when compared with the N1.58 trillion raised by the DMO in 2019.

The N2.1 trillion raised in 2020 also represents 31 percent more than the N1.6 trillion funding target for the DMO under the Revised 2020 Budget.

Meanwhile, the monthly bond auctions conducted by the DMO in 2020 recorded 275 percent oversubscription, reflecting scramble for the high yielding FGN bonds by investors.

Economic Confidential Public Finance reports on monthly bond auction results show that the DMO offered N1.825 trillion worth of bonds during the year, representing 18 percent, y/y, increase when compared with N1.55 trillion offered in 2019.

But total public subscription (investors demand) stood at N6.58 trillion, translating to oversubscription of 257 percent.

The total public subscription represents 160 percent when compared with the N1.37 trillion subscription recorded in 2019.

Furthermore, the 257 percent oversubscription recorded in 2020 represents 315 percent increase when compared with the 62 percent oversubscription recorded in 2019.

The sharp increase in oversubscription was driven by massive excess liquidity in the banking system which persisted throughout the year due to steady decline in yields on TBs.

Analysis showed that the average interest rate on freshly issued TBs also known as Primary Market bills, fell to 0.09 percent in November 2020 from 4.8 percent in December last year. This represents 4,746 basis points (bpts) decline.

This was compounded by the exclusion of local investors from the TB’s secondary market (Open Market Operations).

Confirming the excess liquidity resulting from this trend, the CBN in its third quarter 2020, Q3’20, report stated: “Broad money supply (M3) on quarter-on-quarter basis, grew by 4.0 per cent at end-September 2020, in contrast to the 0.02 per cent decline at the end of the preceding quarter.

“Currency outside depository corporations, transferable deposits, and ‘other deposits’ largely propelled growth in monetary liabilities at the end of the review period, as securities other than shares plummeted by 28.9 per cent, attributable to the low demand for CBN bills due to relatively low yields.”

The apex bank’s report also shows a year-to-date growth of 6.69 percent, 33.5 percent and 17.34 percent respectively in Broad Money Supply (M3), transferable deposits, and ‘other deposits’ as at the end of Q3’2020.

As a result of this situation, compounded by the dearth of alternative instruments, the FGN bonds which has a record yields ranging 9.8 percent to 12.5 percent, became the most attractive and readily available investment instrument for investors in the fixed income market.

The huge demand triggered by this development is reflected in the upward trend in oversubscription for FGN bonds throughout the year.

In the first quarter, Q1’20, the bond auction recorded 249 percent oversubscription, as the DMO offered N345 billion worth of bonds, while public subscription stood at N1.2 billion. Consequently the DMO sold N706.8 billion.

The level of oversubscription rose to 361 percent in Q2’2020 as the public subscription to the N270 billion worth of bonds offered by the DMO stood at N1.25 trillion, with total bond sale at N666.8 billion.

Oversubscription scaled down to 152 percent in the third quarter, as the DMO offered N425 billion and sold N410.9 billion worth of bonds while public subscription stood at N1.07 trillion.

But oversubscription escalated again to 226 percent in the fourth quarter as the public subscription stood at N554.67 while the DMO offered and sold N170 billion and N320 billion worth of bonds respectively.

Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum on Monday visited Jakana, one of the major towns along Maiduguri-Damaturu highway, during which he expressed serious anger what has become routine attacks on travelers and villagers by Boko Haram, part of which was Friday’s abduction of over 30 travelers.

Zulum said it was disappointing that majority of the attacks within the last two years, took place between Auno and Jakana, a distance of about 20 kilometers.

“I have had occasions to defend the Nigerian military in order to boost the morale of commanders and their troops at the front lines because I know the true picture of things, however, I am really disappointed that despite all support from both the federal government and from us in Borno state, our military is failing to secure an area of 20 kilometers, which is the distance between Auno and Jakana. And incidentally, majority of Boko Haram’s attacks along this Maiduguri-Damaturu-Kano road, keeps happening between Auno and Jakana. So, if the military cannot secure 20 kilometers, how can they keep us with the hope they will defeat the Boko Haram?” Zulum said.

The governor also berated the army and his own state government established rapid response squad which combines well equipped policemen, vigilantes and local hunters, for lack of visibility along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road, which he thought, makes it feasible for Boko Haram to keep running their show in the same axis and on multiple occasions.

“With all you (journalists) we drove from Maiduguri to here, Jakana. We did not see soldiers on the road, we did not see even our own rapid response squad on this road and they were trained, employed, kitted and paid to protect all Nigerians within their areas of operation and these Nigerians include travelers plying this busy and important road” the governor noted.

He recalled that this year alone, the insurgents carried out many attacks along Maiduguri-Damaturu-Kano road, including the one in February, in which over 30 persons including nursing mother and an infant were burnt to death as travelers.

Zulum however assured residents along the road that he was going to immediately hold a security meeting and hopefully come up with more measures to secure the highway. The governor urged citizens to continually support the military by sharing information that would generate credible intelligence on the activities of insurgents.

The new policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directing all exporters to present the Nigeria Export Proceed (NXP) number before exporting any good outside the country is currently causing a setback for international trade.

Already, the exporters of perishable items groan under the cumbersome process of acquiring the NXP number while their goods lie fallow at the ports. Those affected are afraid the goods could lose quality.

An importer and Secretary-General, National Cashew Association of Nigeria, Sotonye Anga, told our correspondent that the agricultural goods were about to perish at the terminal while they had waited endlessly for NXP number.

He appealed to the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to suspend the directive, which he described as a major setback to non-oil exports.

The documentation process involves NXP numbers, Form NXP, which is a mandatory document to be completed by all exporters through authorised dealer bank for shipment of goods outside the country.

Anga said: “We have been having issues with the NXP validation, which is a new procedure that CBN introduced. It came in so suddenly, introducing several agencies to validate the export process. First, you have the authorized dealer bank; the pre-inspection agency; the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Central Bank. All these have made the process very cumbersome.

“It is creating queues. Several containers are stranded now in the port terminals. The worst-case applies to perishable commodities. When you subject them to this kind of procedure, you will have some problems with their integrity. If cargoes remain in the containers, their quality deteriorates.”

He urged the CBN to suspend the programme.

“I understand that the governor means well for the economy. But there is no appropriate infrastructure to handle the procedure. All these would bring confusion, corruption, frustration and a whole lot of issues,” he said.

Anga said the government should have carried the stakeholders along, sensitised the exporters and created the right infrastructure.

“You don’t take people by surprise. If you ask me, I will tell you this is not working. Right now, the frustration the policy is bringing to agriculture commodity export is too much,” he lamented.

“They should introduce a good idea that will not kill exports, this system is beginning to shrink exports already. It is ill-timed. Not now that the economy is so battered, we are looking to increase non-oil revenue and diversification of the economy. You are not encouraging exports. We are calling on the CBN governor to suspend the programme. It is not helping non-oil export,” he stated.

President of Cocoa Exporters Association of Nigeria, Pius Ayodele, had earlier said that about 100,000 tons of cocoa beans are trapped at the ports and another 100,000 tonnes of a variety of agricultural commodities are in warehouses around the country.

He said it now takes an average of 40 days, instead of seven days, to get approvals to clear a container for shipping.

The CBN had earlier in October threatened to sanction exporters who ship out goods without NXP numbers.

Emefiele noted that it has been discovered that many shipping companies do not comply with the Federal Government’s directives that such shipments carry NXP number.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday in Abuja revealed the problem he had been suffering since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed power in 2015.

Jonathan spoke at the presentation of a book entitled “Dear President Goodluck Jonathan”, written in his honour by Bonaventure Melah, a journalist.

He revealed in his remarks at the event that the problem he and some of his cabinet members had continued to suffer under the current government was being tagged corrupt.

He added that but for God who had been on his side, he would have been killed politically by the allegations.

Jonathan was defeated as incumbent president in 2015 by President Buhari.

His wife Patience Jonathan and some of his relatives as well as many of his cabinet members were accused of one form of corruption or the other by the current administration.

Some of them had been sent to prison, some acquitted and many of them still undergoing trial.

In his remarks, Jonathan said, “That is the problem myself and some members of my cabinet are still suffering since the beginning of this administration when we were all tagged corrupt people.

“But I thank God that people can come together to celebrate me today. It is God. Otherwise, I would have been completely buried (politically).”

The former president said he disregarded advice from his close political allies to sack Aruma Oteh as then Director-General of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2012.

“When my close political allies advised me to sacrifice Arunma Oteh so that I don’t have problems with the house of representatives I said I won’t sacrifice any Nigerian just for me to be in the good books of the lawmakers. Rather, I would sacrifice myself. I took that decision because I was convinced she was not corrupt.

“If I had sacked her undeservedly that may have been the end of her career with the World Bank.”

Jonathan also denied the claim that pressure from northerners made him sack Azubuike Ihejirika as the chief of army staff.

“If somebody is doing the right thing, even if you want to split my head, I would not sack the person,” he said.

On how he had planned to change Nigeria, he said, “My interest was to change the society through education. No matter what we do to elevate Nigeria, without education, society would find it difficult to change. That was my personal view,” he said.

“That was also why I intervened in the almajirai case. We needed to elevate them above that level, because of the many social problems they were causing.

“I strongly believe that if there must be a change in Nigeria, we must be competent scientifically and technologically, because technology rules the world today.”

BREAKING: In audio message, Boko Haram claims responsibility for abduction of Kankara schoolboys.
The Boko Haram terrorists have claimed responsibility for the abduction of hundreds of schoolboys of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State on Friday night.

In the wake of the attack, at least 600 out of over 800 schoolboys were declared missing. Although the state governor, Aminu Masari, claimed only 333 are missing, a school register register seen by Daily Trust reporter showed 668 students missing.
In a 4:30 audio message sent to DAILY NIGERIAN on Tuesday morning, the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, said his group abducted the schoolboys because Western education is against the tenets of Islam.

“What happened in Katsina was done to promote Islam and discourage un-Islamic practices as Western education is not the type of education permitted by Allah and his Holy Prophet.

“They are also not teaching what Allah and his Holy Prophet commanded. They are rather destructing the Islam. It may be subtly, but Allah the Lord of the Skies and Earths knows whatever is hidden. May Allah promote Islam, may we die as Muslims.”

“In a nutshell, we are behind what happened in Katsina,” he said.

The terrorists’ leader ended the message by saying: “The speaker is Abubakar Shekau, leader of Jama’atu Ahlussunna Lid-Da’awati wal Jihad.”
Mr Shekau neither gave detail of the attack nor number of the abducted schoolboys nor mentioned issue of negotiation with government.

Even before Mr Shekau released the audio, Bulama Bukarti, an analyst at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change told London Telegraph that there were Boko Haram footprints in the abduction.

According to Mr Bulama, the Boko Haram leader has been trying to establish operations in the region west of Katsina State.

He said several hundred fighters in Zamfara State recently claimed to be operating a Boko Haram cell that is loyal to Mr Shekau.

He added that a similar number of fighters were also recorded claiming allegiance to Mr Shekau in Niger State.

“It is also possible the fighters moved through the large forest from a neighbouring state to stage the attack. Men can be heard shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ in the background during one eyewitness video of the raid,” Mr Bulama said.

The Lagos State Government has announced that barring any exigency, the long-awaited Agege Pen-Cinema Bridge will fully open to vehicular movement in about 8 weeks.

The project is said to be at 90% completion level and also has all civil works already completed on the bridge.

This disclosure was made by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during an unplanned inspection of the project site in the company of his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, and other cabinet members on Wednesday, to assess the level of work done so far.

The Governor was also joined in a walk-through on the 1.7-kilometre-long bridge by a multitude of ecstatic residents, who expressed their appreciation for the pace of work on the bridge.

Sanwo-Olu, while addressing pressmen during the tour of the project site, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done, disclosing that the bridge would be fully opened for public use next February.

What Sanwo-Olu said
He said :

only work left on the bridge was turning intersection improvements at the descending part of the bridge and signalization for ease of traffic movement.

“We have just finished an inspection and a walk through of the Agege Pen-Cinema Bridge. The level of completion of the project is around 90 per cent. All the major brick work has been done and we are left with two major deliverables, which include cleaning up the intersection and signalization.

There are four synchronized signalization we are expecting to have and each must work together with the other. We are expecting that all these will be done early next year. This is in fulfilment of the promise we made that we will complete all projects abandoned. We are giving the contractor handling this project a maximum of eight weeks to attend to little snags in the project.

“By second week in January, vehicles can move on the bridge but we may need additional four weeks to complete the signalization, road painting and demarcation. We are looking forward to fully hand over this project sometimes in February next year,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said the State Government had started to consider other complementary road construction to be done on the axis to further improve traffic for commuters in the area.

The Governor disclosed that Lagos State was in talks with the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to take on adjoining arterial roads, with the objective to ease the flow of traffic from the bridge down to other areas.
